The GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition features a dual-slot design, which is impressive for a 600W GPU

The GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition features a dual-slot design, which is impressive for a 600W GPU

For those excited to learn more about the next generation of GeForce RTX 50 series cards, it’s been a wild week of leaks from trusted insiders and sources. NVIDIA leaker @kopeite7kimi on

The GeForce RTX 5090 Founder Edition will feature a dual-slot cooler and construction.

VIEW GALLERY – 2 PICTURES

With rumors suggesting that these new flagship GPU specs will be “locked in” sometime in September 2024, the likelihood that this information is true is high. As previously reported, the GeForce RTX 5090 will be an absolute beast – 21,760 CUDA cores, 32GB of GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit bus, and a confirmed power consumption or power rating of 600W.

The Blackwell flagship is also equipped with the GB202-300-A1 chip. The GB203-400-A1 GeForce RTX 5080, on the other hand, will be a little more down-to-earth, with 10,752 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus and a power rating of 400W.

Since the flagship RTX 5090 consumes 600W, there has been a lot of speculation about how it will be cooled and how a single 12V 2×6 power cable would work when it reaches 600W. Rumor has it that OC models require two 12V 2×6 power cables and new power supplies with two 12V 2×6 connectors. The GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition is expected to feature a single 12V 2×6 port and a compact dual-slot cooler.

Okay, that last detail may sound far-fetched, especially when flagship GPUs have gotten larger over the years because more power means more heat. But this is something @kopeite7kimi has been talking about for a while: a complete redesign of the GeForce RTX 50 series coolers, at least from NVIDIA’s perspective. This means that the GeForce RTX 5090 will be a dual-slot GPU. When asked about the cooler design after releasing the specs and confirming the 600W power rating, @kopeite7kimi replied that these specs for the GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 still include the dual-slot cooler.

It’s pretty impressive and it will be interesting to see the thermals of a 600W GPU without a huge three or four slot heatsink design. Additionally, it will be interesting to see how NVIDIA’s partners such as ASUS, MSI and GIGABYTE approach the RTX 50 series – will we also see smaller cards come to market or the same huge beasts?

The state’s children need more play and sports – especially in the interior, Central Valley – Daily News

The state’s children need more play and sports – especially in the interior, Central Valley – Daily News

INGLEWOOD — A national report found that nearly two-thirds of school-age children, particularly in the Central Valley, the Inland Empire and far northern California, are not meeting federal guidelines for physical activity, officials announced Friday.

During a Senate Education Committee hearing Friday morning at SoFi Stadium, the LA84 Foundation released the results of its 2024 California Play Equity Report, a study of statewide play equity, youth participation and physical activity. National research firm EVITARUS collected data for the report.

The report aims to create a new foundation for play equity, a concept that ensures all children have access to play and physical activity regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, zip code or socioeconomic status, according to the LA84 Foundation.

According to the report, California’s youth are not getting enough exercise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that teens ages 6 to 17 get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day, but more than two-thirds of children, about 66%, participate in sports or other activities .

Nearly 10% of California youth are “never active.” Less than two in five, about 39%, of children participate in physical education classes at school every day, the report said. About 58% of parents surveyed did not know that physical education in schools is not fully funded.

Physical activity levels are lowest among Latina and Black/African American girls, as well as Latino youth overall and children with disabilities. Youth with annual household incomes of $50,000 or less and those in the Inland Empire also face similar challenges.

In the last two years, about a third of young people refused to participate in sports because the cost of participation was not right. Some children showed no interest and others may not have had the time.

Parents who took part in the study say finances can be a barrier to keeping their children involved in sports. Nearly two-thirds, or about 63%, of parents said they had difficulty paying for costs associated with sports, such as equipment, uniforms and other items.

“Sport, games and exercise are essential for a child’s physical, emotional, social and academic development. Differences in access to gaming can perpetuate and exacerbate existing inequalities,” Renata Simril, president and CEO of the LA84 Foundation, said in a statement.

“The 2024 Play Equity Report expands on the research the LA84 Foundation has been conducting in LA County since 2016,” Simril added. “It is a roadmap that allows us to track nationwide progress in play and exercise now and in the future.”

While there remain challenges in increasing young people’s participation in sport and physical activity, the report highlights two key findings to achieve this.

Organized sports and structured play can increase the level of regular exercise in children. According to the report, teens who exercise daily or those who participate in at least one organized sport are more likely to exercise five times a week or more.

Additionally, study participants expressed strong support for elected officials and the state to invest in more opportunities for sports and other physical activities.

“This report reminds us how important play and exercise are to our children’s overall development. Combined with education, play, sports and physical activity, they all play a critical role in supporting their physical, social and emotional growth,” said state Sen. Josh Newman, D-Fullerton, in a statement.

Last year, Newman authored Senate Bill 291 to ensure a uniform standard for recess across all California schools.

“The benefits of unstructured gaming and peer-to-peer social interactions that provide respite are more important now than ever,” Newman added.

Simril noted that with global sporting events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Southern California, the state should seize the economic opportunity to support youth sports and physical activities.

Football: Sonoma Valley improves to 5-0 vs. Piner

Sonoma Valley improved to 5-0 on Friday night with an explosive second half to defeat Piner 35-7 at home to win the first league contest in the Mountain Division of the Redwood Empire Conference.

It wasn’t easy as the score was only 14-7 at halftime as both teams lost the ball too much, but the Dragons scored 21 points in the second half and put the game away.

Top takeaways

The Dragons’ defense certainly did its part, with two interceptions by Austin Hughes and Hudson Giarritta (who returned his for a touchdown), but it was the offense that rumbled all night.

Specifically, it was Cayden Waldrop who was banging around all night long.

Waldrop is starting to establish himself as one of the top running backs in the area this season, with a 16-carry, 146-yard, three-touchdown performance Friday night. He scored the first two points on runs of 2 and 4 yards, respectively, but the icing on the cake was his 40-yard scoring dash early in the fourth quarter. The slugger also broke off runs of 10 yards or more five times. He now has 10 rushing touchdowns this season and is no doubt a key factor in Sonoma’s undefeated start.

Although everything went well for Piner in the first half – including a fumble recovery and an interception – things just fell apart for the Prospectors in the second half. But if there’s one bright spot in the game, it’s that quarterback Soso Prak is fun to watch. The junior fits the mold of a dual-threat quarterback perfectly, using his legs to make plays out of almost nothing and his left arm to find his talented receivers. There was no better example than Piner’s scoring play when Prak took the snap late in the first quarter and Apollo Pereira missed a 41-yard shot.

Quotable

“Our guys are playing hard and I’m very pleased with our physical condition so far,” said Sonoma Valley head coach Max Pond. “Hats off to our offensive line and our running game, that’s what kept us going. We felt like they were getting tired as the game went on and we took advantage of that.”

“I couldn’t be more proud of the courage and hard work; “This is the physicality of a team that we will see all season,” Piner head coach Adam Rosenstein said. “We stuck with them and found out we were pretty strong physically and that makes me excited to continue playing in the league.”

Next

Sonoma Valley faces San Rafael (3-1), which defeated Healdsburg 18-13, in another crucial league matchup. The Prospectors travel to Santa Rosa (2-2), where a bye week is over.

£50,000 warning for breaching these cinema rules

£50,000 warning for breaching these cinema rules

Whether it’s talking through the film or vaping in the cinema, Brits should be careful before ignoring these common rules of cinema etiquette.

Failure to comply with cinema rules could result in fines of up to £50,000.

Researchers at Haypp reveal five common behaviors Brits exhibit at the cinema that could actually land them a hefty fine, and which of these common offenders Brits find most irritating.

Can I bring alcohol to the cinema?

If you plan to consume an alcoholic beverage at the cinema, be sure to check the cinema’s policy beforehand. Although many cinemas have an alcohol license, meaning they are allowed to sell alcohol on their premises, strict rules usually apply to this.

Licensing laws require control and monitoring of alcohol consumption. Allowing you to bring your own alcohol could be in breach of license requirements.

Viewing of age-restricted films by minors

Similar to laws governing the sale of alcohol, movie theaters are responsible for ensuring that individuals meet age requirements for films (12A, 15, 18). Failure to comply may result in fines for the cinema and not the individual.

Cinemas themselves face a fine of up to £20,000 if they allow underage viewers to watch films suitable for older age groups. Haypp’s data shows that a third of Brits feel uncomfortable watching a film if underage viewers are allowed in.

Can I vape in the cinema?

Due to the UK’s anti-smoking laws, vaping is banned in cinemas. Vaping is treated similarly to smoking in the Smoking Ban Act, which prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces.

This also includes cinemas. Although vaping does not produce the same harmful second-hand smoke as cigarettes, the law imposes hefty fines of £200 for people caught smoking in cinemas, including the lobby and toilets.

Can I bring food to the cinema?

Although it’s not something you’d typically get fined for, bringing in food and drink from outside is something that causes a lot of confusion among Brits. While some may scoff at those who make sure to hide their snacks under their jackets, you should actually be careful when bringing food to the cinema.

Some cinemas have strict policies against bringing in outside food. Violators may be asked to throw away the food or leave the cinema. Specifically, bringing in food from outside wasn’t particularly offensive to moviegoers, but over two-thirds admitted that noisy and smelly food was definitely unpleasant.

Shot in a cinema

Recording the movie can actually be considered piracy, especially if you share the footage on another platform. Recording a film (or part of a film) in a cinema is illegal under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

Anti-piracy laws are strictly enforced in the UK, surveillance measures are in place to catch offenders, and the penalty for doing so is just as severe as the law sounds, with offenders risking a fine of up to £50,000 and even possible prison time.

Surprisingly, new data from Haypp shows that film-loving Brits had no influence on how others watched films. Only 5% cared whether other viewers’ cameras were turned off.

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films. Joe Gow, who had served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should be retained in a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission. The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote. Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning. Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leaders became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites. The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making pornographic films and speaking publicly about them and for the questions it raises about free speech rights. Gow argued that his videos and two e-books he and his wife Carmen have published about their experiences in adult films are protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract. Zach Greenberg, an attorney at the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to…” academic freedom and the right to free speech.” “FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputation,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.” Republican lawmakers already view the Wisconsin university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget. Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said because Gow hasn’t taught in 20 years, he will be assigned general education courses, but she refuses to allow him to return to teaching in any role. Gow was criticized in 2018 for inviting porn actress Nina Hartley to give a talk on campus. She received $5,000 from tuition fees for her performance. He came up with the idea of bringing her to campus after filming a pornographic video with her, the university said. Gow and his wife’s e-books were written under the pseudonyms “Monogamy with Benefits: How Porn Enhances Our Relationships” and “Married with Benefits.” Our real-life adventures in the adult industry.” But they also star in a YouTube channel called “Sexy Healthy Cooking,” in which the couple cooks meals with porn actors.

Here’s what you need to know about your spare tire

Here’s what you need to know about your spare tire

A flat tire is always annoying, but a spare tire can help you get back on the road quickly. However, even if you have a spare tire, it may not be operational or safe when needed. Consumer Reports reveals what you need to know before a tire emergency occurs.

According to Consumer Reports, safety is the number one priority when a flat tire occurs. You should pull off the road as far as possible in a safe area.

Next, you’ll want to have a space-saving spare tire, affectionately known as a “doughnut.” It has long since replaced the full-size spare wheel in most passenger cars. If you’re lucky, it might be years before you need one, but it shouldn’t be forgotten.

Your spare tire expires just like your other four tires. You heard right. Replacement tires expire. The last two digits of the DOT number on the sidewall of the donut tire indicate the year the tire was manufactured. If it is more than ten years old, replace it.

Of course, a replacement tire only works if it is properly inflated. Check the pressure and condition of your spare tire every time you check the pressure of your other tires and refill as necessary.

Only 40% of new cars have a spare wheel. Manufacturers remove it to reduce production costs and reduce weight to reduce fuel consumption. So don’t assume you have one.

Instead, you’ll likely be given an air compressor or a can of tire sealant that you can use to repair a damaged tire and take it to a repair shop where it can be repaired or replaced.

Some cars, mostly luxury models, are equipped with run-flat tires that allow you to drive a certain distance, usually 50 miles, at moderate speeds – enough to get you home or to a service center for a replacement. You should not drive around with these tires or a patched tire as it is not a permanent solution.

Another important tip from CR is that no matter the solution to your car’s flat tire, you should learn to use it before you need it. You may need to use it in rain, darkness or other difficult circumstances.

Karl-Anthony Towns trade to Knicks stuns NBA fans as T-Wolves sign Julius Randle | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

The New York Knicks are acquiring Minnesota Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns via the Detroit Pistons for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and a first-round draft pick, according to Shams Charania and Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, more will be needed to complete the trade.

Fred Katz @Fred Katz

The Knicks and Timberwolves need a third team to facilitate a trade between Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and Karl-Anthony Towns. Both teams are above the first frontcourt, meaning neither can accept more money than they are spending in a deal.

Needless to say, this was stunning NBA news on Friday night, and Towns himself had a reaction to it.

And others were shocked or confused for various reasons.

Bobby Manning @Real Bob Manning

The #Knicks We were always going to have to trade Randle for a center. I thought it was someone like Stewart though… what madness. #Wolves had a tremendous 2nd frontcourt, fiscal concerns about Towns’ contract. He was probably gone at some point. But soon? Wow. https://t.co/8PmurHi1UH

NBA fans won’t have to wait long to see new teams’ players in action, as the regular season begins in less than a month. Additionally, the first regular season game between Minnesota and New York will take place on December 19th in Minneapolis.

Another tropical threat is possible through the Gulf next week

Another tropical threat is possible through the Gulf next week

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The Atlantic hurricane season may have produced fewer storms than expected so far, considering preseason forecasts warned of one of the most active seasons on record, but the storms that have developed have been extremely devastating.

The Atlantic basin is currently as busy as it has been all season.(WAFB)

Of the nine named storms that formed by September 27th, four have reached the US Gulf Coast as hurricanes, including Category 4 Hurricane Helene. Helene is also one of the nine major hurricanes that have struck the Gulf Coast since 2017 land, with seven of the nine hurricanes making landfall at Category 4 or 5 intensity.

The Atlantic basin is currently as busy as it has been all season.

Apart from that, the Atlantic basin is currently as busy as it has been all season. While the latest Helene advisory was being written, we were tracking Hurricane Isaac, Tropical Storm Joyce and two other events in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Isaac

Isaac became the sixth hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season on Friday. The good news is that intensity is likely near its peak Friday evening and is expected to gradually weaken over the open Atlantic over the course of the weekend.

Tropical Storm Joyce

Tropical Storm Joyce is also over the open Atlantic and is also likely nearing its peak. Further strengthening is possible into Saturday, and it is not ruled out that it will briefly become a hurricane. However, conditions are expected to become more adverse in the coming days and Joyce is likely to weaken over the open Atlantic.

East Atlantic wave

The National Hurricane Center is tracking a tropical wave east of Joyce that is forecast to have a 40% chance of development Friday evening. Regardless of development or not, this system is expected to persist over the open Atlantic.

A new threat from the Gulf

NHC is also monitoring a tropical wave moving through the Caribbean. While conditions for development are expected to remain generally unfavorable over the next few days, this could change next week. Various models suggest another storm could hit the Gulf by mid- to late next week, but confidence that it will happen is currently low. Remain calm over the weekend, but be aware that there is a chance of another storm in the Gulf next week. It is far too early to speculate about the possible intensity or course.

Rutgers beat Washington 4-0 for the first time since 2012

Rutgers beat Washington 4-0 for the first time since 2012

Rutgers fought back but failed to pull out a narrow 21-18 win Friday against Washington — last year’s national championship runner-up — to move to 4-0 for the first time since 2012.

Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis and running back Kyle Monangai led the offense.

And when they needed it, several stupid penalties from the Huskies helped the Scarlet Knights.

The nationally televised game against Rutgers was the first Big Ten match of the year after facing Howard, Akron and Virginia Tech earlier in the season.

Kaliakmanis completed 14 of 24 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Monangai posted his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game on a night in which he passed Isiah Pacheco and moved into seventh place on Rutgers’ all-time rushing list.

Monangai ran for 132 yards, including a confident rush in which he blocked several tackles and gained 42 yards in the third quarter.

The Huskies managed to make the game interesting with a drive in the final minute, trailing by just three.

Washington was able to get the ball into Rutgers territory with a series of passes before kicker Grady Gross missed a 55-yard field goal attempt wide left as time expired.

It was his third missed field goal of the game.

The Rutgers sideline spilled onto the field and the lights flickered in celebration as the final whistle blew.

The Blackout Game at SHI Stadium drew 54,079 fans, the second highest attendance in its history.

“You could feel it in this stadium tonight. That’s what Big Ten football is all about and that’s what I want for New Jersey,” said Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. “This is what I have always wanted for New Jersey, to exist in our state. … Tonight was a good step, but that’s all. It’s a victory. It’s exciting; It is good.”

Monangai’s 1-yard rushing touchdown run with 11:16 left in the second quarter erased a 3-0 Scarlet Knights deficit.

Later in the second game, the Scarlet Knights took advantage of one of the Huskies’ biggest mistakes of the night.

Washington blocked a 38-yard field goal attempt by Rutgers, but it was nullified when Vince Holmes was called for an illegal substitution to breathe new life into Rutgers.

On the ensuing play, Kaliakmanis connected with receiver Ian Strong for a jump-ball touchdown, extending the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 14-3 with 30 seconds left before halftime.

Late in the third quarter, Washington finally found the end zone in a six-play drive that culminated in Huskies quarterback Will Rodgers finding Denzel Boston for a 51-yard touchdown pass.

While the touchdown late in the third quarter pulled the Huskies to within five, Rutgers responded with a touchdown of its own 4:03 into the final quarter as Samuel Brown V powered his way to a 37-yard scoring run to take the lead 21-21 expanded. 10.

The Huskies managed to cut the lead with a drive late in the game in the fourth quarter, cutting Rutgers’ lead to three on a drive that started at the Washington 24-yard line.

It culminated in the Huskies staying alive with a short rush on fourth-and-1 before Rodgers connected with Boston in the end zone.

The Huskies completed the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 21-18 with 1:40 left.

Washington opened the scoring with a 22-yard field goal, marking the first time since November 25 that Rutgers allowed an opponent to score in the first quarter.

On Friday, the Huskies and Scarlet Knights faced off for the first time since 2017 and was Washington’s first road game against a Big Ten opponent as a member of the conference.

“Hats off to you, Greg [Schiano’s] have done. He immediately put the thing back together. I think the fans and the students are evolving and growing with him,” said Huskies coach Jedd Fisch.
