Videos appear to show North Korean troops at Russian military base – POLITICO

Videos appear to show North Korean troops at Russian military base – POLITICO

POLITICO was unable to independently verify the accuracy of the videos or their content.

The videos appeared online as NATO chief Mark Rutte told reporters on Friday that he could not confirm “reports that North Koreans are now actively involved as soldiers in the war effort.”

Citing OSINT experts, Agentstvo reports that the video was likely recorded near the village of Sergeyevka in Primorye, in Russia’s far east, about 200 kilometers from North Korea.

Rumors of Pyongyang’s involvement have been circulating since South Korea publicly warned that Pyongyang plans to increase its involvement in the Kremlin’s war machine, from providing artillery to sending up to 12,000 soldiers.

This week, officials in Kyiv reiterated those warnings.

On Friday, South Korean intelligence said 1,500 special forces had already been sent to Russia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented last week on the news that North Korea had joined its war, dismissing the reports as “just more fake news.”

How North Texas SC coach Michel Garbini is seizing his opportunity before the playoffs

How North Texas SC coach Michel Garbini is seizing his opportunity before the playoffs

“Are you hungry or do you just want to eat?”

That’s the tried-and-true maxim of North Texas SC interim coach Michel Garbini.

His players hear it almost every day. For them it’s very simple: do you just want to win or do you want to win? need win?

Michel comes from Brazil and – like many of his compatriots in this sport – is only known by his first name. Michel knows how important it is to win. Success on the field took him from a small but populous island on the southern coast of Brazil to Belgium, Greece and finally the United States.

His longest stay in the United States was with FC Dallas, where he played for three seasons and became known for his magical left foot.

After a playing career that spanned nearly two decades, Michel settled in Dallas to become an assistant coach for the newly formed North Texas SC – FC Dallas’ second team. In a team with constant squad and personnel changes, Michel was the only constant. On match day he was the man behind the scenes, but in training he was the center of attention. Whether it was position-specific drills, small-sided games or full 11-on-11 games, Michel was there, leading by example with and against players over 20 years his junior.

That changed this June, halfway through North Texas SC’s sixth season. The club’s head coach, John Gall, was appointed to the FC Dallas coaching staff as an assistant to Peter Luccin. Finally Michel got his chance.

“John stepped up and that was good for him,” Michel said. “And I’ve been preparing for this all these years. My time had come. I think we’ve done a good job at the moment and taken the team to the playoffs. I’m super happy to be in this moment with the players and staff.”

Michel is modest. His North Texas team earned the most points in MLS NEXT Pro (62, six more than anyone else), the best goal difference (+24, six more than anyone else) while securing the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. Under Michel’s sole leadership, North Texas went 9-3-4 and won three of four extra-point shootouts.

“He gets the best out of players and it shows in the results, so the transition has been pretty smooth,” said North Texas captain Nico Gordon, who earned a spot in the league’s top XI. “He’s really good, honestly. He likes to play. He has a great passion for the game. He keeps track of the guys so he knows what the guys can give. He’s been with us for a long time and pushes us forward every day.”

Success in the regular season is one thing. The playoffs are another. Michel knows this better than anyone, having helped the club to the league title in his first season in 2019 as assistant to head coach Eric Quill. Seven players from this team later played for FC Dallas, three became regular players for the US men’s national team (Ricardo Pepi, Tanner Tessmann, Bryan Reynolds).

“This team had a lot of talent,” Michel explained. “We can see that they are still playing at the highest level. And it will be the same here this year. In the future we will see some of these players at the highest level. (In 2019) we said, ‘Okay, there’s something special about this group.’ We felt that way. (This year) we’re doing it again.”

To reach the heights of 2019, Michel’s team needs to improve even further. Individually and collectively, they must do their best every day for the next month. But they also can’t look too far ahead. They begin their playoff season this Sunday, October 20, at home against seventh-seeded Whitecaps FC 2. For Michel, having the right mentality is key.

“My question to the players every day is: Are you still hungry or do you just want to eat something?

“I think we’re still starving.”

What does Sinwar’s death mean for Hamas, Gaza and Lebanon? – DW – October 18, 2024

What does Sinwar’s death mean for Hamas, Gaza and Lebanon? – DW – October 18, 2024

In the words of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Wednesday’s assassination of Hamas political chief Yahya Sinwar means that “Hamas will no longer rule Gaza.”

In his view, Sinwar’s death, confirmed on Thursday, marks the beginning of the “day after Hamas.”

However, observers see a different future for the Iran-backed Hamas militia, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the US, the EU and numerous countries.

“The assassination of Sinwar is certainly a blow to Hamas given the important role he played within the organization,” Neil Quilliam, associate fellow at the Middle East and North Africa program at London-based think tank Chatham House, told the DW.

But Quilliam emphasizes that the policy of beheading has done little to undermine Hamas’s will and ability to fight Israel in the past, such as when the 62-year-old Sinwar was killed after the assassination of Hamas’s former political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who took power. in Tehran in July.

“Hamas will recover by drawing on a new generation of leaders, redeveloping its military and technological capabilities, and reaching out to young Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank who have been brutalized by the conflict with Israel,” Quilliam said.

Peter Lintl, scientist at the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP), also shares this view. “Hamas is certainly weakened, but Sinwar’s death is not a death knell for the militia,” he told DW.

“missed opportunity”

Meanwhile, German, French and U.S. officials have expressed hope that Sinwar’s death could provide an opportunity for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Sinwar’s removal from the battlefield “represents an opportunity to find a path forward that brings the hostages home, ends the war and moves us to a day after,” U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Thursday.

But on Friday, just a day after confirming Sinwar’s death, Hamas pledged to hold the hostages in Gaza until the end of the war.

Some 42,000 people have been killed in the past 13 months of the war in Gaza, which was sparked by a deadly Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Hamas-run health authorities.

And of the approximately 250 hostages brought to Gaza by Hamas fighters on October 7, around 100 are believed to still be in captivity.

Nevertheless, Mohammed al-Qawas of the Emirati think tank Emirates Policy Center (EPC) sees Sinwar’s death as a possible start of a “new chapter” in the war in Gaza.

“Once responsibility for ceasefire negotiations is transferred to Hamas leaders abroad, these negotiations will also be subject to external calculations, because all these leaders abroad are influenced by the capitals in which they are based, and perhaps this happens through these capitals, where Hamas is active.” “We can make concessions and introduce a new policy,” says DW.

Hamas’ political leadership is based in Qatar, but since Haniya’s assassination, Gaza-based hardliner Sinwar has been its point of contact for ceasefire negotiations with Israel led by the United States, Qatar and Egypt.

The SWP’s Lintl told DW that despite Sinwar’s death, he sees little reason to hope that Israel might be ready to end the war now.

Although he hailed Sinwar’s death on Thursday as the end of Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also made clear that the war would not end until remaining Hamas leaders – such as Mohammed Sinwar, Yahya Sinwar’s brother and his successor as Hamas military chief – eliminated and all those taken hostage still held by Hamas in Gaza were returned.

For James M. Dorsey, an expert on the region and senior fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies and the Middle East Institute in Singapore, this approach represents a missed opportunity.

“Instead of using Israel’s tactical success to declare victory in Gaza, push for a ceasefire that could also end hostilities in Lebanon and negotiate a prisoner swap that would result in the release of the 101 remaining hostages held by Hamas “Netanyahu insisted that the war would continue until the Israeli military freed the prisoners,” he wrote in his latest post on his political blog, The Turbulent World.

Beyond Gaza – Hezbollah retaliates

Beyond Gaza, Israel has also escalated its conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon after a year of limited skirmishes.

The Iran-backed group – which has been designated a full terrorist organization by the United States and Germany and whose armed wing is designated as such by the European Union – claims to support Hamas.

In September, Israel assassinated its leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Observers note that such killings have not helped to end hostilities.

As Sinwar’s death became known on Thursday, Hezbollah announced a “new and escalating phase” in its war with Israel, claiming it had used precision-guided missiles against Israel for the first time, “escalating from day to day.” Day.”

Will the Eagles ever score in the first quarter again? – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Will the Eagles ever score in the first quarter again? – NBC Sports Philadelphia

They performed 77 pieces. They had 10 trips. They averaged 3.3 yards per rush, gained all 13 first downs and committed two turnovers. And quarterback Jalen Hurts has a passer rating of 59.3, which is 3approx-Worst in the league.

No touchdowns. No field goals. Zero points.

That’s what the Eagles have to show in their first five first quarters this year.

The Eagles became just the fourth NFL team in the last 15 years to go scoreless in the first quarter in their first five games.

This is the first time since 1934, the second year of their existence, that they have failed to score in the first quarter in each of their first five games.

Last year, the Eagles went scoreless in seven straight first quarters.

The last time they scored in the first 15 minutes of a game was with 36 seconds left against Arizona in Week 17 last year on a Hurts TD pass to Julio Jones.

This is bad.

“That’s what we’re trying to work on,” said AJ Brown, who missed three of those first quarters. “I don’t know if it’s necessarily something we can focus on – ‘We’ll start training quickly’ or something like that or whatever.

“But we just try to keep doing what we’re doing and just keep trying to get better. And like I said, in the (Browns) game, the first drive, if I can get things going quickly, I’ll get it going. I was a little rusty so I attended. And then the second trip, which I narrowly missed. So something like that happens. I take responsibility for my part.”

This is the first time since late 1994 – the end of Rich Kotite’s tenure as head coach – that the Eagles have gone seven straight games without a 1-pointerst-Quarter point. And only the fourth time since 1956.

The last time they had a lengthy streak lasted eight games in the 1936 and 1937 seasons.

So if they don’t score in the first quarter against the Giants on Sunday, it would be the first time they’ve gone eight straight games without an 1st-Quarter point in 87 years.

“We had some missed opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on,” Hurts said. “I think it’s not just about what’s going on with the players, but it’s also about getting the first first down. Once you get the first first down, you put yourself in a really good position, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Of those 77 plays the Eagles ran in the first quarter this year, 33-43 percent either lost yards or gained two or fewer yards. Only six managed 10 yards or more.

Lane Johnson suggested quicker adjustments with playcalling and more tempo could get the offense going sooner.

“Of course you can have a game plan, but a lot of things change,” Johnson said. “When you come to the game, they’re going to show you a look that you haven’t practiced. And that’s why I think the adjustments on the sideline are just as important, maybe more important, than the game plan that you have.

“So it’s definitely something we’re addressing. I think we can do some good things if we pick up the pace and get our offense moving quickly. So all in all, we’re going to push the limits and try to get off to a quick start this week. And yes, make it even more of a sense of urgency for us.”

The Eagles scored an above-average number of points after the first quarter.

After the first quarter, the Eagles are averaging 21.2 points per game. That makes them 6Th-Highest point total in the entire NFL starting in the second quarter, behind the Commanders (25.2), Beares (23.0), Ravens (22.7), Bengals (22.2) and Bills (22.0).

But those first few quarters were a nightmare.

“If there was something magical, we would do it,” Nick Sirianni said. “We have to put the boys in a position to be successful. We have to be ready and the guys have to go out and execute. That will always be the case. And we just have to keep trying new formulas. It’s not necessarily the same formula against every team. It depends on the defense you play and the opponent you play against.

You just have to continue to try different formulas of things that have been successful in the past, things that we think can be successful for this team, and sprinkle different formulas in there. We know how important it is that we get on the board first and when they step to us, we immediately go down and score. So it keeps us busy.”

Westville, a fast-casual restaurant, is opening an LIC location at The Cove at the end of the year

Westville, a fast-casual restaurant, is opening an LIC location at The Cove at the end of the year

Photo Queens Post and Instagram @westvillenyc

Oct 18, 2024 By Shane O’Brien

Fast-casual restaurant chain Westville is expected to open a new location in Long Island City by the end of 2024.

Westville, which currently operates eight locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, will open its first Queens location by the end of the year in The Cove, an 18-story building that opened in 2020 at 43-12 Hunter St. in Court Square .

The Cove (NYC HPD)

The new LIC location will initially open for delivery only before introducing full dine-in service in mid-January, Westville founder Jay Strauss said.

Founded in 2003, Westville offers a wide variety of brunch, lunch and dinner options and is known for its monthly specials and dishes featuring fresh market vegetables, including yuca fries, parmesan asparagus, honey Dijon Brussels sprouts and garlic mashed potatoes.

Westville also offers a wide selection of salads, sandwiches, burgers and plates, each consisting of one protein and served with a combination of market vegetables.

The restaurant’s brunch menu, available Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., features a selection of classic brunch specialties, including avocado toast, waffles, steak and eggs, and a California-inspired Egg Benedict.

Strauss said each of the eight existing Westville locations is nearly identical and customers can expect a similar experience once the Long Island City location opens later in the year.

Photo Instagram @westvillenyc

He added that the food at the Long Island City location will be exactly the same as the existing Westville locations and said he hopes the new restaurant will become a new neighborhood favorite for locals looking for a regular spot .

“This will be their neighborhood spot,” Strauss said. “This is a place you would return to. This is not a destination restaurant that you will visit every two months.

“This is a neighborhood restaurant. There is such a variety of food that people can eat here every day if they want. Just look at the menu. You will see that there is something for each meal that may be very different from your last meal.”

Strauss said each of Westville’s eight locations makes a point of being involved in their local communities by partnering with schools or arts organizations or donating food to local events. For example, the Williamsburg location in Westville regularly hosts a puppet show for younger members of the local community.

Strauss plans to repeat this social commitment at the new LIC location.

“When we have 100 of them one day, I hope we can maintain the feeling that they are neighborhood restaurants, and we really try to carry that feeling from one place to the next.”

Strauss said he “can’t wait” to open the new Long Island City location after Westville purchased the space about seven months ago. Once fully opened, the restaurant will seat up to 60 guests, and Strauss plans to introduce outdoor dining later in 2025 during warmer weather.

Dallas Mavericks bravely waive young wing for the second time in 10 days

Dallas Mavericks bravely waive young wing for the second time in 10 days

October 21st is the last official day for NBA teams to finalize their rosters before the start of the season.

Often times, teams will have their initial rosters finalized well before the October 21 deadline, but that may not be the case for many teams when it comes to two-way and veteran minimum roster deals.

In the case of the Dallas Mavericks, the team had its 18-man roster ready for the final preseason game of the year, but the emergence of one of their young guards made things murky for every player on a two-way roster spot.

It was announced this morning that forward AJ Lawson was waived, along with two other non-guaranteed players, Emanuel Miller and Jamarion Sharp.

Although it may seem harsh, at the end of the day the NBA is a business and some players face difficult situations. Fan-favorite forward Lawson, who signed a two-way contract with the Mavericks just last week after being released two days earlier, has been released again. However, this time it could be permanent.

Lawson spent the last two seasons with the Mavericks, becoming one of the league’s few success stories to make the final roster after spending one season on a two-way contract with the team. In addition to impressing at times, Lawson became a fan favorite during his tenure in Dallas as he always brought energy during his time on the floor.

Lawson’s defensive prowess and athleticism made him a candidate the Mavericks couldn’t give up on for nothing. After signing with the Mavs last season and joining the 15-man roster, many fans expected Lawson to make the jump to the fringe lineup. Not only was Lawson inefficient on the floor, but his minutes seemed to have halved over the course of the season.

While it’s cruel for a player like Lawson to be without him multiple times this summer, the Mavericks are making the right move. Since the Mavs began training camp in early October, guard Jazian Gortman has looked like a potential decision-maker, and ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported that he will be given the final two-way spot.

The Mavericks initially signed Gortman to a non-guaranteed contract, meaning the young guard could spend training camp with the team and showcase his skills against NBA-level talent.

Not only did Gortman shine in all four preseason games in which he appeared, but after just one appearance, fans were already clamoring for the team to sign the former OTE star.

As of Friday afternoon, it is unclear what Lawson’s future will hold.

Jake Cave, Dakota Hudson and Peter Lambert elect free agency

Jake Cave, Dakota Hudson and Peter Lambert elect free agency

This morning the Colorado Rockies announced that RHP Dakota Hudson, RHP Peter Lambert and OF Jake Cave have elected free agency:

The moves come as the Rockies begin preparations for the 2025 season.

Neither Hudson nor Lambert had notable seasons in 2024.

Hudson, who signed a one-year deal with the Rockies, had already been claimed off waivers once and spent a few games with the Albuquerque Isotopes before finishing his season with the Rockies and on the IL. (Read his “Ranking the Rockies” review here.)

Lambert spent part of the season in the Rocky Mountains, where he started the rotation, and part in the bullpen before ending up in Triple-A Albuquerque. (Read his “Ranking the Rockies” review here.)

Cave came to the Rockies via a spring training trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite being used as the fourth outfielder, Cave played more innings than originally planned. Ultimately, he had his best season since 2019; however, it remained below replacement level. (Read his “Ranking the Rockies” review here.)

In the short term, this answers the question of who the Rockies’ fourth outfielder will be. (Obviously, Sam Hilliard has an obvious advantage today.) How the Rockies will handle the presence of a veteran in the clubhouse remains uncertain, as Cave seemed well-suited to the role.

The next steps will come when the Rockies announce players who will be added to the 40-man roster, a decision that Skyler Timmins foreshadowed on Wednesday.
