Brownlee adds to his list of magical moments after Clutch Game 2

Justin Brownlee’s recent game winner will be considered one of the best in the mind of Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

Brownlee scored another memorable shot for the Gin Kings when he drained a three-pointer against Allen Durham with 10.1 seconds left to defeat Meralco 104-103 in game two of the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals.

Cone was impressed by the moment that enriches Brownlee’s history in the PBA, with the latest heroic nuances of his stunning three-pointer against Durham that secured the Gin Kings the 2016 Governors’ Cup title.

“We’ve seen so many great games where Justin won across the board. This is another one of them added to the list. Maybe in the top four or five. Maybe,” Cone said.

Cone said Brownlee’s heroics came not only on that three-pointer, but also before the shot when he blocked Durham on the previous possession. Brownlee also played center after Japeth Aguilar fouled out.

More importantly, Brownlee, who finished with 39 points, gave the Gin Kings a 2-0 lead in the quarterfinals, putting them one win away from clinching the series and securing a spot in the semifinals.

“The shot he took. He played defense the entire way and had to play in the center position without Japeth. We place high demands on him and he was up to the challenge and accepted it,” said Cone.

“I just told him that with this performance he will make me sleep a lot better tonight. It was incredible.

Brownlee praised his teammates for trusting him to take the shot.

“My teammates always trust me. They called a play for me. They wanted me to just try to take the lead and take over the game. That’s what I’ve tried to do as best I can. When the double team comes, guys respond to open shots and I tried my best to find them,” he said.

“And it was Maverick (Ahanmisi) who made a big shot down the stretch. It was a big three for us. That gave us a lot of momentum to finish the game,” he added, referring to Maverick Ahanmisi’s three-pointer that gave Ginebra a 101-100 lead, but it was answered with a three-point play from Durham.

Brownlee also praised Durham for the courageous fight he showed, also having 39 points.

“It’s always been hard. In my opinion, Allen has always been one of the best imports in the PBA. It’s always hard. Of course we have history with Ginebra and Meralco playing in the final, with him playing with Meralco. It’s always hard. Give him lots of credit. “The performance he put on was a winning performance,” Brownlee said.

“It was just unfortunate for him that he didn’t get the win. But I give him great credit for what he has done in Meralco, not only this year but also in previous years.”
