The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films. Joe Gow, who had served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should be retained in a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission. The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote. Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning. Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leaders became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites. The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making pornographic films and speaking publicly about them and for the questions it raises about free speech rights. Gow argued that his videos and two e-books he and his wife Carmen have published about their experiences in adult films are protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract. Zach Greenberg, an attorney at the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to…” academic freedom and the right to free speech.” “FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputation,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.” Republican lawmakers already view the Wisconsin university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget. Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said because Gow hasn’t taught in 20 years, he will be assigned general education courses, but she refuses to allow him to return to teaching in any role. Gow was criticized in 2018 for inviting porn actress Nina Hartley to give a talk on campus. She received $5,000 from tuition fees for her performance. He came up with the idea of bringing her to campus after filming a pornographic video with her, the university said. Gow and his wife’s e-books were written under the pseudonyms “Monogamy with Benefits: How Porn Enhances Our Relationships” and “Married with Benefits.” Our real-life adventures in the adult industry.” But they also star in a YouTube channel called “Sexy Healthy Cooking,” in which the couple cooks meals with porn actors.

Brentford – West Ham 1-1: What Thomas Frank said

Brentford – West Ham 1-1: What Thomas Frank said

Brentford coach Thomas Frank spoke to BBC Match of the Day about his side’s first-minute goal in their third league game in a row: “I can’t tell you that [the secret]. That has to be a world record, three games in a row under 40 seconds – that’s incredible.

“We had a plan again, it’s the attitude to play forward and try to get into the game straight away. I’m very happy with that.”

On Bryan Mbeumo’s great start to the season: “Bryan is on fire, there’s no doubt about it. He moved the team forward in many ways, scoring goals and creating chances.”

“I think he’s scored five goals now and he’s improving a lot.”

About the performance: “That’s a good point. I’m always disappointed when we don’t get three. We were the better team for 75 minutes.”

“West Ham were superior to us for 15 minutes at the start of the second half. Considering we have nine first-team players, we had nothing to shoot for.”

“I am optimistic for the future. If you can play like that against a good West Ham team, I’m confident it will work.”

“What I like about my team is the mentality. We kept going.”

Chelsea 4-2 Brighton: Will Fabian Hurzeler change his approach?

Chelsea 4-2 Brighton: Will Fabian Hurzeler change his approach?

After Georgino Rutter opened the scoring with his first Premier League goal, it was alarming how quickly Brighton fell apart at Stamford Bridge.

Not only did Cole Palmer score four goals in 20 minutes, Chelsea also had three goals disallowed and could easily have scored seven or eight goals.

Brighton’s high line has been caught out again and again and after his first defeat there is plenty for Fabian Hurzeler to think about.

The manager said: “It’s still a process and we need a good connection on the pitch and we didn’t have that connection today. It’s my job as a head coach to improve those things.”

“We have to find a good balance, we must not lose our structure as quickly as before. We all have something to learn, including me.”

With a total of 30 shots on goal, the game was really entertaining – and Brighton host Tottenham next. That should be tight…

The frontrunner Jannik Sinner was “surprised” by the appeal in the doping case

The frontrunner Jannik Sinner was “surprised” by the appeal in the doping case

ROME (AP) — Senior tennis player Jannik Sinner said he was “very disappointed and also surprised” after the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the decision to clear him of wrongdoing after two positive doping tests.

Montreal-based organization WADA said Saturday it is seeking a one- to two-year ban for the US Open champion, but said it has no plans to push back any ban – which would mean that Sinner could retain his second Grand Slam title even if he is found guilty.

The announcement came as Sinner was on court against Roman Safiullin at the China Open in Beijing.

“Of course I am very disappointed and, to be honest, surprised by this appeal because we had three hearings. “All three hearings were very positive for me,” said the 23-year-old Sinner after his victory over Safiullin.

“You know, I didn’t expect it. I knew a few days ago that they were going to appeal, that it would become official today, so… it’s a surprise,” the Italian added. “Maybe they just want to make sure everything is in the right position.”

Sinner tested positive for an anabolic steroid twice in March but was not banned in an independent tribunal decision announced last month by the International Tennis Integrity Agency as the ITIA found he was not at fault.

Sinner’s accepted explanation was that the banned performance enhancer entered his body inadvertently through a massage from his physiotherapist, who had treated his own cut finger with a spray containing the steroid.

WADA said it filed an appeal with the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday.

“WADA believes that the finding of ‘no fault or negligence’ was incorrect under the applicable rules,” WADA said in a statement. “WADA is aiming for a ban of between one and two years. WADA does not seek to annul any results except those already imposed by the trial court.”

WADA suspected the rules had not been followed correctly, even though prosecutor Nicolas Zbinden of the Tennis Integrity Authority – who accepted Sinner’s version of events – was a lawyer who regularly works on high-profile cases for the global watchdog, including the successful appeal against Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva.

“It is difficult to see the benefit of asking a different group of three judges to review the same facts and documents,” Sinner later said in a statement.

“With this in mind, I have nothing to hide and, as I have done all summer, I will cooperate fully in the appeal process and provide everything necessary to prove my innocence once again,” Sinner added.

An appeal decision to CAS could be issued quickly – even within a few months – if the parties agree to work together. At least that’s how it worked in another high-profile doping case in tennis involving Maria Sharapova.

Still, the case is unlikely to be resolved before Sinner begins defending his Australian Open title in January. Sinner can continue playing while the appeal is heard.

Sharapova tested positive for the newly banned heart drug meldonium at the Australian Open in January 2016. In June this year she was banned for two years by the International Tennis Federation.

The Russian star appealed to CAS, had an appeal hearing in front of three judges in New York in September and received the ruling four weeks later that reduced her ban to 15 months.

Sharapova’s entire process at CAS lasted just four months – much shorter than most doping cases, which typically last about a year. The schedule may be stalled due to the complexities of selecting a panel of judges, setting a hearing date, and exchanging documents and expert evidence between the parties.

During the Indian Wells hardcourt event in March, Sinner tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of Clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid that can be used for ophthalmic and dermatological purposes. It’s the same drug for which San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. was suspended by the MLB in 2022.

Eight days later, Sinner tested positive again in an out-of-competition sample.

As a result of these test results, he was twice provisionally suspended by the Tennis Integrity Authority, but twice successfully appealed to an independent judge and was allowed to continue competing on the tour.

Sinner said his test results were because his fitness trainer in Italy purchased an over-the-counter spray called Trofodermin that contained clostebol and gave it to Sinner’s physical therapist to treat a cut on the physical therapist’s finger. The physiotherapist then treated Sinner without gloves.

Sinner said the amount of the banned substance he tested for was “0.000000001.”

The ITIA said it accepted Sinner’s explanation after ten interviews with the player and those around him, and the independent panel agreed at a hearing on August 15.

The tennis integrity panel’s decision ordered Sinner to forfeit the $325,000 in prize money and the 400 ranking points he earned at the tournament in Indian Wells.

Sinner later announced that he had fired his two coaches.

“We have great confidence in (CAS), who should have the final say in this case,” said Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian tennis and padel federation. “I am sure that the WADA complaint will only have a positive impact. Because it will formalize his innocence.”

Teen makes pregnant sister-in-law cry after changing her ‘old-fashioned’ name

Teen makes pregnant sister-in-law cry after changing her ‘old-fashioned’ name

A teenager got into an argument with her pregnant sister-in-law that ended in tears after she decided to change her first name.

In a recent post on Reddit’s Am I the A——? On the forum, the 17-year-old explained that her 30-year-old brother is married to a 29-year-old woman named Hailey, who is currently pregnant with their baby. Last year, the teenager “officially” changed her name from Evelyn to Indie, a nickname form of her middle name. She said her parents approved of the decision.

“My parents relented when they realized how serious I was about being an indie and that I couldn’t befriend or grow into Evelyn,” the teenager wrote.

However, the name change didn’t go down well with her sister-in-law Hailey, who plans to give her baby an “older/vintage” name.

“Hailey asked me about five months ago why I didn’t like Evelyn enough to change the name. At the time, she mentioned how popular the name had become and that vintage had returned,” the teen continued. “I told her I don’t like vintage names and it sounded really old-fashioned to me. I told her that popularity didn’t influence my decision.”

“She wanted to know why I didn’t like older names and why I liked something like Indie instead,” she added. “I didn’t mind her asking that the first time.”

But that wasn’t the end of the discussion. The teen said Hailey repeatedly brought up the name change and each time she told her sister-in-law that her answer “wouldn’t change.”

“When she asked for the seventh time, she admitted that she was afraid her baby would hate an older name and wanted to find out what she could do to prevent what had happened to me from happening to her.” , the teenager wrote in her post. “She also said she wanted me to reconsider my name because she thinks Evelyn is beautiful and is sad that I chose something like Indie.”

The teenager became increasingly frustrated with the situation and even asked her brother to intervene and get Hailey to stop bringing up the name change issue – but as she detailed: “I can easily say that she has grown to like that to me more than asked 25 times – I” I’m not exaggerating.

When Hailey broached the subject again, telling her young sister-in-law that she had “made a mistake” and that her 30-year-old self was “not so against” the name Evelyn, the teenager “kind of lost my temper,” she remembers.

“I snapped and told her to stop asking me the same question because my answer wouldn’t change and her comments wouldn’t change my mind because I don’t like old-fashioned names,” she wrote. “I told her, just like she hates Indie, I hate Evelyn and she needs to let it go now.”

The exchange ended with Hailey crying and the teen angering her other family members. “[Hailey] burst into tears and my brother got so mad at me. “My parents also asked me why I had to talk to her so harshly,” she concluded her post, prompting other Reddit users to consider whether it was wrong to make Hailey cry after broaching the subject of the name change didn’t drop.

The teen’s post sparked more than 2,500 comments, with many people siding with the 17-year-old in the disagreement. Quite a few Reddit users argued that Hailey “disrespected” her sister-in-law’s identity.

“If someone continues to question your identity and doesn’t accept you as you are, and if they ignore your explanation and request to move on, then that is a bully and discriminatory,” one person wrote.

“She refused to accept your first answer, harassed you for months, disrespected your identity and disrespected the way your parents raised you to be independent and true to yourself and your identity,” chimed in another person one.

Another commenter added: “Your behavior is really strange. Why keep asking? And how does she feel about whether you choose Evelyn or Indie? This has nothing to do with her or her baby. I don’t understand why she’s so obsessed with your name.

Others praised the teenager for her remarkable patience and commiserated with her as she eventually reached her limits and lost her temper with her sister-in-law.

“You have been incredibly patient in putting up with it for so long, and your outburst is completely understandable. Of course you could have been less aggressive in your last answer, but she also could have stopped asking the same question more than 20 times before,” one person wrote.

“You have repeatedly shared your reasons for the name change and asked Hailey to stop questioning you. Her feelings and decisions regarding her name should be respected and her insistence on bringing it up has crossed a line,” another added.

Yet another person agreed: “You have every right to feel what you feel and to be called what you want to be called.”

The opportunity for Gopher football is here, when will the door open?

The opportunity for Gopher football is here, when will the door open?

I firmly believe that college football is difficult to coach. Winning is harder. Winning consistently is… well, I don’t know, I’ve never really experienced it as a Gophers fan. There is no formula that works, and even when it seems like things are going in the right direction, there are bumps in the road.

I’ve also had a front-row seat to the rise and fall of a handful of Gopher coaching staffs. All but one (sorry Tim, but there hasn’t been much debate about that) have gone through a period of great debate among fans about whether or not it’s time to move in a new direction.

This debate, for the first time with PJ Fleck, is rearing its ugly head within Gopher Nation. His team’s 2-2 start and home loss to Iowa last week left the faithful riled up.

Is it too early to seriously consider replacing PJ Fleck? Yes, I think it’s way too early.

The Minnesota program has been stuck in mediocrity or worse for decades. After finishing just one season under .500 (with the exception of his first season, affectionately referred to as Year Zero), I don’t think we have nearly the authority to fire coaches if they have two consecutive seasons close to finish 5-7 (should we call this “Mr. Frost’s Neighborhood”?).

Is it fair to be incredibly frustrated and ask difficult questions when the team has missed several opportunities to go a step above average over the last four or five seasons? Yes, absolutely.

Following Minnesota’s loss to Iowa, here’s what Fleck had to say:

“I love our team. I’m proud of the determination, but we didn’t play well in the second half. And if you don’t play well for 60 minutes, either on offense or defense or special teams, with really good teams and the Big Ten as it is, you get beat like that. Unacceptable, falls on me.”

He’s right. You’re going to get so beaten when you come out in the second half and get your ass kicked at the line of scrimmage. When you helplessly watch the game and notice that your defense is not making an effort to stop the opposing offense while your offense is unable to move the ball and score the points. He’s right, that falls to him.

Again, it’s entirely reasonable to be frustrated, not because of this particular game, but because a pattern is emerging under Fleck. Iowa’s second half was eerily similar to North Carolina’s second half. This isn’t specifically about second-half adjustments, but rather a style of play that focuses on not losing rather than finding ways to win.

Playing games where you reduce your chances of losing is a different philosophy than playing games where you try to increase your chances of winning.

The game of “not losing” has helped the program snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Examples are easy to find…

  • North Carolina 2024
  • Northwest 2023
  • Illinois 2023
  • Iowa 2022
  • Bowling Green 2021
  • Illinois 2021
  • Iowa 2019

And there were also many “near misses”. Miami (OH) in 2021, Fresno/SDSU/Georiga Southern/Purdue in 2020 are great examples.

Over the last two or more seasons (2022, 2023 and early 2024), the Gophers are 6-5 (10-6 if you include 2021) in Big Ten games in which they are the favored team. In games as underdogs, they are 2-6 and beat Wisconsin in 2022 and Iowa in 2023.

It’s been a full two seasons, with Minnesota hitting just over .500 in Big Ten games in which they are favored and winning just 25% of games as underdogs. The average point spread in games we favored was -8.5 and as an underdog it was +6.5. This team is always underperforming as favorites, which is what happens when you aim not to lose.

I understand the philosophy. Reduce risks, score points whenever you can, and do the little things you need to do to win the game. This is what Iowa does and has done well for years. The problem is that we make too many mistakes, we’ve been missing some key fundamentals the last few seasons, and we’ve struggled at the line of scrimmage and on special teams. The margin for error is very small.

We haven’t been able to do the little things well enough and the record shows it.

PJ Fleck has done a lot of great things here in his eighth season with the Gophers. There’s no denying that 2019 was an elite year. After the Covid season, he put together consecutive nine-win seasons. Technically, he has a Big Ten West championship. This program has excellent academic ratings, it has brought more players into the NFL than at any time in decades, and the foundation appears to be so high that a bad season results in a 5-7 record.

I believe that making a program like Minnesota a consistent winner is difficult and requires painful patience. These things really take time and improvements are not linear progress. But 2019 seems like a long time ago and there have been some big missed opportunities in recent seasons since then. At some point the time for talking will be over and this program will occasionally need to punch above its weight class rather than be surpassed.

Fleck ended his post-Iowa game press conference with this:

“Don’t give up on this team. This team has a lot of football left, I promise you, and we will give you everything we have in the future. We will learn from this second half, I promise, and we will correct that.”

Here too, the time to talk about it is over. The sarcastic calls to “change for the best” are over. The problem for Fleck is that apathy is creeping in and their next two opponents aren’t exactly in the same Big Ten league as them. The opportunity is there, will they open the door?

Is Costco’s new chicken packaging making people sick?

Is Costco’s new chicken packaging making people sick?

“The old containers were much better.”

Brooke Sjoberg

Posted September 28, 2024, 11:00 am CDT

Food safety is an important part of any retail store that offers ready-to-eat and hot foods.

But what happens when the storage method could have unintended consequences for customers?

A Costco shopper says he got sick multiple times after eating the wholesaler’s fried chicken.

In a video posted to TikTok that garnered over 583,000 views, nutritionist @thejacked.gentleman says he got sick twice after eating Costco’s packaged fried chicken.

He believes the chicken sitting in the plastic bag allows the bird to develop bacteria that will be transferred to it when consumed.

@thejacked.gentleman Costco “Chicken-in-a-Bag” made me sick twice the next day! I believe that if you let it cool on the counter before putting it in the fridge, bacteria will develop. The first day is fine, but after that I wouldn’t eat it again. #costco #costcobuys #costcochicken #foodpoisioning ♬ Original sound – TheJackedGentleman

“After I switched to chicken in a bag, I got sick twice,” he says in the video. “I don’t think it’s a problem on the first day. When you get it home, let it cool on the counter before putting it in the fridge. I think bacteria are developing.”

He continues: “In the old containers, the chicken used to stay above the juice and not just in the hot plastic juices laden with chemicals and bacteria. I don’t understand it anymore.”

The Daily Dot reached out to @thejacked.gentleman via TikTok direct message and Costco via a contact form about the video.

Has Costco changed its chicken packaging?

Yes. Earlier this year, Costco switched from using plastic clamshell packaging to thinner plastic bags for its fried chicken in an effort to reduce plastic usage and waste. Initially, customers complained that the bag was leaking and were concerned about not storing the bird in their refrigerators.

About the concerns

The poster’s summary that braising the chicken in its own juices might not be too far off. After customers reported leaks, Consumer Reports investigated whether the bags were safe. According to Consumer Reports, experts say that the leaking chicken liquid could itself become a breeding ground for bacteria if it gets onto a surface like a kitchen countertop.

There are also concerns that chemicals from the plastic bag packaging could leach into the chicken itself. Any type of heating over a long period of time can cause some plastic additives to leach into the packaged food and cause the plastic to decompose.

Viewers agree

Some who saw the video were quick to point out that there is plenty of opportunity for bacteria to grow in warm-prepared foods if stored improperly.

“Cooling on the counter allows bacteria to thrive,” one commenter wrote. “Straight into the fridge or an ice bath to cool down quickly.”

“In Australia… we’ve been eating chicken in a bag since I was a kid and I’m middle-aged,” another added. “It should also cool quickly…right in the fridge. They let it grow bacteria.”

“You don’t refrigerate on the counter, you take it out of the bag and put it in the fridge straight away,” said another.

Others shared that they also felt unwell after eating Costco rotisserie.

“No it’s the chicken, I felt sick the first time I tried it,” one commenter wrote. “Never had it again.”

“Wait, I got sick after eating the last Costco chicken I got so I haven’t bought any since,” one user reiterated. “I didn’t think it might just be the case.”

“To be honest, the last two times I also wondered if I had become ill. I thought it was just a coincidence and after watching this I’m even more convinced,” one commenter wrote.
