Haunted House raises money for Habitat for Humanity Hiawathaland

Haunted House raises money for Habitat for Humanity Hiawathaland

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WLUC) – Ghouls and ghosts are roaming the halls of Habitat for Humanity Hiawathaland for the next two weekends.

Annabel, a spooky doll, and the other dolls say they like to closely monitor the haunted house’s visitors.

“We want to make sure everyone stays calm and collected,” Annabel said.

And if not?

“We’re making them angrier,” Annabel said.

Annabel and her friends haunt the halls during Habitat for Humanity Hiawathaland’s seventh annual spooky fundraiser.

Executive Director Ann MacGregor says the fundraiser brings in more than 30% of the money the nonprofit raises annually at events.

“The fundraisers help us have the money for our home repair programs and work on our rehab homes in our community,” MacGregor said.

MacGregor said the organization relies almost 100% on money from fundraisers and donations.

“This is extremely important for us. I mean, the more people come forward for this. They’re not just having fun,” MacGregor said. “You really are helping maybe a co-worker, their friends, a family member, a neighbor, anyone in the community.”

MacGregor said community members can also help the nonprofit by getting involved.

“We need volunteers and no matter what your interest is, we can find them for you,” MacGregor said. “Whether you want to work on a fundraiser, work in our building, help with landscaping or whatever you want to do, we have the right job for you.”

The haunted house costs $6 for children, $8 for adults and $30 for families of up to 6 people.

Will a Texas death row inmate’s life be spared?

Will a Texas death row inmate’s life be spared?

In a stunning chain of events, a man scheduled for execution was granted an eleventh-hour stay by the Texas Supreme Court. But he’s not out of the woods yet.

Robert Roberson, 57, would be the first American ever executed for murder related to the so-called “shaken baby syndrome.”

He was scheduled to die by lethal injection on Thursday evening and was spared for now by Texas lawmakers and the state Supreme Court.

What happens next could lead to either another execution or an extremely rare act of clemency in the state that is leading the way for the death penalty in the United States.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), Texas has executed 591 people since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

That’s more than a third of the 1,602 executions carried out nationwide.

During that same period, the state granted clemency only three times, according to DPIC figures.

Roberson – who was convicted in the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis – hopes to be the fourth Texan to receive leniency despite losing several appeals in state courts.

On Wednesday, the state parole board rejected Roberson’s request for clemency, recommending that his sentence not be commuted to life in prison and that his execution be postponed.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has the power to stop an execution regardless of the panel’s recommendation, also declined to do so. In nearly a decade as the state’s leader, Abbott has only commuted a sentence once.

But also on Wednesday, in response to calls to save Roberson’s life, a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the Texas House of Representatives issued a subpoena for him to testify before their panel next week.

Then, about 90 minutes before Roberson’s scheduled execution, the House Criminal Justice Committee filed a temporary restraining order against the state, forcing it to pause the proceedings.

Although a divided Texas Criminal Appeals Court rejected the order, lawmakers called on the Texas Supreme Court to intervene.

The execution was immediately halted so Roberson could sit before the House panel.

The hearing is currently scheduled to take place on Monday at noon local time in Austin, the state capital.

The five Republicans and four Democrats on the committee will hear from Roberson and others about how the state’s junk science law – which allows inmates to challenge convictions based on later discredited scientific findings – may have affected his case.

“For over 20 years, Roberson has spent 23.5 hours every day in solitary confinement in a cell no larger than most Texans’ closets, longing to be heard,” committee members Joe Moody and Jeff Leach wrote in a joint statement on Thursday evening.

“And while some courthouses may have failed him, the Texas House has not.”

Roberson has long maintained his innocence and his lawyers say his daughter suffered from several health problems before her death, including side effects from prescribed medications unsuitable for a toddler and acute pneumonia that progressed to sepsis.

Advocates also said manifestations of Roberson’s autism, which went undiagnosed until 2018, were used against him in the criminal investigation.

Brian Wharton, the lead investigator in the case, is among those supporting a clemency petition, writing in a letter that “my involvement in it will haunt him forever.” [Roberson’s] Arrest and prosecution. He is an innocent man.”

But prosecutors contend Roberson is guilty of murder and there is evidence that Nikki Curtis was shaken and abused by her father.

“Everything he continues to complain about has been litigated in state and federal courts, and each court has rejected his arguments,” they wrote earlier this month.

First National Bank of Lindsay closes, FDIC takes over deposits

First National Bank of Lindsay closes, FDIC takes over deposits

On Friday, the First National Bank of Lindsay was closed by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) appointed as receiver. To protect depositors, the FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with First Bank & Trust Co., based in Duncan, Oklahoma, which will assume the insured deposits of the failing bank.

First National Bank of Lindsay’s sole office will reopen as a First Bank & Trust Co. branch on Monday, October 21, 2024, during its normal business hours. All depositors of the closed bank will automatically become depositors of First Bank & Trust Co. and their insured deposits will continue to be covered by the FDIC. Customers do not have to change their banking relationship to maintain deposit protection.

Over the weekend, customers will continue to have access to their insured deposits via check, ATM or debit card, and checks drawn at the bank will continue to be processed. Loan customers should continue to make payments as usual.

For uninsured deposits, the FDIC has announced that it will make 50 percent of these funds available to depositors beginning Monday, October 21, 2024, with the possibility of increasing this amount if assets of the insolvent bank are sold.

As of June 30, 2024, First National Bank of Lindsay reported total assets of $107.8 million and total deposits of $97.5 million. About $7.1 million of the deposits exceeded the FDIC’s insurance limits. However, this number may change as the FDIC collects more information from customers.

Customers with accounts over $250,000 are encouraged to contact the FDIC at 1-866-314-1744 for assistance in discussing their deposits. The phone line will operate with extended hours throughout the weekend and into next week.

Starting Monday, depositors with accounts over $250,000 can visit the FDIC’s “Is My Account Fully Insured?” page. Website to check your insurance coverage, HERE.

First Bank & Trust Co. has agreed to assume the insured deposits at a premium of 6.67 percent and acquire approximately $20 million in assets of First National Bank of Lindsay. The FDIC will retain the remaining assets for future sale.

The preliminary cost of the bank failure to the FDIC’s Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) is estimated at $43 million. The final cost may vary as the FDIC sells the remaining assets. Alleged fraud is cited as the reason for the bank’s closure and the resulting costs for the DIF.

The closure of the First National Bank of Lindsay marks the second bank failure in the United States this year. The most recent occurred when Republic First Bank in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania failed on April 26, 2024. In Oklahoma, the most recent bank failure occurred at Freedom State Bank in Freedom, Oklahoma, on June 27, 2014.

Shriners Children’s Open presents PBR, South Point 400, PGA Tour in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Raiders, Golden Knights and UNLV will all be playing on the road this weekend, but that hasn’t stopped the Las Vegas sports scene.

The Shriners Children’s Open, South Point 400, PGA Tour and PBR are in for an eventful weekend.

“Huge weekend for the city of Las Vegas. “A huge weekend for the sports world,” said Matt West, PBR spokesman.

Las Vegas is returning to its roots.

“The original sports of Las Vegas have always been rodeo, racing and golf,” said Brendan Gaughan.

Year after year, the Shriners Children’s Open, NASCAR and PBR return to the Valley to showcase the city’s ability to host massive, quality sporting events.

Some say events like this set the tone and pave the way for even bigger events like the Super Bowl.

“There was a time about 25 years ago when you would occasionally have a boxing match. “We were able to put Las Vegas on the map with a one-day event with more than 100,000 attendees,” said Chris Powell, president and general manager of Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Without the support of Las Vegas, the PBR would not exist today,” a spokesman said.

Local NASCAR driver Noah Gragson has had a front-row seat to the evolution of the Las Vegas sports scene.

“So many different live sporting events,” said Sean Gleason, PBR CEO and commissioner. “Being able to gain my first experience here at the race means a lot to me. It really is a sports town and has had a lot of support.”

With a jam-packed weekend ahead, gratitude was evident everywhere.

“We appreciate having the Shriners Children’s Open with the PBR in conjunction with the NASCAR race,” Gaughan said.

‘We Live in Time’ stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh talk about producing new romantic drama – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

We could all use a good shout out every now and then, and if you’re looking to let it all out this weekend, grab some tissues because Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are going to make you cry in their new romantic drama.

Florence Pugh (as Almut): “Your father and I want something.”

Andrew Garfield (as Tobias): “Your mom and I want something – we want to talk to you.”

Some on-screen romances begin with a meet-cute.

Character in “We Live in Time”: “We’ll make sure you have the time of your life.”

Florence Pugh (as Almut): “Hello.”

Andrew Garfield (as Tobias): “Hello. “

But in Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s new film “We Live in Time,” “Smite” comes before “Smitten.”

A bit as if the filming of this film took place before Florence’s vacation.

Florence Pugh: “Originally I wanted to take a break and have some time for myself, and no, no, no. no no no. And when I read it I thought, ‘Well, obviously there are other plans.'”

The film explores the relationship between a chef and a recently divorced woman over the course of 10 years… through all the ups and downs, in sickness and in health.

Florence Pugh: “I somehow couldn’t believe that I would be able to make one of these films – a film about really, really pure love – and of course with my own accent and as a young couple from London. ”

Speaking of love, Andrew has a lot of love for Flo.

Andrew Garfield: “Florence’s unique talent is unmatched and her power – as a performer, as an actress, as a person – is completely unique. And to get the chance to dance with that and experience that in such an intimate story felt like a privilege.”

And the admiration is definitely mutual.

Florence Pugh: “The fact that he was on board and knew that I was going to do it with him, the chances that it would feel as magical as it read, I definitely felt like there was huge potential there, and “That was extremely exciting.”

Andrew Garfield (as Tobias): “I owe it to myself to look ahead, instead of right in front of me, at you.”

“We Live in Time” is now in cinemas.

30 coaches wanted this underrated Patriots star to become a free agent

New England Patriots special teams coach Jeremy Springer said 30 other special teams coaches around the league texted him after learning of Brenden Schooler’s contract extension.

The defensive back and standout special teamer signed a three-year, $9 million contract extension with the Patriots last week. According to Springer, the other coaches claimed they would have been interested in Schooler if he had hit the open market.

Schooler was named to the 2022 PFWA All-Rookie Team. Since his first NFL season, he has continued to grow and improve with 32 total tackles and four fumble recoveries in 38 games played.

He was a valuable member of the Patriots’ special teams unit, and nearly every special teams coach, including Springer, has acknowledged that in some way.

The Patriots have made a point of re-signing their in-house talent during the offseason and throughout the regular season. Schooler might be the most underrated addition to the group.
