NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), which represents 85,000 workers at ports from Texas to Maine, including 700 at the Port of New Orleans, is planning a strike next week.

In a video posted on YouTube, ILA President Harold J. Daggett explained the potential impact of the strike and predicted widespread economic disruption.

“The first week there will be news everywhere: boom, boom. In the second week, people who sell cars won’t sell cars because the cars won’t come off the ships. Everything in the United States comes from a ship. They go out of business. Construction workers are being laid off because materials are no longer being delivered,” Daggett said.

Contract negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents 40 shipping companies and terminal operators, have been on hold since June. The union is demanding better wages and assurances that ports will not fully automate their operations, which the ILA says would put thousands of jobs at risk.

“They’re trying to get robots and things like that to do our jobs and put us out of business,” said Henry Glover, president of ILA Local No. 3000.

Tens of thousands of ILA members are ready to strike. At the Port of New Orleans, 700 workers are expected to join the planned strike. Longshoremen warn that without their presence at the docks, the public can expect shortages and supply chain disruptions.

“From cars to toilet paper to various chemicals. Anything shipped to the United States is unloaded by us,” Glover added.

Professor Ali Bustamante, director of the Department of Business and Economic Research at the University of New Orleans, says the impact of the strike depends on its duration.

“If we think about a strike that only lasts two weeks, that is very nominal considering that it will not have a significant impact on consumer prices. When we talk about a strike that threatens to last a month or more, we are talking about significant costs for consumers,” said Professor Bustamante.

The Port of New Orleans has declined interviews during ongoing negotiations. However, in a statement, a spokesman said the port had always maintained a “good” working relationship with ILA members and was preparing for a possible work stoppage on October 1.

The White House has called on both sides to resume talks, but with only a few days left, longshoremen say they will begin picketing Tuesday morning if a deal is not reached.

Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Republican Sen. JD Vance of Ohio will face off Tuesday in the first and only scheduled vice presidential debate before the Nov. 5 election.

The debate comes as early voting begins in several states including Minnesota and South Dakota and three weeks after former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris met on stage at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia over immigration, abortion, the economy, climate change and overseas there have been conflicts.

The high-risk event could be the last duel between all candidates before election day.

Tuesday’s debate is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET and last 90 minutes. The event will take place in New York City – a deep blue Democratic stronghold and former home of Trump – at the CBS Broadcast Center.

The event will be broadcast on CBS and live streamed on all platforms where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available. CBS said it plans to broadcast the debate simultaneously on different channels.

• Each candidate has two minutes to make a closing statement. Vance won a virtual coin toss on September 26 and elected to make his declaration in second place.

Vance asked Republican Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota to step in as Walz, a fellow Minnesotan, to prepare for the debate, The New York Times reported. Vance has been conducting debate practice at his home in Cincinnati and online with his team and a senior adviser to Trump’s campaign, Jason Miller.

Vance is expected to portray Walz’s policies as too liberal and focus on the actions he took as governor of Minnesota while attacking him over inflation and immigration.

Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg represented Vance as Walz prepared for the debate. Walz has been preparing with his longtime aides, Biden White House alumni and members of the Harris-Walz campaign team. The Minnesota governor is expected to take aim at Vance’s conservative stance on reproductive health and LGBTQ rights.

No arrangements or proposals for a second vice presidential debate have been released.

WADSWORTH, Ohio – Early Friday night at Art Wright Stadium, it looked like Mother Nature was playing the main role.

But as the night wore on, it was Wadsworth’s Brysen Hall who wrote the final chapter, as the freshman quarterback threw a touchdown pass in overtime that lifted the Grizzlies to a 21-14 victory over Hudson in a battle of undefeated teams in the Suburban led league national conference.

With the teams tied 14-14 after regulation time, Hudson won the coin toss and elected to play defense first in overtime. Hall and the Grizzlies made them pay for that decision.

After a penalty gave Wadsworth the lead on the first play, two plays later it was Hall who found Calix Lemp on the left side of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown.

“I saw the coverage I expected all week and I got the play call,” Hall said. “I knew that’s where I wanted to go if I got that look, so I was excited about the piece.”

The Wadsworth defense then took the field and stopped the Hudson offense without a first down ending the game.

“It was a shortened field, so that makes it a little more difficult,” Wadsworth head coach Justin Todd said. “So we played more man-to-man and our guys started applying more pressure.”

Wadsworth (6-0, 3-0) entered the evening ranked No. 6 in cleveland.com’s Top 25, while Hudson (3-3, 2-1) was ranked No. 15. They were two of the three teams that entered the Suburban League National undefeated along with Nordonia on Friday evening.

Wadsworth scored first on a 5-yard touchdown run by Hall with 11:17 left in the second quarter. Wadsworth’s touchdown was set up by a 38-yard pass from Hall to Jacob Earnest on a third-and-5 that gave the Grizzlies the ball at the Hudson 19. Madigan led the Grizzlies with 73 yards rushing on 22 carries, while Gray had 54 yards on 11 carries.

Hall and Earnest connected again on the drive for a big play, this time with a 36-yard pass to move the ball into Hudson territory.

“We’re going over the plays we expect to run in practice throughout the week,” Hall said. “If we get the opportunity to take the shots we want, we’ll be ready for it.”

Hall finished the game 10 of 15 for 106 yards and a touchdown and rushing score.

“That’s why we trusted him with this football team,” Todd said. “His physical talents are one thing, but it’s what’s between the ears that sets him apart from other rookies we’ve trained before.”

Hudson answered Wadsworth’s second score of the game with a touchdown drive of its own, as a 6-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Judy to Anthony Paolucci capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive and cut the Wadsworth lead to 14-7 There are 3:23 minutes left in the third round.

Wadsworth will play the Suburban League National Conference’s other undefeated team next week when the Grizzlies welcome Nordonia (6-0, 3-0) to Art Wright Stadium. Hudson will be back on the road at Brecksville-Broadview Heights (1-5, 1-2).

“That’s what the Suburban League is all about,” Todd said. “Week after week it’s always a championship game.”

FRANKLIN – With everything on the line and the final seconds ticking away Friday night, Franklin senior quarterback Will Tirrell made a last-minute decision to run into the end zone.

Tirrell darted from left to right, beat two Duxbury defenders, kept the ball out and accelerated into the end zone with two seconds left. His 4-yard touchdown run gave the No. 10 Panthers a thrilling 21-19 victory over the visiting Dragons.

“There wasn’t a single kid out here that gave up,” Franklin coach Todd Kiley said. “There wasn’t a kid who didn’t believe we were going to win that football game.”

The Panthers (3-1) erased an early 13-0 hole in the first half, then rallied from a 19-14 deficit with 1:50 to go to prevail. Quarterback Justin Bianchetto (19 for 34 passes, 236 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) orchestrated an 86-yard drive and found Stephon Reed (6 catches, 101 yards) for a critical 40-yard catch and run for the ball to bring into the goal 4.

Tirrell took care of the rest, defeating the No. 6 Dragons (3-1) and ending their 14-game winning streak.

“It was unthinkable how we got back,” Tirrell said. “I want to say that we had Anthony Gates, No. 11, with us. That’s why we did it.”

Gates, a former member of the Panthers, died in a car accident in June 2023 at the age of 16. Tirrell said the Panthers think about him every day and always play with him.

Kiley, who is in his first year at Franklin, knows the Dragons from his time in Holliston. He and Duxbury coach Matt Landolfi knew nothing would come easy for either side.

“It was a great high school football game,” Landolfi said. “We fought the whole time.”

Duxbury jumped into the lead late in the first quarter on a 5-yard rush from Jack Rees, thanks in part to a strong block from John Rovegno. The Dragons took a 6-0 lead into the second and extended the lead to 13-0 on a 21-yard pass from Brady Rhinesmith to Jake Falls with 10:32 left in the half.

Trevor Jones intercepted a Franklin pass, but a poor punt set up a 31-yard shot from Bianchetto to Chase Kiriacopoulos with 48 seconds before halftime. The Dragons dictated most of the action, but the Panthers were within striking distance heading into the third period.

Tirrell gave Franklin a 14-13 lead with 5:19 to play with a 1-yard plunge. Ian McNeil gave the Dragons a 19-14 lead on a 26-yard pass from Jones, but the Panthers found a way out in dramatic fashion.

Fans stormed the field and flooded Tirrell & Co. with a sea of ​​yellow. As the celebration continued, a “Willy T” chant rang out.

Capaldi shared her favorite moments on and off production: “Her favorite memory on set will probably be the campsite; I never got to go to summer camp, so it was like living the experience. Capaldi continued: “[My favorite off-screen moment was] Every time we had to do a scene with the skunk doll, it was just so fun because, you know… getting to play with a skunk doll, that is – not many people can say they have to do that!”

Reflecting on what attracted her to the film, Capaldi said: “In a way, this film is very silly, being someone who is a bit more calm and grounded. I thought it was so fun to get to play this character. And I was drawn to the film because… it sounded like a mix of… The parent trap and then a little of the adventures of Home aloneand only issues on which they cannot get their act together.”

The National Weather Service said Helene had cleared most of western North Carolina as of 11:21 a.m. Friday, but significant impacts, including severe flooding, were expected to continue into the weekend.

A flat tire is always annoying, but a spare tire can help you get back on the road quickly. However, even if you have a spare tire, it may not be operational or safe when needed. Consumer Reports reveals what you need to know before a tire emergency occurs.

According to Consumer Reports, safety is the number one priority when a flat tire occurs. You should pull off the road as far as possible in a safe area.

Next, you’ll want to have a space-saving spare tire, affectionately known as a “doughnut.” It has long since replaced the full-size spare wheel in most passenger cars. If you’re lucky, it might be years before you need one, but it shouldn’t be forgotten.

Your spare tire expires just like your other four tires. You heard right. Replacement tires expire. The last two digits of the DOT number on the sidewall of the donut tire indicate the year the tire was manufactured. If it is more than ten years old, replace it.

Of course, a replacement tire only works if it is properly inflated. Check the pressure and condition of your spare tire every time you check the pressure of your other tires and refill as necessary.

Only 40% of new cars have a spare wheel. Manufacturers remove it to reduce production costs and reduce weight to reduce fuel consumption. So don’t assume you have one.
