ATLANTA – It all came down to this.

The New York Mets’ quest to reach the Major League Baseball playoffs for the second time in three seasons hinged on whether they could pick up a win in Monday’s doubleheader against the Braves at Truist Park.

If the Mets split the doubleheader, they would snag the No. 6 seed in the National League and return to Milwaukee for a three-game Wild Card series with the Brewers. If the Mets won the doubleheader, they would finish as the No. 5 team and cross a three-game series with the San Diego Padres while eliminating the Braves from the postseason.

It was a wild back-and-forth affair in the eighth and ninth innings, and in the end the Mets prevailed with an 8-7 victory in the first game of the doubleheader that sent them to the playoffs. The Mets lost the second game 3-0 and slipped to the sixth seed in the National League.

The Mets now return to Milwaukee to take part in a best-of-three National League Wild Card Series on Tuesday at 5:32 p.m

The Mets scare the Braves but drop the second game

After securing their place in the playoffs in the first game, the second half of the doubleheader game on Monday was a battle for the Mets to stay in the league.

They called up Joey Lucchesi to start and gave Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos, JD Martinez and Starling Marte a chance to rest.

The Braves scored a run off Lucchesi on an RBI single in the second inning and that was all they needed to secure their own spot in a 3-0 victory over the Mets. Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run double against Huascar Brazoban.

The Braves grab the season tiebreaker with the Mets and will now face the fourth-seeded Padres in the NL Wild Card round.

Francisco Lindor HR puts the Mets back on top in the 9th inning

Francisco Lindor hit perhaps the biggest home run of his career, hitting a dramatic two-run blast to give the Mets the lead again, 8-7.

Edwin Diaz blew the lead in the 8th inning

The Mets asked closer Edwin Diaz to record the final five outs, giving him a 6-4 lead in the 8th inning. But Diaz couldn’t hold on to the lead. He failed to cover first base on the grounder on the line set up by Pete Alonso and then allowed a bases-loaded double to Ozzie Albies that gave the Braves a 7-6 lead.

Mets take a 6-3 lead after defeating Spencer Wechselbach

The Mets had almost no answers for Braves right-hander Spencer Schwanzenbach. They only scored four goals, but Tyrone Taylor’s final attack against him was the biggest of the game.

Taylor worked an 11-pitch hit and doubled into the left-center field gap to start the eighth inning. Schlafenbach had 83 pitches in the game, but Taylor’s long hit forced Brian Snitker to reach into his bullpen for the first time.

Then the Mets offense got rolling. Against Joe Jiminez and Raisel Iglesias, the Mets scored four straight hits to tie the game. Francisco Alvarez led off with an RBI double, Francisco Lindor hit an RBI single to center and Jose Iglesias tied the game with an RBI single to right field off Iglesias.

The Mets took a one-run lead on a sacrifice fly by Mark Vientos and then Brandon Nimmo ended Raisel Iglesias’ effort by hitting a two-run home run into the chop house in right field.

Ramon Laureano hits a solo home run to extend the Braves’ lead

Carlos Mendoza tried to get another error-free inning out of Tylor Megill, but the Mets right-hander couldn’t keep the Braves off the field.

With one out, Ramon Laureano hit a low cutter over the left-center field wall to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. It was the seventh hit Megill allowed of the game, but the first since the Braves’ two-run third inning. Laureano has three of them.

Mets fail at first big chance against Spencer Wechselbach

In four innings, the Mets had just one baserunner against Spencer Hülsenback.

Pete Alonso and JD Martinez had back-to-back singles to apply first-time pressure, but Tyrone Taylor struck out with a curveball and Francisco Alvarez and Harrison Bader both ground out.

Ozzie Albies gives Braves a 2-0 lead

Tylor Megill’s second stint at the top of the Braves lineup didn’t go as planned.

Michael Harris II singled up the middle and Ozzie Albies hit a two-run home run to left field on a hanging slider from Megill.

Matt Olson also hit a single, prompting a visit from Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. Megill was able to take out Travis d’Arnaud with a low sinker, putting both runners in scoring position.

Megill has 66 pitches after two innings.

Tyrone Taylor gets an obscure infield single, the Mets can’t capitalize

Tyrone Taylor made a heads-up play to score the first goal against Spencer Rumpfenbach.

In the opening pitch of the third inning, Taylor hit a slow roller that snaked its way back into foul territory from foul territory and beat an underhand throw from Wechselbach.

Taylor stole second base on the next at-bat and advanced to third base on a ground ball to Gio Urshela at third, but was unable to score as Harrison Bader and Francisco Lindor struck out in the bottom of the inning.

Tylor Megill overcomes the first major problems in the second

Tylor Megill opened the second inning with some bad luck.

With one out, Ramon Laureano hit a slow chopper to left to reach first base. Then Travis d’Arnaud hit a line drive to left that Mark Vientos dived into his glove, but the Mets third baseman couldn’t get the ball cleanly out of his glove.

But Megill managed to pull through, firing up Gio Urshela and Orlando Arcia on sliders in consecutive at-bats. He has four strikeouts in two innings.

Spencer Hügelbach made it through two innings

The Mets have not yet found a cure for the effectiveness of Braves right-hander Spencer Schwanzenbach.

The 24-year-old rookie threw two perfect innings to start the doubleheader. He struck out Jose Iglesias and Mark Vientos on sliders to end the first inning and tied Brandon Nimmo with a cutter to start the second.
