Violent crime at Southcenter mall still near record after shooting

Violent crime at Southcenter mall still near record after shooting

Following Friday’s shooting at Southcenter Mall, KOMO News uncovered numbers that suggest violent crime in the mall and surrounding area is still near a record high.

On Friday afternoon, several shoppers took cover as more than a dozen shots were fired in the parking lot immediately outside the Nordstrom store.

Tukwila police said based on their initial investigation, the incident appears to be a targeted act of violence between two parties. Officers added that both parties involved fled the scene immediately after the incident. They also noted that no injuries were reported.

Although there were few casualties, shoppers who witnessed the shooting told KOMO News they were outraged by the level of violence in broad daylight.

“It’s a public place where families and everyone comes out, so I don’t know why they would risk anyone’s life,” said shopper Sade Soliai.

Given that the shooting occurred in the middle of the day, KOMO News examined the magnitude of the violent crime problem in the mall and surrounding area.

Using the Tukwila Police Department’s crime mapping website, KOMO News uncovered numbers that suggest violent crime in the mall is still worse than in previous times, particularly when compared to pre-Covid years.

Data shows that year to date, from January 1, 2024 to September 28, 2024, there have been 30 violent crimes at the mall and within a half-mile radius of the mall property.

According to the figures, this is a slight decrease compared to 33 violent crimes in the same area in the corresponding period in 2023.

Nevertheless, KOMO News learned that the numbers for the current year 2024 are still higher than between 2019 and 2022.

During the same period of these years, there were 18 violent crimes in 2019, 15 cases in 2020, 27 cases in 2021 and 28 cases in 2022.

Several high-profile incidents have occurred at the mall over the past five years, including the November 2022 murder of a shopper in the Southcenter Mall parking lot. The murder occurred when a man and his wife interrupted three suspects who were trying to steal their car. Ultimately, all three suspects in this case pleaded guilty to murder.

A year earlier, in November 2021, a Rainier Beach High School graduate and her 18-year-old boyfriend were shot and killed at the mall the day before Thanksgiving. The 17-year-old victim later died in hospital and no suspects were ever arrested.

In January 2024, the body of a murdered taxi driver was found in the shopping center parking lot. Police said the victim was likely stabbed elsewhere and then dumped on mall property. An absent U.S. Army soldier was eventually arrested and charged with murder in the case.

Regarding Friday’s shooting, Tukwila police did not respond to KOMO’s requests for updates on the status of the investigation or the search for suspects in the case.

The urgent need for roof repairs

The urgent need for roof repairs

Schools in the Clinton system are facing a roofing need that administrators say is getting worse and more costly. Total repair costs are currently estimated at over $11 million.

That was the message John Lowe, executive director of technology and support services for Clinton City Schools, delivered to the Clinton City School Board last week.

Both the city and county school systems have had roofing issues for some time, and Lowe said the estimated cost for four of the five Clinton City schools for total roof repairs is about $11,299,600 supplied.

“Going back to the (state) Needs Based Capital Fund, that window opened Aug. 1 and the filing deadline was Sept. 13,” Lowe said. “We met that deadline and I filled out 14 different applications that Dr. (Linda) Brunson was able to sign together with our district representatives. These applications allocate over $6 million for roofing and I included approximately $2.5 million for HVAC needs.

“There is no guarantee that we will receive funding, but in 2021-22 I received almost $900,000, so we can hope for some support from the state in this area,” he continued prices change.”

The $11 million estimate accounts for every school in need, except the newer Clinton High. Among those numbers were cases, Lowe said, that he considered high priority based on their current condition.

“I needed those estimates to support the grant,” Lowe explained. “So you can see some of the updated numbers as well as places that are high priority for me right now. This is Building 300 at LC Kerr, where multiple leaks have occurred in four of the six classrooms. The next equally high priorities are Sampson Middle, both the academic wing and the gymnasium, and then there is the Sunset Avenue wall.

“That wall, I mean, I don’t sleep on it because we have that dividing brick facade,” Lowe confirmed. “If action is not taken, the brick facade above office wing 800 will eventually fall away, from the upper part to the lower part. We have to deal with it.”

The wall project alone, Lowe said, is estimated to cost about $280,000, money he noted is included in his capital expenditure plan. Although there are plans to make the repairs, Lowe said more help is needed.

“My capital expenditure plan for this school year is to bid and rehabilitate that wall, but we’re going to need some assistance from the Needs Base Public School Capital Funds or an infusion of some (money) from the County Commissioners Fund Balance will help us do that because it will be an expensive project,” emphasized Lowe.

The director also explained in detail how the contractors should repair the wall and when funds will be available for the project.

“The recommendation is to take the brick façade off, replace the windows and install vertical metal roof panels as we are getting water through the current brick façade,” he said. “We made every possible attempt to patch it; We replaced the edging on the bottom and coated the wall with a water repellent to try to contain the problem, but we are now at the point where we have no more paving.”

The Sunset wall isn’t the only place Lowe said she’s at her patch limit.

“We’re also running out of pavers for the 300 Hall at LC Kerr,” he said. “As you know, we keep going back up there and covering the shingles even more and now it looks like a patchwork quilt, but then new leaks keep popping up elsewhere. That’s why I’m sharing these estimates to show where we stand in terms of our roofing needs. This really helped me prepare our applications for the Needs Based Public Schools Capital Funds Grant.”

Regarding the scope of the total roofing needs, Lowe’s provided estimates detailing the estimated 2024 construction costs and the 2024 consulting fee, which were equal to the total cost of the project.

• Butler Avenue – (Building 300) construction $243,000, consulting $19,000; a total of $262,000

• LC Kerr – (gym wall) construction $27,000, consulting $4,000; total $31,000; (300 buildings) $148,500, $12,000; total $160,500; (Building 01.15-Kimbrough Road, end of 200 Hall) $196,500, $16,000; a total of $212,500.

• Sunset Avenue – (Elevation Wall) construction $259,000, consulting $21,000; total $280,000; (Triangular building on Kerr Street side) $636,000, $51,000; a total of $687,000; (Auditorium) $315,000, $25,000; a total of $340,000; (700 Hall at Finch Street) $423,000, $33,800; total $456,800; (Combined Auditorium and Finch Street Hall – not charged as a whole) $738,000, $58,800; a total of $796,800.

• Sampson Middle – (Total area of Sampson Middle – not calculated as a whole) Construction $3,720,000, Consulting $335,000; total $4,055,000; (Academic Wing) Construction $2,025,000, Consulting $162,000; a total of $2,187,000; (Gym Wing) $1,695,000, $136,000; totaling $1,831,000.

Based on these figures, the estimated total construction cost is $10,426,000 with consulting fees at $873,600 for a total cost of $11,299,600. While it is a steep hill to overcome, and while plans are underway to address the worst problems, he stressed that urgent help from other sources continues to be needed.

“There is some good news on LC Kerr, as I mentioned, such as our 2021-22 needs-based funds that I just filed this summer, our recent final reports, and my numbers are exactly the same as theirs. The offers were only slightly below our proposal, which was around $57,000.”

While these funds are only intended for the projects listed on their applications, such as new construction, Lowe said the possibility of using these grants for roof repairs at LC Kerr is an option.

“You (NC DPI) immediately said that we would not like to refund these funds, and I responded that I did not want to refund them either, but according to your information, they can only be used to the extent that was suggested in the grant application.” he said. “They said that’s true, but let me discuss this with my boss Dennis Hilton. Dennis then comes back to me and asks: Are there any other roofing projects at the locations that were included?

Lowe continued: “I said, yes, sir, there is; We have an urgent need at LC Kerr Elementary. It’s far more than what we have left, but would that be eligible?” What ultimately came out of it, and I got this in writing from the Office of School Planning, was that we were going to use the $57,000 that we were awarded for can use the LC Kerr project.

“This is helping us tremendously and I had already budgeted a certain amount for this product,” he added. “I hope the project goes through and receives a fair bid so I can shift the rest of my budget toward the wall at Sunset and both of these issues can be resolved with this capital outlay. That is my intention and then we will tackle the others as best we can, hopefully with the help of the district commissioners.”

The Mets jeopardized their playoff hopes by allowing just two goals in a 6-0 loss to the Brewers

The Mets jeopardized their playoff hopes by allowing just two goals in a 6-0 loss to the Brewers

MILWAUKEE (AP) Joey Ortiz drove in three runs for Milwaukee and the New York Mets scored just two as their playoff hopes suffered another setback with a 4-0 loss to the Brewers on Saturday night.

New York (87-72) lost its third straight game and fell one game behind Atlanta (88-71) in the NL wild-card race when the Braves beat Kansas City with a ninth-inning walk-off home run from the former Met defeated Travis d’Arnaud 2-1.

The Mets are competing for the NL’s final two wild-card spots with the Braves and Arizona (88-72), which hosted San Diego.

Both the Mets and Braves have an advantage over the Diamondbacks in the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Mets and Braves would play a doubleheader in Atlanta on Monday if their postseason fate was not resolved.

Ortiz gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead in the fourth by sending a bases-loaded single to left center on a full-count curveball from Jose Quintana (10-10).

Milwaukee opened the game in the eighth inning by scoring four runs against Reed Garrett, the first runs he allowed since August 18. The outburst included an RBI single by Willy Adames, a bases-loaded walk by Ortiz and a two-run single by Andruw Monasterio.

Quintana and four relievers combined for 18 hits, the Mets’ highest total this season. But New York was shut out for the first time since Aug. 23 and faced two or fewer hits for the fifth time this year.

Jose Iglesias singled in the first inning and Starling Marte hit a ground-rule double in the fifth inning. The only other time the Mets put a runner on base was when Iglesias drew a one-out walk in the ninth.

Quintana (10-10) came into the game with 22 2/3 consecutive shutout innings. He struck out nine while allowing two runs, five hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.

After Milwaukee’s Jared Koenig pitched a scoreless first inning, Tobias Myers (9-6) took over, striking out five while allowing one hit and no walks in four innings.

Joel Payamps, Aaron Ashby, Nick Mears and Devin Williams each pitched a hitless inning.

After the Brewers took the lead in the fourth, Marte led off the fifth with a double and advanced to the third when Luis Torrens retired. Marte got stuck at third after Myers retired Harrison Bader with a liner to third and Luisangel Acuña with a fly to right.

TRAINING ROOM

Mets: C Francisco Alvarez was not on the roster after back spasms caused him to leave Friday’s 8-4 loss for the Mets. He failed a pinch-hitting attempt in the eighth inning. … SS Francisco Lindor did not play in the field and was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts as DH, a day after returning from a sore lower back that sidelined him for nearly two weeks. “I just thought it wasn’t ideal to throw him after being on the field for 10, 11 days in a row,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

Brewers: Although an MRI revealed no structural damage, OF Sal Frelick injured his hip Friday when he hit the right field wall while trying to catch a foul ball. The NL Central champion Brewers expect to start the playoffs without Frelick, but aren’t ruling out a possible return at some point in the postseason.

MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, will host the 2025 Club World Cup final in July 2025, FIFA announced Saturday.

FIFA also announced the 11 additional stadiums that will be used for the 32-team tournament.

The Club World Cup, which begins on June 15, 2025, will feature games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Rose Bowl Stadium in Los Angeles, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Camping World Stadium and Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Lumen Field in Seattle and Audi Field in Washington D.C. leading up to the final on July 13, 2025.

Five of the stadiums – MetLife Stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, Lumen Field, Hard Rock Stadium – will also host games during the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 2025 Club World Cup will feature a new 32-team format, with twelve teams from Europe, six from South America, four from Asia, four from Africa, four from North and Central America and the Caribbean, one from Oceania and one others will compete from teams from the host country, the USA

Two other teams – one from the USA and one from South America – still have to qualify.

Eight groups of four will be drawn, with each team playing three games in the group stage. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.

The draw takes place in December.

The timing of the 2025 Club World Cup has sparked criticism. International players’ union FIFPRO said in December that the event “will undercut the rest and recovery period of these players at the end of the 2024-25 season.” FIFA’s decision “shows a lack of consideration for the mental and physical health of the participating players and a disregard for their private and family lives.”

Europe: Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, Real Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg

South America: Boca Juniors, Flamengo, Fluminense, Palmeiras, River Plate

North and Central America and the Caribbean: León, Monterrey, Pachuca, Seattle Sounders

Africa: Al Ahly, Esperance, Mamelodi Sundowns, Waydad

Asia: Al-Hilal, Al Ain, Ulsan, Urawa

Sit ‘Em for Week 4 Fantasy Football: Who Should I Start With Instead? (2024)

Sit ‘Em for Week 4 Fantasy Football: Who Should I Start With Instead? (2024)

Week 4 of the fantasy football season is underway, and while we’ve drafted certain players at a high price, it’s okay to consider benching them despite their name value. We often hear the phrase “start your stallions” and it is a tried and true method, especially early in the season. However, we must adapt as new information, injuries, difficult matchups and/or questionable team situations arise. In this issue I’ll be covering Jordan Love, Javonte Williams and Michael Pittman Jr.

The fantasy football season has been brutal so far with injuries and disappointing cleats. There are better days ahead, but for now, precautions are needed until busts like Javonte Williams and Michael Pittman Jr. show signs of life.

Here’s a look at some fantasy football players who have shown red flags recently and you should think twice about adding them to your lineup in Week 4. If you have any issues or concerns, contact @RotoSurgeon at X.

Be sure to check out all of our 2024 fantasy football rankings:

Quarterback Concerns – Sit ‘Em for Week 4?

Jordan Love – Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings

Jordan Love is back as QB1 for the Packers after suffering a knee injury in Week 1. Malik Willis has performed admirably in his absence, but the former first-round pick is ready to play again. While Love has been training since last week, we shouldn’t rely entirely on his knee and mobility in his first game back. Love will reportedly carry a double-header, which will likely limit his fantasy potential as his rushing upside will be limited.

Additionally, Minnesota’s defense ranks first in total defensive DVOA for three weeks (via FTN). They are first against the run and second against the pass. The Vikings aren’t at full strength on defense, but that’s mitigated by a smart DC like Brian Flores. Love has the advantage of healthy weapons and protection, but in all likelihood you won’t ask too much of her in this game.

Who should you start instead?

Justin Fields – Pittsburgh Steelers at Indianapolis Colts

Justin Fields doesn’t score like Chicago’s Justin Fields, but that’s because he plays an efficient, game-controlling style of football. Fields is currently tied with Bo Nix as QB20 in fantasy football, but that should change in Week 4. Pittsburgh hasn’t forced Fields to come loose often, but that could change this weekend against the Colts in Indianapolis as Anthony Richardson is a formidable opponent.

The Colts are 16th in defensive DVOA so far and will be without star DT DeForest Buckner. Meanwhile, the Steelers will play RB Jaylen Warren, which could emphasize the performance of Justin Fields.

Running Back Concerns – Sit ‘Em for Week 4?

Javonte Williams – Denver Broncos at New York Jets

Javonte Williams remains the Denver Broncos’ starter as he has played no less than 51% of the snaps so far but is averaging 2.2 yards per carry on 24 attempts. The Broncos are not committed to him beyond this season and will need results sooner rather than later given the younger RBs on their depth chart, like Jalel, who could deserve more work.

The Jets’ defense hasn’t been elite through three games, but they still have enough talent to figure it out. Denver surprised the weakened Buccaneers team last week, but it’s unlikely they’ll have similar success in New York.

Who should you start instead?

Chuba Hubbard – Carolina Panthers vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The Carolina Panthers offense looks competent with Andy Dalton at center. This is important not only for the pass catchers, but also for Chuba Hubbard and the backfield. Hubbard leads the RB room on a weekly basis and totaled 26 touches in the last game against Las Vegas. Carolina’s offensive line is better than its 2023 version and is evident in Hubbard’s career-high 5.2 average.

Cincinnati’s defense has lost key interior pieces on its line and ranks 24th overall and 17th against the rush. If Andy Dalton plays half as well as he did last week, Hubbard should be in for another big game.

Wide Receiver Concerns – Sit ‘Em for Week 4?

Michael Pittman Jr. – Indianapolis Colts vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Michael Pittman Jr. has rushed for 88 yards on 20 targets in three weeks. He’s a much better receiver than this production suggests, but Anthony Richardson’s growing pains this season will wear on him until their chemistry – and Richardson’s accuracy – corrects.

The Colts face a strong Steelers defense this week that ranks fifth against the pass. Indianapolis has had plenty of ground success thanks to the talents of Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line, but several OL players are injured this week. It makes sense to bench Pittman Jr. with Josh Downs back, Alec Pierce performing and Richardson struggling.

Who should you start instead?

Jakobi Meyers – Las Vegas Raiders vs. Cleveland Browns

Davante Adams is out this week with a hamstring injury, making Jakobi Meyers a good starting option across all formats. Meyers is a talented receiver, but his presence on offense is overshadowed by elite talents like Adams and Brock Bowers. If the Raiders had a better QB than Gardner Minshew, Meyers could produce regardless of the players around him. However, offenses with limited quarterback play tend to consolidate.

The Browns defense is talented, but Myles Garrett is banged up and they were average early in the season. Meyers had 9 targets last week against the Panthers and has seen an increase on a weekly basis. Unless the Raiders’ rushing attack miraculously revives, Meyers will be a crucial part of the game plan.

Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, NC devastated by flooding. See photos and video

Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, NC devastated by flooding. See photos and video

Chimney Rock and Lake Lure in western North Carolina appear to have been devastated by flooding after Hurricane Helene swept through the area. 2022 census data shows 220 people living in Chimney Rock, with about 1,300 living in Lake Lure.

Air rescue operations continued in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village on Saturday afternoon as family members desperately searched for details on their loved one’s whereabouts while phone lines were down and internet access was limited.

Rutherford County Emergency Management said crews rescued more than 100 people in the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area Saturday and rescue efforts would continue into Saturday night.

Rutherford County Emergency Management provided air rescue resources to transport stranded individuals from the area. After evacuation, people will be transported to RS Central High School where they will receive further assistance.

“Please note that mobile and telephone communications in the region are currently extremely limited. We understand the concern and uncertainty this may cause and respectfully ask for your patience as these rescue efforts will take time,” officials said. “Once we receive the names of those rescued, we will make every effort to reach families and individuals who have inquired about their loved ones. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated during this challenging time.”

He then flew to Alabama to watch the action between the top two SEC programs.

When Trump arrived, dozens of fans were in the concourse of Bryant-Denny Stadium to greet him.

Trump tossed merchandise to fans and many of them chanted “USA” as he entered the stadium.

Trump also received an ovation when he was shown on the Jumbotron.

Last year he attended a game between Iowa and Iowa State and another between Clemson and South Carolina. He also took part in a game at Alabama in 2019.

Bryant-Denny Stadium holds over 100,000 people.

But Rowe said his teams “know what they need to do to create a safe environment for our protectees.”

Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly arranged for a Trump troll banner to be displayed during the game.

As The Washington Post reported Saturday, a plane with a message reading “Trump’s Punting in Second Debate” is expected to fly over the stadium during the primetime game.

Alabama beat Georgia 27-24 in the SEC title game last season. That gave the Crimson Tide the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff and eliminated Georgia, which had been the No. 1 seed and had won 42 of its previous 43 games. History appeared to be repeating itself after Alabama took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

D’Arnaud hits a walk-off home run in the ninth as the Braves continue their playoff push with a win over the Royals

D’Arnaud hits a walk-off home run in the ninth as the Braves continue their playoff push with a win over the Royals

ATLANTA (AP) — Travis d’Arnaud hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning and the Atlanta Braves continued their postseason push with a 2-1 victory over the playoff-bound Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Reynaldo López came off the injured list and pitched six strong innings for the Braves, who edged a game ahead of the New York Mets and a half-game ahead of Arizona to clinch the final two wild-card spots in the National League. The Mets lost 6-0 in Milwaukee and the Diamondbacks hosted San Diego.

D’Arnaud ended the game with a hit in the ninth, blasting a 2-0 throw from Sam Long (3-3) over the centerfield wall for his 15th home run of the season.

Raisel Iglesias (6:2) secured the victory.

López threw a pitch for the first time since September 10, when he lasted just one inning in Washington before exiting with shoulder soreness. An MRI showed no structural damage, but the Braves placed him on the 15-day disabled list in the heat of the playoff race to ensure things didn’t get worse.

López looked as good as ever in his comeback, allowing just two singles while striking out nine. After blasting Adam Frazier with the last of his 73 pitches, he happily batted the glove as he left the mound, having lowered his ERA to just 2.00 in a stunning season.

Kansas City took the lead in the third after coming into the game with just two hits off Lopez – back-to-back singles by Freddy Fermin and Garrett Hampson. Fermin finished third when Dairon Blanco scored a double.

The Braves tied the score in the fourth with an unearned run.

With two outs, Jorge Soler hit one from the yellow line at the top of the wall in right-center for a double. D’Arnaud followed with a dribbler that was tied up by pitcher Michael Lorenzon, who had plenty of time to catch the slow-moving catcher but threw it into the Braves dugout. Soler made the mistake clear.

The Royals entered with a makeshift lineup a day after their first postseason appearance since 2015.

Bobby Witt Jr. was among six starters from Friday’s 3-0 loss who had the night off, while three others were used at other positions. For Witt, it was the first game he missed all season after making 160 consecutive starts – 159 as a shortstop and one game as a designated hitter.

Sitting out had an added benefit for the Royals star, who likely secured the AL batting title with a .332 average with just one game left in the regular season.

16-game winner Seth Lugo pitched two scoreless innings for Kansas City, limited to 36 pitches, in what was essentially preparation for the Wild Card Series that begins Tuesday.

TRAINING ROOM

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino (broken right thumb) hopes to return to the lineup during the playoffs. He took another step in his recovery by facing live pitching for the first time since his injury. Before the game. He hit against LH Will Smith, who is recovering from lower back spasms, and RH Steven Cruz, who was optioned to the minors.

Braves: With López coming off the injured list, RHP John Brebbia was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett – merely a procedural move since the minor league team’s season is over.

NEXT

Neither team had announced pitching plans for Sunday’s series finale. The Braves are holding off star player Chris Sale for as long as possible and perhaps looking forward to Monday’s makeup doubleheader against the Mets. The Royals, meanwhile, scrapped plans to use LHP Cole Ragans, preferring to keep him for the Wild Card Series.

British Columbia nurse suspended for 10 days for allowing patient to direct treatment: College

A B.C. nurse has been reprimanded and given a 10-day suspension for “practice issues” dating back to January 2023, according to the professional regulator.

Margaret Ellis, a registered nurse in Hornby Island, B.C., entered into a consent agreement with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives earlier this week, and a summary of that agreement was posted online the same day.

The public notice states that in January 2023, Ellis “exercised skills that were outside the scope of practice of a registered nurse” and allowed “procedures and treatments to be directed by a patient.”

The college says she also didn’t follow on-call counseling procedures and didn’t accurately document the “encounter with the client.”

“The investigative committee is satisfied that the conditions protect the public,” the statement said.
