Welcome to the latest chapter in the remake theater, where a studio pulls a recognizable title from its archives and plans to give it a new cinematic makeover with fresh talent.

In this case, the company is 20th Century Studios, and the film is the 1992 psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which gave Rebecca De Mornay a major career boost as she played the vengeful Peyton Flanders played who causes mischief on a family.

The 1992 original, directed by Curtis Hanson, starred Annabella Sciorra. Amanda Silver, better known these days for her work on the Planet of the Apes films (including this year’s Planet of the Apes film), wrote the screenplay.

It’s about Flanders (De Mornay), a twisted widow (whose dead husband was a sex offender) who, despondent over the loss of her own baby, infiltrates a family (of a woman who was one of her husband’s victims) and her nanny , with the ultimate goal of taking the children and husband for himself.

What new twists the new version holds have yet to be revealed, but we can’t imagine audiences would be impressed by a simple retelling.

In addition to Monroe, the creative team also includes screenwriter Micah Bloomberg, who previously worked on 2022’s “Sanctuary” and created the TV series “Homecoming.”

This time, Michelle Garza Cervera, who directed “Huesera: The Bone Woman,” is in the director’s chair.

She was also selected for the 2023 Sundance Momentum Fellowship and nominated for Breakthrough Director at the 2023 Gotham Independent Film Awards.

As mentioned, Monroe is the star of this year’s biggest indie hit, Longlegs, directed by Oz Perkins and starring Nicolas Cage.

She got her big break with David Robert Mitchell’s “It Follows” and was also seen in “Significant Other,” “Watcher,” “Villains” and “Honey Boy.”

When will the new “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” be in theaters?

20th Century Studios has not yet confirmed a release date for the new thriller.
