The shocking verdict of the first flash polls on the Vance-Walz dispute has been announced

Republican would-be vice president and Ohio Senator JD Vance edged his Democratic opponent Tim Walz by just 1 percent in the vice presidential debate, widely viewed as a tie between the two.

The first flash poll, conducted by CBS News and YouGov, was released shortly after the debate aired Tuesday night. Voters voted 42 percent for Vance, 41 percent for Walz and another 17 percent for a tie.

The results are in stark contrast to the two presidential debates this year, when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump knocked Biden out of the race in June and then had a strong performance from Kamala Harris – even as Trump continued to claim he had won. According to CBS, 88 percent of voters believed the debate itself was “generally positive.”

Walz received a higher rating for sounding “sensible” during the debate compared to Vance’s 65 percent, although Vance left the debate with a more positive opinion than the one people had of him before his appearance; Vance’s positive rating improved from 40 percent to 49 percent, while Walz’s positive rating increased from 52 percent to 60 percent.

Walz did better than Vance on the issues of abortion (62 percent to 38 percent) and health care (59 percent to 41 percent), while Vance gained approval on the issues of the economy and immigration.

According to CBS, the poll is based on 1,630 voters who watched the debate and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. Only those who followed the debate were included in the analysis, YouGov said.

“Neither has yet convinced the majority of voters of an essential part of the office: that they would be qualified to be president if necessary,” CBS wrote.
