Manchester United news: “Never a red card – that’s my opinion” – Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes spoke to BBC Match of the Day after his sending off: “I just wanted to come over and talk [do the interview] and be myself because my teammates deserve this for what they did in the game by playing with one less man. Especially because I was the man who was sent off, the one who let them down.

“The team showed a lot of character, a lot of resilience and a lot of fight. They tried. It wasn’t easy.”

About the red card: “Never a red card – that’s my opinion. I agree that it is a foul. The referee tried to tell me that as he saw it was clear contact with the studs, no. I didn’t touch it with the cleats or.” Even the foot, it was my ankle. It’s a clear foul.

“If he wants to give me a yellow because they go on the counter, then I agree. But more than that, no. That’s not the case.”

On the difficult game before the red card: “Yeah, I think we struggled a bit. We tried to force it a little bit, speed it up and play too fast. When they had the high line, we made mistakes on the ball and then got punished and things didn’t go our way.

“Then the red card makes it even worse. I have to appreciate all the efforts my teammates made to get back into the game, but that wasn’t possible. They showed great commitment and character, and that made me happy.”
