What’s at stake on Monday?

When the Braves and Mets face off in a doubleheader on Monday, playoff spots will open up for both teams. Since the Diamondbacks and Mets won on Sunday and the Braves lost, the Diamondbacks can only reach the postseason if either the Mets or Braves win the doubleheader. The Diamondbacks would be the No. 6 seed in this scenario.

Arizona Diamondbacks @setbacks

So here’s the catch:
If either the Braves or Mets win their doubleheader tomorrow, it will #Dbacks will reach the postseason as the No. 6 seed in the National League and face the Brewers in Milwaukee in the Wild Card Series.
🤞

If the two teams split, the Braves and Mets respectively enter, with the Braves being the No. 5 seed and the Mets being the No. 6 seed.

This is not good news for the D-backs. The winning team in the first game of the doubleheader will not be particularly motivated to win the second game since they have already secured a playoff spot. The better option in this case might be to give the starters a break, as they will play their first Wild Card game on Tuesday.

Granted, if the Mets win the first game of the doubleheader, they might prefer to secure the 5-seed and face the Brewers rather than the Padres. But would it really be worth putting the starters through a grueling doubleheader before the playoffs?

How we got here: The Braves appeared to be in deep trouble on Sept. 17 when a 6-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds dropped them to 81-70 on the year and two games behind the Mets in the last Wild Map berth. But moving forward, Atlanta has won seven of its last nine games, while the Mets have lost three in a row before Sunday and the Diamondbacks have lost five of their last seven games.

So everything is up for grabs on Monday. Buckle up, baseball fans – it’s going to be a wild end to the MLB regular season.
