The smart ring category is hot right now, but is Apple ready to get in on the action on its own?

In the last few months we’ve seen the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Ring and the RingConn Smart Ring, while the Oura Ring (now in its third generation) is the long-standing frontrunner in the race for the best smart rings. Rumors that Apple might be tempted to join the party have been circulating for a few years now, and it appears that Apple is at least somewhat in the planning stages of this form factor.

Here we have compiled everything we know and think we know about the so-called Apple Ring: the leaks and rumors that have surfaced, the predicted price, the possible release date and more. We’ve also added some of the features and specs we’d like to see from the Apple Ring.

We don’t have much indication of how much the Apple Ring might cost, but we can take a look at some of the other options on the market. The Samsung Galaxy Ring is available for $399 / ÂŁ399 and up (Australian pricing is yet to be confirmed), while the Oura Ring 3 is available for $299 / ÂŁ299 and up (and is not currently available in Australia).

That gives you an idea of ​​the price points we’re talking about. Apple wants to stay competitive, but (as its best iPhones show) it’s not afraid to put a price premium on its products. If we had to guess, we’d say the Apple Ring will be slightly more expensive than its competitors from Samsung and Oura.

Also keep in mind that the best Oura Ring features require a monthly subscription ($5.99 / ÂŁ5.99 per month). Apple already has the Fitness Plus program that you can sign up for if you own an Apple Watch ($9.99 / ÂŁ9.99 / AU$14.99 per month). When it comes to a release date, 2024 and even 2025 seem unlikely given the frequency of leaks and rumors we’ve seen so far; It doesn’t appear that a launch is imminent. We didn’t see an Apple Ring alongside the Apple Watch 10 at the It’s Glowtime event in September 2024, but there’s a chance it could join the Apple Watch 11 in September 2025 if the device shows up as expected.

The Apple Ring rumors go back a long way, at least to 2020. A patent filed by Apple this year showed that a smart ring would be used to control other devices – with the idea that you could potentially control the channels on your Apple TV could switch by tapping your ring. Of course, patents aren’t always a guarantee of future products, but they show what companies are thinking about and researching.

In 2023, Apple again filed smart ring patents that positioned its potential device as a type of controller for other devices. It seems that each Apple Ring that appears will not only focus on health and fitness, but will also give you new ways to control features on your other Apple devices.

It seems that Apple isn’t limiting itself to finger-mounted wearables either. Another patent from 2023 revealed plans for a type of apple anklet that could be worn around the ankle or around the neck. The success of the Apple Watch is obviously causing Apple to think about how you can track more fitness metrics.

Meanwhile, an industry report out of South Korea suggested in early 2024 that an Apple smart ring was on the way to take on the likes of Samsung and Oura. However, since nothing has emerged in the past few months, either the report’s sources were mistaken or Apple has changed its mind about the future product launch schedule.

We saw another sign that an Apple Ring could be on the way: an Apple survey sent to Apple Watch owners asking how many of them currently wear a smart ring alongside their smartwatch. It may be a bit of a stretch to use this as evidence of an Apple Ring, but it’s not nothing.

And that’s it for the Apple Ring rumors – no hint of pricing, specs, design or anything like that. The lack of details in the rumors suggests that a release could still be some way off, although there was enough excitement at this point to suggest that it is at least being considered.

If an Apple Ring is indeed on the way, what will it look like – and how might it beat existing models? If Apple engineers are reading this, here’s what we want from an Apple Smart Ring.

1. Excellent battery life

Of course, this shows up on every wish list for every device, but decent battery life is a must – especially since the standard Apple Watch won’t last more than a day or two without a charge. In fact, that could be a major selling point for the Apple Ring: continue to track your steps and other activities while your Apple Watch is charging.

2. Premium sleep tracking

Speaking of charging the Apple Watch, many users charge their watch overnight. This means that the smartwatch often cannot be used for sleep tracking, and we hope the Apple Ring can do this very well. In addition, due to its smaller size and lighter weight, a smart ring is better suited for tracking movements while you sleep.

3. Lots of software features without a subscription

We’ve already mentioned Apple Fitness Plus, but we hope that many of the features of an Apple Ring are available without a subscription – like with the Apple Watch. 4. A superior design

There are really only so many ways to design a smart ring, but we hope Apple gives the Apple Ring the same aesthetic flavor as shown on the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. We’re thinking about a super slim and super light form factor, a choice of different colors and a smart ring that is one of the most comfortable on the market.

5. Seamless integration of the Apple ecosystem

Apple usually does this perfectly, with iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches constantly getting new integrations and connections – so we’re hoping this extends to Apple Ring too. It’s unlikely that Apple wants the Smart Ring to replace the Apple Watch, and in fact it could be a useful screen for it (remember, Oura also has an Apple Watch app).

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was originally expected to miss two games with a calf strain. However, after sitting out just one game, he returned to practice this week and was listed as questionable for this weekend’s game against the New England Patriots.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Samuel plans to report for the Week 4 game.

The 49ers, coming off two straight losses, will look to improve their 1-2 record heading into Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium.

Samuel spoke to reporters this week and confirmed that his initial recovery timeline was in line with the team’s expectations.

“I mean, that was the case,” Samuel said. “But I came back feeling pretty good and we went to training the last two days feeling good, so we’ll just see how it goes.”

Samuel’s return gives the 49ers’ offense a much-needed boost, still without running back Christian McCaffrey, who is recovering from Achilles tendonitis.

San Francisco selected Samuel out of South Carolina in the second round (No. 36 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has recorded 13 receptions for 164 yards in two games this season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Kenneth Almendares hit the go-ahead 31-yard field goal with 52 seconds left to help Louisiana beat Wake Forest 41-38 on Saturday.

The game ended with Wake Forest’s Matthew Dennis attempting a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the game to tie the game, only to see the ball bounce off the left upright and bounce back downfield for a miss. That began the celebration for the Ragin’ Cajuns (3-1), with coach Michael Desormeaux leaning forward with his hands on his knees to process those stressful final moments.

Desormeaux was emotional afterward and his voice shook as he spoke to reporters about the win.

“For two years it just seemed like nothing was going our way,” he said, adding; “I just know that hard work pays off and it just felt good to see it happen for her.”

Almendares also hit a 50-yarder in the win, helping Louisiana hold on in a shootout in which they also lost four defensive players to targeted ejections. The game also featured Wake Forest’s top running back Demond Claiborne being forced off the field in the second quarter with a knee injury, only to briefly return in the third quarter to break off a 60-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 24-all. In what turned out to be his last play, he equalized.

Ben Wooldridge threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Ragin’ Cajuns, while Lance LeGendre had a career-high six catches for 123 yards and two scores. Wooldridge also scored on a keeper, while Bill Davis (95 yards) added his own trip to the end zone on the ground.

“You don’t come out and win a game like this against a good team if you don’t have great quarterback play,” Desormeaux said of Wooldridge. “We did it tonight and he’s really played like that all year for us.”

Hank Bachmeier threw for 254 yards and a score to give the Demon Deacons (1-3) the lead, while Tate Carney scored three 1-yard touchdowns – the last coming with 1:55 left – to tie the game at 38 .

“We just didn’t play well enough across the board,” Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. “We got off to a slow start offensively and defensively they had us on our heels the whole game.”

Louisiana: The Ragin’ Cajuns entered this game fresh off a home loss to Tulane and arrived in Winston-Salem looking to begin a stretch of four of five games played on the road. Louisiana earned its first win against a power conference opponent since defeating Iowa State in September 2020.

Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons had an open week after home losses to Virginia and top-ranked Mississippi. The offense moved the ball effectively in this game, but the defense struggled to stop them.

Claiborne appeared to be dealing with a serious injury when he was transported with a dislocated kneecap, according to the ACC Network broadcast. But after trainers attended to his left knee, Claiborne was able to get up and onto the cart under his own power. Then he returned to the sideline at the start of the second half, wearing a brace and jumping around to warm up.

Claiborne returned a kickoff before Wake Forest’s first possession of the third quarter, then got two runs before going into the end zone on a fourth-and-1 play down the right side with 8:19 left in the third quarter Capper turned out to be right on his day..

“His kneecap was kind of damaged and we were really concerned,” Clawson said. “They were able to adapt it. And then at halftime he felt good. … Then in the third and fourth quarters it just got sore and painful and he couldn’t continue.”

While theaters are struggling, many independent cinemas in Los Angeles are finding audiences

LOS ANGELES – On a hot summer evening, Miles Villalon stood in line outside the New Beverly Cinema hours before showtime.

The 36-year-old already had tickets to the 1976 Watergate double feature “All the President’s Men” and 1999’s “Dick.” But Villalon braved Los Angeles’ notorious rush hour traffic and secured a front row seat at the historic Quentin Theater Tarantino.

This level of commitment is routine for the Starbucks barista and aspiring filmmaker, who typically sees up to six films a week in theaters, almost exclusively at independent theaters in and around Los Angeles.

“I always say it feels like church,” he said. “When I go to AMC, I just sit there. And I can’t really experience that sense of community that we have here, where we all just worship at the celluloid altar.”

Streaming – and a pandemic – have radically changed cinema consumption, but Villalon is part of a growing number of mostly younger people contributing to a renaissance of L.A.’s independent theater scene. The city’s ongoing, if limited, role as a film industry mecca still shapes its residents and their entertainment preferences, often with new appreciation post-pandemic.

A revival in the City of Angels

Part of what makes the city unique is its abundance of historic theaters, saved amid threatened closures or revived in recent years by theaters with ties to the film industry. Experts see a pattern of success for a certain type of theater experience in Los Angeles.

Kate Markham, chief executive of Art House Convergence, a coalition of independent cinema operators, said a key factor was the people who run these cinemas.

“They know their audience or potential audience and curate programs and an environment in which they can have an exceptional experience,” she wrote in an email.

Tarantino pioneered this trend when he purchased the New Beverly in 2007. After Netflix purchased and restored the nearby Egyptian Theater, which first opened as a silent film house in 1922, the company reopened it to the public in November in collaboration with the nonprofit American Cinematheque. It’s now a bustling meeting place, regularly hosting high-profile celebrities premiering their projects as well as film fans willing to endure hour-long marathons, such as the recent screening of four Paul Thomas Anderson films.

Further east is Vidiots. Vidiots, which existed as a video store in Santa Monica before closing in 2017, reopened citywide five years later with a 271-seat theater, a bar and new trailers.

“It’s literally my favorite place outside of my own comfortable home,” said filmmaker and actor Mark Duplass, who is backing “Vidiots” along with dozens of other well-known names, including Aubrey Plaza and Lily Collins.

What attracts people?

What draws people to independent theaters can vary, from older programming to upscale food and drink offerings to lower prices. But many agree that there is a community aspect in particular that chains cannot compete with.

“The larger places obviously have premium formats and the like. But I think there is much less community connection,” said Dr. Michael Hook, who attended a matinee of “Seven Samurai” at Vidiots with a colleague from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “You’re not just hanging around with people who also decided to watch a three-hour Japanese film from the 1950s.”

While the pandemic was a blow from which the box office has yet to recover, it also served as a wrench that made the theatrical landscape more viable for the streaming age, according to Janice O’Bryan, senior vice president of Comscore.

“COVID has sorted out some of the things that had to close anyway,” O’Bryan said of the more than 500 theaters that have closed nationwide. “I think it made everything healthier.”

The surviving theaters have found niches, sometimes consciously eschewing the chains’ 4DX, recliner and dining services.

“The kind of movies we show, the last thing I want is waiters walking around bringing things to people and hearing the scraping of cutlery on plates,” laughed Greg Laemmle, who runs Laemmle Theaters, an independent film stalwart, has been running cinema in Los Angeles for nearly a century.

But Laemmle recognizes the importance of giving audiences options beyond popcorn and soda, especially as an additional source of income. The enjoyment of food and drink can sometimes make the theater a unique destination.

“When I normally go to the movies, I arrive two minutes before the movie starts,” Duplass said. “I go to Vidiots about 45 minutes before the movie starts to get my chilled Junior Mints, have a drink at the bar and see some people. I’ll go through the video store.”

Not without challenges

Like the rest of the country, L.A. theaters have faced a number of pandemic-related challenges — some exacerbated by last summer’s strikes — including fewer films to show.

And not all theaters have found their Tarantino or Reitman. The closure of the legendary Cinerama Dome was a huge blow to the city’s cinema lovers. Although owned and operated by the ArcLight Cinemas chain following its closure in April 2021, the Dome was something of a singularity in Hollywood, a regular premiere location memorialized in the film, and a symbol of the city’s stature in the industry.

Its fate remains in limbo as there are reportedly delays in its planned reopening date, despite parent company Decurion Corporation, which could not be reached for comment, being granted a liquor license for the multiplex in July 2022.

The venues that have survived have often achieved this through some form of charity or aid, such as the $16 billion federal Shuttered Venue Operators grant program that Laemmle took advantage of during the pandemic. He said the June 2021 funds would be necessary assistance. However, a full recovery has been slow.

“It provided some stability. How much remains to be seen,” he said. “The water is still muddy.”

Only in Hollywood?

In some ways, this renaissance is limited to Los Angeles thanks to the city’s history, culture and abundance of theaters, admits Bryan Braunlich, executive director of the National Association of Theater Owners Cinema Foundation.

Tarantino, who declined an interview, is less likely to buy a dying revival house in Peoria, Illinois. However, that does not mean that this trend cannot have an impact there, argued Braunlich.

“Hollywood and filmmakers are saying, ‘Hey, movie theaters are important,'” he said. “There are great independent theater owners all over the country who are thriving. And I think they get a confidence boost and say, “Yeah, this is a great business. This is a great business to invest in. And we, as film nerds, aren’t the only ones who do this.”

Reflecting on his own introduction to cinema while growing up in the New Orleans suburbs, Duplass recalled a trip to Vidiots to see “Raising Arizona” with his parents.

“I realized I was the same age now as she was when we first saw it together in the cinema. And I got to hold my dad’s hand in the last scene as we cried,” he said. “We shared this film, but we also shared the passage of time at our favorite church, the movie theater.”

ï»żOn Saturday, Hezbollah confirmed that its leader Hassan Nasrallah was dead after Israel announced that he had been killed in an airstrike in Beirut on Friday.

His death marks an important moment in the recent history of the Middle East, but the long-term consequences are uncertain. It raises a key question: Do “beheading attacks” that kill the leaders of terrorist groups cripple them? The short answer is not really.

Israel should know from its own history that such attacks do not always result in the disabling of a militant group. In 2008, Israel killed Hezbollah military leader Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus, Syria, but the group only gained strength in the following years.

Four years earlier, Israel killed Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in an airstrike. Yet the group did not collapse and, nearly two decades later, still carried out the October 7 attacks in Israel, which killed about 1,200 Israelis in a single day.

Most recently, in July, Israel said it had killed one of the October 7 masterminds, Mohammed Deif, a key Hamas military commander, but the militant group continues to fight in Gaza.

The United States has a history of killing terrorist leaders in the hope of crippling its enemies. When Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a US bombing raid in 2006, it was considered a major breakthrough because al-Qaeda in Iraq contributed significantly to the civil war that was then shaking the country apart.

But eight years later, al-Qaeda in Iraq eventually morphed into ISIS, which occupied an area the size of Portugal and ruled over a population of about eight million people in Iraq and Syria. Still, his death had no lasting impact on Iran’s power and ambitions in the region, and Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis in Yemen continued their attacks on Israeli targets, and Shiite militias continued their attacks on American targets in Iraq.

The US has classified the Taliban, Houthis, Hamas, ISIS and Hezbollah as terrorist groups.

What can cripple a terrorist group is a sustained campaign aimed at eliminating as many of its leaders and middle managers as possible. A CIA drone campaign that expanded into Pakistan’s tribal regions bordering Afghanistan in 2008 killed many al-Qaeda leaders, according to New America, a research organization (of which I am vice president).

Documents recovered from the U.S. Navy SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in 2011 show that the al-Qaeda leader regularly wrote to his followers living in the country’s tribal regions, urging them to to move only on cloudy days when the… Drones were less effective.
