Why fans can never turn their backs on the thrill of sport

Why fans can never turn their backs on the thrill of sport

We explore this topic a bit in the WhackBack section elsewhere on this site: just how fanatical fans can really be, especially on the line between great success and poor failure. In 35 years as a professional sports journalist (and 51 years as a sports fan), I’ve never been able to fully solve this question.

But I’m trying. I keep trying.

I’m sure we all laugh at Jerry Seinfeld’s old saying that exercise is all about getting laundry. However, if you’ve ever seen Jerry live and die at Citi Field with his favorite baseball team, you know that he doesn’t mean it in the slightest, even if he happens to have a penchant for orange and blue.

The fact is, we all have our origin story as sports fans. We all experience that moment that separates the before from the after – the “before” is the final blissful moment when you don’t care who wins or loses, who wins the MVP, who should be the manager, who should be the manager should captain, how quickly should the coach be fired…

And the “after,” when all of these things are the most meaningful things in the world to us. This usually happens at an early and innocent age, so none of these new pressures get in the way of something more important than dedicating more hours of free time to sports than to video games.

Mets fans cheer as Edwin Diaz ends the game with a win over the Phillies. Robert Sabo for NY Post

I’m sure you know a story like this: My father was sick from work and yet felt strong enough to meet me at the bus stop on the afternoon of October 10, 1973 so he could tell me that the Mets had just beaten the Reds for the National League pennant.

I had no idea what a “pennant” was in this context – I knew they were things that looked like flags that my father had hung on the walls with the hopeful intention of letting osmosis work its magic and draw me in to transform a sports fan. But why should I care if the Mets had won one?

It made my father very happy, so there was that. I came home and saw the ball players celebrating, so there was that. And suddenly, at that moment, I had a thousand questions for my father. Years later he joked that he was the first man I ever interrogated Wallace-style, when I was just six years old.

But whatever he said to me, I was hooked. I mean: locked up and locked up. From that moment until 18 seconds ago when I wrote this story, sports were a part of me. Daily. Hourly. I can also say that it’s my job and I have to feel that way, but people who know me know otherwise. If I were a sushi chef, a landscaper, or a lawyer, I would feel the same way about exercise. I would just do it.

When sport grabs you, it captivates you.

Ball games are a little more important than they should be. We joked with a few Giants fans and also a Yankees fan at the WhackBacks. But Mets fans know what we’re talking about, especially this weekend. Jets fans know you better believe that because they’re waiting for the marathon bridge from last Thursday’s Patriots game to Sunday’s Broncos game. Knicks fans? Rangers fans? It’s been a deadly wait since last spring, when the playoffs ended about a round earlier than either wanted or expected.

And they will come back.

Because that’s what we do. We’re coming back. We keep coming back. We complain and we snap, we write angry statements and let the radio hosts have their way. Those in our lives who don’t see sport the way we do sometimes shake their heads in confusion – see Hursey-Vaccaro, Leigh – and they tolerate us because they know it’s important to us, even if it’s no less important could be to them.

We laugh at these attention-hungry people who sometimes “sell” their fandoms. If you know it, you know it. If you’re a sports fan, you may swear off a team on the last day of September and maybe even temporarily lose interest. But something will catch your attention. Something will bring you back.

Maybe it would be easier if we could actually turn off the tap for good. Some actually do. But most of us, even in the worst of times, live forever by the Michael Corleone Theorem.

Just when we think we’re outside…

They’re pulling me back in.

I am forever grateful that they do.

Vac’s Whacks

The train is idling in the MetLife parking lot. A Jets win on Sunday against the Broncos will make the pitch a little tricky over the next two weeks.

Dwight Gooden has gone back to college — to the University of Maryland to watch his son Dylan, a redshirt freshman linebacker for the Terrapins. “College football is great,” Doc said. “I love the atmosphere. I sign a few autographs and take a few photos. Most of the time I’m just a regular fan watching my son.”

The idea that baseball stadiums aren’t required to have a roof as part of the bidding process seems sillier every year.

Hit back at Vac

Marc Aaronin: Maybe the reason the Giants have lost so much over the last 13 years is because we spend too much time blaming the officials and not enough time blaming the actual team. Put on a healthy kicker. Catch a clutch ball in the fourth quarter. Keep going. When you’re a bad team, you don’t do these things, and since 2012, the Giants have been just that – a bad team.

Vac: Tell me if there is even a single syllable of it that can be argued about.

Kevin Bryant: The Giants had the wrong number 26 in the backfield. They need the one they let go.

Vac: It’s also hard to argue with that.

Saquon Barkley AP

@MikeCordaro1: The problem with the Yankees is that we’ve read this script too many times over the last 15 years. I was talking to a Yankee fan on the golf course today and he said, “Yeah, but,” when I reminded him that we could get the win that night.

@MikeVacc: Sigh. Wasn’t everyone happy here about 10 minutes ago?

Michael Lynch: Mike, hats off to Shohei Ohtani in the 50/50 club, but if someone had mentioned to Willie Mays that people matter, Shohei would have been the second member of that club. I’m just saying it.

Vac: And perhaps thirdly, if The Mick had been so inclined in his youth.

A question for Eric: The 80-year-old husband suddenly becomes obsessed with his wife’s long-ago sexual history

A question for Eric: The 80-year-old husband suddenly becomes obsessed with his wife’s long-ago sexual history

Dear Eric: I am 80 years old and have been married to the best woman possible for 33 years. We connect and are soulmates.

My question is: Why have I been jealous lately of her affair with a 17 year old high school student even though she was 27 and a teacher? This was mentioned a long time ago in our past relationship report.

Why has this reactive jealousy consumed me now? I want to know a lot of details about this encounter, but I realize that this will only delve me deeper into my obsession.

My constant rumination is putting a strain on my side of our marriage. What can I do?

– Past repeat

Dear Repeat: Whenever seemingly random events from the past enter my mind, I always think of the moment in a crime drama when a body floats to the surface of a swamp, only to be discovered years after the first crime. Like the plot of a crime drama, these mysterious feelings always involve more questions than answers and are never really about what they initially seem to be about.

What your wife did wasn’t appropriate, but it doesn’t sound like this new obsession is about ethical violations. I don’t think it’s even about what happened in the past. If you have the resources, talking to a counselor or therapist about this fixation can help you get to the bottom of what you’re really stressed about. Maybe something is changing in your marriage, maybe you’re worried about yourself or your body. These things are normal and it is possible to change the way you think about them so that the movies stop playing in your head. Your local aging department may also be able to point you to free or low-cost counseling options for seniors

It’s also important to draw a clear line between what’s going on in your head and what’s going on in your marriage. Tell your wife that you can’t stop fixating on this event and also what you plan to do to remedy it. Don’t make your obsession their problem, but if there’s something in your marriage that needs to be addressed, disclosing what else is going on in your head will pave the way for a healthier discussion.

A leak in the International Space Station is getting worse – and keeping NASA awake at night

A leak in the International Space Station is getting worse – and keeping NASA awake at night

U.S. space officials don’t like to talk about the dangers of flying astronauts on the aging International Space Station, parts of which are now more than a quarter century old.

But a new report confirms that NASA managers responsible for space station operations are seriously concerned that a small Russian portion of the station, essentially a tunnel connecting a larger module to a docking port, is leaking.

Russian and US officials know that this small PrK module, located between an airlock on the Progress spacecraft and the Zvezda Module has been leaking since September 2019. A new report released Thursday by NASA’s inspector general contains details the space agency had not previously released, underscoring the severity of the problem.

New details about the leak

For example, in February of this year, NASA noted an increase in the leak rate from less than 1 pound of atmosphere per day to 2.4 pounds per day, and in April this rate increased to 3.7 pounds per day. Despite years of investigation, neither Russian nor US officials have identified the underlying cause of the leak.

“Although the root cause of the leak remains unknown, both agencies have limited their focus to internal and external welds,” said the report, signed by Deputy Inspector General George A. Scott.

The plan to mitigate the risk is to leave the hatch on Zvezda PrK tunnel module closed. If the leak continues to worsen, this hatch may need to be closed permanently, reducing the number of Russian docking ports on the space station from four to three.

Publicly, NASA has tried to minimize concern about the crack problem, as to date it has been limited to the PrK tunnel and has not spread to other parts of the station. Still, Ars reported in June that the cracking problem had reached the highest level of concern in the space agency’s 5×5 “risk matrix” for classifying the likelihood and consequences of risks to space activities. The Russian leaks are now rated “5” for both high probability and high impact.

At this time, NASA would not comment or confirm the space agency’s concerns about the risk matrix assessment. However, the new report confirms the agency’s concerns.

“In May and June 2024, representatives from the ISS program and Roscosmos met to discuss increasing concerns about the increased leak rate,” the inspector general’s report said. “The ISS program subsequently raised the leak risk in the service module transfer tunnel to the highest risk level in its risk management system. According to NASA, Roscosmos is confident that they will be able to monitor and close the hatch to the service module before the leak. “The leak rate is reaching unsustainable levels. However, NASA and Roscosmos have not reached agreement on the point at which the leak rate becomes unsustainable.

An uncertain future in low Earth orbit

The report comes as NASA considers the future of the space station. The US space agency and Russia have an agreement to continue operating the station until 2028, and NASA would like to extend operations until 2030. NASA had already expected to agree to this extension more than a year ago, but has not yet finalized an agreement.

Once the station reaches the end of its life, NASA intends to shift its low-Earth orbit activities to private space stations and has funded initial development work by Axiom Space, Northrop Grumman, Blue Origin and Voyager Space. Northrop has since withdrawn from competition, concluding that it will not be a profitable company. There is general uncertainty about whether any of the private space station operators will be ready in 2030.

NASA’s other possible option is to extend the space station’s lifespan beyond 2030. However, this would require a lot of work to ensure that the space station structure remains viable, and yet another extension agreement with Russia. The US partnership with this country has been severely strained by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“An expansion of the ISS beyond 2030 requires significant funding for station operations and maintenance, acceptance of the increased risk posed by its components and aging structures, and assurances of continued support from NASA’s international partners,” says the new report. “To make matters worse, NASA may continue to face a flat or reduced budget, inflation and supply chain challenges.”

Sam LaPorta Injury Update: The Lions expect TE to play on “Monday Night Football” against the Seahawks.

Sam LaPorta Injury Update: The Lions expect TE to play on “Monday Night Football” against the Seahawks.

getty-sam-laporta-lions.jpg

After looking “really good” in practice on Friday, Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is expected to play in Monday night’s showdown between Detroit and the Seattle Seahawks. LaPorta is dealing with an ankle injury suffered in last Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

LaPorta did not practice on Thursday but was a full participant in Friday’s practice.

“That was good to see,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said of LaPorta’s participation on Friday. “So he recovered quickly and healed well. So no, he’s fine.”

Headshot of the player

LaPorta’s quick recovery is obviously good news for the Lions, who are trying to keep up with NFC North opponents Packers and Vikings in arguably the NFL’s toughest division. The good news for Detroit is that either the Packers or Vikings will lose this weekend as the two teams play each other.

A 2023 second-round pick, LaPorta has quickly become one of the NFL’s best players at his position. He was a Pro Bowler last year after catching 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. However, LaPorta’s numbers haven’t been that impressive so far this year. In Detroit’s first three games, he only had eight balls on ten goals.

Monday night’s game should be a hard-fought game between two teams that have legitimate playoff aspirations. The Lions are off to a 2-1 start, while the Seahawks are 3-0 and feature top-10 units on both offense and defense.

The crime thriller “Deathtrap” has more to offer gays than just an attractive Christopher Reeve

The crime thriller “Deathtrap” has more to offer gays than just an attractive Christopher Reeve

Image source: “Deathtrap,” Warner Bros. Pictures

Welcome back to our queer film retrospective “A Gay Old Time.” In this week’s column, we take another look at the 1982 crime thriller Death trapin which above all a, well… *Spoiler alert*

Crime and mystery novels tend to have a particularly queer appeal. The worlds of Agatha Christie, Jessica Fletcher or Benoit Blanc are always full of larger-than-life characters hiding secrets from each other, exotic far-flung places, fabulous women in outlandish clothes and drama hiding in every corner.

The genre revels in the archetypes and narratives we are drawn to, either because of its camp feel and heightened reality, or because themes such as hiding one’s true identity and finding meaning in a chaotic world are reflections of our own experiences.

The canon of crime stories in film is broad and extensive, and while they always manage to find a queer audience, open queer representation in them is surprisingly quite low. Films like 1975 The last of Sheila1976s Murder by death (which we have already covered in this column) and more recently the Knife out There were queer characters in films of varying degrees of prominence. However, it was rare for a character’s queerness to serve as a central plot point or motivation in the story.

This week to celebrate the recent release of the biographical documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeves StoryLet’s take a look at a crime film that made a cultural statement by adding a queer layer to its source material, exposing the themes that otherwise simmered quietly beneath.

The structure

The 1982 film Death trap The film stars Michael Caine as Sidney Bruhl, a once-famous thriller playwright who now faces critical and financial decline in his career. Stuck in a creative rut after the failure of his latest play, Sidney is surprised to receive a manuscript one night from a former student, Clifford Anderson (Christopher Reeve).

The play proves to be one of the most brilliant works he has ever read, and his very supportive wife Myra (a spirited Dyan Cannon) persuades him to invite the young writer to discuss collaboration. But Sidney has other plans: he intends to murder Clifford and secure credit for the play in order to revive his own career.

*From now on, this article will be quite spoiler-heavy. So if you haven’t seen it yet Death trap and enjoy the film’s many twists and turns, do so and come back!*

After a cat-and-mouse chase throughout the evening, Sidney successfully murders Clifford. But to his wife’s great surprise, he comes back to life in the middle of the night and tries to take revenge. This is too much for Myra’s poor heart and she dies of a heart attack. But then Sidney and Clifford look at each other and smile: their plan worked. They successfully killed his wife and can now enjoy their fortune together. And they share a kiss.

The rest of the film follows the distrust that the two men develop towards each other as Clifford attempts to write a play based on the crime committed by the two (it is a film full of complex narrative themes and techniques).

Making the crime thriller queer in the truest sense of the word

Image source: “Deathtrap,” Warner Bros. Pictures

It’s a very cleverly plotted, fast-paced and gripping meta-crime with three funny performances at its center. Cannon stands out as the unsuspecting victim, with Reeve effectively weaponizing his boyish charm and Michael Caine comfortably falling into an archetype he’s done before (the film has many similarities to 1972). detectivewhere he played alongside Laurence Olivier).

Death trap The film is directed by Sidney Lumet, returning to the genre after directing the star-studded 1975 film Murder on the Orient Expressand effectively translates the “stageiness” of the source material into a dynamic and claustrophobic cinematic experience.

The film is based on Ira Levin’s 1978 play of the same name, which at the time had the honor of being the longest-running comedy-thriller on Broadway. Although the play suggests that there is a romantic and sexual relationship between the two leads, the film made this clear by including the kissing scene, which caused great controversy at the time. The film was booed by audiences in previews, and since the discourse it generated apparently revealed a major twist in the film’s plot, the studio assumed it would have cost millions of dollars in ticket sales.

A crime of passion

Image source: “Deathtrap,” Warner Bros. Pictures

However, the kiss, and therefore the romantic nature of the central relationship, is a key element of the story and what sets it apart from other entries in the genre. Unlike other films where a character’s sexuality can be used as information against them (see The last of Sheila or just a touch of personality and backstory that never comes into play, the attraction and bond between Sidney and Clifford is what sets the entire plot in motion.

They kill because they want to be together, and the tension that grows between them after the murder is heightened by their feelings for each other. The professional jealousy at the core of the theme makes more sense and is felt more strongly between two lovers than if they were just colleagues.

Interestingly, and rather disappointingly, there have been attempts at revivals of the play that have unsuccessfully attempted to deepen this romantic relationship even further. In 2012, a Los Angeles LGBT Center production staged the post-murder conversations as a post-coital nude scene and had to cancel performances when the production was canceled by Ira Levin’s estate. But it’s not as if this creates a dynamic that isn’t already present in the text.

A twist of fate

Image source: “Deathtrap,” Warner Bros. Pictures

Death trap is a worthy entry into the canon of both crime adaptations and queer films. Although it is significantly longer than it needs to be, and its stage origins are sometimes too obvious, it is full of surprises, twists and gore to both embarrass and captivate the reader.

The fact that it centers on a queer couple feels both groundbreaking and surprisingly familiar; It’s a genre we’ve felt at home with for so long that it feels somewhat natural to see ourselves portrayed openly.

Deathtrap is currently streaming on Hoopla, Plex and Tubi. It can be rented digitally or purchased via Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

See damage in Asheville; other areas

Hurricane Helene has left its mark on North Carolina and many residents are trying to make sense of the devastation it left in its wake.

Helene brought heavy rains, strong winds, damaging debris and flooding to the state. Power outages and life-threatening flash floods were reported in the western part of the state.

In many areas of North Carolina, such as Chimney Rock and Asheville, residents experienced heavy rain. The highest rainfall reported was 29.5 inches in Busick Raws, Yancey County, North Carolina, Gov. Roy Cooper’s office said.

The heavy rains prompted Rutherford County Emergency Management to issue an immediate evacuation notice to residents near Lake Lure Dam on Friday morning.

On Friday evening, the county government office provided an update on the dam’s water level.

“The water level in Lake Lure has stopped rising and is beginning to decline,” the county government office wrote in a Facebook post. “Emergency personnel rescued over 25 people through rapid water rescue, EMS, fire and law enforcement.”

Emergency personnel provided an update around 9:00 p.m. local time that the storm had knocked out many phone lines across the county, particularly in Lake Lure.

Pittsburgh Steelers DST – Fantasy Football Outlook

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been strong defensively this season, giving up the fewest yards and points per contest in the NFL. They are primed for more success at home against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4.

Although the Indianapolis offense has put up a respectable number of points over the last three weeks, Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson currently leads the league in interceptions thrown. If running back Jonathan Taylor struggles against a Steelers defense that allows the second-fewest rushing yards per game,

Richardson could be forced to throw the ball as he deals with intense pressure from DPOY favorite TJ Watt. Fantasy managers should include Pittsburgh’s DST in lineups of all shapes and sizes on Sunday.

-Jorden Hill, RotoBaller

New York Jets DST – Fantasy Football Outlook

The New York Jets defense pulled off a great draw at home against the Denver Broncos in Week 4. The Broncos have struggled offensively this season, ranking 23rd in points per game and 26th in yards per game through three weeks.

The Jets have one of the most talented defenses in the league and are in a great situation at home against rookie quarterback Bo Nix. With New York considered a 7.5-point home favorite in a game with a low over/under ratio of 39.5, fantasy gamers should be confident heading into Week 4 with the Jets defense.

– Matt T., RotoBaller

Cleveland Browns DST – Fantasy Football Outlook

The Cleveland Browns defense will hit the road to face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4. Cleveland’s defense was solid through three games, recording nine sacks, good for tenth in the league.

The Raiders will call on Gardner Minshew II at center after benching him for Aiden O’Connell last week, but Minshew is on a leash after throwing just three touchdowns and three interceptions in the first three games of the season Thrown and didn’t score a vote of confidence from head coach Antonio Pierce during the week.

However, the Browns’ defense enters Week 4 pretty banged up, as Myles Garrett (foot, hamstring, hamstring), Jordan Hicks (ribs, elbow) and Mike Ford (knee) all missed a few practices this week due to their respective injuries. The Browns are 1.5-point away favorites in a game with a low over/under of 36.5 points, so fantasy managers can feel confident starting the unit as a top-10 option this weekend.
