Deadpool and Wolverine got away with tons of NSFW content, but Ryan Reynolds confirms Kevin Feige asked him to remove a line

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to enjoy popularity, thanks to new releases both released in theaters and streamed with a Disney+ subscription. The latest film to hit theaters is Deadpool and Wolverine, which broke records upon its release. The threequel got away with a lot of NSFW content, but Ryan Reynolds confirms that Kevin Feige asked him to remove a line.

Fans who had watched the Marvel films for years were originally worried about how Deadpool would work in the shared universe, but luckily Shawn Levy’s blockbuster still had the same R-rated tone. But Levy and Reynolds have a canceled joke that will take them to their graves. Reynolds talks about the one joke that got cut at the Fast Company Innovation Festival (via Deadline). In his words:

There was only one line in the entire film that I was told to take out. No. No. No! And they were right!

Talk about perspective. While one might have assumed Reynolds wasn’t trying to joke Deadpool and WolverineHe seems to admit that Kevin Feige had the right idea. Unfortunately, it’s unclear if we’ll ever know what exactly that joke was.

Considering how much money Deadpool 3 made, especially after box office bombs like The miraclesFans expect Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to have a big impact on upcoming Marvel films. And I’ll take Kevin Feige’s note as one Deadpool and Wolverine Wit is just one way to maintain that collaboration.

In the same appearance, Reynolds spoke more about the decision to cut a joke from the third Dead Pool Flick and says:

As soon as someone says something like, “It’s Ryan, Bob Iger.” I would love it if you took that one line out. It’s going to make life really difficult for us here.’ As soon as they say that, something tells me, ‘Gotta toe the line! Precious!’ And once the fog of war clears and you have a second thought, you think, “Of course I can take that out.” Can I say something about Pinocchio instead? And the answer is yes!

While some fans (and perhaps even Ryan Reynolds) were nervous about how Deadpool’s R-rated sensibilities would translate to the MCU, the third film definitely didn’t hold back. We’ve got lots of F-bombs, wild jokes and gory violence. There’s only one joke that didn’t make it into the theatrical cut at the studio’s behest.

Only time will tell how the Merc with a Mouth will factor into future MCU projects. But fans are looking forward to possible crossovers, hopefully as part of a big blockbuster like Avengers: End of the World. We’ll just have to wait and see if the cut joke from the threequel is revealed at some point.
