How Indonesia turns unknown footballers into revered superstars: “We couldn’t leave the hotel”

How Indonesia turns unknown footballers into revered superstars: “We couldn’t leave the hotel”

Maarten Paes is the starting goalkeeper for Major League Soccer team FC Dallas. Yet he can walk down a busy street in Dallas, Texas without anyone noticing him.

This is not the case online. Or in Indonesia.

Like his teammates on the Indonesian national team, Paes is mobbed on his visits to the country and has a huge social media following, far larger than you would expect from a player who has yet to trouble the highest echelons of football brought.

Paes, 26, was born in the Netherlands but took Indonesian citizenship in April and was shocked by the rapid growth of his social networks – he has 1.7 million followers on Instagram and 1.2 million on TikTok.

“You know it before it happens because you’ve seen it with other players. It’s such a huge country and everyone loves football,” says Paes.

The 26-year-old knew he would be eligible to play for Indonesia for a few years, but the team turned to him again late last year. “At this time, my grandmother’s health was deteriorating,” he says.

“She’s from there and I talked to her a lot about it. It was something I could do to make her smile at the end of her life. That was huge for me. She said, ‘I would really love it if you did that.’ So she encouraged me and it was an honor to do it for her.”

When it was announced that he was moving to Indonesia, his life changed. “That’s when I felt like I needed to relate to my social media in a different way where you can put it aside for a while because it can be a little overwhelming,” he says. “It’s surreal to suddenly have so many followers and such a large crowd adoring you.”

Paes, who represented the Netherlands at youth level, played his first two games for Indonesia during the recent break. He says the goalless draw against Australia, 109 places above Indonesia in the FIFA world rankings, in front of more than 70,000 fans at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium was an eye-opener.

“It was like I realized how big it was for the first time,” he says. “You see it on the internet, you see the numbers and you can’t really understand it. Then we couldn’t leave the hotel without security.”

Oxford United, which sits ninth in the Championship, England’s second division, rarely scores big on social media, but in August a video posted to Instagram reached 5.2 million views.

Australian A-League club Brisbane Roar also experienced a similarly strange spike in engagement on social channels this month. As in Oxford, videos posted on Instagram in Brisbane are typically viewed thousands of times. But back-to-back videos posted to Instagram earned Roar 4.5 million and 1.7 million views.

The explanation? You guessed it: the summer arrival of two Indonesian soccer superstars: national team youngsters Marselino Ferdinan and Rafael Struick.

Ferdinan is a 20-year-old attacking midfielder who moved to Oxford from Belgian second division club Deinze last month. Struick is a 21-year-old striker who moved to Brisbane (owned by Indonesian conglomerate Bakrie Group) this month from ADO Den Haag, the second tier of Dutch football.

They were neither a well-known name, at least in Europe or Australia, nor did they come from well-known clubs.

Within days of Ferdinan joining Oxford, her number of followers on Instagram grew from 83,000 to 226,000. Some of Brisbane’s previous posts received fewer than 10 replies. Struick’s announcement had 9,000.

This is the Indonesia effect. The country in Southeast Asia has a population of more than 280 million people and football is the No. 1 sport. Cue adoration for national players and fanaticism online and offline.

To illustrate this, below are some statistics compiled by The athlete to compare Indonesia’s starting XI to the US Men’s National Team starting XI – however, we do not look at expected goals or progressive passes. We compare Instagram followers.

Indonesia’s starting XI for the World Cup qualifier against Australia had a total Instagram following of 26.9 million. The 11 clubs they play for have a combined fan base of less than 10 million on the same app.

In comparison, the USMNT’s final starting XI in the friendly against New Zealand had a combined fan base of just 1.4 million.

That number could have been higher, but Christian Pulisic, the AC Milan striker with 7.8 million followers on Instagram, was on the bench.

What a comparison of the two starting XIs should highlight is the level of support for Indonesian players, for example, compared to a country of more than 335 million people that will host the men’s World Cup in 2026.

The only players in the starting lineup for Indonesia’s goalless draw with Australia who have fewer supporters than the club they play for are Rizky Ridho, who plays center back for Indonesian League 1 side Persija Jakarta, and Justin Hubner, who plays for the Wolverhampton Wanderers plays the Premier League.

The 21-year-old Hubner joined the Wolves youth team in 2020. He has yet to feature for the senior team and plays most of his games at academy level – but in the national team he is treated as if he were playing week in and week out for Real Madrid, that’s the fanfare he receives online and in person experienced.

“I can’t leave my hotel (in Indonesia) because people are waiting for me and running to me. Everywhere I go it’s crazy,” says Hubner The athlete. “If I go into a store and then leave, there might be 100 people waiting there. I’m their idol, so they wait for me, for pictures and autographs.”

More about the world of social media and football…

Hubner was born in the Netherlands and played on Dutch youth national teams alongside Xavi Simons (an Instagram star as a teenager with Barcelona, he had a million followers before the age of 14 and now plays for RB Leipzig). Since Indonesia was once a Dutch colony, more and more national team players have dual citizenship.

“I had maybe 5,000 followers on Instagram, and when fans realized I had Indonesian blood, that number went up to 30,000, and now I’m at 2.7 million,” Hubner says. “When it comes to social media, everything has grown so quickly. Everything from brand offers too. There’s so much coming up for me now. It’s a dream.”

The day before the interview with The athleteHis contract was concluded with the deodorant company Rexona. “A lot of teammates here at Wolves jokingly say: ‘Can I change my national team to Indonesia?’

“But the boys here support me and are happy for me. They also want followers because it’s nice to have them, but it’s not about followers. The important thing is that I play for the national team and what comes with that is really nice.”

Hubner was loaned out to Japanese club Cerezo Osaka last season and says there were always Indonesian fans there to watch him, but when he traveled back to England after the two World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Australia there was no welcome party like there would have been at Jakarta airport. He returned to his apartment alone and without the need for security.

“It’s a different world,” says Hubner about his quiet life in Wolverhampton. “When I come back to Europe, it’s like I’m living my own life, without stress. There is a crazy side to Indonesia. You have no privacy, wherever you go, there are always people recording you. It’s nice, but it’s also good to have your own space and privacy again.

“When I landed in Indonesia, I tried to hide with a cap and mask, but they recognized me immediately. Even the security service and the police wanted photos of me. There were 50 to 60 people there who wanted a picture. My family is also pretty famous now. I created an Instagram account for my mother and she has almost 50,000 followers. Everyone recognizes her. When she first traveled to Indonesia, she asked why people wanted photos with her.”

When fans meet Hubner, it’s not unusual for them to be overwhelmed with emotions. Some cried. His mother Brigitte has received direct messages from fans dreaming of marrying her son. The clubs try to use this star factor.

“Dallas noticed,” says goalkeeper Paes. “The club’s commitment has increased enormously. When I play for a club I want to help them as much as possible because they also help me a lot. My main focus is making sure the balls don’t go into the net, but I’m helping to build this club and raise awareness.”

Oxford, Ferdinan’s new club, is co-owned by Erick Thohir, an Indonesian businessman who helped them return to the second division after a 25-year break. Thohir was also appointed head of the Indonesian Football Association last year and is behind the drive to improve the national team, youth teams and overall football across Indonesia.

“The exciting thing about Marselino is that he is the best young Indonesian talent,” says Thohir. “He is 20, he played and trained in Belgium.

“We need to invest in young players at Oxford. He is young but has played more than 20 times for our national team, so the Oxford coach wants to give him a chance and that is the most important thing.

“If he brings more attention to Oxford that will be added value.

“We want to see an opportunity for all players who can play,” he added. “Let’s see if Marselino can survive in Oxford because we don’t offer a red carpet or VIP treatment. He has to keep up.”

“What you don’t address can haunt you”: Henderson students win best screenplay award at Charlotte Horror Film Festival

Published on Sunday, September 29, 2024, 12:05 am

SALISBURY – Henderson Independent School students found a creative outlet through an Art & Soul Rowan partnership and were recognized for their work at a Charlotte film festival.

The Mad Monster Film Festival came to an end last month and when the dust settled, a group of young filmmakers from the Salisbury-based school won best screenplay for their film The Horror of Trauma.

“The slogan is, ‘What you don’t address can haunt you,'” said Shane Manier, a creative coach, visual artist and trauma-informed care instructor who, among other things, serves as a spoken word and art instructor at Henderson.

“We work with the school throughout the year and run a poetry and art program where we work with the students. “It’s essentially about poetry and art mixed with personal development,” said Manier. “Through artistic expression, we explore identity, rewriting the narrative of your trauma, through critical thinking, anger management, conflict resolution, and social-emotional learning…The arts are a vehicle for them to explore these things.”

When Manier and her students embarked on this creative journey of discovery, the idea of submitting the film to a film festival was completely out of the question. Back then it was all about finding creative outlets.

“So we decided to make a movie … and I thought, ‘How about a horror movie?'” Manier said. “The whole class said ‘yes’.”

Manner pointed out that it was an all-hands-on-deck effort.

“We all helped write the script,” Manier said. “We all helped direct the film, the effects, everything.”

Manner said they had to shoot everything in the school.

“We ended up only having four weeks, an hour a week, and if you look at how long we were laughing and trying to get the shot, we actually only had about 30 minutes to shoot. for about four weeks,” Manier said. “We didn’t have much time at all. We had no budget, a crappy Rebel Canon camera and lots of sugar. And it just turned out so good, so funny, but also effective.”

What Manier witnessed with the students turned out to be remarkable.

“It was so much fun and it was so great to see students who didn’t really get along cheering each other on, which was really great,” Manier said.

So now they’ve had a movie, but what happens next?

Mad Monster is a horror convention in Charlotte that Manner has attended in the past. The convention has a film festival element and after some encouragement they decided to submit “Horror of Trauma.”

The students received tickets to the festival and were able to participate through collaboration with the Nazareth Children’s Home. Manier said they met some celebrities who were there and, among other things, attended a film forum at the convention.

Then came the awards. Of 27 films with five awards up for grabs, “Horror of Trauma” won the award for best screenplay. Manier said the support that has followed has been incredible.

“All the filmmakers have been so supportive,” she said. “The love they showed these students while they were there was just so beautiful. They were very committed. A lot of people came by to see the film during the festival and it was really cool for them to see that the world really appreciates us. These people don’t know us at all. They don’t know our history and thought that our creation was not only good enough to be at the festival, but also that people would come to it and then win an award.”

Manier pointed out that Henderson was a great partner.

“They gave us great, great support,” Manier said. “With this film, the principal was trying to reach out to the other students who are no longer at the school because they had to go back to their other schools, trying to get in touch with them so they could come to the festival and all that .”

Manier mentioned that the value the entire exercise brings to students at Henderson cannot be overstated.

“It completely changes the course of their lives and goes several levels deep,” Manier said. “So the first level is self-expression and exploration. If you have been told all these years that you are a bad child, you have abandonment issues and trauma.

“You’re in and out of the facilities when someone comes along and gives you tools to be able to process these difficult emotions without it being triggering and it’s like a way to express your body through art and poetry regulate; It’s just a big relief for them.”

Manier explained that in addition to the cathartic aspect, there is also a discovery aspect for the children, “where they say, ‘Oh wait, the way I see myself, that’s actually not me, these are my past experiences.'” Me I think that’s what the world told me and I don’t have to admit it to myself.”

Manier said this leads to a sense of ownership and the “ability to change the narrative of their story and really have agency in their own decisions” and “how they want their future to be.”

However, the benefits don’t stop there.

“They’re building new neural pathways in the brain because art and creativity do that, and we’re talking about how teenagers react, operating in a body that explodes when triggered. What the arts do is create new neural pathways that can take a break; You can do something other than lash out or explode. And so there’s really cool neuroscience in the brain too.”

This way their grades improve and they no longer get into trouble.

“We have had great success with the program,” Manier said. “We have already seen young people leave gangs and become successful. And I mean, it was great.”

Manier pointed out that success looks different for every student, whether they graduate or return to their original school.

“If they are allowed to return to their home school, that is a huge success,” Manier said, because it means the students’ behavioral problems have healed to the point where they can attend public school.

The success stories Manier has witnessed all look a little different, but as she said, each one deserves its own distinction. What lies ahead is unclear, but for now, Manier said she’s just excited about the next project.

Hoher Return on Investment (ROI)

Inhalte in Kurzform

Texas A&M vs. Missouri odds: Early point spreads released, How to Watch

Texas A&M vs. Missouri odds: Early point spreads released, How to Watch

The Texas A&M Aggies And Missouri Tigers are preparing for an exciting SEC conference duel in Week 6.

Ahead of the game, DraftKings Sportsbook released the early point spread for the game. Texas A&M will enter Kyle Field with a 1.5 point lead. The game total was set at 47.5 points.

When the first whistle blows, it will be an exciting game for both teams. Missouri enters the game at 4-0, while Texas A&M is 4-1 so far this season. Both Eli Drinkwitz And Mike Elko will be looking for a win to continue their program’s momentum.

Of course, in the end only one team can win. It will be a tremendous contest and one of the can’t-miss showdowns in Week 6, both within the SEC and across college football.

Here’s how to watch Texas A&M vs. Missouri

Time: Saturday, October 5th | Noon ET
Channel: ABC, FuboTV (streaming)
Location: Kyle Field – College Station, Texas

Additionally, Missouri is off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season for the first time since joining the SEC. The Tigers are ranked No. 11 in the country and according to ESPN, they returned 73% of their performance from last year, in which they won 11 games while recording their first-ever New Year’s Six bowl victory.

Head coach Eli Drinkwitz, the 2023 SEC Coach of the Year, joined The Paul Finebaum Show during the team’s bye week where he discussed his program’s recent breakthrough.

“Well, I think we’re accomplishing what we always dreamed of,” Drinkwitz said. “There is still a lot of work ahead of us. But I think it’s time to say, “Hey, we can accomplish what we thought we could accomplish by going to school here,” whether that was the dream we sold on [wide receiver] Luther Burden or the vision that I had when we took this job or the vision that I conveyed to the staff and administration about investing in us and the reasons for it.

“I think it’s a proud moment for the state of Missouri. There’s great football at the college level, and then there’s great football at the NFL level. So I think the 6.5 million people of the state of Missouri can all get behind us and the Chiefs now. And that’s a great thing.”

Unfortunately, it’s easy to see why Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers have become so exciting for the entire state of Missouri. Time will tell how long they can sustain their run, but it’s clear the program has great confidence going forward.

All Blacks v Australia: Will Jordan gets Scott Robertson’s stamp of approval as first-choice defender

All Blacks v Australia: Will Jordan gets Scott Robertson’s stamp of approval as first-choice defender

First he missed the 2-0 series win against England and the win over Fiji in San Diego. When he finally returned, he was placed on the wing rather than his preferred spot at the back.

Only the need for change following the loss to South Africa in Johannesburg convinced Robertson to roll the dice in Cape Town, having mostly relied on Beauden Barrett at full-back.

And while that move didn’t stop the All Blacks from losing the Freedom Cup, Barrett’s illness in Sydney gave Jordan another chance – which he was happy to seize with both hands.

AdvertisingAdvertise with NZME.

When the All Blacks ended their winning streak in the capital in Wellington, Jordan was once again on top. Since 2019, the All Blacks’ full-back spot has shifted from the traditional number 15 role to a secondary playmaker in support of the front five.

Sir Steve Hansen’s system, which saw Barrett move to full-back to accommodate Richie Mo’unga, was largely continued by Ian Foster after Jordie Barrett was deemed best suited in midfield.

But in Wellington, Jordan was a reminder of what a full-back who wants to run first can do. Aside from one attempt, Jordan ran 162 yards with the ball in hand. The next best score of any player on either side was 90 from Caleb Clarke.

And even if his striking game is significantly worse compared to a Barrett or McKenzie, he is probably the All Blacks’ deadliest asset with the ball in his hand.

“He created a lot,” Robertson said. “When he gets the ball in his hands, his angle changes, his stride, he had a lot of players [beaten] with the way he moved his feet.

“I’m really happy for Will. He owned it and took advantage of his opportunities.”

In this day and age, Jordan won’t have a complete stranglehold on the full-back position as long as European teams have an aerial burst game that the All Blacks need to keep up with.

But as opponents look to beat the All Blacks at their own game, Jordan will undoubtedly be the man Robertson trusts most.

Playing at full-back will also open up another opportunity for Jordan, giving him the chance to become the All Blacks’ top scorer, if not all Test rugby scorers.

His result against the Wallabies in Wellington increased Jordan’s record to 35 tries in 37 Tests, simplified to one try every 0.95 games.

Doug Howlett holds the record for most tries for the All Blacks (49 in 62 Tests). And while Jordan’s rate of averaging one try per Test has fallen under Ian Foster, he has more than enough time on his side to overtake not only Howlett but also Japan’s Daisuke Ohata (69 in 58 Tests).

“He has a good success rate,” said captain Scott Barrett. “I guess there’s still a long way to go.

“He knows where the line is,” Robertson joked.

CHENEY, Wash. (AP) — Logan Fife threw five touchdown passes and Montana held off Eastern Washington 52-49 in a wild finish Saturday night in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.

Soren McKee’s subsequent onside kick bounced out of bounds. The Eagles successfully recovered an onside kick earlier in the game.

It was Montana’s first victory on the red turf in Eastern Washington, which was created in 2010. Montana leads the series 31-18-1 and was 11-11 in games played at Cheney, 0-6 on the red surface.

Ah Yat set the single-game program record for quarterbacks with four rushing touchdowns against the Catamounts and didn’t hold back against Eastern Washington.

‘SNL’ Unveils Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff, Dana Carvey as Joe Biden in Cold Open Starring Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris

‘SNL’ Unveils Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff, Dana Carvey as Joe Biden in Cold Open Starring Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris

The question of who would play Tim Walz and Doug Emhoff on “Saturday Night Live” was immediately answered Saturday night as the sketch comedy series kicked off its 50th season.

Jim Gaffigan joined Maya Rudolph in the season premiere’s cold open as the affable governor of Minnesota and vice president of Harris, while Andy Samberg appeared as the second gentleman. Dana Carvey also debuted his Joe Biden impression on “SNL.”

More of diversity

“SNL” actor James Austin Johnson returned as Donald Trump and Bowen Yang stepped in as his running mate JD Vance. Andrew Dismukes played journalist David Muir and joked that the ABC News debate was “biased against the Democrats, who…well.”

In the sketch, Rudolph brought back America’s “Fun Aunt,” also known as “Funt.” “The funt has been restarted,” said Rudolph. “2 Funt, 2 Furious.” As Walz, Gaffigan quipped, “There’s a saying in Minnesota: ‘Mind your damn business.’ There is also another saying in Minnesota: “My nuts are frozen to the park bench.”

As Emhoff, Samberg considered himself a “second gentleman” and joked about the White House’s Christmas decorations: “The theme is Hanukkah.”

Playing a stuttering, confused Biden, Carvey quipped, “A lot of people forget I’m president. Even me!” After Rudolph thanked “J’Biden” for “putting the country first and handing over the reins.” Carvey said, “I didn’t want that!” They made me.”

Shortly after Harris announced Walz as her running mate, people began dream casting the role on “SNL.” While Gaffigan and Steve Martin were two of the most repeated names, Martin said in an interview that “SNL” boss Lorne Michaels called him with an offer to play Walz on the show. Martin declined: “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. “You need someone who can really nail the guy. “I was chosen because I have gray hair and glasses.”

Emhoff was previously portrayed by Martin Short in a 2021 Passover-themed sketch. In an August 2024 Esquire article, Emhoff said that “SNL” needed a “good Doug character” in the run-up to the election. “I think of Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Chris Hemsworth. “You know, people who look just like me,” he joked.

Samberg was a cast member on “SNL” from 2005 to 2012, but has not appeared on the show since 2018. (He moderated only once after his term, in 2014.)

Rudolph’s return to “Saturday Night Live” as Vice President Harris was announced in July, just a week after she announced her candidacy for the presidency after Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Rudolph first played Harris on “SNL” in December 2019, winning the Emmy for guest actress in a comedy series despite only having a few lines in a presidential debate skit. She returned during the 2020 election cycle to play Harris opposite Jim Carrey’s Biden.

Rudolph was a main cast member on “SNL” from 2000 to 2007 and played Harris again when she hosted the series in March 2021, which earned her another Emmy for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. (She was nominated again for her final guest appearance as a presenter on May 11, 2024.)

Rudolph explained how she created her version of Harris within her diversity Cover story in September. “I said, ‘When I see her, I see she’s having fun,'” she said. “And so the fictional Kamala we created took advantage of her fun. And then [‘SNL’ producer] Steve Higgins said to me that his wife called her a “funny aunt,” and we laughed at how that sounded like “funny.” We just moved on from there. That was the moment when you realized, ‘Oh, now I know how to do this.'”

“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its 50th season on September 28th with host Jean Smart and musical guest Jelly Roll. The legendary sketch comedy series celebrates its big anniversary with a live primetime special on February 16th. The series airs at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and streams on Peacock.
