MADISON, Wis. –

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films.

Joe Gow, who served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should retain a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission.

The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote.

Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning.

Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leadership became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites.

The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making and speaking publicly about pornographic films and for the questions it raises about free speech rights.

Gow argued that his videos and two e-books that he and his wife Carmen published about their experiences in adult films were protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract.

Zach Greenberg, an attorney with the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to academic freedom and the right to free expression.”

“FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputations,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.”

Republican lawmakers already view Wisconsin’s university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget.

Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said that because Gow had not taught in 20 years, he would be assigned general education courses, but she declined to allow him to return to teaching in any capacity.

Gow was criticized in 2018 for inviting porn actress Nina Hartley to speak on campus. She received $5,000 from tuition fees for her performance. The university said he came up with the idea of ​​bringing her to campus after filming a pornographic video with her.

Oldest daughters often face more pressure than other children, including eldest boys, according to a series of new studies.

Now, many first-time daughters are grappling with the implications of being the biggest sister, from their academic success to who they date. The term “eldest daughter syndrome” describes common feelings of pressure and perfectionism that eldest daughters face as adults.

Annie Wright, a therapist practicing in California, told Business Insider that while it’s not an official diagnosis, “eldest daughter syndrome” can be a useful description and is something she talks about with some of her clients .

It’s also something she can personally identify with: She grew up as the oldest of four siblings before two younger stepsisters joined the family when Wright was an adult.

“I can relate to almost everything 100%,” she said of the characteristics associated with eldest daughter syndrome. Overwhelm, self-confidence and difficulty setting boundaries are all things that she “internalized very, very early on”.

Although she attributes much of her professional success to her eldest daughter’s qualities, she said, “There are really some pros and cons when it comes to this set of personality traits that I have developed.”

She shared some of the most common issues that eldest daughters struggle with.

Being overly responsible in relationships

Wright said the predominant personality trait in the eldest daughters was “high responsibility and caring.”

Eldest daughters often rely on their younger siblings for help, although to varying degrees. Daughters who became parents, for example, might go beyond the occasional diaper change and be responsible for caregiving, organizing household tasks or even resolving family conflicts, Wright said.

“This early caregiving role really shapes their sense of identity and, frankly, contributes to them feeling overly responsible, both in the family and later in adult relationships,” she added.

A lot of self-inflicted pressure

Beyond caregiving, eldest daughters may feel “an implicit or explicit expectation for them to be a role model to siblings,” Wright said, leading them to develop perfectionism later in life.

This can lead to feeling pressure to “succeed academically, professionally and personally,” she said, especially if parents are also overly critical.

On the surface, it can seem like a great thing: Eldest-daughter syndrome is often associated with “Type A” personalities and fantastic organizational skills. Wright says her above-average achievements helped her become the first person in her family to attend college.

However, she said that striving for success often comes at a cost for eldest daughters and “can contribute to their stress, anxiety and fear of failure.”

I find it difficult to ask for help

Because eldest daughters are often praised for their independence, they can develop “a really strong predisposition toward self-reliance,” Wright said. If their caring skills are what make them the favorite child, they won’t want to give up that title by admitting they need help.

Reflecting on her own childhood, Wright remembers feeling like a “good big sister” and “such a helper” as she got diapers for her newborn sibling. She said this can lead to the eldest daughters internalizing the belief that they should handle everything on their own.

This can lead to resentment and a reluctance to be vulnerable. “The people who don’t look like they need help are often the ones who really need it,” Wright said.

People-friendly

While the eldest daughters find it difficult to express a need, they can also take on more responsibility from people who have no problem asking for help. They are often people pleasers who find it difficult to set boundaries.

In her practice, she often advises eldest daughters to start small and set boundaries. “I would invite people to ask themselves where they could step back from caring and allow others to take responsibility for themselves,” she said. “It’s okay to say, ‘I need some time to myself and I can’t help it.'”

Prone to burnout

Eldest daughters are particularly vulnerable to burnout, Wright said. Many of her eldest daughter’s clients realize that the same overachieving and lack of boundaries that helped them achieve professional success can lead to problems later.

In her own experience, Wright’s initial career success turned into challenges with workaholism. “The very things that may be adaptive early in life may prove maladaptive later in life,” she said.

Wright said that being diagnosed with cancer in 2022 “really made me re-evaluate the 80-hour work week.” She also felt like she was missing out on time with her daughter.

Wright began “rigorous therapy” regarding her appearance. “It wasn’t easy at all, nice work, but unfortunately it was a crisis that brought me to the point where I had to start dealing with it.”

On Thursday, Patrick Corbin pitched what could be his final game for the Washington Nationals and possibly his MLB career.

The 35-year-old left-hander lasted 5 1/3 innings against the playoff-bound Kansas City Royals, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. When manager Dave Martinez removed him from the game early in the sixth, Corbin may have walked off a major league mound for the last time.

Corbin received light applause from the approximately 14,000 fans in attendance. In return, he gave his cap to the crowd at Nationals Park and thanked them for their support and appreciation.

The two-time All-Star will be a free agent this winter, but the Nationals are unlikely to bring him back after half a decade of dismal performance. Given his age and terrible performance, it’s also hard to imagine another team signing him.

Regardless of whether he continues to play or retires, Corbin will be remembered as one of the worst free agent signings in MLB history.

In December 2018, Washington signed a six-year, $140 million contract instead of extending Bryce Harper, who signed a record deal with the Philadelphia Phillies three months later. Corbin was only 29 years old at the time and finished fifth in the NL Cy Young voting for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The move paid immediate dividends for the Nationals, who already had an excellent rotation with Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Anibal Sanchez. Corbin went 14-7 with a 3.25 ERA and helped Washington to its first World Series win in franchise history that fall against the Houston Astros.

However, things immediately went downhill for Corbin and the Nationals. Injuries, trades and free-agent departures decimated their championship core, leading to five straight losses and four last-place finishes.

Corbin was part of the problem and turned into a pumpkin once he turned 30. From 2020 to 2024, he went 33-70 with a 5.62 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and -2.2 WAR in 137 starts and led the National League in losses each year from 2021 to 2024.

Given Corbin’s contract and Washington’s lack of pitching depth, the team had no choice but to continue throwing him out despite the disastrous results. He couldn’t blame injuries either, as he only missed a handful of starts during his time with the Nationals.

Washington is finally free of Corbin and his $35 million in deferred salary. Hopefully the front office spends money more wisely this offseason.

The Internationals played inspired golf on Friday – after being defeated on Thursday – to come clean on Day 2 and level at 5 players.

THE RESULTS: USA 5, International 5.

THE SESSION: The Internationals won all five foursome games, only the second time in Presidents Cup history they have won a session.

THE STORY: This is the first time since the Presidents Cup began in 1994 that there have been two session sweeps on both sides.

THE BLOWOUT: Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im had a 7-6 win over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. In doing so, he tied the Presidents Cup record for largest margin of victory, which was last set in 2011 when Adam Scott and KJ Choi defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in the foursome.

THE STREAK: Matsuyama and Im had birdies on their final seven holes in alternating strokes.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Jason Day hit a tough pitch from a slightly downhill lie in a muddy patch of turf to within a foot for a conceded par that secured a 1-up win.

MATCH OF THE DAY: Si Woo Kim and Byeong Hun An vs. Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley. Thirteen of the 18 holes were halved. The Internationals won when Kim made a 15-foot par putt on the final hole.

MONTREAL (AP) — Tony Finau could sense a big change when he stepped onto the first tee at the Presidents Cup on Friday. The horseshoe-shaped stand was full and loud. The gallery was four deep in the first fairway. The mood was completely different.

The biggest difference was the scoreboards. They changed from red to gold.

All of them.

In a stunning turnaround at Royal Montreal, the Internationals flipped the script by winning the foursome session, a performance so lopsided that the Americans led in only one of the five games, and that for just one hole.

Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im set the record for the largest victory in the Presidents Cup. Jason Day secured the full point with a chip that was great even by his standards. Si Woo Kim capped off a perfect day with a 15-foot par putt.

Three of the games didn’t get past the 14th hole.

“Unbelievable,” said Adam Scott, who was playing in the Presidents Cup for the 11th time without ever winning one. “To come back after a hard day yesterday and show everyone what this team is made of is just incredible. … This team now knows what they are capable of.”

Tom Kim didn’t have a big role and played it anyway. The 22-year-old from South Korea said Thursday that the crowd was too quiet and he hoped Canadian fans would “help us a little more.”

They did, and scorecards filled with golden international clues weren’t even necessary. The noise throughout Royal Montreal made it clear what was happening. Inside the bonds, the Americans could do nothing about it.

“We definitely felt the energy from the start,” Finau said. “I hit the first tee shot in our group yesterday, and I hit the first tee shot today. It was a night and day difference, I think, just the noise and the energy.”

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, 3-0 in foursomes at the Presidents Cup, never had a chance against Matsuyama and Im. The Internationals had birdies on their final seven holes, a stunning streak considering they were alternating shots, resulting in a 7-6 win.

This tied the Presidents Cup record, which was last set in 2011 when Scott and KJ Choi defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in 12 holes. The Americans didn’t help matters by failing to reach a fairway until the eighth hole. On the other hand, Matsuyama and Im were at 8 under through 12 holes.

Right behind them, Scott and Taylor Pendrith made three birdies in a row. They never trailed, losing just one hole in a 5-4 win against Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa.

The Canadians also delivered. Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Conners won the first two holes in a 6-and-5 victory over Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau. They only lost one hole, and that was only after they had a lead of 6 after 11 holes.

“There was a lot of belief in the room and among the guys that we can still do this. We’re still a great team and we still have a lot of golf ahead of us,” Hughes said. “We came here this morning with our heads held high, our heads held high and ready to play.”

Two games went the distance and the Internationals were just as relentless.

Day and Christiaan Bezuidenhout were in 18th place ahead of Max Homa and Brian Harman. Day stood in front of a field of muddy grass that had been tamped down by spectators. Once one of the best chippers in golf, even he was impressed when he saw it expand to 30cm.

“The lie wasn’t that great. It was wet,” Day said. “So I just tried to understand the lie a little better through practice swings. Will it bounce? Will it dig? Just because it’s so wet.

“Halfway through the shot I held my hand up because I knew it was going to be a good shot.”

And then Si Woo Kim let out one final cheer. In a match where 13 holes were halved, Kim and Byeong Hun An were 1 ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley when An hit left into a thick, awkward lie in the rough and Kim hit the green couldn’t reach.

“It was a tough second shot, so I told him, ‘Just get me within 15 feet and I’ll do it.’ And I knew I had a chance to win,” Kim said.

There are two sessions on Saturday – four four-ball games, four four-a-side games – before Sunday’s 12 singles matches.

It’s almost like starting over, and now it becomes a sprint.

“I’m just so proud of the boys and really excited about them,” said International captain Mike Weir. “Playing so well yesterday and not having any points was disappointing. I couldn’t be happier to see how hard they work and how they persevere and that we captains and I ask them to persevere and believe.”

It was the sixth time a Presidents Cup session had been won and the first for the international team since a 6-0 four-over win in South Africa in 2003.

Weir produced three of his best foursome matches for Saturday morning’s Fourballs session; US captain Jim Furyk retained three of his fourballs partnerships from Thursday.

“I said yesterday, ‘Your back is against the wall.’ “They’re going to come out firing,” Furyk said. “Well, I’m sure my guys in the team room are a little upset right now. The idea is to come out and shoot tomorrow.”

Dear repeat: Whenever seemingly random events from the past enter my mind, I always think of the moment in a crime drama when a body floats to the surface of a swamp, only to be discovered years after the initial crime. Like the plot of a crime drama, these mysterious feelings always involve more questions than answers and are never really about what they initially seem to be about.

What your wife did wasn’t appropriate, but it doesn’t sound like this new obsession is about ethical violations. I don’t think it’s even about what happened in the past. If you have the resources, talking to a counselor or therapist about this fixation can help you get to the bottom of what you’re really stressed about. Dear Eric: About three years ago, a work friend “T” and I quickly became close. T profusely confessed her (platonic) love. I, an untrusting person who usually keeps others at a distance, thought I had found a new “best friend.”

But every now and then, and completely unexpectedly, T slips into “bad girl” mode.

She will make derogatory comments about my appearance, snap at me over seemingly trivial things, and act annoyed and angry during our encounter. In group situations, the irritation seems to focus on my behavior and not that of others.

We had an argument before, after which I ended the friendship. A year later we reconciled when she contacted us. But on a recent weekend trip together, their “bad girl” reared its ugly head. When I told her how it made me feel, she apologized and said it was because I wasn’t listening to her enough.

If T doesn’t respect your boundaries, your safest bet is to limit contact with her. I hope she can be the best friend you deserve, but for your own well-being, she may be best as an arm’s length friend.
