Cal Golden Bears hosts ESPN College GameDay for the first time

The popular ESPN College GameDay will broadcast from the Cal Golden Bears campus in Berkeley, Calif., next Saturday, the broadcast announced Saturday evening. According to the NCAA, this will be the traveling pregame show’s first appearance in Berkeley.

The 3-1 Golden Bears are scheduled to host the undefeated Miami Hurricanes on the evening of October 5th at historic California Memorial Stadium. In another first, the matchup marks Cal’s first home game in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The contest between the Hurricanes and Golden Bears is intriguing and offers tantalizing storylines that are sure to pique the interest of college football fans.

Miami is coming off a dramatic, controversial victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies in Week 5, in which the Hurricanes snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when a last-second Hail Mary pass got past the Hokies for a game-winning touchdown on the Pitch triggered reversed by a remote video playback team.

Cal, which earned a record win over the Auburn Tigers this season, has one of the stingiest defenses in the country. In four games, the Golden Bears have given up a total of 51 points to their opponents, an average of just 12.75 points per game.

Miami quarterback Cam Ward is one of the early Heisman candidates. He has completed over 70 percent of his passes this season, throwing for 1,782 yards and 18 touchdowns with just four interceptions. The speedy signal-caller also managed 146 yards and two more touchdowns.

Unlike the GameDay crew, Ward is familiar with Berkeley. In the offseason, Ward transferred from Washington State to Miami, and last year Cal hosted Ward and Wazzu. The Golden Bears won that game in a 42-39 shootout in which Ward threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns.

Cal will look to pull off an upset against the Hurricanes’ top-10 opponent.
