The leader of Staten Island’s historic free black community celebrates important milestone

The leader of Staten Island’s historic free black community celebrates important milestone

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Sylvia Moody D’Alessandro, the fearless leader of the decades-long preservation of the history of Sandy Ground – the country’s oldest free black settlement still inhabited by descendants of its pioneers – celebrated a major milestone last week many other community leaders, African American community activists, and an extensive list of family and friends.

She was 85.

Moody D’Alessandro made a grand entrance at the Crystal Room in South Beach on September 22 with her husband Robert D’Alessandro on her arm to attend a gala party planned by her daughter Julie Moody Lewis. But it wasn’t just any birthday celebration with food, drink and music. The party was a tribute to everything Moody D’Alessandro has accomplished for Sandy Ground and the people of Staten Island over the years. In fact, a long list of speakers lined up to not only wish her a happy and happy birthday, but also share stories about their relationship with her.

“It’s really nice to see people I’ve known my whole life in one room… There’s a lot of love in that room. I am very grateful,” said Moody D’Alessandro about the event.

The first speaker was Brian J. Laline, editor in chief of the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com, who recalled how Moody D’Alessandro was named an Advance Woman of Achievement in 1998.

“The first time I stood in front of a group of people like this was in 1998… That’s when I gave all of us in this room and all of our readers the opportunity to know who you really are. And we found out that you are not just Sylvia D’Alessandro the historian, Sylvia D’Alessandro the visionary, Sylvia D’Alessandro the courageous woman, you are Sylvia D’Alessandro the committed woman,” he said.

“Sandy Ground is the story of America. It is a national story. …It tells a cultural story. It is a story of resilience and passion of people who wanted what America should stand for – the land of the free. It was her passion to be free and it tells your story and if it wasn’t for you, Sylvia, if you didn’t teach your daughter and your family, that story might very well have been lost,” he added.

The words of a daughter

Speaking about her mother’s milestone, Moody Lewis said: “I was raised by a woman who was God-fearing, wise, kind and compassionate. She is so selfless. Her husband, child, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends carry her in their hearts. She is a woman of good character and integrity.”

“She is someone who cares. …She is a perfect reflection of God’s grace. I can only pray that I live up to her expectations as a daughter, mother and human being. She never ceases to amaze me. It’s clear that I’m not the only one who loves and truly admires her. She is well respected and very popular,” she added.

Retired College of Staten Island professor Charles Thomas, who directed the Willowbrook-based school’s African studies program, sang a song he performed at Moody D’Alessandro’s wedding in Yoruba, a language spoken by the Yoruba people in Nigerian and which conveys the message: “What God has created cannot be destroyed.”

“Today we celebrate not just another year in your incredible life, but 85 years of strength, grace and unyielding commitment to our shared history and future,” said Bobby Digi Olisa, community leader, organizer and executive director of Canvas Institute.

“Your leadership at Sandy Ground is a beacon of hope and resilience…I am continually inspired by your unwavering commitment to preserving the rich legacy of our ancestors while creating new opportunities for future generations. Your friendship and mentorship have been a true blessing to me,” he added.

History of sandy soil

Sandy Ground was settled in the 1820s and is the third documented community in New York where African Americans owned land, according to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. The first recorded black landowners in Sandy Ground were Moses K. and Silas K. Harris, brothers from New Jersey who originally came to the area to work as gardeners.

In the 1850s, African-American oystermen from Maryland were drawn to the area because of Raritan Bay’s abundant oyster beds. During the 19th and 20th centuries the community became self-sufficient and prospered, hosting a range of professionals and craftsmen, from blacksmiths and shopkeepers to teachers and midwives.

A historian

For decades, Moody D’Alessandro spoke to audiences throughout New York City about the significance of Sandy Ground, including the belief that the community served as a “stop” on the Underground Railroad, which ran across the country from 1830 to about 1865, aiding runaway slaves from the south flee to the northern states and Canada.

The College GameDay team discusses Alabama-Georgia, Nick Saban

The College GameDay team discusses Alabama-Georgia, Nick Saban

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – ESPN’s College game day Crews took over the quad side of 6th Avenue Friday morning. The desk that college football fans will see on Saturday, September 28th was set up with Denny Chimes in the background, waiting for one of the big games of the season.

GameDay is in town for the Top 5 matchup between No. 4 Alabama (3-0) and No. 2 Georgia (3-0), scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC. Ahead of the highly anticipated contest, members of the GameDay team spoke with Tuscaloosa reporters to preview the main game, including the host Rece Davis and analyst “Stanford Steve” Coughlin.

Davis, a graduate of the University of Alabama, was excited to be back on campus for the big game.

“Very much so, especially for a game like this,” Davis said. “It’s always great to be here.”

“It feels like a little piece of history is being created here. I said it this way today: They signed Kalen (DeBoer). He convinced the team. He’s certainly the boss in the building. But as far as college football as a whole is concerned, he will be the head coach at Alabama tomorrow night.

“And I think it’s a great thing for us to be a part of this big stage for these two powerhouses.”

GameDay’s trip to Tuscaloosa for the Georgia game will be Alabama’s 59th appearance overall on ESPN’s pregame show, tied with Ohio State for the most appearance of all time. The Crimson Tide has a record of 37-21 in their last 58 appearances. College GameDay traveled to the UA campus twice last year and attended the SEC title game and the Rose Bowl. Alabama was 2-2 in those contests.

Saturday’s game between Alabama and Georgia will be the head coach’s first Kalen DeBoer. During UGA’s Kirby Smart is not new to the rivalry, it will be his first time facing Alabama Nick Saban not on the other side. Saban, who retired in January, is part of the GameDay crew and is joined on set by his wife, Miss Terry, who serves as a guest selector.

Both Davis, Coughlin, DeBoer and Saban discussed the game with reporters on Friday.

The network’s evening news barely mentions the new ICE report on 425,000 criminal migrants in the United States

The network’s evening news barely mentions the new ICE report on 425,000 criminal migrants in the United States

“NBC Nightly News” was the network’s only primetime newscast Friday night to report groundbreaking new data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) showing that more than 400,000 illegal immigrants convicted of crimes are currently in custody United States are free.

Both ABC’s “World News Tonight” and “CBS Evening News” made no mention of the findings that ICE provided this week in a letter to Congress that was reported by several other media outlets on Friday. They simply reported on Vice President Kamala Harris’ trip to Arizona’s border with Mexico and praised her policy proposals on immigration.

Only NBC News’ evening news program mentioned the letter, although it did not cover the full scope of the findings – it simply reported that “more than 13,000 migrants previously convicted of murder are currently free in the United States.”

Fox News Digital reported Friday that ICE sent a letter this week to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, and other members of Congress showing that there are 425,431 convicted criminal migrants — and 222,141 with pending criminal charges — as of July 2024. who have crossed the U.S. southern border illegally and are awaiting deportation from the country.

According to the report, none of these criminal migrants will be detained, including those who have received their final deportation order or are undergoing deportation proceedings.

Of these 425,431 convicted criminals, 62,231 were convicted of assault, 14,301 were convicted of burglary, 56,533 were convicted of drug abuse, and 13,099 were convicted of murder. Another 2,521 were convicted of kidnapping and 15,811 were convicted of sexual assault.

“NBC Nightly News” briefly noted the existence of the letter and the more than 13,000 illegal immigrants convicted of murder who are still in the country, but did not mention the nearly half a million other criminal immigrants who are not currently in the U.S are imprisoned

The other two networks made no mention of the shocking results at all on their prime-time nightly newscasts on Friday.

“CBS Evening News” made no mention of the letter, instead focusing on the dueling immigration rhetoric of the Harris and Trump presidential campaigns.

The network noted that Harris “has touted himself as tough on cross-border crime” and reported that “foot traffic across the entire U.S.-Mexico border has declined in recent months,” thanks in part to Mexico’s crackdown on immigration as well as the Biden-Harris administration guidelines.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” took the same approach to reporting on the border issue, mentioning Harris’ trip to Arizona this week and how she sought to portray his vision of border security against that of former President Trump.

The network reported that asylum restrictions enacted by the Biden-Harris administration in June had led to a “drastic decline in encounters across the border.” It also mentioned Harris’ border policy mantra that “we can be a nation of laws and also a nation of immigrants.”

Trump criticized Harris’ border policies following the release of the ICE data, telling supporters at a campaign rally in Michigan on Friday: “We’re like a landfill. Non-citizens, convicted criminals from around the world are currently at large in the United States of America.”

Neither Gojo nor Itadori could have been the protagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen with the ending that Gege Akutami gave to a character

Neither Gojo nor Itadori could have been the protagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen with the ending that Gege Akutami gave to a character

With Jujutsu Kaisen Since the book is slowly losing momentum and is almost coming to an end, the leaks for the final chapter have already caused a stir. The biggest mistake Jujutsu Kaisen Slowly, the serious lack of focus on the characters and the unanswered mysteries became apparent. Despite spending so much time with them, we know little to nothing about them and their characters are not fleshed out enough.

Gojo reveals in Jujutsu Kaisen that Yuji is actually alive. [Credit: Mappa]

Yuji Itadori, the beloved protagonist, had been through a lot since the Shibuya arc, but that was about it. Fans are confused about where or what his domain extension is or what he might end up doing. Likewise, the famous Gojo Satoru, who is also known to non-anime fans, died far too early. So if the fan favorites couldn’t get the spotlight Jujutsu Kaisenthen who did it? Unfortunately the answer is Sukuna.

Spoiler alert!!!

Spoilers for the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen and the Shinjuku Showdown Arc!

The main characters are great but irrelevant

Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen.

The majority of the characters Jujutsu Kaisen have been well received by the masses. From their eccentric personalities to their attractive looks, Gege Akutami nailed most aspects. Yuji Itadori is a charming protagonist who later suffers a lot and we see him become the hardened protagonist he is now.

Gojo Satoru isn’t just an all-powerful mentor; The pressure to be the strongest is enormous and he has lost too much. Megumi Fushiguro, the boy with so much potential, struggles to find his place in the world of jujutsu sorcery. Maki has suffered so much abuse and oppression at the hands of the elitist, misogynistic Zenin clan. However, in the long run, none of this matters.

After the Shinjuku Showdown arc, the plot started to fall apart. After Gojo Satoru’s tragic death, everyone else was left to pick up the pieces. Sukuna was essentially invincible and it was impossible to give him an advantage after taking over Megumi’s body.

Fans witnessed the deaths of several characters, some of which were incredibly unnecessary, before Yuji finally defeated him. In the end, surprisingly, it was Sukuna who developed the most. He admitted defeat and was a comforting figure to Uraume, something we never thought possible. But why did Gege lose focus on her main characters and elevate Sukuna?

The flaw in Gege Akutami’s character writing

Gojo is trapped in the Prison Realm by Jujutsu Kaisen.

Fans were rightly excited about the return of fan favorite Gojo Satoru, but the strongest wizard was killed off in a disappointing way. It almost felt disrespectful to his character and we all know Akutami notoriously dislikes him. Still, this isn’t a good excuse for how incomplete the author left the storylines of several other major characters. Instead, Akutami gave Sukuna a very powerful conclusion, even though fans were looking forward to his demise for several chapters as he gleefully murdered many.

Sukuna’s conclusion in the manga is undeniably quite interesting. The King of Curses has always been a fascinating character that you love to hate after a while. Unlike Mahito, he learns what loss and defeat are and accepts them. However, it doesn’t really explain why the main characters are incomplete and their development is almost nil. The main trio is largely reduced to the ambitious “power of friendship” trope. Sukuna Ryomen is essentially treated as the main character in the end, despite the lack of Heian-era lore and the hasty defeat.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available on VIZ Media.

CORRECTION: A previous headline in this story misstated the viewing options for Texas-Mississippi State.

It’s time for Texas football to make its debut in the Southeastern Conference.

The No. 2 Texas Longhorns face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday in their first SEC game of the year after handily winning all of their non-conference games.

Week 5 shouldn’t be much different, as Mississippi State (1-3, 0-1 SEC) has losses to Florida, Toledo and Arizona State. Additionally, Bulldogs starting quarterback Blake Shapen suffered a season-ending shoulder injury against the Gators. True freshman Michael Van Buren will start in his place.

The 45-year-old movie star looks unrecognizable in his first-ever headshot shown to fans – but can you guess who it is?

He is one of the biggest male film stars of his generation.

But before this American actor found fame on the big screen, he rose to prominence in a hit NBC sitcom.

He later transformed himself into one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men, starring alongside stars like Jennifer Lawrence.

Earlier this week, he shared his first portrait photo, in which he looked almost unrecognizable with his wavy blonde locks and beaming pose.

“This guy didn’t know what to expect… My first headshot ever!” he wrote to fans.

So can you guess who it is?

The 45-year-old movie star looks unrecognizable in his first headshot shown to fans – can you guess who it is?

It’s Chris Pratt!

Even though the headshot had been shared before, it caused many of his followers to do a double-take.

His wife Katherine Schwarzenegger appeared shaken as she commented: “This is a lot for me to process.”

Meanwhile, other fans were confused about his appearance, noting that he looked like Patrick Swayze and John Schneider from Dukes of Hazzard.

Another said they thought it was Heath Ledger at first glance.

Born Christopher Michael Pratt in 1979, the Minnesota native appears to be in his early 20s in the atmospheric black-and-white portrait.

Pratt was discovered at age 19 while waiting tables at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant in Maui, Hawaii.

Even his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger appeared shaken by the headshot as she commented:

Director Rae Dawn Chong cast him in the short horror film “Cursed Part 3,” which got his foot in the door.

He then landed his first regular television role as Harold Brighton “Bright” Abbott in the series Everwood.

But it wasn’t until 2009 that Pratt found real success with the role of Andy Dwyer in the NBC comedy series “Parks and Recreation.”

Although the role was only intended as a supporting character, Pratt’s humor and charisma convinced the showrunners to give him a larger role.

After losing weight for Moneyball 2011, Pratt shocked the world with a tinted mirror selfie – propelling him into the category of a Hollywood leading man.

Thanks to his role in Guardians of the Galaxy, Pratt is now one of Tinseltown’s most successful new stars.

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films. Joe Gow, who had served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should be retained in a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission. The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote. Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning. Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leaders became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites. The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making pornographic films and speaking publicly about them and for the questions it raises about free speech rights. Gow argued that his videos and two e-books he and his wife Carmen have published about their experiences in adult films are protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract. Zach Greenberg, an attorney at the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to…” academic freedom and the right to free speech.” “FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputation,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.” Republican lawmakers already view the Wisconsin university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget. Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said because Gow hasn’t taught in 20 years, he will be assigned general education courses, but she refuses to allow him to return to teaching in any role. Gow was criticized in 2018 for inviting porn actress Nina Hartley to give a talk on campus. She received $5,000 from tuition fees for her performance. He came up with the idea of bringing her to campus after filming a pornographic video with her, the university said. Gow and his wife’s e-books were written under the pseudonyms “Monogamy with Benefits: How Porn Enhances Our Relationships” and “Married with Benefits.” Our real-life adventures in the adult industry.” But they also star in a YouTube channel called “Sexy Healthy Cooking,” in which the couple cooks meals with porn actors.

Two of the Big Ten’s top teams will face off Saturday when No. 12 Michigan hosts Minnesota. The Wolverines are coming off a dramatic 27-24 win over USC and will look to move to 2-0 in Big Ten play, while the Golden Gophers look to rebound from a 31-14 loss to Iowa.

Michigan has a four-game winning streak in this series, including a 52-10 win over the Gophers in Minneapolis last season. But Minnesota has a positive history at Michigan Stadium. In fact, the Gophers’ last three wins over the Wolverines took place in the building (2014, 2005 and 1986).

To add another win to that tally, the Gophers will have to stop the run better than they did against the Hawkeyes in Week 3. Minnesota led 14-7 at halftime but outscored 24-0 after halftime following a punishing ground play by the Hawkeyes. The Wolverines will look to follow a similar scenario after relying heavily on their running game to get past the Trojans.

Star Backs: Michigan running back Kalel Mullings was rated a four-star linebacker in the class of 2020 and spent most of his first three seasons with the Wolverines on defense. But after auditioning on offense in 2022, he became the team’s No. 3 prospect in the program’s 2023 national title run. With Blake Corum out, Mullings has risen to the top of the running back room. He is averaging 8.1 yards per carry, and his 429 yards in four games far exceed his career total of 253 earlier in the season. Mullings’ late-career renaissance is a fascinating story for the Wolverines, and his defensive background is evident in the tough style in which he runs. Minnesota counters with Darius Taylor, who rushed for 799 yards in just six games last season. He was under pressure last week against Iowa but has already scored four total touchdowns this season.

Orji experiment: Michigan turned to junior quarterback Alex Orji to start against USC last week and he got the job done. The former three-star prospect is a limited thrower — he completed just 7 of 12 passes for 32 yards against the Trojans — but took care of the football and made plays with his legs. While the Wolverines are clearly one-dimensional with Orji at quarterback, he amplifies that lone dimension in a way that makes Michigan difficult to defend. As his tenure as a starter continues, it will be interesting to see if coach Sherrone Moore gives Orji more opportunities in the passing game.

Hard route: The trip to Michigan is part of a difficult stretch to open Big Ten play for the Gophers, who will see no reprieve after Iowa kicked them in the teeth. After that similarly physical contest in Michigan, the Gophers will host No. 13 USC on Oct. 5 before traveling to the West Coast to play UCLA. In total, Minnesota will play seven weeks in a row to start the season before having two bye weeks in the second half of the season.

Michigan vs. Minnesota prediction, tips

This will be a devastating, drawn-out battle in which Minnesota’s defense will have to be better against the run than it was in last week’s 31-14 loss to Iowa. The problem is that Michigan may actually be better at hitting the rock than the Hawkeyes. Accommodating Kalel Mullings, Donovan Edwards and Alex Orji for four quarters is a difficult task, and the Wolverines should be able to create separation in the second half with the help of their solid defense. Pick: Michigan -9.5
