New England Patriots are considering a RB move

New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson dealt with a horrific fumble issue early in the 2024 NFL season that could lead head coach Jerod Mayo to turn to Antonio Gibson.

Mayo said via ESPN’s Mike Reiss that Gibson, who will face Stevenson in Week 5, is “definitely under consideration” as the Patriots prepare to face the Miami Dolphins.

Stevenson fumbled in each of his first four games and wasn’t particularly productive. He rushed for 267 yards and a pair of touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry.

Stevenson takes it a step further and has averaged less than four yards per attempt in each of his last three games. In New England’s Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, he carried the ball 13 times for 43 yards.

But would trading Gibson give the Pats a better opportunity?

Gibson totaled 155 rushing yards and 5.3 yards per attempt in 2024. He also caught seven passes for 82 yards.

The Patriots have signed the 26-year-old on a free transfer. He spent the first four years of his career with the Washington Commanders. His best season came in 2021 when he rushed for 1,037 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

However, Gibson posted a meager 265 yards and a score as a rusher last season. He showed impressive pass-catching skills, hauling in 48 receptions for 389 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but he fell off the radar in the running game.

But it looks like Gibson could get another chance in Foxborough.

The former third-round pick carried the ball six times against the 49ers for just 12 yards. His best performance so far this year came in Week 2 of the Patriots’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks, when he rushed for 96 yards on 11 rushing attempts.
