This California neighborhood is among the ‘coolest in the world’: report

Do you live in one of the “coolest” neighborhoods in the world?

Time Out just released its list of the 38 coolest neighborhoods in the world, and only one neighborhood in California made the prestigious list.

To compile the rankings, the publication’s editors and writers ranked the selections based on criteria such as food, drink, art, culture, street life, community and the neighborhood’s “unique local flavor.”

The top spot goes to Notre-Dame du Mont in Marseille, France, for its “rebellious spirit” and the “jovial, relaxed atmosphere of a local market,” the editors wrote.

Mers Sultan in Casablanca, Morocco followed in second place, followed by Pererenan, Bali, Indonesia in third place. Seongsu-dong in Seoul, South Korea and Kerns in Portland, Oregon rounded out the top five.

The only California neighborhood to make the cut is East Hollywood, Los Angeles, at No. 26. The publication considered East Hollywood to be the East Hollywood Neighborhood Council area bounded by Hollywood Boulevard, Hoover Street, Western Avenue and 101st Freeway is limited.

“Free from Tinseltown’s tourist traps, neighboring East Hollywood and its subdivisions have begun to stake their claim as LA’s hottest culinary destinations. Much of that is thanks to Melrose Hill, a developer-run apartment complex at Melrose Avenue and Western Avenue whose brick buildings house a dense collection of casual restaurants and the Erewhon-esque LA Grocery & Café. Editors wrote in part.

Other US neighborhoods on the list include Little River Miami (No. 12), Mount Pleasant, Washington DC (No. 29) and Brewerytown, Philadelphia (No. 32).
