Utah single mother with terminal cancer is raising money for her own funeral through GoFundMe

Utah single mother with terminal cancer is raising money for her own funeral through GoFundMe

A Utah mother who was given just three months to live is raising money for her own funeral after “silently battling a rare, terminal cancer” for two years.

Erika Diarte-Carr, 30, originally set a goal of $5,000 for her GoFundMe campaign to cover the cost of a future service. Since then, however, more than 30,000 donors have helped her raise $900,000 as of Sunday, September 29 – the rest of the donations are intended for her to put into a trust fund for her two children.

Mother to Jeremiah, 7, and Aaliyah, 5, Erika described her children as her “whole life” in describing the fundraiser as she revealed in September that she has been battling small cell lung cancer for two years.

She was first diagnosed with cancer on May 7, 2022, when she went to the emergency room with what she thought was a “normal shoulder injury,” according to local station ABC4 and the single mother’s GoFundMe description. Now, she wrote, the doctor’s words are “replaying” in her head: “I hope you have a good support system at home because you are going to need it, you have a long and hard road ahead of you.”

“The doctor then told me that there were multiple tumors that had metastasized to other parts of my body, including my skeleton, and so we were able to find the tumor that was causing my shoulder pain,” Erika wrote. “By this point the damage had already been done. In that moment, my life and the lives of my children and everyone around us were changed forever.”

Less than two years later, on January 17, 2024, Erika was diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome, which the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases describes as a condition caused by the body “overlong periods of time producing too much hormone cortisol”. Time span.” According to the institute, only 40 to 70 people out of a million suffer from Cushing’s.

“That’s when I started to flag and everything got worse,” she told ABC4, adding that this caused “most” of her health problems, including the inability to walk.

As the Utah mom explained on her GoFundMe, the diagnosis caused “so many other underlying issues,” including rapid weight gain and swelling, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, “moon face,” muscle and bone loss, and more.

“Since my diagnosis, I have managed to continue working full-time, initially only taking two months off for surgeries, biopsies, appointments, and radiation and chemotherapy treatments,” she wrote. “All while still being a full-time mom. While I have an AMAZING support system, over time it has taken a huge financial, emotional, mental and physical toll on all of us.”

In an update to her campaign, citing an oncologist appointment on September 18, Erika wrote that she had since “decided to stop the treatments as they were no longer helping.” She revealed that she still had three months to live.

“3 months to spend with my babies and my loved ones. 3 months to make the most of the time I have left,” she wrote. “Over the next few months I need to make sure my kids are okay while I’m away. I now face the most difficult task of planning my own funeral.”

While Erika wrote that she is “ashamed and embarrassed for people to know the truth about her diagnosis,” she said that not asking for help is “no longer an option” for her, which led to her decision to to start their fundraising campaign.

After acknowledging her “great medical team” – including Carl Gray and Kylie Money of Ogden Hematology Oncology, Steven Brown of Tanner Clinic and Brandon Fisher – the mother wrote that any funds in excess of her funeral expenses will be placed in a trust fund for their children are paid in.

“It happened overnight. I never expected this,” Erika told ABC4 about the amount of money raised through the fundraiser, which surpassed $900,000 as of September 29th.

“I never expected that there would be a big memorial service or that many people would come forward and help me,” she added. “The way it went, I’m just shocked… just very grateful for everyone and everything that was there.”

The pig slaughter invasion has begun

The pig slaughter invasion has begun

“What we have seen is criminal groups that are invested in this region and are looking beyond this region for similar operations,” Hofmann says of international expansion.

The wealthy, authoritarian city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has become the largest epicenter of pig slaughter outside Southeast Asia since 2021. According to the United Nations, international migrants make up more than 88 percent of the UAE’s population, providing a uniquely diverse and potentially vulnerable workforce.

“Dubai is both a destination and a country of transition,” says Mina Chiang, founder and director of Humanity Research Consultancy, a social enterprise focused on human trafficking. “We can see a lot of connections actually operating in Dubai itself.”

In July, Humanity Research Consultancy identified at least six suspected scams believed to be operating in the Dubai area. The investigation – based on statements from forced laborers, leaked data from a cyberattack and social media posts – identified potential complexes around industrial and investment parks. These operations “are, to the best of our knowledge, managed by Chinese-speaking criminals,” the investigation says, adding that they operate in a similar manner to connections in Southeast Asia.

“They call it a writing center. But a huge scam call center,” reads a one-star review for a Dubai location on Google Maps. Another says: “It’s mainly poor people from Africa who work there and most of them are imprisoned in Dubai. No matter how much they offer you, everything is a scam. I strongly recommend never going there.”

Dubai Police did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment about potential fraud hubs in the city.

In Dubai, pig slaughterhouses may have emerged due to immigration and labor dynamics, but in several African countries this activity has emerged due to an existing culture of organized fraud.

In Nigeria, where digital fraud has been a major illicit industry on numerous platforms for years, it was almost inevitable that attackers would adopt the conceits and tactics of pig slaughter. The system has become so sophisticated that there are now readily available pre-built cryptocurrency investment platforms, templates and scripts for sale online for anyone who wants to get started. A gang already used to pulling off romance scams or business email compromise maneuvers could easily get used to the premise and rhythm of pig slaughter.

“If you look at West Africa’s history of social engineering stuff, it’s a powerful mix,” says Sean Gallagher, senior threat researcher at Sophos. “There are many people who see it as a way to make a living, especially in Nigeria. And the technology is easily transferable. We have seen pig slaughter packages for sale that contained fake crypto sites and scripts that appeared to be tailored to African victims.”

Nigerian law enforcement agencies are increasingly pursuing cases and even securing convictions specifically related to pig slaughter. Tokazowski of Gallagher and Intelligence for Good also say that while investigating and interacting with scammers, they have seen technical signs that attacks on pig slaughter could also be coming from Ghana. The US Embassy in Ghana has warned of the possibility of financial fraud from the country.

How to save money through better plumbing skills

How to save money through better plumbing skills

A basic idea about plumbing significantly reduces the household costs for the homeowners. With a little knowledge and a few minutes of time, you can save money on everything from repairing your pipes to conserving water.

Find and fix the leaks

Leaks from faucets and pipes are the most common plumbing problems in Indian homes. Very often, a single leaky tap can result in the loss of thousands of liters per year, driving up your water bill. Learn to detect leaks early and replace the worn washer or gasket to prevent water loss and possible damage to your property.

Being able to spot the signs of leaks underground, such as when an area of your garden becomes unusually waterlogged, which then leads to unexpectedly high water bills, is an early detection feature. A person can help prevent such a situation by continuing to avoid large, extensive excavations and significant pipe replacement costs.

Water Heater Maintenance

Hard water is a common phenomenon in many cities in India and affects water heaters. If the geyser is constantly maintained, its lifespan will be extended and it will be energy efficient at the same time. For example, the sediment that accumulates inside a geyser needs to be cleaned. With this knowledge, frequent replacements can be avoided and electricity costs can be reduced.

Understanding water pressure

High water pressure may look good, but in reality it puts a strain on the plumbing system and can lead to leaks and equipment damage. When to check the water pressure in your home and how to install a pressure regulator if necessary are skills that can prevent your problems.

This is about DIY work

While hiring a professional plumber shouldn’t be ruled out, most small problems can be solved with simple handyman skills. Basic knowledge of how to unclog a drain, change faucets, or fix a running toilet will avoid the costs associated with unnecessary use of a plumber. At the same time, however, it is good to know and assess when the error exceeds your technical know-how and you should leave the matter to the experts, otherwise even more serious damage could occur.

Water Saving Techniques: Water efficient plumbing fixtures and low flow plumbing supplies

Water scarcity is beginning to manifest itself as an emerging problem in various hinterlands of this country. Implementing and applying efficient water use can help significantly reduce the high cost of water consumption bills. It consists of repairing low-flow faucets, reusing gray water in the garden and fixing leaks at the right time.

Selection of the appropriate components

Proper knowledge of the appropriate plumbing material according to the type of water in your area can avoid frequent replacements. For example, if your area has hard water, PVC insulated pipes can prevent buildup and corrosion. This, in turn, increases the lifespan of the plumbing appliances used in households.

Preventive maintenance

This means that if you regularly check your plumbing system, you may be able to spot some problems over time. Just catching and testing leaks, two of the most basic things we can do, will prevent some disgustingly expensive plumbing crises. Make sure you understand several factors, such as local plumbing codes. By understanding local plumbing codes, we are able to avoid several costly mistakes that can occur when renovating or building a new home.

With this knowledge, your plumbing work will not be subject to such fines and necessary corrections for expensive work later on. This will therefore help you save hundreds of thousands of rupees every year by understanding your home plumbing better. On the other hand, the key to saving money on plumbing is time-consuming measures: proactivity, timely repair, rational selection of materials and water. Plus, this knowledge will save you money while contributing to water conservation efforts in our community.

Alabama is ranked No. 1 in college football’s NCAA Re-Rank 1-134 after defeating Georgia

Alabama takes over as the new No. 1 USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-134 after Saturday night’s memorable win over Georgia.

The Crimson Tide jump four spots from last week, while the Bulldogs fall four spots to No. 5. This pair ranks No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Tennessee.

Alabama leads the Longhorns by a hair. Texas is coming off a very good road win against Michigan and a second Power Four win against Mississippi State in the program’s SEC debut. However, the Crimson Tide’s win on Saturday is the best of any team so far this season, and they also won at non-conference Wisconsin. Additionally, Alabama’s win over Western Kentucky surpasses the Longhorns’ Group of Five wins over Colorado State, Texas-San Antonio and Louisiana-Monroe.

The high-profile road loss secures Georgia as the top-ranked team with one loss and keeps the Bulldogs ahead of several undefeated Power Four rivals in No. 6 Oregon, No. 7 Penn State, No. 8 Miami, No. 9 Iowa State and No. 10 Missouri .

Ups and downs: The Alabama-Georgia Classic lists Week 5’s winners and losers

Another planned SEC contender suffered a steeper decline. After the 17:20 loss to Kentucky, Mississippi falls from 6th place to 15th place. In the Big 12, Utah fell seven spots to No. 16 after its loss to Arizona.

There are two new faces breaking into the top 25. One of those is No. 24 Rutgers, which moved to 4-0 for the first time since 2012 after a narrow win over Washington. Next up is No. 25 Indiana, which is 5-0 for the first time since 1967 after defeating Maryland in its Big Ten opener.

The actor plays Bucky Barnes in various MCU films and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV show and defends the superhero series after a series of poorly received episodes.

“It’s become really convenient to pick on it [Marvel films]. And that’s okay. “Everyone has an opinion,” he said diversity during a conversation about his appearance as Donald Trump in The apprentice.

“Sometimes I protect him because the intention is really damn good. It’s just damn hard to keep making a good film,” he added.

Stan will reprise his Marvel role in the upcoming season lightning*in which a group of villains and morally gray heroes come together to undertake dangerous missions on behalf of the government.

He described Bucky’s role in the film as “kind of similar.” One flew over the cuckoo’s nest – a guy who comes into this chaotic and degenerate group and somehow finds a way to unite them.”

Epic is suing Google – again – and now Samsung

Epic is suing Google – again – and now Samsung

Four years after Epic sued Google over an illegal app store monopoly – a case the company won last December – Epic is suing again. The Fortnite The game developer has filed a lawsuit second Antitrust lawsuit against Google and now Samsung alleging illegal conspiracy to undermine third-party app stores.

The lawsuit centers on Samsung’s “Auto Blocker” feature, which is now enabled by default on new Samsung phones. While enabled, it automatically prevents users from installing apps unless they come from “authorized sources” – namely the Google and Samsung app stores. Epic claims that there is no process for “authorizing” a competing business.

When Epic filed its original lawsuits against Google and Apple in August 2020, the company did not yet have its own mobile app store. Now the time has come: On August 16, the Epic Games Store launched on Android worldwide and on iPhones in the European Union, where EU digital markets law forced Apple to allow alternative stores.

But a month before the company could open its own store, Epic claims, Samsung suddenly decided to enable auto-blocker more or less by default – making it harder for new phone buyers to install competing apps themselves.

In fact, I can’t install Epic Games Store with Auto Blocker enabled. It works fine when turned off.
Photo by Sean Hollister / The Verge

Epic claims that it now requires “an exceptionally involved 21-step process” to download a third-party app store on a Samsung phone, increasing the likelihood that users will give up somewhere.

While “21 steps” seems like an exaggeration to me (Epic’s own website claims that disabling the auto-blocker only takes four steps!), I can see the company’s point of view when I try it out on my own Samsung phone. Not only is the automatic blocker preventing me from installing the new Epic Games Store, the “Can’t install app” pop-up no longer tells me how to disable the automatic blocker.

When I search for “turn off autoblocker” in the universal search bar on my Samsung phone, no relevant search results appear. When I search for “auto-blocker” I have to tap through several additional screens to turn it off. One of them asks me if I’m really sure and claims, “Auto Blocker protects your phone by blocking threats and other suspicious activity.”

Today, Epic claims that the promise of security is completely false: “Auto Blocker does not assess the security of a specific source or a specific app before blocking an installation,” the legal complaint says.

“This thing is not intended to protect against malware, which would be a perfectly legitimate purpose,” says Epic CEO Tim Sweeney. “The thing is supposed to prevent competition.”

“This thing is not intended to protect against malware.”

However, in a roundtable interview with journalists, Sweeney admits that he has no evidence yet that Google and Samsung worked together – he hopes that this will come to light in the legal disclosure process, as has happened with so many embarrassing things Epic vs Google. He also admits that he didn’t actually ask Samsung if the company would voluntarily make the Epic Games Store an “authorized source.”

As with Sweeney’s previous lawsuits, he claims this is because he is fighting on behalf of all app developers, not just Epic.

“If we had fought Epic vs Apple And Epic vs Google Based on Epic’s special privileges alone, settlement discussions with Apple and Google might have been fruitful,” Sweeney says. “But if we did that, we would sell all the developers.”

Instead, he says, he privately asked Samsung to either change the automatic blocker to be disabled by default or create an “honest whitelisting process” that would automatically allow honest apps through Samsung’s new barrier. When Samsung and Epic could not agree on the “basis” of this whitelisting process, Epic threatened legal action and even passed on a draft of today’s legal complaint to Samsung.

We asked Samsung to confirm or deny whether Auto Blocker actually scans an app for threats or suspicious activity and whether it partners with Google on this feature. We have not received a response yet.

However, I suspect that Samsung will point out that it doesn’t secretly or silently turn on the auto-blocker; It gives users a choice. “The default setting for Auto Blocker is set to On in the phone’s initial setup wizard, but you can also change this setting to Off during the initial setup,” the company’s support page says.

It’s also not yet clear whether Epic was harmed by Auto Blocker. Since Samsung enabled the feature by default, only two new Samsung phones have shipped. While Sweeney claims that Google’s previous attempts to disrupt third-party apps (“Unknown Sources”) have resulted in half of the people who clicked “Download” partially giving up, he admits that he hasn’t heard any yet There is data to prove that the Samsung function works, but things can get worse.

He says the Epic Games Store has now reached 10 million mobile installs, against a “completely achievable” 100 million goal by the end of the year. He characterizes this as “traction, but not huge.”

In Epic vs Google, The company argued that Unknown Sources’ installation process made it so difficult to attract new users to a competing app store that Sweeney was eventually forced to move there Fortnite to Google’s store, even though he promised Samsung he wouldn’t do it. Although the jury wasn’t asked to rule on “Unknown Sources” specifically, it concluded that Epic was harmed overall by Google’s conduct.

Epic is again demanding a jury trial this time.

Speaking of which Epic vs Googlewe expect Judge James Donato to issue his final order there any day, and it’s easy to imagine a world in which Epic vs Samsung will be influenced by how he decides to change Google’s behavior. If he agrees to Epic’s biggest demands, the Google Play Store would be forced to carry the Epic Games Store and other app stores inside and third-party app stores like Epic’s would also gain access to Google Play’s entire app catalog. In this world, Auto Blocker seems a little less relevant.

However, an appeal from Google is guaranteed, and Epic is positioning today’s new lawsuit as a way to stop Google and its partners from pursuing a “malicious compliance strategy” in the meantime. One could even argue that Judge Donato asked for it: in Epic vs GoogleHe repeatedly told Epic’s lawyers that he would not grant their request for an anti-circumvention clause to stop Google from getting creative with workarounds.

“We don’t have any injunctions that don’t involve violations of the law. If you have a problem, you can come back,” he said last November.

Sweeney wouldn’t necessarily commit to suing other companies that put up barriers to third-party app stores, but says Epic is “watching this very closely.”

“Fortunately, no one but Samsung has done this, and we hope it stays that way.”

Google’s auto-podcasting tool can now aggregate YouTube videos

Google’s auto-podcasting tool can now aggregate YouTube videos

TL;DR

  • NotebookLM now supports two new source types: YouTube videos and audio files.
  • The tool can automatically generate notes, summaries, discussions, and more from public YouTube videos.
  • You can also create comprehensive study guides from audio files.

YouTube offers a wealth of educational content and many of us use the platform to learn new things or get help with school work. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have built-in features to help students take notes or get a quick summary of topics discussed in a video. While we don’t expect YouTube to add such features, NotebookLM has a new feature that could be helpful.

NotebookLM is Google’s AI-powered research and writing assistant that lets you quickly create notes, study guides, discussions with AI moderators, and more based on information from various sources. Previously, the tool allowed users to import information from PDF files, websites, Google Docs, Slides, and text/Markdown files. Now Google has added support for YouTube videos and audio files.

Google says NotebookLM can now summarize key concepts from public YouTube videos “and enables detailed exploration through inline quotes linked directly to the video’s transcripts.” The tool also lets you create AI-powered discussions based on the video create and have a built-in YouTube player that allows you to watch the video and prepare notes at the same time.

With audio files, NotebookLM can create comprehensive study guides and help you find specific information in the audio transcript. Along with these new sources, Google has added a faster way to share audio summaries created in NotebookLM, which generates shareable URLs for the AI-hosted discussions.

You can try out these new features by going to the NotebookLM website and adding a URL of a public YouTube video or audio file to your notebook. Note that the shareable audio summary URLs are currently not available to Workspace users.

What would a ground invasion mean for Lebanon and Israel? | Israel-Lebanon attacks news

What would a ground invasion mean for Lebanon and Israel? | Israel-Lebanon attacks news

The conflict between the Lebanese Hezbollah group and Israel, which has been simmering for months, if not years, has been exacerbated by Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza.

What was once speculation – and is now fact – is no less shocking: a full-scale war between Hezbollah and Israel is underway.

The last 13 days have seen a dramatic increase in violence between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. Against a backdrop of airstrikes and rocket attacks, Mossad’s campaign of mass murder, using pagers and walkie-talkies against Hezbollah members, left dozens of people dead and thousands injured. A wave of airstrikes and retaliatory missile attacks followed.

On September 23, Israel launched its largest airstrike in years after threatening the people of southern Lebanon to leave immediately or face destruction. With the bulk of the Israeli Air Force, more than 1,300 targets were hit throughout Lebanon, but especially in the south. They were the most intense air strikes in years.

Four days later, Hezbollah’s secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed along with the group of senior commanders he was meeting with when 85 “bunker buster” bombs fell on one in a brutal decapitation strike that leveled several buildings southern suburbs of Beirut were dropped in built-up areas.

Nevertheless, Hezbollah continues to fire rockets and missiles at Israeli targets. An airstrike will not be the solution to Israel’s problems. Hezbollah has been preparing for exactly this scenario for years, spreading its rocket forces across the country. So what’s the plan?

Four scenarios

By sending reinforcements to the north, the 98th Division of combat-hardened airborne troops and the activation of reservists in units of the Northern Command, Israel is sending a signal: it is serious about its intentions in dealing with Hezbollah.

But what does that mean in practical terms? What would victory look like for Israel?

Eradicate Hezbollah? This is highly unlikely. The group is anchored in Lebanese society, particularly among the Shiite population in the south of the country.

Fighting Hezbollah will only strengthen it, since it is impossible to eradicate Hezbollah as an idea.

When Israel announced it would destroy the group in 2006, it made Israel look weak since at the time Hezbollah only needed to survive the conflict to claim victory – a low bar.

A quick violent raid? This is also risky. Attacks on local Hezbollah missile sites and command centers play a role in Hezbollah’s strength. The group has been training for this case for years. Its fighters have received extensive training and may have combat experience from the war in Syria.

Are you stoking dissent and possible civil war in Lebanon? This would be an unlikely scenario in which the simmering dissent of some parts of Lebanese society towards Hezbollah would be exploited and somehow encouraged, especially after the group helped put down demonstrations in 2019 against the escalating economic crisis. The idea would be to keep Hezbollah occupied and focused on the interior rather than Israel.

This would be a longer-term strategy with no guarantee of success and the all-too-real likelihood that any civil conflict would change in scope and direction and metastasize into something no one could control, least of all Israel.

Create a buffer zone and drive Hezbollah forces away from the border? Possibly, but ultimately a potential disaster.

A buffer zone

It may sound good on paper or in a meeting, but any attempt by Israel to create a buffer zone around the border would most likely end badly for Israel.

To create the buffer, Israel would have to deploy ground forces to hold the ground. The mountains and rocky terrain make movement difficult and restrict tanks and other vehicles to roads, making Hezbollah ambushes much easier.

In 2006, Hezbollah surprised Israeli forces by effectively ambushing their tank columns and shelling Israeli patrols. Israeli army units struggled to defend themselves, and their inexperience often led to catastrophic mistakes. At least 20 tanks were destroyed or damaged beyond repair during the war as commanders with no combat experience led column after column of tanks into carefully prepared ambushes.

That won’t happen this time. Israel has learned from its mistakes; Its combat units are battle-hardened, if exhausted, after a year-long battle with Hamas militants in the city. Internally, the Israeli army is open and relatively quick to voice and correct errors in doctrine. Your army won’t make the same mistake twice.

But Hezbollah has also learned and significantly strengthened its power. In 2006 there were about 5,000 fighters in the south. This number has now grown to around 20,000 to 30,000, with thousands more in reserve. Its special unit, the Radwan Force, has 3,000 soldiers who are specially trained for operations in the south and know it like the back of their hand.

Both sides are using technology, namely surveillance drones, to track the opposition. Hezbollah has a large arsenal of sophisticated anti-tank weapons such as the Kornet missile, which has proven effective against Israel’s Merkava tanks.

Any buffer zone means Israel must maintain troops in the buffer zone in fortified positions, along with aggressive patrols, surveillance and air power. All ground forces would be constant targets for roadside bombs, snipers, ambushes and rocket attacks. As long as Israeli forces remained there, a stream of body bags would return to Israel.

Even if this scenario were to occur, it would not prevent Hezbollah from launching rockets, missiles and drones into Israel. Israeli military planners could increase the depth of the buffer zone. However, Hezbollah has an arsenal large enough to fire rockets from anywhere in Lebanon and could still hit targets deep inside Israel.

The larger the territory captured, the more Lebanese would fall under Israeli occupation.

As rocket attacks would continue from parts of Lebanon not yet controlled by Israel, an ever-expanding buffer zone would eventually reach practical limits or be forced into the unlikely position of taking over the entire country or withdrawing.

There is a real danger of “mission creep,” where a simple goal—in this case, creating a buffer zone—sounds easy to achieve but is impossible to achieve. This would, in the long run, plunge the Israeli military into a quagmire that its finances can ill afford, a disaster waiting to happen.

At what point does Israel realize that there may be no military solution to this impasse and that negotiations over Gaza are the answer?

Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah and the devastation of Helene in the southeast: morning overview

Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah and the devastation of Helene in the southeast: morning overview

Israel’s recent attacks on Hezbollah reveal weaknesses in Iran’s proxy strategy. Communities from Florida to North Carolina are grappling with the devastation caused by Helene. And Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens delivers an outstanding performance in Week 4 of the NFL season.

This is what you should know today.

Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah reveal weaknesses in Iran’s ‘Axis of Resistance’

Within weeks, Israel has delivered devastating blows to Iran’s main proxy, Hezbollah. Air strikes continued over the weekend, destroying several weapons depots. And on Saturday, Israel announced that its forces had killed Hezbollah’s powerful and longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

Earlier this month, Israel also sabotaged the group’s communications and eliminated several senior figures.

For Iran, Hezbollah should be the cornerstone of its strategy to outflank superior opponents like Israel with armed proxies. In addition to Hezbollah, Iran equipped groups in Gaza, Iraq, Syria and Yemen with an arsenal of rockets and missiles in the hope of steadily weakening Israel and the United States

But Iran’s strategy, dubbed the “Axis of Resistance,” underestimated how Israel would respond to the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack and Hezbollah’s subsequent cross-border rocket fire. Tehran also overestimated the strength of its proxy network, former intelligence officers and counterterrorism analysts said.

“Essentially their entire calculation is in smithereens,” said terrorism expert Bruce Hoffman. “For Israel, this is a stunning turnaround from the events of almost a year ago.”

Israel’s recent attacks have not only exposed the weaknesses of Iran’s proxy strategy; It has also presented Tehran and Hezbollah with a vexing question. How – and when – should they strike back as promised without suffering further setbacks?

Politics in brief

On the campaign trail: After a slow start this summer, it’s former President Donald Trump “Double-timing” his campaign plan. At a rally yesterday in Pennsylvania, he said accused personal attacks at Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her “mentally disabled” and suggesting she should be “prosecuted” for her actions related to the southern border. Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride is, in a word, a nerd. She says random little things. Within the first 60 seconds of meeting her, she told me that the ballroom of the Hotel Du Pont in downtown Wilmington, where I was staying, was the site of Joe Biden’s election night party when he won his first Senate race in 1972 won. She has a poster of Lizzie McGuire’s cartoon alter ego at her campaign headquarters because the film’s theme song, “What Dreams Are Made Of,” “has been stuck in my head for 20 years straight.”

She has a strong chance of winning Delaware’s only House seat in November, and if she does, she will become the country’s first openly transgender member of Congress. However, McBride doesn’t talk much about her potential historic premiere. Rather, she wants to bring about real change in a “dysfunctional” Congress. Those closest to her believe she can.
