Creole culture exhibit opens at Lafayette City Hall

LAFAYETTE PARISH – The Creole Culture Exhibit opens to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Lafayette City Hall, showcasing Acadiana’s rich Creole heritage.

The exhibition, titled “Creole Tapestry and Luminous Voices: A Cultural Mosaic,” opened with an opening ceremony on Monday, September 30.

Curated by photographer and Louisiana Creole Culture co-founder Milton Arceneaux, the exhibition features black and white portraits of members of the Acadiana Creole community for their contributions to their communities.

“Creole culture to me represents family – it is a family. It’s a culture. I do my best to keep the Creole culture alive.” He added, “The way to honor the Creole culture is to spend time with the elders and learn their customs. “We try to live their history and learn their culture,” Arceneaux said.

Creole culture will be on full display in Grand Coteau on Saturday, October 5, for Creole Culture Day. Participants will be able to interact with elders and learn about Creole customs, Creole language and genealogy, further highlighting the importance of preserving this cultural heritage.

The Creole culture exhibition will remain open at City Hall until October 31st.
