Springfield Public Schools officials say Prop ‘S’ projects are on schedule and on budget

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Last year, Springfield voters approved a $220 million bond issue to repair and modernize schools across the district.

Numerous improvements have been made so far.

“They raved about it. They’ve been counting down the days since day one,” Alicia Bliss said.

She has three children who attend Pittman Elementary School in Springfield. She says her children enjoy having a storm shelter that doubles as a learning space.

“They love the idea of having a space where there is no crowd and no lunch break. They have a new music room. They love the idea of using it as a storm shelter too. They say we can be safe, mom,” Bliss said.

“It’s just an abundance of opportunity for Pittman,” said Principal Melissa Agnew.

Agnew and her students cut the ribbon to officially open the new shelter on Tuesday.

“All the dodgeballs got stuck under the tables, on the tables. Now they have so much space to play all the games in their curriculum,” Agnew said.

“It is incredible how quickly we are moving these projects forward,” said Shawn Dilday, executive director of operations for Springfield Public Schools. “Our reed project is scheduled to open in 2026. Pershing, we are in the early stages of the design phase for this building. Pipkin is undergoing due diligence. We will continue with this at the beginning of the year.”

He says safety remains the district’s top priority.

“All lower levels have security films. In addition to the security film, we install access controls on the doors. We install roof sensors to ensure the safety of the area. We are adding additional cameras throughout the district,” Dilday said.

He says the administration is already looking ahead.

“We have already assessed the buildings that need improvement. What buildings will be out there in Phase 3? We will seek support from the board and community to move forward with the next buildings,” he said.

Bliss says the improvements add value to her children’s education.

“They just feel comfortable at school. When you feel comfortable in school, you can open up and learn everything you can,” she said.

Projects under Prop S are expected to be completed by 2028.
