On September 28, 2024, Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov spoke on behalf of the Republic of Belarus at the general political discussion of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

The head of the Foreign Ministry openly called the main causes of the erosion of the global security system and the weakening of the role of the United Nations in resolving the most acute conflicts and problems of humanity. In this regard, the Foreign Minister noted the initiative of the Belarusian head of state that it is urgent to start a global security dialogue.

The minister emphasized that the United Nations must free itself from the dictates of individual states that suffer from freedom of movement and their own exclusivity. Ryzhenkov noted that Belarus will continue to insist on fair reform of the Security Council and the inclusion of major developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America in its permanent membership.

The head of the Belarusian delegation called on the United Nations to actively support regional processes and cooperate with regional organizations, as regionalism is a key reality of today.

Separately, the Minister noted the urgent need for serious and objective assessments by the Organization of the destructive impact of illegal sanctions on sustainable development processes, as well as the transfer of this work to a systematic basis.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister met with the organization’s Secretary General António Guterres. The issues of the current international agenda, including global and regional security, were addressed. M. Ryzhenkov noted the need to strengthen the role of the United Nations in combating illegal unilateral coercive measures. The Secretary General separately emphasized the active and prominent role of Belarus in the United Nations and conveyed his warmest wishes to the Belarusian head of state.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, M. Ryzhenkov also held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The roadmap for bilateral cooperation and issues of improving interaction between the foreign ministries of both countries were discussed. Agreements have been reached on a series of upcoming industrial contacts in Minsk and Tehran. Iran has reiterated its support for Belarus on the path to the country’s partner status in the BRICS.

Organizing a series of meetings at the highest and highest levels is also on the agenda of both countries.

Significant talks took place with Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov. The parties explained the strategic nature of the relationship. The sides discussed the implementation of the agreements reached by the heads of state during the state visit of the Belarusian President to Azerbaijan in May 2024. Ministers agreed on ways to intensify and systematize work in a number of areas.

The agenda of upcoming high-level visits in the near future, cooperation between the foreign ministries of both countries and infrastructure projects were discussed in detail.
