The Packers projected they would land a bruised running back as a free agency surprise

The Green Bay Packers have plenty of offensive depth in 2024, but running back appears to be the exception.

Career Packer AJ Dillon is out for the season and rookie MarShawn Lloyd has been frequently injured, leaving only second-year undrafted free agent Emanuel Wilson to replace Packers starter Josh Jacobs.

The Packers are used to having a strong running game, and not being able to rely on multiple defenders is a little uncomfortable right now. While they likely won’t address the issue immediately, Green Bay could be in the market for backfield insurance in 2025.

On Monday, Bleacher Report’s NFL scouting department predicted that the Packers would sign backup D’Onta Foreman from the Cleveland Browns in free agency next season to add some depth and brute force to their backfield.

“With AJ Dillon and Emanuel Wilson heading into free agency this offseason, Green Bay could use another running back to take some of the load off Josh Jacobs’ shoulders,” the authors said.

“In particular, the offense could use a bat between the tackles, which fits Foreman’s profile. He could be a good complement to Jacobs and should be a relatively inexpensive addition in free agency.”

The 28-year-old Foreman has traveled extensively and is currently playing for his fifth team in Cleveland. His best season came in 2022, when he amassed 914 rushing yards as a part-time starter for the Carolina Panthers.

Foreman isn’t the type of signing a fan base is looking forward to in the offseason, but he could add valuable depth to Jacobs. Bell saddles tend to wear out quickly, and Jacobs has a lot of tread on his tires, with more than twice as much tread as Foreman.

If the Packers are looking for a veteran on their offensive depth chart, Foreman appears to be the ideal addition. The question will be whether they value him more than other running back-needy teams in 2025.
