Timothée Chalamet’s latest film has transformed him into a mustachioed ’50s heartthrob

Timothée Chalamet tends to look straight into the future of fashion. There were all these princely sci-fi suits by Haider Ackermann on that dune Campaign path. Last week there were the big apocalyptic boots. But in his latest film, Chalamet throws time back to the ’50s – and unsurprisingly, the era’s style suits him as well as any neo-Parisian tailoring.

While filming Marty Supreme On location in New York City, Chalamet showed up in an outfit your grandpa probably would have proudly worn back in the day. Which makes sense considering the film is about a table tennis champion from the good old days. That means boxy fits, big collars, sweater vests, pleated pants, a neat side part (a far cry from the usual untamed curls that have become his calling card), and a cheeky little mustache.

And it’s both a new and old look for the Oscar nominee. While his roles between the wild (Bones and everything) and the fantastic (Wonka) and the imagination (dune), contemporary clothing from one of the most beautiful eras in men’s fashion is pretty much new territory for the actor. There’s a historical universality here, too: fashion constantly champions looks from higher up in the family, and Grandpacore’s rise is proving tougher than ever.

Consider the babushka headscarves of these lively TikTok boys. Or the deeply classic tailoring at Drake’s. Or the Fair Isle building in Howlin, whose walls largely come from the Scottish Highlands. All three can be tied directly into the actor’s latest film (and real life).

So maybe Timothée Chalamet isn’t as far in the future as we thought. Actually with Marty Supremehe could be on time.
