NASS Releases Web Map Application for 2022 Census of Agriculture | News, sports, jobs

HARRISBURG – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released a collection of interactive maps to help data users access key Census of Agriculture information. The redesigned Ag Census Web Maps application provides the public with access to maps and accompanying data to make it easier to visualize, download and analyze Census of Agriculture data down to the county level. The application compiles maps and statistics from the 2022 Census of Agriculture into five broad categories – Crops and Plants, Economy, Farms, Livestock and Animals, and Producers – and associated subcategories.

“NASS is excited to provide the public with customizable, interactive and accessible ways to work with the vast repository of Census of Agriculture data.” said Kevin Pautler, acting director of the Northeast Region Field Office. “The Ag Census Web Maps application allows users to visualize the state of American agriculture in a way that no other Census of Agriculture product offers.”

A user of Ag Census Web Maps may: select a map to display from one of the general categories and associated subcategories; Create maps that show the variation of a single piece of data across the country (e.g. the average value of agricultural products sold per farm). Select a county and view and download the county’s data for a general category. Download the dataset of mapped US county-level values for all categories and more. The resulting products provide producers, agribusinesses, policymakers, community planners and the general public with easy access to factors affecting agriculture and producers in more than 3,000 counties across the country.

NASS has also made available on its website a number of new products related to the 2022 Agricultural Census: Agricultural Product Market Value Rankings; state and county profiles; Congressional district profiles and rankings; the racial, ethnicity and gender profiles; the Watersheds Report; and the American Indian Reservations Report. Additionally, Puerto Rico’s 2022 Agricultural Census data was released on July 18 and can be viewed on the NASS Agricultural Census website.

Upcoming agricultural census releases include the Specialty Crops release on October 17 and ZIP Code Tables on November 7. Other products to be released this fall include additional agricultural census highlights, which can be found on the NASS website at www.nass.usda.gov/Publications/Highlights. The agricultural census highlights cover topics such as producer demographics, raw material characteristics and more.

The complete Census of Agriculture report includes more than 6 million data points about America’s farms and ranches and the people who run them. It can be accessed at Nass.usda.gov/AgCensus. Ag census data can also be found in NASS’s searchable online Quick Stats database.

In preparation for the 2027 Census of Agriculture, NASS is already soliciting substantive changes and encouraging new producers who did not receive a 2022 Census of Agriculture questionnaire last year to register for inclusion in future censuses and surveys. Both forms can be found at wet.usda.gov.
