Warren beats Fort Frye for the first time since 2007 | News, sports, jobs

VINCENT – Warren used a big play to end the first half and an even bigger one to open the third quarter here Friday night as the host Warriors celebrated their homecoming with a decisive 28-6 victory in the Twin State League against Fort Frye celebrated.

Entering the game ranked No. 22 in Division III, Region 11, head coach Jimmy Peyton’s 6-3 Warriors never trailed, losing five games to the Cadets, who last lost to WHS in 2007 and are still trailing All-time series 24-19-1.

“Owen Thompson is a pretty good football player.” quipped Coach Peyton, who watched his senior linebacker finish with 18 tackles, including a crucial tackle for loss on Cadet quarterback Grady Hesson late in the third period on a four-and-inches snap from the WHS 12, with the guests trailing 21:6. “Owen did a really good job and our kids helped out this week.

“We stumbled and turned it around five times last week (in Point Pleasant). When we faced such adversity in the past, we didn’t always lean to the right. We kind of went the other way. This week was the exact opposite of what we have done in the past. They responded to, adapted to, and overcame adversity. With our defensive effort, we felt like we had a good game plan.”

Fort Frye, which slipped to 6-3 and finished fourth in Division VI, Region 23, lost the total yards battle 301-192 and saw tailback Tyce Beardsley leave with an injury in the first half .

“We have done the things that will beat you.” admitted Cadet principal Eric Huck, whose team wraps up the regular season next Friday at Point Pleasant. “We didn’t stay on the blocks very well. Gave up a few big games. The pass before halftime and the kickoff return.

“You can’t allow games like this against a good team. We made too many mistakes and it cost us. They were coming off the blocks and slowing down the linebackers, and we weren’t talking up front and moving forward the way we needed to. It’s just a game. We have to move on and see what we can do to get better and fix things.”

The Cadets scored a first down on their opening series but suffered a punt.

Warren took the lead for good as the hosts mounted a methodical 17-play, 75-yard scoring drive that took 9:32 to complete.

The Warriors converted a quartet of third downs and once on fourth down before Eric Carr finally hit paydirt with a 6-yard sweep after Devyan Wilson’s extra point at 10:36 of the second for a 7-0 lead.

Fort Frye was called for being offside on the Warriors’ first third down attempt. Jacob Sealey, who hit 5 of 6 for 132 yards, found Caleb Tullius for a 9-yard completion that converted a third down.

After a third-and-14 at their own 46-yard line, Tanner Pepper made an 11-yard grab, which was followed by a 6-yard Sealey sprint for another first down.

Landon Fairbanks, who finished with 79 rushing yards on 18 attempts while Carr had 82 stripes on a dozen totes, converted on a third-and-3 and Carr did the same on a third-and-2 at the Cadet 19.

Freshman Luke Phillis gave the Cadets momentum when he returned the ensuing kickoff 66 yards to the Warren 19, but the visitors turned it over on downs.

Warren decided to roll the dice and go for it on his own 41 mark midway through the second round, but Fairbanks couldn’t win.

The Cadets needed just seven plays to score as Hesson capped the scoring with a 1-yard sneak. However, Warrior Aden Strahler blocked Tytan Waller’s extra point.

Instead of taking the ball at the 35 after Fort Frye shot it out of bounds, the Warriors opted to let the Cadets shoot it again. That ended up costing the hosts 11 yards as they finally took over at the 24th line.

However, that wasn’t a problem, as the hosts said “A-seam” and it led to a 76-yard catch-and-run touchdown strike from Sealey to Fairbanks that set the halftime score with 2:19 left.

“We’ve been working on this all week” Coach Peyton admitted. “We threw it before the game and it was just one of those things. That’s exactly the kind of night we had. It worked. Testament to Jake because he threw a dime and Fairbanks caught the ball and shot it.

“That was our focus at halftime, continuing to tackle well, and we wanted to come out and score a touchdown on the first drive.”

Carr took the second-half kickoff and took off toward the seam on the Warriors’ side before seeing a hole, cutting it to the middle and then outrunning everyone to score an 89-yard touchdown.

“I just saw green and started running.” said Carr, who, when asked what this win meant, replied: “A lot. We’re just trying to change the culture out here. Beating Fort Frye is one of them because we haven’t beaten them in years.

“It just means a lot to all of us. Of course I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my team. We played as a team. Last week wasn’t so good, but we improved in training and played like a team. I’m proud of my boys.”

Fort Frye crossed midfield on the kickoff return, but a holding penalty helped thwart the drive. The second FFHS drive ended at 2:40 of the third when Thompson crossed the Cadet line and tripped Hesson.

“This is great” Thompson said. “We prepared for all of this and expected to win all week, like the coach said. So we can’t be happier.”

What’s the difference from this week to last?

“Just our settings all week” Thompson added. “The coach told us all week that we could win and we believed in it and came out and won. The scoreboard proves it.”

Warren, which hosts rival Marietta next Friday, scored its final six-pointer at 10:07 of the fourth on a 2-yard TD run by Sealey.

Tyler Plummer ended the Cadets’ final drive by beating Hesson, who finished 6 of 13 for 57 yards.

Clayton Miller led the Cadets with 10 carries for 70 yards.

Virat Kohli is the only Indian cricketer not to celebrate Rachin Ravindra’s wicket; No-out decision sparks on-air debate

Virat Kohli is the only Indian cricketer not to celebrate Rachin Ravindra’s wicket; No-out decision sparks on-air debate

Despite a gutsy display with the bat from Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma in the second innings, New Zealand continued to dominate India in the ongoing first Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After defeating the hosts for 46, New Zealand put up a spirited show with bat in hand. Left-handed batsman Rachin Ravindra was the BlackCaps’ top scorer as he scored his first India ton in the longest format. However, there was drama in the second session, which once again sparked a major debate about the Decision Review System (DRS).

India’s Virat Kohli (l) gestures during the first test between India and New Zealand (AFP)

There was a controversial call on the first ball of the 89th over. Team India appealed after the ball went past Rachin Ravindra’s outside edge. Dhruv Jurel caught the ball confidently and field referee Michael Gough declared the ball out.

After consulting with Ajaz Patel, who was on the non-striker side, Ravindra hesitantly went for the review. There was a small spike on UltraEdge, but only one frame after the ball passed the bat. Third umpire Richard Illingworth said he could see some daylight and therefore overturned the decision and Ravindra was given a big reprieve.

DRS decision leads to major comment debate

As soon as the verdict was announced, Harsha Bhogle and Ian Smith, who were present as commentators at the time, expressed their views on it. Harsha Bhogle recalled the time he read an article by former ICC Elite umpire Simon Taufel.

“Read an article by Simon Tauffel who said if there is a spike, one frame after it passes the bat, that is still acceptable to the third umpire,” Bhogle said on air.

At this point, Ian Smith asked the spectators to focus on Virat Kohli, who was positioned at first slip. As soon as the replays were played, one could clearly see that Virat Kohli wasn’t celebrating at all.

Harsha Bhogle then said that if there was “a list of the most expressive people” in the world, Virat Kohli would be at the top. Citing this fact, Harsha Bhogle described Ian Smith’s observation as “great”.

Talking about the current first Test between India and New Zealand, the latter scored 402 runs in the first innings to take an impressive lead of 356 runs.

Rachin Ravindra top-scored for the Kiwis as he scored 134 runs off just 157 balls. The left-handed batsman’s innings was peppered with 13 fours and four sixes.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he returned with a three-wicket haul.

“Lady Killer” brags about playing video games all day while his wife earns money and does household chores

“Lady Killer” brags about playing video games all day while his wife earns money and does household chores

A Chinese man is going viral for being a withheld man whose Japanese wife takes complete care of him financially. The man nicknamed “Woman Murderer” shared his story online and amassed over a million followers on Douyin in just a month.

The man has lived in Japan for eight years and shares his experiences as a “kept man.” In Japan, men are considered the main breadwinners of a family, while women focus primarily on housework. That’s why the man known online as “Sudden Fantasy” is causing controversy.

SCMP reported that he built a following of 1.4 million on Douyin in just one month.

Sudden Fantasy describes himself as “an ordinary man from Beijing” and says his wife is well-educated and working. She also belongs to a rich Japanese family whose mother has traveled to several international destinations.

He says that because of his financial problems, he did not think about having a romantic relationship with his wife, who is called Fenghua in Chinese. However, at some point he had difficulty eating anything at all.

At this time, Fenghua brought him food and helped him pay his tuition fees. The couple dated for two and a half years before getting married.

He doesn’t even help with the housework

Sudden Fantasy soon decided to quit his job and now relies completely on his wife for everything. He says he just plays video games all day while his wife works to meet all her needs. She also does all the household chores and he doesn’t even actively help her.

He shared that his wife kept a jar in the house containing 260,000 yen (US$1,740) for his daily expenses. He says he doesn’t even think about paying her back because that would “make her cry.”

In his videos he talks in detail about his life as a reserved man and talks about mutual support and understanding in a relationship. He says that on Sundays he stays in bed with his wife until noon, although he himself wakes up at 7 a.m. because she sleeps until then.

He states that he does this so that his wife is not afraid of sleeping late at night. Even though he doesn’t work around the house, he says he always stands by her so she doesn’t get “resentful.” He takes care of little things like making sure she goes to the bathroom first so she doesn’t have to step on a wet floor.

In his opinion, the way to be a well-groomed man is to improve each other’s lives.

Breanna Stewart plays for Liberty Legacy in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals

Breanna Stewart plays for Liberty Legacy in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals

The New York Liberty had trouble with the officials after an 82-80 loss to the Minnesota Lynx in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals. Coach Sandy Brondello even uncharacteristically lost her temper in the postgame press conference, which was decided by Lynx free throws.

But even if they are right that the referees need to get better, the same goes for their superstar player: Breanna Stewart.

Stewart was brilliant in Liberty’s Game 3 win, but she left something to be desired in the team’s two losses in the series. Among other things, she shot just 5-for-21 when her team had a chance to close out a championship on Friday. Since many of these misses were due to shots, she usually finished inside and looked clean while jumping. She was still able to impact the game in other ways, both on the boards and on defense. But she is held to the level of a superstar.

The poor shooting performance also stems from Stewart having a chance to win Game 1 at the free throw line, where she missed the second of two shots. She then blew up a bunny at the end of overtime that would have tied the score, giving New York fans Patrick Ewing flashbacks.

Of course, Stewart’s professional resume remains unimpeachable, regardless of the outcome of this series. She went 4-4 in college at UConn and has two WNBA championships with the Seattle Storm, along with two MVPs, including one last season with the Liberty.

The problem is that Stewie didn’t get to cap her last MVP title with a title, as New York lost the 2023 Finals to the Las Vegas Aces. And Stewart was just 3-17 in the final game of that series.

A player of her caliber simply can’t follow that by not finishing the job in 2024, especially with the loaded Liberty team she’s playing with and stricken teammate Sabrina Ionescu bringing New York to the brink brought to the championship. Otherwise, she will rightly incur the ire of the WNBA and many Liberty fans for not bringing home the hardware in the big city.

Stewart and Co. will have another chance to put away the Lynx on Sunday in Brooklyn. But to do that, she has to be better than she was in the first and last games of these fantastic WNBA Finals. Your Liberty legacy depends on it.

Vote Yes to the Belpre School Levy | News, sports, jobs

Vote Yes to the Belpre School Levy | News, sports, jobs

Letter to the editor (graphic illustration/MetroCreative)

We have an upcoming election in Belpre to pass the school maintenance levy. This millage has not been increased since 1984. It is simply a continuation of the existing taxes. Like most of you, I believe in education. We must pass this levy to make our schools better for our young students.

I know how hard it is to get votes when running for mayor of Belpre. I don’t want to sit on the school board. They find it difficult to enforce this tax. I have already seen signs in the yards asking us to vote against this tax. Nevertheless, I think the board is a little irresponsible. For the past three years I have been the head football coach at Belpre. I was told that the school board wants the head coach to be a school teacher. I should step down as head coach and become an assistant coach. I decided against it. Now the rumor is that I’m retired. I didn’t retire. As head coach, I bought the uniforms for the team. The nets needed to be replaced and I bought them. Many of our games are two hours away and I would buy dinner for the team on the way home. I have been a substitute teacher at Belpre City Schools for seven years. During COVID I was sub and in school every day. Didn’t miss a sick day. It was hard, but I also quit as a substitute teacher at Belpre City Schools. Unfortunately, I’m not the only head coach who was replaced by a teacher. We had a head coach for 32 years. The last game of the season took place on a Thursday. On Friday, the next day, the athletic director informed this coach that he would not be rehired for the next season. He was replaced as head coach by a teacher. Then another sport, a 17 year old assistant coach who was interviewing for a head coach position. The selection committee unanimously selected the assistant for the head coach position, but was overlooked by the board and hired a coach with no varsity experience.

It is not my intention to complain. Could or should I be angry and vote against the levy and punish the students? No. I love Belpre and as an alumnus I want only the best for our students and schools. A school is the heartbeat of the community. Sporting events, band competitions and science fairs bring the community together. Belpre is in a great location. Other cities are jealous of our growth. A new children’s hospital is being built. 200 new employees are hired. But if we don’t pass a school levy, none of these workers with children will choose Belpre because of our schools. The upcoming election is about a maintenance levy. Each time a new school levy was rejected on the ballot. Our schools are old and need to be replaced. It only makes sense to pass a new school levy. In our old schools, something constantly needs to be replaced, which makes it more expensive to maintain.

Your taxes are never determined based on the actual assessed value of your home. With better schools, property values increase and YOU make a profit when you sell. If you want to sell your house, there is a good chance it will go to a family with children. Will the buyer choose your home or look at another community with better schools?

It’s time to forget about putting up “no voting” signs in our yards because our friend got fired from school ten years ago or someone who wasn’t qualified was hired for a better position. It’s time we look past the pettiness. Let’s not look at what’s best for me. Let’s look at what’s best for our schools and our community. Vote yes to the submission.

Bronny James made his first preseason start for the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday evening in the away game against the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers gave all five starters a break with LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and D’Angelo Russell. They also used a few backup players in Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie and rookie Dalton Knecht who have rotation spots.

This gave players like James a great opportunity to develop, see more playing time on the field and become more prominent players on offense.

James definitely had his moments in this game, even though the Golden State Warriors rolled over LA that night. He got an early throw thanks to a Jalen Hood-Schifino feed.

James had struggled shooting in summer league and preseason before this game, but he performed well offensively on Friday as the lights shined on him. He scored his first three goals of the preseason, was more aggressive than usual and also proved efficient.

Fans were impressed with his efforts, while some also noted how difficult it is for James to get through his rookie year in front of so many spectators.

I really feel for Bronny James. The child was thrown into the deep end of the pool without swimming lessons while everyone watched.

The Lakers’ preseason ends after Friday. Next up is the regular season, starting with the Minnesota Timberwolves coming to LA on Tuesday.
