Is Apple’s new? iPhone mirroring function actually makes sense in the latest versions of iOS and MacOS? No matter where your iPhone is nearby – in another room where it’s charging or buried at the bottom of a bag – you can see and control it from your Mac.

Aside from the sheer convenience of not having to pick up the phone, I’ve found several reasons to use iPhone mirroring. In fact, I find myself using it regularly on my iPhone 16 since the release of iOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia. (And if you run this latest betaslets you experiment with one of the most interesting mirroring features, the ability to drag and drop items directly onto the phone and vice versa.)

When your iPhone is in a pocket, purse or other room

The simplest use case is when you want to access something on your phone but it’s buried in a bag, just out of reach, or you can’t get up (or you can, but the snoozing cat or dog on your lap would don’t do that). I don’t appreciate the disruption). The connection via iPhone mirroring is much more convenient.

However, this feature doesn’t work over long distances, such as if you accidentally left your iPhone at home and need to access it from work. iPhone mirroring uses Apple’s Continuity technology, which means the iPhone and Mac must be within Bluetooth range of each other.

Even today, some popular services still work much better in apps than in web interfaces. Yes, we’re looking at you, Instagram. Posting through an app often includes more options or a better user experience. Because iPhone mirroring gives you almost complete access to the iPhone interface, you can post with a mouse cursor instead of a finger.

If you want to quickly transfer items between devices (coming soon)

I take a lot of screenshots for work and personally take even more photos, all of which end up in my photo library. These images are then synced to my Mac via iCloud – but sometimes it seems to be at a pace aptly described as “when the phone gets around to it.” If I need something on my Mac immediately, I use AirDrop between devices, which It works, but it’s more complicated than I’d like.

Later this year, however, we’ll be able to drag and drop all types of files – not just images – between an iPhone and the Mac running the iPhone Mirroring app. This also works both ways: Drop a video or important PDF file from a Mac Finder window onto the mirrored iPhone to transfer it to the phone. If you don’t want to clutter up your Mac with software junk

MacOS has a long history of supporting system extensions, startup items, and various background processes that you probably don’t realize are running most of the time. For example, some large application suites distribute these accessory files like a dropped Lego box. In many cases, resource consumption is negligible, but these parts still consume memory and processor power.

In contrast, iOS has always been built as a siled system, with each app having its own protected storage and tightly controlled routes for interacting with other apps. Especially for apps that you don’t use often but need to keep, you may want to install a mobile version to avoid the app creep that occurs on macOS.

iPhone Mirroring offers you the opportunity to continue using such an app on your Mac without infecting MacOS with all the associated junk that is normally installed.

If you want to log in to your bank’s app instead of doing so on the computer

Unfortunately, some of these suggestions focus on the theme of “an app is better than a website,” and there is often no better example than banking websites.

It can be easier and more secure to access your bank accounts or investments by using iPhone Mirroring to sign in with the iOS app instead of a web browser on your Mac. You’ll still need to authenticate the iPhone app when you open it (since you can’t use Face ID or Touch ID on the device), but that might be a more convenient option.

If you want to access locked and hidden apps on your phone

In iOS 18, you can hide sensitive apps or require authentication (e.g. Face ID) to open them. If you’d rather use them on your phone rather than through an app or web interface on your Mac, iPhone Mirroring lets you access them when the phone isn’t nearby.

If you do this, the iPhone Mirroring app will require authentication via Mac, as expected. Enter your Mac’s login password, use Touch ID, or authenticate with your connected Apple Watch to open locked apps or reveal the hidden folder on your phone.

If you are giving a presentation and want to show what is on the iPhone

Admittedly, this is a smaller subset of use cases, but if you need to demonstrate something on iPhone during an online or in-person presentation, iPhone Mirroring is a far easier option than other methods.

Aside from installing an overhead camera, the predominant method is to connect the iPhone to a Mac via a cable and use QuickTime Player to display the phone’s screen. Then you would still have to use the phone with your hands.

With iPhone Mirroring, the phone can now be connected wirelessly and operated using your Mac’s trackpad or mouse and keyboard.

The main limitation with this approach is that the mirrored connection will be interrupted if you need to do something on the phone.

And a streaming restriction that we would like to see changed

An unknown feature between Apple devices is the ability to stream media from an iPhone to a Mac using AirPlay. Is it time to sit back and watch a movie or catch an episode of your favorite TV show? You can launch it on iPhone and target Mac with its larger screen.

Since iPhone mirroring allows you to control an iPhone that is out of reach, it would be nice to start a movie playing on the Mac screen. However, digital rights management kills this idea when it comes to iPhone mirroring. Even though you can open an app like TV and start a show, the picture remains black.

This black screen also occurs when you use AirPlay to stream while iPhone mirroring is active. This only works if you physically control the phone and stream to the Mac.

McDonald’s is notorious for its broken ice cream machines – there’s even an independent website that monitors broken McFlurry machines. So Wendy’s takes advantage.

Wendy’s is selling small, frozen dairy Frosty desserts for $1 through September 30 – and is partnering with McBroken, which is reporting which McDonald’s locations have broken ice cream machines.

The temporary price reduction could also attract price-conscious customers who don’t eat out as often and spend less, which could lead to a decline in fast food sales and a decline in restaurant dining.

The Wendy’s Frosty “was the go-to choice for sweet treats when fans had cravings while the other guys’ ice cream machines were offline – often for two to three hours at a time,” the chain said in a news release without directly mentioning McDonald’s .

According to McBroken’s data, nearly 15% of McDonald’s ice cream machines were broken as of Thursday. They are most often unavailable between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles being the hardest-hit cities.

Wendy’s has added its restaurant locations, represented by its logo, to the McBroken map to show fans where they can get a “reliable and delicious option.” There is also an ad at the top of the website promoting the $1 Frosty special.

McBroken was founded several years ago by Rashiq Zahid, who was also frustrated by the lack of working ice cream machines at McDonald’s. He previously told CNN that it works using data from McDonald’s iOS and Android apps.

If the ice cream machine is offline, the McDonald’s app will remove the ice cream order from the cart, he said. In this case, a red dot will appear on the mcbroken.com map indicating that the location is unavailable.

In response, McDonald’s previously told CNN: “It’s exciting to see customer passion translated into customer-innovated solutions to further make this experience a reality.”

The war between Wendy’s and McDonald’s over cold desserts has heated up in recent years. Wendy’s has added limited-time flavors, from pumpkin spice to peppermint, to boost Frosty’s popularity. McDonald’s also often promotes new flavors for its McFlurry, but recently added a miniature size as customers increasingly look for value.

Many historians have commented on the extent to which Abraham Lincoln centralized federal power during his war against the South. Less often mentioned is the fact that this trend continued during the Reconstruction period from 1865 to 1877. In his essay “Wichita Justice? On denationalization of the courts, Murray Rothbard notes that the Reconstruction era provided a convenient excuse for the expansion of federal powers and the further centralization of political power. A striking example of this was the new laws to combat “racial hatred,” particularly to counter the emergence of white militias such as the Ku Klux Klan.

The Ku Klux Klan Act was passed “to enforce the provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and for other purposes.” Sometimes referred to as the Civil Rights Act of 1871, the law made it “a federal crime to deny to any group or individual ‘any of the rights, privileges, or immunities, or protections specified in the Constitution.'” To enforce this law, the President could exercise habeas Suspend Corpus, use the US military or “use such other means as he deems necessary.”

Since it was already a violation of the Constitution to deny an individual these rights, the significance of this law was not only that it made a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment a criminal offense – even more significant was the fact that the legislature gave power to the state We call on federal authorities to use the military to combat such violations. Objections that this was unconstitutional went unheeded because, after all, the KKK had to be eradicated. Just as the abolition of slavery provided a belated moral justification for Lincoln’s war, the eradication of the KKK provided a compelling reason for sending the military to enforce Reconstruction in the defeated South.

When government is given such broad powers, it is important to question the motives behind it and to examine more closely the root causes of the problem the government is trying to solve. In his book In the course of human eventsCharles Adams notes a universal truth about the local reaction to any postwar “foreign bureaucracy to rule over the conquered people”: that it breeds resentment among the occupied people. This resentment is not simply racial hatred in the usual sense, although that may be part of it. As Adams explains, history shows: “Once you disenfranchise a ruling population and bring into power a new government made up of hostile aliens of the past, an underground will develop that will destroy the alien rule.”

Paradoxically, the militant white organizations targeted by the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 had arisen in part in response to the crimes of the same federal authorities who were later sent to dismantle them. Adams points out that “Southerners, who had tolerated blacks for centuries, had zero tolerance for those who had joined the federal army and fought and killed Southerners.” In contextualizing the original motivation for the KKK, Adams notes that

The white population in the South saw and feared the advancing Northern occupation forces and bureaucrats determined to destroy the Southern establishment and install a new government with the ex-slaves having the right to vote to make this possible Ex-slaves would gain control of Southern society with the help of Northern carpet traders, which would mean the war’s ultimate permanent defeat. For the white population, this was an intolerable prospect, and one of the main purposes of these underground societies was to prevent this scenario from ever playing out.

Therefore, the motivation for the rise of the KKK was “to restore and preserve white rule in the South and to protect against militant ex-slaves bent on revenge for generations of servitude.” Adams points out that this is in a congressional minority report that “placed the blame for the Klan’s lawlessness on Northern Reconstruction practices, particularly the Union League” – the Union League’s goal was to convince former slaves, sometimes through coercion, to vote for their preferred candidates. In this sense, the problems that arose during Reconstruction were largely caused by federal authorities, which subsequently gave themselves new powers to solve the problems of their own creation.

What was presented as the need to eradicate militant white organizations served as justification for expanding the responsibilities of the federal police. These new powers ultimately transcended the context for which they were created. Rothbard gives the example of a judge sending federal marshals under powers granted by the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 to enforce anti-abortion protests in 1991. Time magazine reported:

Although the law was originally intended to protect freed slaves from intimidation by Southern whites, some federal courts have ruled that it can also be used to protect women seeking abortions from the wrath of abortion advocates.

Rothbard comments on these events:

And what about the old federal “anti-Ku Klux Klan law” from the 1870s that Judge Kelly invoked to send federal marshals? First, this was a Reconstruction era law, a period in which the Constitution was systematically violated and states’ rights were trampled upon. It is an outdated law that should be repealed rather than enacted. And second, the law was ostensibly aimed at preventing the KKK from “crossing state lines” to harass black people—a flimsy pretext for imposing federal jurisdiction.

This example shows that federal powers are inherently vulnerable to abuse and are endlessly expanded to address situations not contemplated when the original powers were delegated. Donald Livingstone argues that by centralizing more power in government to promote liberal values, in this context to enforce ideals that would today be called “anti-racism,” liberals are inadvertently contributing to authoritarianism. He argues that

The liberals themselves are partly responsible for this [20th] century, a fact they have not yet acknowledged. After all, such barbarism could not have occurred without the unprecedented centralization of power in modern, large-scale “unitary” states, first created and legitimized by the liberal tradition in the name of individual freedom.

Livingstone therefore argues that the better approach would be to “endow the periphery with some power to veto the center” rather than centralizing power to enable the government to protect liberal ideals. In the U.S. context, this approach to decentralizing power is found in the doctrine of states’ rights and the right of states to secede.

Seventeen restaurants, hotels and other businesses in and around Wichita were out of compliance during food safety and lodging inspections conducted by the Kansas Department of Agriculture from Sept. 15-21.

They were cited for a number of violations, including ongoing cockroach infestations, flies landing on food and surfaces that touch food, moldy bathtub caulking, water leaks, missing information and equipment, dirty equipment, missing smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, foods that weren’t stored at safe temperatures, an employee who didn’t wash their hands and more, according to inspection reports.

Information about the food establishments and hotels and motels, as well as a summary of their violations, appears below. All of the businesses listed are located in Sedgwick County. The list was compiled Sept. 25.

More than 40 establishments passed their inspections Sept. 15-21. A list of those also appears below. Some may have been non-compliant in previous weeks.

Andy’s Frozen Custard, 10788 W. 21st St. in Wichita — Three violations on Sept. 17 during a routine inspection. Water wasn’t hot at a bathroom sink, containers of brownies and candies didn’t have lids on them to protect them from contamination including from flies, flies in restaurant were landing on food and surfaces that touch food. Next inspection: Sept. 27.

Andy’s Frozen Custard, 3425 E. Douglas in Wichita — Three violations on Sept. 18 during a routine inspection. Water wasn’t hot at a bathroom sink, flies in the restaurant were landing on food and surfaces that touch food, a fly landed on brownies that weren’t covered. The next inspection date wasn’t provided.

Baymont Inn & Suites by Wyndham Wichita East, 12111 E. Central in Wichita — Sixteen violations on Sept. 17 during a complaint inspection. There was no cleaning or sanitizing solution in the fitness rooms for guests to use, no towels in the fitness room, no ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets by sinks in some rooms, emergency lights didn’t work, carbon monoxide detectors weren’t checked every six months, smoke alarms didn’t work in two rooms, issue with smoke alarm testing logs, broken microwave, freezers in rooms had individual ice trays in them which isn’t allowed, moldy bathtub caulking, bottles of floor and surface cleaners weren’t labeled, the carbon monoxide detectors in the boiler room and the laundry room weren’t working, no carbon monoxide detector testing logs on site, smoke alarms aren’t checked every six months, no single-use gloves in laundry room. Next inspection: Sept. 27.

Chick N Max, 3520 N. Maize Road, Suite 200 in Wichita — Four violations on Sept. 18 during a routine inspection. Several foods including cheeses and chicken weren’t cold enough in a refrigerated preparation table, leaky carbonator below soda dispenser, hand-washing sink was blocked by a drink cooler and a bucket, equipment including lids and spatulas were still dirty even though they were in clean storage. Next inspection: Sept. 28.

Delux Inn, 8401 W. Kellogg Drive in Wichita — Nine violations on Sept. 17 during a complaint inspection. No records showing carbon monoxide detectors are checked every six months, bottle of air freshener wasn’t labeled, no single-use gloves in laundry room, leaky sink in laundry room, no fire extinguishers on the outside of the motel, no records showing smoke detectors are checked every six months, no emergency management plan available to employees, no smoke detectors in some rooms, battery is missing in a smoke detector. Next inspection: Sept. 27.

Economy Hotel Plus Wichita, 5805 W. Kellogg Drive in Wichita — Three violations on Sept. 17 during a follow-up inspection. Leaky pipe in laundry room ceiling and standing water in the basement, water was coming from under the door for the electrical and sprinkler room, standing water in the hallway, trash and dirt on carpets throughout the building. Fat Ernie’s Family Dining, 2806 S. Hydraulic in Wichita — Five violations on Sept. 18 during an inspection that was a follow-up to an administrative order. A pitcher was blocking hand-washing sink, cockroaches in cabinets and in dining room, cockroaches in kitchen, flies, large gap above screen door in kitchen, several dead insects in building including bugs next to bakery supplies and in clean containers, dead cockroaches, containers and pans soiled with sticker residue were in clean storage. Fish and More, 2021 S. Oliver in Wichita — Four violations on Sept. 17 during a routine inspection. Cooked food wasn’t held at a safe temperature, no probe food thermometer, catfish nuggets and catfish steaks weren’t kept hot enough, there isn’t a hand-washing sink in a shed where the restaurant prepares yams and cornbread. Next inspection: Sept. 27.

Jacky Chan Sushi, 7820 E. Harry in Wichita — Six violations on Sept. 19 during a routine inspection. Cooked rice left at room temperature, cabbage and cooked pork weren’t held at safe temperatures, no paper towels at bathroom sink, tuna was thawing in intact vacuum packaging, missing information related to cooking and storage procedures for cooked sushi rice, no soap at sink, sushi rice wasn’t labeled with the time it was made. No test strips to measure concentration of sanitizer, dirty can opener, no probe food thermometer, hard-boiled eggs weren’t labeled with their preparation dates, employee didn’t wash hands between handling dirty and clean dishes, pans of cooked chicken wings weren’t covered in the walk-in cooler. How do businesses fail inspections?

Businesses fall out of compliance when they have too many violations, issues that can cause a foodborne illness, when a problem can’t be fixed right away, such as bug and rodent infestations, and more. But most violations are minor and are corrected while an inspection is taking place.

Typically, establishments are reinspected within 10 days to ensure they are following the rules.

It’s rare for a business to shut down over a failed inspection. But it can happen. Usually, closures are temporary, voluntary and due to major problems, such as sewage backups, pest infestations, and water or power outages.

The James Bond film series has been on the big screen for so long that thousands of names must have appeared alongside the legendary spy by now.

Since 1962, 007 has been known as “Dr. No” has appeared in no less than 25 films (plus two spin-offs) and has met countless allies and villains along the way.

Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton have all played Bond over the last 62 years.

But what about the cast around her? So many famous faces appeared in front of the camera during the Bond series that some of them have been forgotten.

The list of names includes one of the best-selling pop stars of all time, at least two Game of Thrones cast members and a star from one of Netflix’s biggest series.

Research from Betway has revealed that the top eight stars you’ve probably forgotten played major roles in one of the biggest film franchises of all time.

Madonna

Topping the list is legendary pop sensation Madonna, who briefly appeared alongside Pierce Brosnan as fencing instructor Verity in the 2002 film Die Another Day.

Not only did she sing the Bond theme song for the film, which reached number three in the British charts, but she was also one of the leading actresses.

Verity is introduced when James Bond is taking fencing lessons in London – training her protégé Miranda Frost, played by Rosamund Pike.

Her appearance was so brief that Betway discovered that Madonna was the biggest name from the Bond franchise that people had forgotten over the years.

Die Another Day, released to mark the franchise’s 40th anniversary, proved to be the last Bond film to star Pierce Brosnan; In 2005, Daniel Craig took on the lead role.

The film received mixed reviews – 56% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 6.1 out of 10 – but remains a favorite of Bond fans.

Charles Dance

Long before he played Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, Charles Dance made his feature film debut playing Claus in the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only.

In For Your Eyes Only, starring Roger Moore as 007, Bond fights against the Soviet Union to locate and secure a high-tech British Secret Service device lost at sea.

Claus is introduced as the henchman of the film’s main villain, Aristotle Kristatos (Julian Glover), when Bond is forced to escape on skis while Claus pursues him.

Throughout the rest of the film, Claus pursues Bond and attempts to fight him in other environments, but is ultimately killed before he can complete his mission.

For Your Eyes Only currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 69% and an average critic rating of 5.4 out of 10 – indicating more mixed reviews for the film.

However, the film was a huge success at the box office and grossed the equivalent of just over £500 million in 2024. And yet Charles Dance has slipped under the radar!

David Harbour

Before becoming James Hopper, police chief in Hawkins, Indiana, David Harbor was Gregg Beam in the 2008 Bond film Quantum of Solace.

Gregg was the head of the CIA’s South American division, but was secretly corrupt and turned out to be an ally of the main antagonist Dominic Greene (Mathieu Almaric).

In Quantum of Solace, Gregg is the boss of Bond’s close ally and friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright).

Eventually, after the death of Dominic Greene, Gregg’s ties to the Quantum businessman are exposed and Felix replaces him as department head.

Similar to Die Another Day and For Your Eyes Only, Quantum of Solace was released to mixed reviews, earning a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, among Bond fans, the film is considered a long-awaited revenge-based sequel to 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Minnie Driver

British-American actress Minnie Driver was just making her first steps into the film industry when she was cast in the 1995 Bond film GoldenEye.

GoldenEye was the first Bond film to star Pierce Brosnan as 007, in which he tried to stop a rogue MI6 agent (Sean Bean) from using satellite weapons against London.

Minnie plays Irina, the lover of crime boss Valentin Zukovsky (Robbie Coltrane) – she works as a singer in one of Zukovsky’s clubs, where Bond meets her.

However, her singing isn’t quite up to standard (“Who’s strangling the cat?”), and she was last seen leaving the stage shortly after Zukovsky ordered her, “Take a hike!”

“GoldenEye” did much better with critics than any other film we’ve covered before, earning an 80% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 6.8 out of 10.

The film also did well at the box office, grossing the equivalent of £550 million worldwide in 2024, making it the most successful Bond film since the 1970s.

Hugh Bonneville

Did you know that Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, starred alongside Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies?

Well, now do it! Hugh Bonneville was cast as an unnamed supporting character, known only as an Air Warfare Officer, just three years into his film career.

Hugh’s character, serving on the HMS Bedford, is attacked by the Chinese Navy at the end of the film and is last seen as part of the search party looking for Bond and Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh).

Despite the positive reviews GoldenEye received, Tomorrow Never Dies was considered another mixed outing, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 57% and an average rating of 6.1 out of 10.

However, the film did well at the box office, and the eventual box office revenue only just matched the huge success of “GoldenEye” two years earlier.

Sammy Davis Jr

We could forgive you for not knowing, considering Sammy Davis Jr.’s cameo in Diamonds Are Forever was cut from the final cut of the film.

The 1971 film, which featured Dame Shirley Bassey’s classic theme song of the same name, is the last to star Sean Connery, who was convinced to return after exiting the franchise in the 1960s.

Davis Jr., once considered “the greatest living entertainer in the world,” arrived on the Bond set having previously been nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy in the 1960s.

He appeared at a roulette table in the early versions of Diamonds Are Forever, but did not appear in the final film – his scene can be viewed in the DVD extras menu.

“Diamonds Are Forever” marks the fifth time that Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld has appeared – the last time until the 2015 film “Spectre” brought him back.

Tobias Menzies

Game of Thrones and Catastrophe star Tobias Menzies makes his first appearance in the James Bond series as Ms (Judi Dench) assistant Villiers in the 2006 film Casino Royale.

In the film, M is alerted by Villiers to Bond’s secret mission to track down the criminal mastermind Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), who is the main antagonist of the story.

Villiers is last seen when he comes across a corpse – that of Solange Dimitrios – and immediately leaves the room with his hand over his mouth.

Casino Royale marked a significant rebranding of the Bond franchise and is still considered one of the greatest James Bond films of all time, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% and an average rating of 7.8 out of 10.

Joanna Lumley

The absolutely fabulous actress Joanna Lumley is a star on both the big and small screens, but did you know she had a supporting role in one of the earliest James Bond films?

In 1969, she appeared as The English Girl, one of Blofeld’s Angels of Death and the only Angel of Death without allergies (if you know, you know).

After her appearance in the film, Joanna returned to the Bond franchise and recorded abridged versions of the Bond books Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Diamonds Are Forever.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 81% with an average score of 5.7 out of 10, but has a good reputation among Bond fans.

And just like that, Congress is out of session again and the elections are less than 40 days away.

Sorry for the Carrie Bradshaw-ism, but the government is now funded until December and all you have to do is see who wins. There will likely be a number of legislative efforts in the lame-duck session, but the Nevada delegation scored a major, bipartisan victory this week with the passage of the Lake Tahoe Restoration Reauthorization Act. Since this is a Nevada-related topic, let’s get straight to the Nevada Angle.

Let’s get into it.

The Nevada Angle

A bill that would keep federal funds flowing to Lake Tahoe for another decade is now awaiting the president’s signature after successfully passing both chambers.

The Lake Tahoe Restoration Reauthorization Act, introduced in March 2023 by Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and co-sponsored by Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Senators from California, is the third iteration of the original Lake Tahoe Restoration Act of 2000.

This bill, sponsored by the late Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Harry Reid (D-NV), established a $300 million fund for restoration projects around the lake, including removal of invasive species, new hiking trails, and conservation efforts Resilience to forest fires. Crucially, as approved programs, these projects do not have to go through the annual appropriations process and are not subject to the whims of partisan scrutiny or budget priorities. The funding is already in place – approval simply allows these funds to be used further.

In 2016, under the leadership of then-Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV), a reauthorization passed and appropriated $415 million. This reauthorization was scheduled to expire on September 30th.

The 2024 reauthorization does not include any new money — there is nearly $300 million left in the fund — but does extend the time for spending by another 10 years.

The bill was passed unanimously by the Senate in July and by a voice vote in the House on Tuesday.

“I am proud of our bipartisan work in providing funding for vital programs that keep the lake clean, support local jobs and support our tourism economy,” Cortez Masto said in a statement. “It is an honor to lead Team Tahoe and fight for the resources the basin needs to thrive.”

In the House of Representatives, the bill was supported by all four Nevada residents and Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA), who represents the California side of the lake. Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV), who led the effort in the House, said the coalition intentionally used the already-passed Senate version of the bill to avoid any administrative delays.

“We passed the Senate bill so you don’t have to go back and forth,” he said.

Tahoe advocacy has always been a bipartisan effort. The annual Lake Tahoe Summit, a tradition that began in 1997, traditionally includes speeches from lawmakers from both parties and both states.

Tahoe advocates testified on behalf of the bill before a House subcommittee in early September. They noted that federal funding is a critical component of the conservation program, which has implemented more than 830 projects since its founding in 1997.

“In the midst of election season, the entire country can celebrate the successful bipartisan effort to pass the Lake Tahoe Restoration Reauthorization Act,” League to Save Lake Tahoe CEO Darcie Goodman Collins said in a statement. “In every conversation we have with lawmakers, all we hear is a commitment to protecting this national treasure.”

⚡The geothermal energy bill sponsored by Lee passes the House of Representatives — A bill to accelerate geothermal energy development co-sponsored by Rep. Susie Lee (D-NV) passed by voice vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. The bill creates a categorical exclusion from the environmental review process for permitting geothermal wells in areas where drilling has already been conducted or permitted within the last five years.

💰$$$ to ABTC — American Battery Technology Company (ABTC), a Reno company that manufactures and recycles lithium-ion batteries, will receive $150 million from the Department of Energy as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to advance the domestic lithium battery supply chain. ABTC has been the beneficiary of several federal grants and programs, including taking advantage of $60 million in tax credits from the Clean Energy Act signed by Democrats to build its battery recycling facilities. This grant will be used to build a second battery recycling facility.
