A 13-year-old girl in the US has been charged with murdering her seven-year-old sister while she was babysitting her.

The siblings allegedly got into an argument after they were left by their parents at their home in Taylor. Michiganon Saturday.

After the argument, the seven-year-old went into the bathroom and was stabbed multiple times with a knife, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The teen, whose name was not released, called 911 and her sister later died at the hospital.

The older girl was charged as a juvenile with first-degree murder, aggravated murder and child abuse.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy said consideration had been given to labeling the teenager as an adult, but that was not the same as trying the girl as an adult.

The designation “gives the judge the option to sentence the defendant as a minor, as an adult, or to impose a mixed juvenile sentence with the possibility of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated,” the prosecutor said.

“Our other option was to keep her in the juvenile justice system. That’s exactly what we decided to do.”

Ms Worthy added: “Given her young age, the state would have seven years to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate her before she is compulsorily discharged at the age of 21.”

“Hopefully then she wouldn’t be a danger to others.”

The teen was remanded in custody following a preliminary hearing Tuesday in juvenile court.
