Jewish University of Pittsburgh student attacked by group

Jewish University of Pittsburgh student attacked by group

A Jewish student at the University of Pittsburgh was attacked on Saturday for the second time in a month in what may have been an anti-Semitic hate crime, according to several US news sites and police.

The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. Friday, is being investigated separately by the FBI and the University of Pittsburgh Police, NBC reported. Police classified it as a hate crime/hate assault.

According to police reports, the unidentified student was leaving the university campus when a group of six to eight men attacked him.

According to Chabad of Pitt, the student was wearing a Star of David necklace.

The victim told police that when the group saw his necklace, they “hurt insults about Israel” and at least three of them punched and kicked him, according to CBS and Chabad.

“The actors used anti-Semitic language,” University of Pittsburgh Police said in a news release. “A bystander intervened and stopped the attack.”

The victim reportedly suffered a bruised lip.

University police released a campus security alert following the attack, as well as details of three of the suspects, whom they described as men between the ages of 20 and 24. The three weighed between 170 and 200 pounds, and two were over 6 feet tall.

The FBI is investigating the attack to determine whether it is a federal hate crime.

Responses from universities and Jewish groups

In a statement Friday, the University of Pittsburgh said it “unequivocally condemns anti-Semitism.”

“Any violence or anti-Semitic acts against our community will not be tolerated, regardless of who it comes from or against whom it is directed. Hate of any kind has no place in our community.”

Shawn Brokos, community safety director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, said the incident was “very disheartening to learn about.”

“Our Jewish students need to feel safe moving around on or off campus.”

Chabad at Pitt Rabbi Shmuli Rothstein said, “Seeing someone’s religion shouldn’t trigger something in you that beats the crap out of them.”

“There is despicable hate on Pitt’s campus,” he wrote on Instagram.

Jeffrey Finkelstein, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, said: “Anti-Semitic attacks are completely unacceptable and we will do everything we can to create a safe environment for Jewish citizens throughout the Pittsburgh area.”

Previous attack on Jewish students

In an earlier incident on August 29, two Jewish students were attacked with a glass bottle by a man named Jarrett Buba.

Buba was charged with two counts of simple assault and two counts of aggravated assault.

Two of the students received medical attention at the scene after being hit by the bottle. The suspect behind the attack was arrested by Pittsburgh police, and the university said the suspect was unrelated to the institution of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of harassment and one count of resisting arrest.

Jerusalem Post staff contributed to this report.

Canadian Isabelle Harris wins judo bronze at the European Open in Prague

Canadian Isabelle Harris wins judo bronze at the European Open in Prague

Isabelle Harris of Abbotsford, B.C., won a bronze medal at the European Open Judo competition on Saturday.

The 23-year-old scored an ippon, or full point, against Italy’s Antonietta Palumbo in a women’s 63-kilogram marathon that went more than six minutes into overtime.

Harris was also a bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Her teammate Yanis Hachemi of Repentigny, Que., lost to Niels Thijssen of the Netherlands in his men’s 73-kg bronze medal bout. The Canadian lost his sixth game of the day via ippon in overtime.

“Both bronze medal finals were very close, but Isabelle’s final was the closest of the two,” Canadian coach Antoine Bouchard said in a statement on Saturday.

During the women’s bronze bout, Harris and Palumbo each received two penalties, and a third on either side would have ended the game.

“Both had good chances to throw the other,” Bouchard said. “Isabelle managed to counter one of them [her opponent’s] attacks and she scored a big ippon. There was a lot at stake in this fight.

“She achieved some great results last year, particularly at the Pan American Games. And it’s important to note that she had to miss almost two months last summer due to injury and only started training again just under a month ago.”

Kirby Smart is completely impressed by Alabama’s young prodigy

Kirby Smart is completely impressed by Alabama’s young prodigy

The magic of Ryan Williams has enchanted everyone; Georgia’s Kirby Smart included.

Despite being a longtime rival at heart, Kirby Smart didn’t let his pride get in the way of recognizing some truly outstanding Alabama talent.

Although he knows all too well that this talent will be the one they face in the epic rivalry battle this Saturday, Smart pushed that concern aside as he praised the standout freshman WR.

“I don’t think he’s very scared or nervous.” Smart said of Williams off Alabama-Georgia. “He’s not one of those people who thinks the moment is too big for him. He naturally jumped right in and made good plays in every game.”

“They have a lot of really good players off the edge, and I think Jalen uses his skills well to get them the ball,” Smart concluded, appreciating how the QB and WR do their jobs in perfect sync.

Kirby Smart believes Williams will restore Alabama’s elite WR reputation

Smart also believed Williams would help restore Alabama’s reputation of having the best WR room.

“He’s in line with the guys they’ve had in the past,” Smart said. “Super fast, talented, confident with the ball, great ball skills, great speed.”

“He’s a track and field athlete who was among the elite as a junior, and then he comes out and is already performing at his best.”

However, Smart puts Williams in the same circle as DeVonta Smith and Julio Jones – the Bama alumni who are now the NFL’s top receivers.

Since leaving Bama, there has been a lack of such top talent. Williams has high expectations of becoming Alabama’s receiver talent.

Since the WR has already amassed 285 receiving yards and 10 catches with four touchdowns in just three games this season, there are high expectations for him.

Will all of this be too much for a rookie who is only 17 years old to destroy the WR? Or is it the strengthening of his wings that allows him to fly higher?

The answer will be shown in full on Saturday evening.

Is Costco’s new chicken packaging making people sick?

Is Costco’s new chicken packaging making people sick?

“The old containers were much better.”

Brooke Sjoberg

Posted September 28, 2024, 11:00 am CDT

Food safety is an important part of any retail store that offers ready-to-eat and hot foods.

But what happens when the storage method could have unintended consequences for customers?

A Costco shopper says he got sick multiple times after eating the wholesaler’s fried chicken.

In a video posted to TikTok that garnered over 583,000 views, nutritionist @thejacked.gentleman says he got sick twice after eating Costco’s packaged fried chicken.

He believes the chicken sitting in the plastic bag allows the bird to develop bacteria that will be transferred to it when consumed.

@thejacked.gentleman Costco “Chicken-in-a-Bag” made me sick twice the next day! I believe that if you let it cool on the counter before putting it in the fridge, bacteria will develop. The first day is fine, but after that I wouldn’t eat it again. #costco #costcobuys #costcochicken #foodpoisioning ♬ Original sound – TheJackedGentleman

“After I switched to chicken in a bag, I got sick twice,” he says in the video. “I don’t think it’s a problem on the first day. When you get it home, let it cool on the counter before putting it in the fridge. I think bacteria are developing.”

He continues: “In the old containers, the chicken used to stay above the juice and not just in the hot plastic juices laden with chemicals and bacteria. I don’t understand it anymore.”

The Daily Dot reached out to @thejacked.gentleman via TikTok direct message and Costco via a contact form about the video.

Has Costco changed its chicken packaging?

Yes. Earlier this year, Costco switched from using plastic clamshell packaging to thinner plastic bags for its fried chicken in an effort to reduce plastic usage and waste. Initially, customers complained that the bag was leaking and were concerned about not storing the bird in their refrigerators.

About the concerns

The poster’s summary that braising the chicken in its own juices might not be too far off. After customers reported leaks, Consumer Reports investigated whether the bags were safe. According to Consumer Reports, experts say that the leaking chicken liquid could itself become a breeding ground for bacteria if it gets onto a surface like a kitchen countertop.

There are also concerns that chemicals from the plastic bag packaging could leach into the chicken itself. Any type of heating over a long period of time can cause some plastic additives to leach into the packaged food and cause the plastic to decompose.

Viewers agree

Some who saw the video were quick to point out that there is plenty of opportunity for bacteria to grow in warm-prepared foods if stored improperly.

“Cooling on the counter allows bacteria to thrive,” one commenter wrote. “Straight into the fridge or an ice bath to cool down quickly.”

“In Australia… we’ve been eating chicken in a bag since I was a kid and I’m middle-aged,” another added. “It should also cool quickly…right in the fridge. They let it grow bacteria.”

“You don’t refrigerate on the counter, you take it out of the bag and put it in the fridge straight away,” said another.

Others shared that they also felt unwell after eating Costco rotisserie.

“No it’s the chicken, I felt sick the first time I tried it,” one commenter wrote. “Never had it again.”

“Wait, I got sick after eating the last Costco chicken I got so I haven’t bought any since,” one user reiterated. “I didn’t think it might just be the case.”

“To be honest, the last two times I also wondered if I had become ill. I thought it was just a coincidence and after watching this I’m even more convinced,” one commenter wrote.

Arkansas finishes the Southwest Classic series as only they could

Arkansas finishes the Southwest Classic series as only they could

The series between Arkansas and Texas A&M at AT&T Stadium ended Saturday and the conclusion of the Southwest Classic in Arlington, Texas had a very fitting conclusion.

Before Saturday’s game, Texas A&M had won 11 of the 12 games in the series since permanently moving to Arlington in 2013. Arkansas had suffered many heartbreaking defeats over that 12-year span, and the Razorbacks ended up with a tear in the series in fitting fashion.

The game was a defensive slugfest and was tied 14-14 through three quarters before an Arkansas field goal just over a minute into the fourth quarter gave the team a 17-14 lead. The Texas A&M offense then woke up from its slumber and went for the go-ahead touchdown nine minutes before the end of regulation time.

After the teams traded punts, QB Taylen Green and the Arkansas offense had two minutes and 50 seconds to write their names in the history books.

However, in typical Arkansas fashion, Green fumbled the ball on their final possession, giving the No. 24 Aggies a 21-17 win and continuing HC Sam Pittman’s abysmal record in one-point games.

“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue for some articles through these links.”

She looked pretty in pink as she stepped out on Friday evening, sporting not only a shiny blush dress but also a new hair color to match. The actress swapped her signature platinum blonde locks for a fuchsia streak, adding an unexpected pop of color at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival, where her film took place The Last Showgirl celebrated its premiere.

Anderson, who stars in the film, hugged her vibrant hair color with a pink, long-sleeved dress. Although the oversized dress offered very little shape, small details made big statements. What made the biggest impression was the dress’s dramatic floor-length sleeves, which featured slits that ran along the actor’s body. As she walked the red carpet, the sleeves flowed behind her like a train. At the top, a subtle, slim V-neckline was accentuated by an intricate crystal clasp that allowed a bit of skin to peek out from the simple garment.

And while the Baywatch Alum has been at it since last year and complemented her outfit with a daring beauty look. Anderson sported her signature pencil-thin brows, a touch of mascara and, most surprisingly, bright pink lipstick. Her freshly dyed hair was pulled up into a side part, leaving a streak of magenta peeking out from her icy blonde locks.

“There are so many parallels to just being a woman and how society limits you and how you cope with being a mother and having a career. And I’ve always wanted to tell a mother-daughter story,” Anderson said at a news conference Friday The Last Showgirlper . “I had never been offered a role like this before, so I was really excited.” In the Las Vegas-set drama, Anderson plays Shelley, a veteran showgirl who faces an uncertain future after being told her show will be canceled after 30 years is finally discontinued.
