JD Vance did a good job in the first 94 minutes of Tuesday night’s debate.

“Vance’s dominant debate performance shows why he is Trump’s vice presidential nominee,” a post by Vance New York Times declared opinion columnist Ross Douthat barely halfway through the CBS-hosted event.

Tim Walz then asked the Ohio senator whether Trump lost the 2020 election.

“Tim, I’m focused on the future,” Vance said in a response in which he did not acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory. “Of course Donald Trump and I think there were problems in 2020.”

The Minnesota governor, whose brief and sometimes rambling answers led to a disappointing performance for much of the evening, didn’t miss out this time.

“That’s a damn non-answer,” Walz said.

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s decision to fulfill his ceremonial duty and certify Biden’s election victory is “the reason Mike Pence is not on this stage,” Walz continued. “What worries me is: Where is the firewall with Donald Trump?” Where is the firewall when he knows he can do anything, including running an election, and his vice president is not going to oppose it? That’s what we’re asking you, America.”

Vance, a guy with historically low likeability ratings, worked hard Tuesday to present himself as a more likable guy than the guy who mocks childless cat ladies and spreads racist rumors about legal immigrants in his own state.

But Vance’s evasion on Jan. 6 undid much of that work — and revealed much about the Republican vice presidential nominee. Vance also called it “truly rewarding that Democratic leaders are saying that Donald Trump posed a unique threat to democracy when he peacefully relinquished power on January 20.” This statement suggests that it is inappropriate to dwell on the The threat that Trump poses to democracy is of concern because his attempted coup has failed.

Vance is not Trump’s vice president because he is a best-selling author, because he is smart, or because he can provide answers that excite Ross Douthat. He’s there because he won’t say that Trump lied and continues to lie about the 2020 election.

And if it turns out it wasn’t Trump fully joked when he called If he has “denounced” the Constitution and vowed to be a dictator for a day, JD Vance will not do so if he pursues his stated plans to ignore the Constitution and the rule of law, deport millions of immigrants, and use the Justice Department to prosecute political enemies. Be the one to stop him. That is the most important takeaway from Tuesday’s debate.
