Portions of I-40 and I-26 will remain closed for days, according to NCDOT

Sections of major roads around Western North Carolina will remain closed for several days due to Helene’s impacts.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is not advising anyone to travel to or around Western North Carolina and motorists should assume all roads are closed.

As of 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, NCDOT said the following portions of Interstates 40, 26 and 240 are closed:

1-40 road closures:

  • Near Asheville/Mile Marker 47 to 50 (Buncombe)
    Both directions until September 30th. at 5:00 p.m
  • East of Asheville/Mile Marker 66 to 72 (Buncombe)
    Both directions until September 28th. at 5:00 p.m
  • Near Black Mountain/Mile Marker 63 to 67 (Buncombe)
    Both directions until September 29th. at noon
  • Near Swannanoa/Mile Marker 59 (Buncombe)
    Eastbound until September 29th. until noon
  • Near TN State Line/Mile Marker 3 (Haywood)
    Head east to TBD
  • Near Lake Junaluska/Mile Marker 20 (Haywood)
    Both directions to TBD
  • Near TN State Line/Mile Marker 15 (Haywood)
    Both directions to TBD
  • Near Old Fort/Mile Marker 66 to 73 (McDowell)
    Both directions until 1.10. at noon

NOTE: An NCDOT spokesperson said crews have not yet completed damage assessments for the closures in Haywood County.

1-26 road closures:

  • Near TN State Line/Mile Marker 0 (Madison)
    Both directions until September 29th. at 12:12 p.m

1-240 road closures:

  • In Asheville/Mile Marker 1 (Buncombe)
    Until September 29th At midnight we head east
