Memphis football is back in the win column.

It was a strange game and it started slowly, but the Tigers (4-1) ultimately managed to get past Middle Tennessee (1-4) for a 24-7 win on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Memphis’ defense held the Blue Raiders at bay and the Tigers had enough offense to outrun Middle Tennessee.

Neither team was able to score in the first quarter. Cornerback Kobee Minor forced a fumble deep in Middle Tennessee territory, and Memphis capitalized on it with a rushing touchdown. Mario Anderson rushed for over 100 yards while Elijah Herring had 10 tackles and two sacks for a Memphis defense that needed to bounce back after last week’s debacle at Navy. Ultimately, they got it done, holding the Blue Raiders to just seven points and forcing two turnovers.

It was the Tigers’ final non-conference game. They have a week off before hitting the road to face South Florida.

Thomas is apparently out with a leg injury

Memphis’ already tight running back room became even smaller after Thomas apparently suffered an injury to his right leg. When he went into the medical tent, he couldn’t put any weight on it.

Kobee Minor forced a fumble on MTSU quarterback Nicholas Vattiato with a huge hit, and Brandon Thomas rushed for a 2-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession to give the Tigers a lead.

Memphis and MTSU tied after a scoreless first quarter

Both teams had chances to score, with Memphis missing a field goal and then MTSU fumbling out of the back of the end zone. It’s been a sloppy game so far, and the score is tied at the end of the first quarter as Memphis prepares to punt.
