Police say a man strangled a 1-year-old son and claimed the boy wasn’t listening

A Virginia man is in custody after authorities say he admitted last month to choking his 1-year-old son to death because he “didn’t listen,” according to a criminal complaint.

Inmate documents reviewed by PEOPLE show Nathaniel Lee Edmonds remains incarcerated at the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail and is being held without bail after being arrested on September 18 in connection with the death of his son that same night.

He is charged with second-degree murder. It’s not immediately clear whether he entered a plea or hired an attorney.

Last month, police were called to Edmonds’ home in Front Royal, Virginia, when the boy’s mother came home from work to find the boy unresponsive in his bed. That’s according to a criminal complaint filed in court this week and obtained by PEOPLE. Edmonds “was supposed to take care of his son,” the mother told police, but he was “nowhere to be found” when she returned and found the boy, the complaint says.

The Front Royal Police Department said in a statement last month that Edmonds’ son was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the complaint, police later spotted Edmonds walking down a road about seven miles from the family’s home. The complaint says Edmonds was taken into custody and confessed to “choking his 1-year-old by using both hands on him for several minutes because the child wouldn’t listen and he couldn’t take it anymore.”

The father allegedly told police he suffocated his son in his own bed, where the mother later discovered her son’s body, the complaint says.

PEOPLE reached out to the Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for comment but did not immediately receive a response Tuesday morning.
