Brooklyn man stabbed by stranger in bizarre, “random” attack

Brooklyn man stabbed by stranger in bizarre, “random” attack

A 32-year-old man was wounded in the chest in a seemingly random stabbing on a quiet Brooklyn street, police and witnesses said Saturday.

The victim was standing outside a Mediterranean restaurant on Seventh Avenue near Lincoln Place in Park Slope around 9 p.m. Tuesday when a stranger rushed up to him and plunged a knife into him, police said.

The attacker may have mumbled something before bringing the knife down on his victim, police said.

“The guy was on the other side and he just crossed the street, turned around, stabbed the guy and just ran away,” said Sydni Hines, who works at a nearby restaurant. “The victim was next door [to us]. He was just standing there with two or three other people.”

EMS took the victim to New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he is believed to have survived.

The victim told police that he did not recognize the man who attacked him. Police were told there was also no interaction between the two men before the attack.

“From what I understand, it seems to have been a coincidence,” said a witness who did not want to be named. “It’s quite shocking because this is a good area. I have never heard of an incident like this ever happening here.”

“I just hope the guy is OK,” he said.

Hines also believes the attack was random.

“I don’t know if anything happened before, but from what we saw … it just seemed random,” she said. “It’s not shocking because it’s Brooklyn. But it’s shocking for the area because it’s Park Slope, it’s a pretty good area.”

Police say overall crime in Park Slope, which is protected by the 78th Precinct, has dropped significantly this year.

Through Sept. 22, cops reported an 18% drop in neighborhood assaults, down to 121 from 148 this time last year. Robberies also fell 30%.

However, the number of murders in the area has risen to two from one last year, cops said.

Investigators recovered surveillance footage of the bearded attacker, who was wearing a black ski cap, white T-shirt and black jeans on the night of the attack.

Police released the images to the public on Saturday in the hope that someone would recognize him.

A $3,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the attacker.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All tips are treated confidentially.

Crew 9 mission launched to return Sunita Williams from space

NASA launched its Crew-9 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida today, September 28, 2024, at 10:46 pm IST.

The goal of this mission is to rescue astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore, who have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) since June 6, 2024 due to complications with their original spacecraft, Boeing’s Starliner.

SPACEX LAUNCHES CREW 9 MISSION TO SAVE SUNITA WILLIAMS

The Crew 9 mission will transport NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to the ISS.

What is unique is that only two crew members are used on this flight instead of the usual four, as the remaining seats are reserved for the return journey of Williams and Wilmore. The Crew Dragon spacecraft is expected to dock with the ISS on September 29th.

Williams and Wilmore’s extended stay aboard the ISS was due to technical problems with their Starliner capsule, which experienced multiple helium leaks and engine failures during the docking process.

After careful consideration, NASA deemed it too risky to return the astronauts on the Starliner and opted for an unmanned return of the spacecraft on September 6th.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program was pivotal in facilitating crew rotation to the ISS. The Crew-9 mission marks the ninth operational flight for SpaceX under this program since its launch in 2020.

After returning to Earth, Williams and Wilmore are expected to reunite with Hague and Gorbunov for a five-month science mission aboard the ISS.

In the event of an emergency prior to Crew-9’s arrival, a contingency plan is in place that allows Williams and Wilmore to use the Crew-8 Dragon capsule, currently docked with the ISS, for a rapid evacuation.

Ken Bowersox, NASA’s associate administrator for space operations, acknowledged the challenges the astronauts faced during this extended mission but expressed confidence in their ability to adapt and thrive in space.

UNITED STATES TEAM

Scheffler against Hack after a 2 & 1 win against Scott/Pendrith: “The captain instilled some confidence in me and Collin to go out and get a point. It wasn’t pretty today… Collin moving up to 15th was great and gave us good momentum down the stretch.”

Morikawa will be chopping after a 2&1 win against Scott/Pendrith: “Yesterday was yesterday. It’s not like we’ve never played bad golf and it’s not like we’ve never lost… Since we were the first group, it was really important for us to put a point on the board.”

Schauffele against Hack after the 3 & 2 win against Conners/Hughes: “You’ve heard me say individually that you must have some “dog” in you. When I look around my team room, I see a lot of dogs here.”

Begay III birdied Scheffler on No. 16 to move into first place, his first birdie of the day: “You knew Scottie wouldn’t be out today. He’s too good and has too much heart. The Americans kicked him out first for a reason.”

Kaufman on Finau’s opening tee shot in the fog: “Started left-center – no idea what that does.”

Begay III over Cantlay’s Chip-In-Eagle at No. 11 for a 2 lead: “We were waiting for something big to happen in this game and here it is. These games can only be about one shot.”

INTERNATIONAL TEAM

Tom Kim to Wood after their 4 & 3 win against Clark/Bradley: “We did it in Charlotte (at the 2022 Presidents Cup) and our chemistry is really good.” We just came together. I feel like we’re both comfortable. If I make a mistake, he has my back and if he makes a mistake, I have his back.”

Chamblee on Si Woo Kim’s decision to hit driver on No. 14 and throw it into the water: “I’m not sure I’m a big fan of it. He doesn’t quite have the power of Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau…it’s just not in his power to wield it. That’s the great thing about these drivable par 4s. Makes you do something you’re uncomfortable with.”

Byrum on Si Woo Kim’s shot at No. 14: “Deep, left-wing and no chance. Worst shot he’s made in two days.”

Byrum to Mackay about Pendrith’s decision to hit the driver on No.14 and knock him into the water: “How long did Adam Scott talk to him before he hit the driver?”

Mackay: “I think it was just a decision between Taylor and his caddy. I didn’t see Adam there getting involved in anything with Taylor.”

George Lynch remembers the pressure of creating memorable solos in the Dokken era

George Lynch remembers the pressure of creating memorable solos in the Dokken era

George Lynch has always been very prolific, typically releasing a few albums a year under the Dokken or Lynch Mob banners and often working on solo or short-term collaborative projects.

Given the breadth of his back catalog, it’s no surprise that Lynch has difficulty picking favorites from the lineup. “I would say it’s all of them at the same time and none of them,” he says guitarist. “They are all your children when you create them – they are a product of your creative essence. This is a pretty deep, spiritual thing,

“Coincidentally, my wife recently asked me what I thought was the best song I’ve written. I said I would rather have written one great song than a bunch of pretty cool songs. Something like “Imagine” or “Hey Jude” – one of those songs that defines a generation or transcends time. These are the songs that set the standard for a great work.

“I guess perhaps one obstacle in developing this groundbreaking song is that I don’t consider myself a great singer. I don’t even listen to guitarists – I think the voice is the purest instrument. I can hear something in my head that I can never really capture vocally, so I guess that’s a gap I can’t seem to bridge.”

However, he doesn’t have to worry. Fans are quite comfortable with his guitar playing, which has been the subject of intense observation for decades. Lynch’s groundbreaking solos have been a staple in guitar magazines for years, and YouTube is full of lecturers trying to unravel every little detail of his work.

“I’ve looked at a few things online and there are a few people who really get it right and just as many who are completely wrong,” he complains. “The bottom line is that I may actually be the worst person to demonstrate some of my guitar parts.” [laughs] It’s been more than 30 years since I recorded many of these songs and I don’t really remember what I did. I just played off the cuff, so most things didn’t work out, and I never really tried to reproduce it note for note after recording it.”

Despite his misgivings, not to mention his amazing performance, Lynch graciously responded guitarists desire to share the stories behind five titles that best represent his career. Here’s what he told us.

“Paris is Burning”, Dokken – Breaking the Chains (1981)

“This song is older than Dokken – it was something we used to play in [the pre-Dokken bands] the Boyz and then Xciter, so it had been hanging around for a while. Don [Dokken] I changed a few words, but it was essentially the same song – the chords, the melody, the arrangement, etc. It’s become a song that I really explore in a live setting and is something of a showcase, though it was never originally designed that way. It’s just the way it evolved. It’s actually been heard on some of my live records, and you can see that it’s morphed into something completely different than the original version.

“It’s interesting how I came up with the titles for many songs back then. I would read that TV guide and browse through the titles of old films. Probably well over half of the Dokken song titles came from movie titles that I found TV guideand from that came “Paris Is Burning.” What does it even mean? [laughs] I’ve never seen the film.

“Most of the writing for Dokken was a collaboration between me and Jeff [Pilson, bassist]but Don helped with some. For example, I would literally say, “This song is called “Paris Is Burning”” and then we would come up with the words to go with the title. I always focused on finding a hook and a melody first, and then we tried to bridge the gaps between us. Unfortunately, TV guide no longer exists, so I no longer have that songwriting resource.”

“Breaking the Chains”, Dokken – Breaking the Chains (1981)

“I came up with the solo spontaneously, that’s how I normally work. Back then, I liked to create a structure – maybe make up a sentence, respond to it, and then let it play maybe an octave or maybe two higher, with a kind of crescendo at the end. I guess if there was any formula, that would have been the template for it back then.

“In a way, there is a certain sense of composition involved in the creation of many of my Dokken-era solos, even though I wouldn’t have prepared anything in particular before it was time to lay down the role. Back then, there was usually a fairly limited set of parameters for a solo that was intended to be a radio-friendly hit. If you didn’t fit the mold, the radio would actually edit your songs without your consent. Since there are only 16 bars available here, I had to get in and out and make a memorable statement. Every song that was on the radio at the time had a killer solo, so there was almost a feeling of competition. A friendly Competition.

“Guitarists are actually a family and everyone generally respects each other. We were all good friends, but back then you knew that when it came time to take your solo on stage, you better come up with something special.”

“Tooth and Nail”, Dokken – Tooth and Nail (1984)

“This is a rare example of a solo that I fully planned before I went into the studio. I remember writing it with Jeff and thinking I wanted a song with a whole section for the solo that goes through a bunch of different changes, with each section having its own sub-style. I think we probably didn’t really succeed in that in a pure sense, as some parts are almost identical, but that’s what we were aiming for.

“I spent quite a bit of time working out the tapping sections and I guess it’s one of my most popular solos. I used the Randall RG80 and RG100 solid state heads. Dokken was on tour with Pantera at the time and I remember Dimebag Darrell was really impressed with my amps. That was his way of picking up Randall, but he really made them his own, so eventually they were probably more closely connected to him than to me. These were very cool amplifiers. Gary Siddall, the engineer at Randall, emulated the sine wave of my 50 watt Marshall “Plexi” heads, and I think they came pretty close, but with a really immediate response and no sag. They were pretty warm for a solid-state amp.”

“Mr. Scary”, Dokken – Back for the Attack (1987)

“Originally it was supposed to be a song with lyrics – that’s how I wrote it. There weren’t any extra guitar parts or anything like that, just a simple arrangement. The problem was that no one could figure out what to do with it to make it work vocally. We wanted to destroy the song, but we had some time in the studio and the engineer really liked it, so we spent the whole night on it and the next morning we had built this thing that we thought was pretty cool.

“Don and Jeff were trying to come up with lyrics – they’re both really good singers, but I’m not, so it can be difficult for me to express vocal ideas. I don’t know if they bet The but there is a lot of effort involved. [laughs] It could have worked, and I still think to this day that we could have come up with something if we had put a little more effort into it.

“There are a lot of complex guitar layers here that make it impossible to reproduce live with a guitar because it just creates gaping holes. It really takes at least two guitars. This would have been recorded with my ESP [George Lynch signature] REH guitar, and I think as far as the amp goes it was an early Marshall metal face that would have been modified by Frank Levi.”

“Wicked Sensation”, Lynch Mob – Lynch Mob (1990)

“The sound and production here is much better than the Dokken stuff, which is firstly because we have a completely different kind of band and also because it was a reaction to being in a very white-sounding band be.” [laughs] I had so many R&B, soul, funk and blues influences that didn’t really come through in Dokken. The ’80s thing was a bit lacking for me, even though we had great success.

“At Lynch Mob we created a happy accident with our chemistry and came up with some good songs. It was frustrating for me that we didn’t really have that element in Dokken when I could put my dream band together.” We spent a lot of time working on the first album to make it impressive.

“One of the basic principles of the new band’s structure was to have that groove element – there was a lot of groove in this band. A big part of it was Oni Logan on vocals. That opened up a lot of scope. “For the bluesy expression, the basses in the ’80s seemed bad, the drums often sounded crappy, and everything was over-processed, so I wanted something that avoided all of those pitfalls.”

Razer Synapse 4 has just been released and this new software update is a big improvement

Razer Synapse 4 has just been released and this new software update is a big improvement

As part of the announcements at RazerCon 2024, it was revealed that a brand new version of Razer Synapse is available to download, and if you actively use Razer peripherals, it looks like a must-have app update thanks to a 30% performance increase over the previous version.

There were some exciting reveals during this year’s RazerCon show, from the ultra-premium Razer Kraken V4 Pro, which is expected to be the company’s new best gaming headset, to the innovative Razer Freyja haptic cushion. A reveal that may seem less impactful, but is actually quite significant, is the reveal of Razer Synapse 4. This new update not only makes the software run faster, but also brings with it some useful additional features.

All of Razer Synapse 3’s existing features remain, but this latest version brings some additional features specifically for some of Razer’s best gaming mice. These include One-Step DPI Adjustment, which allows more precise control over your mouse settings, and Sensitiviy Matcher Calibration, which allows you to transfer DPI settings across multiple Razer mice. Meanwhile, the improved asymmetrical cut-off allows for finer tuning of takeoff and landing distances.

Razer’s Snap Tap feature is also getting better support despite the Snap Tap CS2 ban, after announcing it will be rolling out to more keyboards and even the Blade laptops.

Another big improvement concerns the user interface, which is now much more intuitive and presents all the devices you manage in a clearer way. This also means you can adjust the settings of individual peripherals much more quickly since you don’t have to search for the device you want to adjust.

Speaking of speed, Razer also claims that Synapse 4 runs 30% faster than Synapse 3 based on its own testing. Despite this increase in efficiency, there doesn’t appear to be any additional load on your system that could potentially disrupt gameplay. Razer Synapse 4 is available to download now from the Razer website.

For a closer look at some of the products that will benefit from this update, check out our Razer Viper V3 Pro review and Razer Huntsman V3 Pro review to read our thoughts.

See damage in Asheville; other areas

Hurricane Helene has left its mark on North Carolina and many residents are trying to make sense of the devastation it left in its wake.

Helene brought heavy rains, strong winds, damaging debris and flooding to the state. Power outages and life-threatening flash floods were reported in the western part of the state.

In many areas of North Carolina, such as Chimney Rock and Asheville, residents experienced heavy rain. The highest rainfall reported was 29.5 inches in Busick Raws, Yancey County, North Carolina, Gov. Roy Cooper’s office said.

The heavy rains prompted Rutherford County Emergency Management to issue an immediate evacuation notice to residents near Lake Lure Dam on Friday morning.

On Friday evening, the county government office provided an update on the dam’s water level.

“The water level in Lake Lure has stopped rising and is beginning to decline,” the county government office wrote in a Facebook post. “Emergency personnel rescued over 25 people through rapid water rescue, EMS, fire and law enforcement.”

Emergency personnel provided an update around 9:00 p.m. local time that the storm had knocked out many phone lines across the county, particularly in Lake Lure.

Joe Mazzulla’s advice for Jayson Tatum, Sam Cassell on becoming repeat champions and other thoughts on the Celtics

Joe Mazzulla’s advice for Jayson Tatum, Sam Cassell on becoming repeat champions and other thoughts on the Celtics

“I spoke to [coach Joe Mazzulla] a lot,” Tatum said. “Joe was probably the luckiest person in the world that I didn’t win the MVP title in the finals and didn’t play in two games in the Olympics. That was strange, but if you know Joe it makes sense.”

We know Joe, and last week I started asking him about Tatum’s claim that Tatum’s adversity made Mazzulla the happiest person in the world. He smiled and answered before I even answered the question.

“Yes,” said Mazzulla. “He’s 100 percent right.”

Mazzulla said he encouraged Tatum to take a step back and appreciate everything he has accomplished at the age of 26, and he explained that his mindset lies in his love for Tatum and his belief in what is possible for him , takes root.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet because he works so hard and is willing to develop,” Mazzulla said. “So I thought it was great that he had something to work towards. When you’re successful, sometimes the next hunger isn’t right in front of you. Sometimes you have to wait for it. Sometimes it’s a loss; Sometimes it’s a streak of bad luck. He could get this right in front of him.

“So I just thought it was a gift. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be [ticked] talk about it. I didn’t want to hide how this might affect him in real time because I wasn’t there. But as his coach and as someone who really cares about him, I just thought it was great because it gives him something to work towards for the rest of his career.”

▪ The Celtics are trying to become the first team to win back-to-back NBA championships since the Warriors in the 2017-18 season. No one on this roster has accomplished that feat, but assistant coach Sam Cassell played point guard for the Rockets when they won two straight titles in 1994-95.

In 1994, the Rockets won 58 games and defeated the Knicks in a closely contested seven-game NBA Finals. However, the following regular season was rocky. Cassell said he noticed a difference in the way opponents approached the Rockets. The games seemed more meaningful to them.

The Rockets, returning their core pieces, struggled for most of the regular season before a February trade for Clyde Drexler gave them a shock. They only won 47 games and were the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference, but the addition of Drexler and the knowledge of what it took to survive in the postseason propelled them forward as they defeated the Magic in the Finals.

Cassell said it can be challenging for a defending champion to start a long regular season with a rush. There is agreement that the road ahead will be long and arduous. But he believes this Celtics team will be focused early on, and he echoed Mazzula’s sentiment that this season has nothing to do with the last.

“I can tell you that no one here is talking about repeating anything or trying to defend anything,” Cassell said. “It’s just a new year and a new season. We just want to win a championship every year.”

▪ Ownership of the Celtics has gone mostly quiet since the Grousbeck family announced it planned to sell its controlling interest this year. Majority owner Wyc Grousbeck took part in training on Thursday and then chatted with Mazzulla. Co-owner Steve Pagliuca, who has publicly announced his intention to participate in the bidding process for majority ownership, was seen at media day at the Auerbach Center on Tuesday. It still appears unlikely that a deal will be completed before the end of this calendar year.

▪ The Knicks made one of the most significant moves of this offseason on Friday night when they agreed to trade Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to the Timberwolves in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. It’s hard to evaluate these deals without seeing the details, but at first glance I like this deal for the Knicks.

Randle often needed the ball in his hands and passed somewhat awkwardly next to star point guard Jalen Brunson. Towns is a skilled 7-footer who shoots about 40 percent from the 3-point line and will help create space for Brunson.

He will start at center while Mitchell Robinson is out due to injury and can easily move to power forward when Robinson returns. DiVincenzo was excellent for the Knicks and his departure ruins some of the Villanova brotherhood spirit, but Deuce McBride should now capitalize on the increased opportunities. No, this move doesn’t catapult New York past Boston to the east, but it is even more powerful.

▪ I’m heading to Abu Dhabi next week to cover the Celtics’ two friendly games against the Nuggets. I’ve never been to this part of the world. So send me an email with any suggestions or recommendations.
