Atlas Comet: Why this weekend is the best time to see comets and meteor showers

Atlas Comet: Why this weekend is the best time to see comets and meteor showers

This weekend would be a good time to look for a comet in the night sky.

The weather agency says we will have clear skies this weekend and the best time to look for the comet is just after dark.

Sunset is around 6:15pm these days and it’s pretty dark by 7pm

The early evening sky will remain very dark this weekend as the moon rises later and later. Look for it to appear after 7pm on Saturday and after 8pm on Sunday.

It turns out that only the full moon shines all night. At other times of the night, the moon rises at different times.

With darker skies, it’s easier to find the comet in your western sky and photograph it using your phone’s night vision settings.

If you use night mode, i.e. shoot slowly over a period of three to ten seconds, the comet’s tail will show up better in your image.

If you’re not sure how to turn on the night setting, you can often find guides like this one for iPhone when you google it.

Once the moon rises, it remains in the sky for the rest of the night and into the morning sky, even after the sun has risen.

The moon is still very large and bright and therefore it will be more difficult to see the annual meteor shower in October.

Still, this weekend is a good time to look for it.

This meteor shower is caused by a comet, but not the one we see in the early evening sky.

It is caused by the dust left in space by Halley’s Comet. This comet will be visible in our sky again in 2061.

Meanwhile, every year, when Earth hits the spot where Halley’s Comet passed through our part of space, some of the comet’s dust, often the size of grains of sand, falls to Earth.

This rock dust moves the air high up in our sky and gives it a little more energy. The air there is not designed to store additional energy, so it releases it as light. The light we see is a shooting star.

When you see a meteor, nothing actually burns.

The dust, which causes the air to emit flashes of light, becomes smaller and smaller as it falls. At some point it becomes so small that you can’t even see it anymore. This is why we don’t get meteor shower souvenirs on the farm.

The best time to view the meteor shower is between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday and Monday morning. Then the number of shooting stars reaches its peak.

We have the opportunity to observe a shooting star about once or twice every half hour. Look east, the same part of your sky where the sun rises.

There you will see a cluster of stars known as Orion. Since the meteors originate there, the shooting star round in October is named after them. It’s called the Orionid meteor shower.

CFB Week 8 odds, tips, best bets

CFB Week 8 odds, tips, best bets

Before the season, Oklahoma State had a win projection of 8.5 and ranked third in the Big 12 in odds.

BYU, on the other hand, had an overall win rating of 4.5 and ranked last in the Big 12 odds.

After seven weeks the script changed. The Cougars are off to a 6-0 start while the Cowboys limped to 3-3.

BYU is a 9.5-point home favorite against Oklahoma State on Friday night.

Let’s dive into the matchup and make a prediction.

Oklahoma State vs. BYU odds

team Spread Money line Over/Under
Oklahoma State +9.5 (-110) +275 o52.5 (-110)
BYU -9.5 (-110) -350 u52.5 (-110)
Odds via bet365

When Oklahoma State has the ball

Despite Ollie Gordon being the reigning Doak Walker Award winner, Oklahoma State’s rushing offense has been terrible this season.

The Cowboys rank 131st in rushing success rate, and Gordon’s average has dropped from 6.1 yards per carry last year to 3.8 yards per carry this year. There are two problems.

First, the Cowboys’ offensive line has dramatically underperformed. Despite bringing plenty of crucial experience, the Pokes rank 100th in Pro Football Focus’ run-blocking rankings.

Ollie Gordon’s numbers are down drastically compared to last year when he won the Doak Walker Award. Getty Images

Second, the Cowboys struggled to find any semblance of a threatening downfield passing game that allowed opponents to occupy the box without fear of being overplayed.

Quarterback Alan Bowman, playing his seventh year of college football, was struggling. During the Cowboys’ current three-game losing streak, he has completed just 50% of his passes and thrown six interceptions.

Oklahoma State is expected to play redshirt sophomore Garret Rangel or redshirt freshman Zane Flores in place of Bowman on Friday, according to Action Network college football insider Brett McMurphy.

Rangel has completed just 51% of his passes and thrown seven touchdowns and six interceptions in 12 games over three seasons. Flores has yet to appear at the collegiate level. Can we expect either one to be successful on the road against a BYU defense that ranks 13th in pass success rate allowed?

When BYU has the ball

Former JUCO quarterback Jake Retzlaff had an incredible season at BYU, throwing 14 touchdowns and five interceptions in the team’s 6-0 start.

He has led the Cougars to a top-50 passing attack in EPA/pass and yards per dropback.

Retzlaff should thrive in this game against an Oklahoma State defense that ranks below 90th in PFF’s pass rush and coverage grades.

The Cougars’ running game has lagged behind their passing game this year, but injuries to LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati were the primary cause.

Both players returned against Arizona and combined for 114 yards on 20 carries. The duo should be able to continue that success against an Oklahoma State defense that allows a staggering 6.4 yards per carry, the sixth-most in the country.

Choosing between Oklahoma State and BYU

The situational aspect of this game would make me think about Oklahoma State.

According to Action Network, head coach Mike Gundy has a 31-17 consecutive record and 26-19-3 against the team (58%) with more than 10 days to prepare.

However, supporting two inexperienced quarterbacks to succeed on the road against a strong BYU pass defense is a difficult task.

Instead, I’m going to dive into the player prop market and back Ropati to finish with 40+ rushing yards.

Betting on college football?

Ropati has dealt with terrible injury luck during his time at BYU, but he has eclipsed 40 rushing yards in all four career games in which he received at least 15 snaps, and he averages an impressive 5 over the course of his career .1 yards per carry.

As a 9.5-point favorite, the Cougars should be able to get their running game going, and I’m rooting for Ropati to find success against the Cowboys’ terrible run defense.

Best Bet: Hinckley Ropati 40+ Rushing Yards (-115, DraftKings)

Police officer pleads guilty to stealing money from criminals

Arica Hutchison was sentenced to six months in prison and two years of supervised release for the fraudulent theft of $18,500

A police officer pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $20,000 in Crime Stoppers reward money.

Accordingly WREGArica Hutchison, one of two police officers assigned to work the Crime Stoppers hotline to help weed out tips for investigators, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft from a program that received federal funding receives. She was recently sentenced to six months in prison and two years of supervised release.

The disgraced cop was accused of manipulating the system to alter data so someone named “KB” could receive $18,500 in rewards from Crime Stoppers.

Records from August 2023 to February 2024 show Hutchinson “used her position in law enforcement” to enter “fraudulent information” into the Crime Stoppers database. She then had a person named “KB” accept the rewards for tips. The reward money describes two incidents from late 2023 in which tips were received for two separate crimes and for which a Crime Stoppers reward money was approved.

Before this reward was to be paid out, Hutchison updated the information in the database.

On January 10, agents from the FBI Memphis field office conducted surveillance at the location where KB was supposed to receive the payment. KB was seen going to the location to collect the reward for the two tips given.

State Police Department records show Hutchison was placed on administrative leave in February. She resigned in April but an internal investigation was still ongoing. The law enforcement officer was charged in federal court on June 3. She pleaded guilty the same day to conspiracy to steal a program that received federal funding.

In addition to her prison sentence, Hutchison must also pay $22,000 in restitution while serving a number of additional prison terms. This includes mental health assessment and counseling, taking a financial literacy course, and substance abuse and alcohol treatment.

Hutchison was with the Memphis Police Department for 17 years before resigning.

“Ladycats earn a win in district play.”

“Ladycats earn a win in district play.”

Destrehan prevailed at home with a dramatic five-set win over Crescent City, 25-19, 25-9, 21-25, 21-25 and 15-13.

The Wildcats traded away most of their roster from a season ago and departed a large senior class, but the team is starting to find itself as it begins district play this week. The Wildcats were scheduled to face Thibodaux in their first District 7-I game of the season on Wednesday (as of press time), and today the team hosts fellow River Parishes rival Lutcher for a non-district matchup at 5 p.m. DHS will be back in district action next week when it travels to Central Lafourche on Wednesday.

Destrehan (12-11) has been battling for first-year head coach Miranda Kelley all year, and Kelley said this group has simply gotten better – and smarter – on the volleyball court as players gain more experience.

“It was really a group of players that were very willing to step up and take the lead,” Kelley said. “Every week we evaluate and look at the stats, chemistry and what works for us. It’s very competitive – players are racing for time and vying to see who will have a bigger role in the next game. They want to win and are willing to work for it.”

Emma Creel had 27 assists and six digs against Crescent City. She has been strong for Destrehan this season, showing multi-dimensional skills on the court. Kelley was equally pleased with her leadership, both on and off the field.

“She really controls the court,” Kelley said. “During the season, I taught the girls to look on the other side of the net and adapt our game to what they were doing. (Creel) communicates with her teammates before every serve and recognizes where teams have open spots or where their stronger players are. She has really embraced that game-planning element…We have players who really make this team their own and she is definitely one of them.”

Harmony Howard had 21 kills to lead the way offensively against Crescent City. Kumiko Xavier was the defensive anchor with 18 digs.

Kelley said Vivien Brouillette was also among the team leaders, both vocally and in terms of productivity. And sophomore Jacee Pate, Kelley said, is progressing and showing a lot of potential since getting more playing time. Pate recently had eight blocks in her first extended action against Walker.

“Everyone is starting to find their place,” Kelley said. “We are very flexible…if someone has an off day or someone is injured, we have girls who can step into a different role and help with that.”

The Wildcats were eager to get district play underway.

“We have a very competitive district,” Kelley said. “We know we have some heavyweights coming up, but we are ready to show what we can do. We know a lot of people have let us down, given the amount of seniors we lost and a new coach…we are ready to go.”

The Cowboys have a pair of wide receivers in junior De’Zhaun Stribling and senior Brennan Presley with four touchdown receptions on the year. Stribling has 29 catches for a team-high 556 yards (19.2 average), including a long of 77 yards. Presley has a team-high 36 receptions for 337 yards (9.4 average) with 36 receiving yards. Stribling is in his second season with the Cowboys after two seasons at Washington State, while Presley is in his fifth year at Oklahoma State.

Senior safety Trey Rucker helps lead the Cowboys defense. He has a team-high 69 tackles, including 40 solo tackles, with two interceptions. The sixth-year veteran is in his fourth season with the program after spending two seasons at Wake Forest. He has 266 career tackles, including 165 solo tackles, with three pass breakups, one forced fumble and six interceptions. Rucker recorded a season-high 17 tackles, including 11 solo, in a 39-31 overtime win over Arkansas on Sept. 7. See which team you should choose here.
