Berkeley County is applying for grants to revitalize the old high school

ST. STEPHEN, S.C. (WCSC) – Berkeley County is moving forward with its plan to seek federal funding to renovate the old St. Stephen High School.

The county began this work to secure a brownfield grant in 2022 by accepting a $500,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant. Those in charge took that money and assessed the area with the help of environmental experts, who determined that pollutants from the construction materials had affected the land.

Next, the district will submit its application in the fall for funding to revitalize the school, which closed in 1996.

A community meeting about the grant with an opportunity for community feedback will be held at St. Stephen Elementary School on October 29 at 6 p.m.

District leaders are now asking people who know the area and live there to review and comment on their application. Public input was also crucial throughout the evaluation process.

Since 2022, people have been attending meetings and sharing ideas about which websites the money should improve. The old high school and the old lumber mill were the top picks.

From October 15th you can also comment on the funding application online using this link.

The overall goal of this work is to obtain federal funds to convert the polluted land into something that will provide more employment opportunities or quality of life resources to St. Stephen.
