WASHINGTON – NASA is downplaying concerns raised in a recent report about a long-standing air leak in the Russian segment of the International Space Station, saying it has recently reduced the leak rate.

A report released Sept. 26 by NASA’s Office of Inspector General said the ISS program in June classified a leak in a section of Russia’s Zvezda module “at the highest risk level in its risk management system.” NASA uses a system that rates both the likelihood and severity of a risk on a scale of one to five; The leak was rated a five in both cases.

That assessment came after NASA reported that the leak increased in February in an antechamber of the service module known as PrK, which separates a docking port from the rest of the module. The leak was first discovered in 2019 but had recently doubled. By April, the OIG report said the leak had grown to nearly 1.7 kilograms per day, the highest rate ever recorded.

At a Sept. 27 briefing before the launch of the Crew 9 mission to the ISS, NASA officials said there had been progress in reducing the leak rate. Robyn Gatens, director of the ISS program at NASA Headquarters, said recent repair work had reduced the leak rate by about a third.

“We will continue to work with them to understand the causes of the leak and how they affect the operations of the space station,” Jim Free, NASA’s associate administrator, said of working with Roscosmos to investigate the leak.

The root cause of the leaks remains under investigation, but “both agencies have narrowed their focus to internal and external welds,” the OIG report said, adding that similar leaks were not found anywhere else on the station.

Station staff keep the hatch to the PrK closed when not in use to mitigate the impact of the leak. If the leak gets worse, a long-term solution would be to close the hatch permanently. However, this would deprive the station of a docking port used by the Progress and Soyuz spacecraft.

“According to NASA, Roscosmos is confident that they will be able to monitor and close the hatch to the service module before the leak rate reaches an unsustainable level,” the report said. “However, NASA and Roscosmos have not reached agreement on the point at which the leak rate becomes unsustainable.”

According to the OIG report, the PrK leak was one of several challenges NASA faced in keeping the ISS operational through the end of the decade. It also cited potential supply chain problems in sourcing spare parts for ISS repairs, ongoing problems certifying Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner to provide redundant crew transport capacity, and growing risks from debris in orbit.

The report also identified problems with the end of the ISS itself. NASA awarded SpaceX a contract in June to develop a deorbit vehicle for the ISS based on the company’s Dragon spacecraft. The deorbit vehicle will provide the final push for a controlled re-entry into the station and will target a 2,000 kilometer long corridor in the open ocean.

However, the report says that the development of this deorbit vehicle involves budget and schedule risks that raise doubts that it will be ready by the end of the decade. It was noted that the current schedule calls for the launch of the deorbit vehicle five and a half years after the contract award, while the average time for major NASA space programs from award to launch is eight and a half years. According to OIG, NASA hopes that using a derivative of the existing Dragon spacecraft will shorten this timeline.

OIG also stated that the deorbit plans also assume that Russia will remain involved in the station and contribute two Progress vehicles. Roscosmos has agreed to cooperate on the ISS only until 2028, which officials said was previously linked to Russia’s policy of extending the station for four-year periods. NASA officials told OIG that they expect discussions with Roscosmos on deorbit plans to intensify in 2025 and 2026.

“However, without Russia’s commitment to the current deorbit plan, the ability to conduct controlled deorbit is unclear,” the report warned.

Grant Cardone, a popular real estate investor and private equity fund manager, has been uploading entrepreneurial videos and monetized advertising to Google-owned YouTube since 2007.

In a now-viral Instagram Reel posted earlier this month, Cardone explained how his 10X Studios account had uploaded an original 10X brand advertisement when an automated Google check revealed the video was due to “election advertising.” “was not eligible for monetization” until Cardone allegedly changed the title and thumbnail of a video to show Kamala Harris. Cardone added: “For the record, I am not affiliated with this [Trump] Campaign. I am a free American who cares about the development of our country. And I think Donald Trump is the best choice for what’s going on in our country right now, especially with our economy.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Google spokesperson said “this issue was resolved weeks ago” and that the election ad verification process is required for any advertiser who wants to run ads that reference or contain images of political candidates.

“Under our policies, both ads should have been rejected because the advertiser did not complete our election advertising verification process. The second ad was originally approved in error and has since been blocked. “Stay out of my business and let me express my politics and my political opinions the way I want,” he said. “We try to give people great jobs and great opportunities, and our companies help Americans make money right. We do this without government funding… I want to spend money on your business. Don’t punish me. And if you want to punish me, just tell me you don’t want my money.

Recent experiences on the YouTube and Google Ads platforms have “100%” prompted Cardone and his 10X brands to consider posting exclusively on free-speech-friendly sites like Rumble and now X, led by Elon Musk.

“We are receiving more positive support from Americans who believe in freedom and freedom of speech than ever before,” Cardone said.

“While some Americans tend to shy away from it because it hurts them for a second, it seems to us that our customer base is expanding and almost becoming zealots, if you will, to support those people who are willing to to stand up and have a voice despite the potential strain on their company.”

When applying, students often feel the pressure to stand out and do everything they can to secure a place at a top university. By using Early Decision (ED), students can increase their chances of being admitted. However, an ED application requires a commitment from the student. If you are admitted, you are obliged to participate and therefore cannot compare with other admissions or funding offers.

Considering the pros and cons of using ED is a crucial part of a student’s individual strategy. Whether a student wants to increase their chances of admission or see how early decision affects financial aid, this article is about whether ED is a smart choice for them.

Advantages of an early decision

Increased chances of acceptance

Because of the binding commitment, early decision applicants typically have a higher acceptance rate compared to early decision and regular decision applicants. For example, Brown University’s acceptance rate for the class of 2028 was 3.8% for regular decision applicants, compared to 14.38% for its ED applicants. At Amherst College, the overall acceptance rate was 10%, compared to a 27% acceptance rate for ED applicants.

They enrolled approximately 505 students for the fall 2023 admissions course at Bates College, 338 of whom were accepted via Early Decision. Northwestern University enrolled 2,111 freshmen in the 2023-2024 academic year. However, 1,174 of these students applied through early decision. Fortunately, one of the exceptions to withdrawing an ED application is a lack of financial support. Students may have expected to receive a certain amount and if they do not receive this, they may decline their acceptance. However, they should first speak with the college and its financial aid office to see if they can work together to get further help. While students may think this is a recurring problem, it’s not as common an issue as they might think: Duke University reported that less than 1% of its ED offers were rejected for financial reasons.

High school students’ interests and career goals are still evolving, and things can change between the time the student applies to their ED school and receives admission. Students may find that their previous dream school no longer aligns with their current goals.
