Daniel Day-Lewis is returning as an actor in a film directed by his son, after previously announcing his retirement

The Oscar winner had already indicated in 2017 that he would retire from his acting career

Daniel Day-Lewis is back in action.

The three-time Oscar winner, 67, who announced his retirement from acting in 2017, will star in a new film directed by his artist son Ronan, 26, Focus Features confirmed to PEOPLE.

Ronan’s directorial debut is titled anemone Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green also star.

Day-Lewis and his son also co-wrote the film, which “explores the complicated relationships between fathers, sons and brothers and the dynamics of family bonds,” according to a press release.

In a statement, Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film with a brilliant visual artist, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator. They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the Plan B team.”

A representative for Day-Lewis shared the news of his retirement back in June 2017, months before his final film. Phantom threadis coming to cinemas. He also received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for this film.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor. “He is extremely grateful to all his collaborators and listeners over the many years,” his spokesman said at the time. “This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will be making any further comment on this matter.”
