Two of the Big Ten’s top teams will face off Saturday when No. 12 Michigan hosts Minnesota. The Wolverines are coming off a dramatic 27-24 win over USC and will look to move to 2-0 in Big Ten play, while the Golden Gophers look to rebound from a 31-14 loss to Iowa.

Michigan has a four-game winning streak in this series, including a 52-10 win over the Gophers in Minneapolis last season. But Minnesota has a positive history at Michigan Stadium. In fact, the Gophers’ last three wins over the Wolverines took place in the building (2014, 2005 and 1986).

To add another win to that tally, the Gophers will have to stop the run better than they did against the Hawkeyes in Week 3. Minnesota led 14-7 at halftime but outscored 24-0 after halftime following a punishing ground play by the Hawkeyes. The Wolverines will look to follow a similar scenario after relying heavily on their running game to get past the Trojans.

Michigan vs. Minnesota: What you need to know

Star Backs: Michigan running back Kalel Mullings was rated a four-star linebacker in the class of 2020 and spent most of his first three seasons with the Wolverines on defense. But after auditioning on offense in 2022, he became the team’s No. 3 prospect in the program’s 2023 national title run. With Blake Corum out, Mullings has risen to the top of the running back room. He is averaging 8.1 yards per carry, and his 429 yards in four games far exceed his career total of 253 earlier in the season. Mullings’ late-career renaissance is a fascinating story for the Wolverines, and his defensive background is evident in the tough style in which he runs. Minnesota counters with Darius Taylor, who rushed for 799 yards in just six games last season. He was under pressure last week against Iowa but has already scored four total touchdowns this season.

Orji experiment: Michigan turned to junior quarterback Alex Orji to start against USC last week and he got the job done. The former three-star prospect is a limited thrower — he completed just 7 of 12 passes for 32 yards against the Trojans — but took care of the football and made plays with his legs. While the Wolverines are clearly one-dimensional with Orji at quarterback, he amplifies that lone dimension in a way that makes Michigan difficult to defend. As his tenure as a starter continues, it will be interesting to see if coach Sherrone Moore gives Orji more opportunities in the passing game.

Hard route: The trip to Michigan is part of a difficult stretch to open Big Ten play for the Gophers, who will see no reprieve after Iowa kicked them in the teeth. After that similarly physical contest in Michigan, the Gophers will host No. 13 USC on Oct. 5 before traveling to the West Coast to play UCLA. In total, Minnesota will play seven weeks in a row to start the season before having two bye weeks in the second half of the season.

Michigan vs. Minnesota prediction, tips

This will be a devastating, drawn-out battle in which Minnesota’s defense will have to be better against the run than it was in last week’s 31-14 loss to Iowa. The problem is that Michigan may actually be better at hitting the rock than the Hawkeyes. Accommodating Kalel Mullings, Donovan Edwards and Alex Orji for four quarters is a difficult task, and the Wolverines should be able to create separation in the second half with the help of their solid defense. Pick: Michigan -9.5

The network’s evening news barely mentions the new ICE report on 425,000 criminal migrants in the United States

“NBC Nightly News” was the network’s only primetime newscast Friday night to report groundbreaking new data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) showing that more than 400,000 illegal immigrants convicted of crimes are currently in custody United States are free.

Both ABC’s “World News Tonight” and “CBS Evening News” made no mention of the findings that ICE provided this week in a letter to Congress that was reported by several other media outlets on Friday. They simply reported on Vice President Kamala Harris’ trip to Arizona’s border with Mexico and praised her policy proposals on immigration.

Only NBC News’ evening news program mentioned the letter, although it did not cover the full scope of the findings – it simply reported that “more than 13,000 migrants previously convicted of murder are currently free in the United States.”

Fox News Digital reported Friday that ICE sent a letter this week to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, and other members of Congress showing that there are 425,431 convicted criminal migrants — and 222,141 with pending criminal charges — as of July 2024. who have crossed the U.S. southern border illegally and are awaiting deportation from the country.

According to the report, none of these criminal migrants will be detained, including those who have received their final deportation order or are undergoing deportation proceedings.

Of these 425,431 convicted criminals, 62,231 were convicted of assault, 14,301 were convicted of burglary, 56,533 were convicted of drug abuse, and 13,099 were convicted of murder. Another 2,521 were convicted of kidnapping and 15,811 were convicted of sexual assault.

“NBC Nightly News” briefly noted the existence of the letter and the more than 13,000 illegal immigrants convicted of murder in the country, but noted that nearly half a million other criminal immigrants are not currently incarcerated in the United States

The other two networks made no mention of the shocking results at all on their prime-time nightly newscasts on Friday.

“CBS Evening News” made no mention of the letter, instead focusing on the dueling immigration rhetoric of the Harris and Trump presidential campaigns.

The network noted that Harris “has touted himself as tough on cross-border crime” and reported that “foot traffic across the entire U.S.-Mexico border has declined in recent months,” thanks in part to Mexico’s crackdown on immigration as well as the Biden-Harris administration guidelines.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” took the same approach to reporting on the border issue, mentioning Harris’ trip to Arizona this week and how she sought to portray his vision of border security against that of former President Trump.

The network reported that asylum restrictions enacted by the Biden-Harris administration in June had led to a “drastic decline in encounters across the border.” It also mentioned Harris’ border policy mantra that “we can be a nation of laws and also a nation of immigrants.”

Trump criticized Harris’ border policies following the release of the ICE data, telling supporters at a campaign rally in Michigan on Friday: “We’re like a landfill. Non-citizens, convicted criminals from around the world are currently at large in the United States of America.”

49ers Keys to Victory vs. Patriots in Week 4

49ers Keys to Victory vs. Patriots in Week 4

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

Videos are auto-filled by a partner. This website has no control over the videos displayed above.

The San Francisco 49ers are back at their fortress, Levi’s Stadium, to take on the New England Patriots. This return home is hugely important as the 49ers are determined to end a two-game losing streak and regain their winning form. Will the 49ers retain the key to victory in Week 4 and make their homecoming a triumphant experience?

Attack the center of the field

The Patriots rank 27th in passing yards per game, allowing offenses to throw for 244.3 yards per game. The 49ers’ passing offense ranks second in the NFL, averaging 267.7 yards per game. The weakness of the Patriots defense is the coverage provided by their linebackers. Raekwon McMillan has Pro Football Focus’ highest coverage grade at 67.9. He has allowed five balls for 54 yards on targeted attacks.

Given this defensive vulnerability, the running backs and tight ends are poised to have an outstanding day in the middle of the field. Jauan Jennings, with his potential to explode on the field, could be the game-changer. If the Patriots’ linebackers play out of position like the Rams did, Jennings could be on track for a breakout game.

Become one-dimensional

Expect the Patriots defense to set up the box with 6-8 players and force Brock Purdy to throw. The 49ers don’t want to be one-dimensional in this game and prioritize the Patriots’ pass defense. The Patriots’ run defense ranks fifth among NFL defenses against the run, allowing 83 yards per game. In Week 1, the Patriots held the Bengals to 70 yards rushing on 16 attempts and one touchdown. In Week 2, they held the Seahawks to 46 yards on 19 attempts and one touchdown. In Week 3, the Patriots’ defense allowed the Jets 133 yards on 33 attempts and one touchdown.

The 49ers can even run the ball against stacked boxes. They must continue to find ways to gain positive yards on the ground to set up the play-action pass. The magic number of 30 attempts should allow the 49ers to successfully compete against the Patriots’ run defense.

Chip Keion White

The 49ers should have one goal on defense: Don’t leave Patriots defensive end Keion White alone. White has 12 pressures, four sacks, three hits and five hurries this season. Although he is dealing with an injury, he is not on the Patriots’ injury report. Expect White to come out and terrorize the 49ers offensive line. If he goes up against Colton McKivitz, expect the 49ers to add a tight end to take him to the top spot.

If tight end George Kittle plays, the 49ers get a nice security blanket on the edge against White. Using 12 personnel could be the way to go in this matchup against the Patriots’ best defender.

Don’t lose Hunter Henry

Hunter Henry leads the Patriots with 17 targets and 12 receptions. It’s fair to say that Jacoby Brissett trusts his tight end with the ball. The 49ers want to compete well against an experienced tight end like Henry. Last week against the Los Angeles Rams, 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell was in man coverage on a tight end and cost the team an explosive play on the field with a big pass interference call.

The Patriots could use 12 personnel (two tight end sets) and force the 49ers to cover with every other linebacker not named Fred Warner. The Patriots like to use Henry in their short passing game (0-9 yards). He caught nine of 10 passes for 91 yards in the middle short area of the field. The 49ers can’t lose Henry in the passing game.

Take the barrel away

Rhamondre Stevenson will look to get back on track against the 49ers’ ninth-ranked run defense. He leads the Patriots’ eight-pronged rushing offense with 224 yards, an average of 4.3 yards per attempt and two touchdowns. The Patriots average 144.3 rushing yards per game.

The 49ers defensive front will look different without Javon Hargrave (partially torn triceps) and newly injured defensive tackle Jordan Elliot (ankle). Whoever the 49ers use upfront will have to prevent the Patriots from running the ball and controlling the clock. The 49ers defense cannot afford to miss out on explosive plays on the ground. Take away the run and the Patriots become one-dimensional and the 49ers’ safeties become free.

While this game doesn’t hurt the 49ers’ chances of making the playoffs, it feels like a must-win situation. The team will look to avoid a three-game losing streak by holding on to these keys to victory and securing a much-needed home win against the Patriots.
