Every product Apple discontinued with the launch of the iPhone 16

Another year, another Apple product. Gone are the days when Apple released something truly revolutionary, like the iPhone X, the iPad or the Apple Watch. Every year we see little improvement in the iPhone and Mac lineups we’re already familiar with – with the exception of increasingly rare new lineups like the Apple Vision Pro. Despite Apple’s lack of new devices, at least a handful of products are on the chopping block and are one step closer to vintage status. We’ve just reached the release of the iPhone 16, the biggest release event of a year and the one that sees several SKUs quietly disappear from Apple’s website.

Advertising

What did Apple decide to stop sales and production this year? Not much, so don’t worry if you want to buy a cheaper MacBook Air M2 or an iPad. Here are the five devices and accessories you need to find from a third-party instead.

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max

What you may not have known is that Apple is discontinuing its Pro models just a year after release. Why? Ostensibly because – given how similar iPhones have been lately – people would probably just go with last year’s version to save some money. Apple forces you to take action by only leaving the latest version on the table. This has been the case since the iPhone

Advertising

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max weren’t groundbreaking, but they did have a few new, worthwhile features. First of all, they were the first iPhones that could play AAA games like Resident Evil 4 and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. In addition, they ditched the mute switch and added the action button, the Pro Max got a 5x telephoto zoom, and the 15 series was the first to switch to USB-C. Last but not least, the Pro models used titanium frames to reduce weight without sacrificing durability.

Unfortunately, the 15 professionals were not without mistakes. Ironically, the Titan’s rigidity ultimately meant the screen broke more easily, as drop test comparisons with the 16 Pro suggest the new models have improved on this weakness in durability. Additionally, the 15 Pro had an infamous overheating issue, which Apple fixed with a design change on the 16 Pro. There have already been jokes on the internet that the iPhone 16 Pro is actually just a 15 Pro S, a slight improvement over last year at the same price. So it’s not so sad that the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are no longer available.

Advertising

iPhone 13

Apple usually has a few generations of its standard iPhone available at a cheaper price. A budget option, if you will, since the iPhone SE happens to be available.

The iPhone 13 was the cheapest phone you could buy so far, as it was replaced by the 14 as the new lowest priced iPhone. The 13 somehow survived, even after Apple discontinued the iPhone 13 mini released with it. It’s a real shame that you can no longer buy a 13 from Apple, as the iPhone 14 was hardly an improvement over its predecessor – after all, it had the same processor, the same RAM and almost everything the same. It was just more expensive. The 13 may have been the last iPhone worth writing an entire song and dancing about rather than emailing everyone a summary.

Advertising

Back then, the iPhone 13 was quite a successful phone. According to CNET, thanks to its success, Apple achieved its biggest profit ever, with a 9% increase over sales of the 12. In addition to a new chip and a better battery, it included an improved display, doubled the entry-level storage, and added new cinematic camera modes. Certainly not a paradigm shift, but it was well received. That era is over, at least on Apple’s side, so you’ll have to get the discontinued iPhone 13 somewhere else.

AirPods Max with Lightning

The AirPods Max launched in 2020 and became Apple’s first pair of over-ear headphones to join the lineup, adding to the growing inventory of AirPods Bluetooth earbuds. The cans were pretty impressive. They had great sound, excellent noise cancellation, and a handful of differentiating features like a digital crown, lack of a power button, and easily replaceable earcups.

Advertising

Of course they weren’t perfect. They were heavy, had a questionable protective case, poor battery life, and cost an absurd $549. Some could justify the cost if they were audiophiles, owned a lot of Apple products, and had money to burn. Now, kids might be tempted to grab a nice discount, as Apple has discontinued the AirPods Max with Lightning to make room for an updated version.

This might seem like a good thing if Apple had delivered a worthy successor. People had high hopes for the AirPods Max 2 since there had been no update since 2020. We wanted the improved H2 chip, a better case, longer battery life, new software features like personalized volume and conversation recognition, all in all. Instead, we got the exact same headphones with new colors and USB-C for the exact same price. Literally nothing else.

Advertising

It felt like an April Fool’s joke since it seemed like updating the chip was the least Apple could do. On the positive side, the old AirPods Max with Lightning – now discontinued – will likely see significant price reductions from third-party providers. They’re exactly the same headphones and they all support the same features, so the hassle of using Lightning can really save you money.

AirPods 2 and 3

If the AirPods Max announcement was disappointing, then here’s some good news: Apple has released the AirPods 4, and it appears to be the biggest improvement we’ve seen to the base AirPods yet.

Advertising

Many features that were exclusive to the AirPods Pro were introduced this year, such as noise cancellation, touch sensors, and support for the latest software enhancements like nodding to respond to Siri. Better yet, Apple has split the AirPods into two versions: a budget version without noise cancellation for $129 and a new premium version with the latest and greatest features for $179. That means you can get the $249 AirPods Pro 2 for $70 less most of the way.

There probably won’t be many people sad about the AirPods 2 and 3 being discontinued. Compared to the new AirPods 4, they are objectively significantly worse in almost every way. However, if sound quality or battery life isn’t that important to you, this is an excellent chance to get it at a bigger discount. We hope that the AirPods Pro 2 will be discontinued soon to make way for the AirPods Pro 3 with a new generation of H3 chips.

FineWoven accessories

Remember FineWoven? This was part of Apple’s eco-friendly, carbon-neutral initiatives at the time of the iPhone 15’s release. According to Apple Newsroom, FineWoven is “an elegant and durable twill made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content. FineWoven offers a subtle sheen and a soft, suede-like feel.” So basically an eco-friendly leather replacement for MagSafe accessories. Sounds good, right? Despite Apple’s best intentions, FineWoven turned out to be one of the biggest product failures of all time – one that you shouldn’t even buy if you find it on sale.

Advertising

The main reason for this was that FineWoven cases and wallets were pathetically easy to damage. By pathetic, we mean you could permanently scar them with your fingernail. They also felt cheap, like you’d buy it on Alibaba for two dollars, not $59.

The public outcry was unanimous, with major reviewers not backing down and calling it a disaster. As is typical with Apple, they didn’t publicly admit that FineWoven was problematic. Instead, they simply didn’t release any products for the iPhone 16 and removed most FineWoven products from their website, seemingly selling out the rest of their inventory.

At the time of writing, you can see for yourself that the FineWoven page on Apple’s website doesn’t have any products to speak of, but if you dig around a bit, you might find a remaining MagSafe FineWoven wallet deep inside. That’s as good a tombstone and tacit admission from Apple as we’ll ever get. Rest in peace, FineWoven. Unfortunately, no one will miss you as much as the money they wasted on you.

Important matches to decide: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Important matches to decide: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Every week of the NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, like all teams, spend an entire week preparing for how to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses. At the same time, they want to develop a game plan that allows them to capitalize on their own strengths. Many different people invest a lot of time, research, effort and strategy to ultimately achieve a relatively simple goal – to have the most points on the board when the final whistle blows.

However, it is a team game. And despite the fact that there are 11 players on the field at any one time, certain players in certain positions can have a greater impact on the final outcome than others.

Let’s take a look at two matchups that we think will be particularly impactful heading into Sunday’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.

READ MORE: Bucs starting wide receiver injured during practice on Friday

Jalen Carter

Sure, this matchup could just as easily be described as Jalen Carter versus the Buccaneers’ interior offensive line. The combination of Graham Barton, Cody Mauch and Ben Bredeson will have to do better against the Eagles than they did against the Denver Broncos for the Bucs to have a chance in this competition. The problem? Jalen Carter. So far, Carter appears to be the best defensive tackle in the entire league in 2024. He is a game destroyer. Not only is he a force in the running game, but his combination of strength, length, mobility and tenacity also make him an absolute nightmare when it comes to overwhelming the passer from the inside.

In the first two games of this season, Baker Mayfield showed the best pocket retention we have ever seen from him in his professional career. His ability to remain calm even under pressure while keeping his eyes on the ground allowed him to achieve a lot of success that wouldn’t have been possible if he had instead panicked or crashed too soon. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened last week against the Denver Broncos. Mayfield became impatient and missed a lot of open receivers as a result.

With Jalen Carter staring at him this Sunday, Mayfield will be under pressure. If the Bucs’ IOL can play well that will certainly help, but keeping Jalen Carter out of the backfield all game isn’t a realistic goal. That’s why Mayfield needs to regain the poise he had in the bag at the start of the season and find ways to extend plays without looking downfield. When he does that, you can trust that his receivers will find ways to open up.

Lavonte David

September 22, 2024; Tampa, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David (54) runs out of the tunnel as he is introduced before the game against the Denver Broncos at Raymond James Stadium. Mandatory credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images / Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

For the first time in his six-year career, Saquon Barkley is playing behind a dominant offensive line. The results speak for themselves, as Barkley currently leads the NFL in rushing yards (351) and rushing touchdowns (4). Additionally, Saquon is one of the most explosive and physically versatile running backs in league history. He is a unique weapon and has the ability to change the course of a game in an instant.

For this reason, the Bucs’ linebackers will play an especially important role on Sunday. Despite playing one of his worst games in recent memory last week, Lavonte David can be counted on to fill gaps, fend off blockers, make tackles and penetrate pass coverage. KJ Britt, on the other hand, can’t do that. That doesn’t mean he can’t do it, but Britt is far more one-dimensional as a linebacker goes. Britt can run downhill and make a tackle, but his lack of agility, lateral quickness and coverage skills have been evident so far this season.

Second-year player SirVocea Dennis has performed brilliantly in points this season. His performance in the Bucs’ Week 2 win over the Detroit Lions was a deciding factor in the outcome of that game. However, due to injuries and the fact that he was selected in the fifth round of the draft, Dennis hasn’t had much opportunity to show his consistency. Although Dennis Britt is clearly superior in his coverage skills, the Eagles are depleted at the receiver position, negating his value in this particular matchup in the eyes of his head coach.

Whether it’s KJ Britt, SirVocea Dennis or a combination of both playing alongside Lavonte David on Sunday, there’s no doubt the Bucs’ linebackers will need to play better than they did against Denver last week. Unless? Saquon Barkley could have a field day. And if that happens, it becomes much more likely that the Bucs lose their second straight home game.

Week 5 odds, picks, best bets for the SEC showdown

Week 5 odds, picks, best bets for the SEC showdown

The college football world will turn its attention to Tuscaloosa on Saturday night when No. 4 Alabama faces No. 2 Georgia in a crucial SEC matchup to start the season.

Georgia is looking for revenge after Alabama’s SEC Championship victory last fall, while Kalen DeBoer would like nothing more than to get his first statement win as head coach of the Crimson Tide against Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs.

Georgia vs Alabama odds

team Spread Money line In total
Georgia -1.5 (-115) -125 o49.5 (-110)
Alabama +1.5 (-105) +105 u49.5 (-110)
Odds via BetMGM

When Georgia has the ball

When we last saw Carson Beck, he was struggling to move the ball against Kentucky’s defense two weeks ago before Georgia’s bye.

He finished the game with 160 passing yards and a 15-of-24 completion percentage in a game in which the Bulldogs had just 12 first downs and 262 yards of offense. It was a performance that increased the quarterback’s Heisman odds from 14/1 to 18/1.

That’s not enough against an Alabama defense that allows the second-lowest pass completion rate and ranks 11th in PFF coverage grade.

Keeping Beck out of obvious passing situations will be crucial, and the Bulldogs will lean on former Florida transfer running back Trevor Etienne on early downs.

Etienne, the brother of Jaguars RB Travis Etienne, averaged 6.0 yards per carry and more than four yards after first contact per attempt in his three years in the SEC.

Alabama, which allowed 150 yards after contact with South Florida in Week 2, has yet to face a running back of Etienne’s caliber.

Expect Trevor Etienne to play a big role for the Bulldogs on early downs. Getty Images

When Alabama has the ball

Jalen Milroe’s improvement through three games has been impressive. He still doesn’t utilize the middle part of the field to a great extent, but he has significantly reduced his mistakes; its revenue-effective gaming ratio fell from 2.8% to 1.4%.

Milroe remains one of the best deep-ball passers in the country, having completed 7 of 14 passes of at least 20 yards for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide have plenty of wide receivers, but the player the Bulldogs need to consider the most is true freshman Ryan Williams, who has caught 10 of 12 targets for 285 yards and four touchdowns in three games.

His elite speed deep, coupled with Milroe’s rocket arm, puts tremendous pressure on the back end of the defense and will force the Bulldogs to maintain easier boxes against the run.

If the Bulldogs can’t commit additional resources to stop the run, opportunities open up for Milroe as a rusher and for the talented backfield duo of Jam Miller and Justice Haynes, who are averaging nine yards per carry together this season.

Georgia ranks just 95th in defensive rushing success rate and stopping the run on early downs could be difficult.

Betting on college football?

Choice between Georgia and Alabama

According to Action Network, Georgia is 1-8 in a row since 2008 and 4-5 against Alabama.

After 113 consecutive home games as favorites, Alabama is a home underdog in this matchup – the first time they have been a home dog since November 2007.

Chances are there will be a changing of the guard in the SEC in the post-Nick Saban era, but DeBoer has his team firing on all cylinders early this season.

Both teams will be well prepared after a bye week, but I’m on the side of the Crimson Tide’s offense, with Milroe and Williams providing the big threat in this game.

I’m backing Alabama as a rare home underdog in what has the potential to be the game of the year on Saturday night.

Best Bet: Alabama Moneyline (+105, BetMGM)

Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield quits Labor – criticizes Sir Keir Starmer in resignation letter | Politics News

Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield has resigned from the Labor Party.

The 53-year-old MP is the first to leave office since the general election and in her resignation letter criticized the Prime Minister for accepting gifts worth thousands of pounds.

She told Sir Keir that the reason she was leaving now was “the political program that you seem determined to stick to”, despite your unpopularity with the electorate and MPs.

In her letter, she accused the prime minister and his top team of “impudence, nepotism and blatant greed” that “goes beyond measure.”

“I am so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to damage and humiliate our once proud party,” she said.

Sir Keir Starmer faced a backlash afterwards A Sky News report found he had received significantly more freebies than any other MP since he became Labor leader.

Since December 2019, the Prime Minister has received £107,145 in gifts, benefits and entertainment – a special category in the Register of Members of Parliament’s Interests.

Ms Duffield, who has previously clashed with the prime minister over gender issues, attacked the government for pursuing “cruel and unnecessary” policies as she resigned as Labor leader.

She criticized the decision to maintain the two-child benefit cap and make winter petrol payments subject to a means test, and accused the prime minister of “hypocrisy” for accepting free donations from donors.

“The depravity, nepotism and blatant greed are beyond measure,” she wrote.

“Since the change of government in July, the revelations of hypocrisy have been shocking and increasingly outrageous.

“I cannot express how angry I and my colleagues are at your complete lack of understanding of how you make us all look like this.”

Ms. Duffield also mentioned what she said was the recent “treatment of Diane Abbott.” thought she had been prevented from standing elected by Labor ahead of the general election before Sir Keir said she would be allowed to defend her seats in Hackney North and Stoke Newington.

Her relationship with the Labor leadership has long been strained and her decision to quit the party comes after seven other Labor MPs were suspended for voting in favor of a motion calling for the abolition of the two-child benefit.

“Someone with well above average wealth chooses to maintain the Conservatives’ two-child limit on benefits, which entrenches children in poverty, while at the same time inexplicably accepting expensive personal gifts in the form of designer suits and glasses that cost more than “It’s completely unworthy of me to have the title of Labor prime minister,” she said.

Ms Duffield said she would continue to represent her constituents as an independent MP, “guided by my core Labor values”.

Drug raid in Arapahoe County seizes 13,000 fentanyl pills and cocaine

Drug raid in Arapahoe County seizes 13,000 fentanyl pills and cocaine

Officers seized tens of thousands of dollars in cash, methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin and cocaine in a drug raid in Arapahoe County on Thursday, sheriff’s officials said.

Around 5 a.m. Thursday, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies with the Special Investigations Unit served two narcotics search warrants and made several undercover drug buys, the sheriff’s office said in a statement on social media.

During the operation, officers seized:

  • According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, a kilo of meth is worth between $6,000 and $15,000 in the United States.
  • 13,000 fentanyl tablets that could contain between 0.02 and 5.1 milligrams – more than twice the lethal dose – of fentanyl, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said. Sheriff’s officials test the pills to determine the purity and concentration of the drug.
  • 151 grams of fentanyl powder. Because just two milligrams is considered a potentially lethal dose, the fentanyl powder officers seized could have killed 75,500 people, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • 63 grams of heroin, worth between $1,722 and $2,751 in the United States, according to UN data, depending on location and purity.
  • 60 grams of cocaine worth between $1,680 and $1,980, according to the UN.
  • 12 grams of mannitol.
  • $10,000 in cash.

Colorado recently ranked first in the country in cocaine use for the third consecutive year, according to data released by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Several suspects with ties to a Honduran drug trafficking organization were arrested Thursday, according to sheriff’s officials. The number of arrests was not disclosed and no suspects were identified.

Matthäus: “Bayern cannot have any pain threshold with Musiala!” | sport

Matthäus: “Bayern cannot have any pain threshold with Musiala!” | sport

Schockierter Alonso vor Bayern-Kracher„Was denkst du? …“

Da muss man All In gehen!“

Foto: Sven Hoppe/dpa

Leaked realistic renders of the Samsung Galaxy S25+ are…boring

Leaked realistic renders of the Samsung Galaxy S25+ are…boring

After the leaks of the flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra and the compact Galaxy S25, we now have realistic representations of the mid-range Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus. Shared by OnLeaks (via Android Headlines), these renders give us a glimpse of the familiar design, with a few changes. The S25+ retains the overall aesthetic of the Galaxy S25 but has a larger display. Further details can be found below.

OnLeaks points out that Samsung is adopting the design of the Galaxy Z Fold6’s camera sensor rings for the S25+. The phone will feature a slightly narrower bezel around the 6.7-inch display, but the screen size will remain unchanged from previous models. As expected, Samsung is sticking to its classic formula and will ship the Galaxy S25+ with the Exynos 2500 processor in Europe and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in the US. The device has a 4900 mAh battery and dimensions of 158.4 x 75.4 x 7.3 mm. This makes it 0.4 mm thinner than the current Galaxy S24+ model.

Although other details remain sparse, we can probably expect upgrades to the rear camera system. The Galaxy S25 series is scheduled to launch in mid-January 2025.

Oklahoma vs. Auburn Prediction and Best Bets – NCAAF Tips for Week 5

Oklahoma vs. Auburn Prediction and Best Bets – NCAAF Tips for Week 5

Which QB can you trust in this matchup? We are on the side of the strong starter – and the better defense.

September 28, 2024 • 12:46 ET

• 4 min reading

Two teams searching for themselves on offense meet Saturday when the Auburn Tigers host the Oklahoma Sooners.

In my Oklahoma vs. Auburn predictions, I explain why the Sooners will defeat a Tigers team that has struggled against tough opponents so far this season.

Learn more in my college football picks for this SEC showdown on September 28th.

Oklahoma vs Auburn Prediction

My best choice
Oklahoma -2.5 (-105 at BetMGM)
Picks made at the time of writing may not reflect live odds.

My analysis
Both teams enter Saturday with serious questions about their quarterback play. Oklahoma sophomore Jackson Arnold has rushed for just 538 yards and seven touchdowns — not to mention three interceptions — in four games this year, which ranks him 110th nationally according to ESPN’s QBR metric.

The Sooners handed the ball over to freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. in the second quarter last weekend against the Tennessee Volunteers, who had some success down the stretch. Hawkins threw for 132 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts while running for 22 yards against one of the best teams in the country. As a result, it will be Hawkins who will receive the ball against the Tigers on Saturday.

Auburn hasn’t had consistent performance with any of its quarterback options. Freshman Hank Brown started last week’s game against the Arkansas Razorbacks but was withdrawn after three interceptions. Senior Payton Thorne came off the bench to finish the game, but it’s worth noting that he also threw five picks this year.

Between these two shaky quarterback situations, I have a little more confidence in the Oklahoma team. Hawkins did it – at least partially – against a top-tier SEC opponent, which means he’ll likely find ways to create offense against Auburn, too. Meanwhile, Hugh Freeze isn’t sure who he wants to use, with Brown and Thorne in open competition.

Oklahoma also has the better defense, at least from what we’ve seen this season. Before last weekend’s game, the Sooners had not allowed 20 points in a game, and they held Tennessee to just 25, staying in the game as long as possible while the offense sputtered. It was the first time the Volunteers scored fewer than 51 points this season.

Auburn hasn’t been particularly bad defensively, averaging just 16.8 points per game so far in 2024. However, only two of those games came against Power 4 schools, with the California Golden Bears and Arkansas Razorbacks each scoring 21+ points against the Tigers.

Hawkins and Oklahoma should be close to that number again on Saturday. The problem for Auburn is that it’s hard to imagine they can match even a mediocre offensive performance from the Sooners. I like that Oklahoma covers a very small spread in its first-ever SEC road game.

Oklahoma is my pick, but don’t confuse that with the idea that I’m in love with its offensive production. I expect both teams to struggle to move the ball on Saturday and that’s something I’m aiming for in my course in the same game.

Of course I’ll take the Sooners for coverage again. I’ll compare that to the Under’s meager 45.5 points. Both teams were under that number last week when playing against SEC competition, and I expect them to continue that low scoring trend as we move forward with the conference schedule.
