Bill Maher shocked by MSNBC’s softball interview with Kamala Harris: I didn’t expect them to ‘rub her feet’

“Real Time” host Bill Maher appeared shocked by MSNBC’s softball interview with Vice President Kamala Harris and took a dig at his latest guest, Stephanie Ruhle.

“I’m working on strengthening myself [Harris’] She was under a lot of pressure because of her vulnerabilities. She doesn’t do interviews. She doesn’t answer [questions]- So she sat for an interview. She said, ‘Okay, I’ll answer your tough questions.’ So she went on MSNBC,” Maher joked during his opening monologue Friday night.

“There were questions that weren’t quite as hard-hitting, but I still didn’t expect them to rub her feet,” the liberal moderator added, drawing laughter from his audience.

Ruhle appeared on “Real Time” just days before she landed the interview with the vice president in which she defended Harris, who didn’t answer tough policy questions.

“Kamala Harris is not running for perfection. She’s running against Trump,” Ruhle told Maher. “We have two options. And so there are some things that you may not know the answer to. And in 2024, unlike 2016 for many Americans, we know exactly what Trump will do, who he is, and what kind of threat he is to democracy.”

The MSNBC host repeatedly fawned over Harris after her exclusive interview.

“What I didn’t hear from her was divisive language,” Ruhle told her MSNBC colleague Nicolle Wallace. “Imagine if I sat against it Donald Trumpplease imagine the language he would use! And just the fact that we talked about collaborative inclusivity – I don’t know. Vote for her or don’t vote for her, but isn’t it great to just have a positive conversation right now?”

Ruhle acknowledged that Harris didn’t answer the question of how she would get funding for her ambitious economic agenda without Congress, but quickly defended her by saying Trump would make the deficit “significantly larger than Vice President Harris.”

She went on to say that it was “fine” for Harris not to provide details about her policy proposals, shrugging off the non-responses as she was just a “politician.”

“It’s complicated, isn’t it?” Ruhle exclaimed. “We are a country of 330 million people, our economy is complicated. Likewise – is the economy good or bad? It really depends! So tariffs can work if they are used in the right places. And you could observe that.” and say, “Well, she didn’t give a clear, direct answer.” That’s fine, because we’re not talking about clear or direct issues.”
