Iran attacks Israel most recently: “Nearly 200 rockets” fired at Israel; Biden orders US military to shoot down Iranian missiles | World News

Analysis: It could be a ballistic missile war – and that’s exactly what the US wanted to avoid

Our Dominic Waghorn, International Affairs Editor has warned there could be a “ballistic missile war” in the Middle East after Iran fired hundreds of missiles.

He said: “It’s a very, very serious moment for the Middle East, but I think also for the world, and you have to wonder what happens next.”

“We can, of course, remember in April when Iran launched its first direct attack on Israel, and that was the first time Iran attacked Israel directly.”

“At the time it felt almost like a ritual, it was a response to an Israeli attack on the consulate building in Damascus, where Israel carried out several assassination attempts.”

“But at the time there was a feeling that the Iranians were telling Israel – but also Israel’s American patrons – that we have to do this.”

“So there was an understanding that Israel’s allies would repel this attack and see it coming.”

But this time, Waghorn says, the Israelis have made it clear that they “will respond with force, and they expect the Americans to help them.”

He adds: “We may be facing a ballistic missile war.”

“This is exactly what the Americans tried to avoid by sending huge amounts of troops to the region.

“They wanted to warn the Iranians to wait out this matter.”
