How do businesses fail inspections?

Businesses fall out of compliance when they have too many violations, issues that can cause a foodborne illness, when a problem can’t be fixed right away, such as bug and rodent infestations, and more. But most violations are minor and are corrected while an inspection is taking place.

Typically, establishments are reinspected within 10 days to ensure they are following the rules.

It’s rare for a business to shut down over a failed inspection. But it can happen. Usually, closures are temporary, voluntary and due to major problems, such as sewage backups, pest infestations, and water or power outages.

The lists in this story include only businesses from Sedgwick County. But you can search food and lodging inspection results anywhere in Kansas at https://foodsafety.kda.ks.gov/FoodSafety/Web/Inspection/PublicInspectionSearch.aspx.

Jacob deGrom Aces Final Test, Texas Rangers homer beats Los Angeles Ange four times

Jacob deGrom Aces Final Test, Texas Rangers homer beats Los Angeles Ange four times

ANAHEIM – Jacob deGrom got what he needed and so did the Texas Rangers.

deGrom started his third and final game of 2024 on Friday, overcoming a mental hurdle for the two-time Cy Young winner who underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2023. Even though the Rangers were no longer in contention, deGrom wanted to put his recovery mentality behind him before the offseason.

He was retired after leading the Los Angeles Angels to one run on four hits and striking out five in four innings for the Rangers; 5:2 win. Although he only threw 53 pitches, he was pleased with his progress, as were the Rangers.

There’s no point in overextending his recovering ace with two games left in the season.

“I felt like that was the best thing [start of the three]deGrom said. “There is no reason to push it. Let’s end it here and go into the offseason and treat it like a normal offseason.

The Rangers hit four home runs and Marcus Semien and Carson Kelly each had three hits. Kelly missed three times to reach the cycle. Wyatt Langford and Adolis Garcia hit home runs during a three-run first inning. Kelly scored in the fourth and Semien scored in the ninth.

Texas Rangers reliever David Robertson has a franchise-record 34 holds in 2024.

Texas has a record of 43-5 in games in which David Robertson and Kirby Yates served as pitchers. The Rangers won their 15th straight game when both appeared, with the duo pitching scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings on Friday. The club has won 23 of the last 24 games in which both appeared. The only loss in this stretch came in extra innings at Boston on August 12th. Robertson earned his club record 34th save and Yates earned his 32nd save. It’s the first time the Rangers have had a reliever with 30 holds and 30 saves in the same season.

Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien celebrates a home run in the ninth inning, his 23rd of the season.

Microsoft Edge uninstall grayed out in Windows settings.

How to uninstall Microsoft Edge on Windows

Uninstalling Microsoft Edge from Windows is a challenge because the app is a default app on Windows OS and is also the system’s default browser. In prior years, Microsoft allowed for a simple uninstall process through its settings; however, the uninstall option is now grayed out if you attempt to remove the app from your system. This restriction also varies depending on where in the world you live. If you live in the EU, you can uninstall Microsoft Edge in the traditional way via settings, but if you’re in the U.S. or U.K., this function is not available. You should check to ensure that the ability to uninstall the browser is available in your region.

There are roundabout methods for uninstalling Microsoft Edge, such as using uninstaller apps or Command Prompts. However, these options can break various functions on your computer system, including the new Copilot AI tool and features in the Microsoft App Store that are also default aspects of Windows. Attempting to uninstall the app could also leave your desktop in a loading loop and in need of additional troubleshooting. Over time, Microsoft has sent out updates that override the effectiveness of these methods as well. It is also possible for Microsoft to reinstall Edge in a future update, leaving you stuck with the browser once again.

Microsoft recommends not attempting to uninstall the Edge browser, but here are some of the safest methods available for removing the app from your desktop.

Ignore Microsoft Edge

The safest option is to ignore Microsoft Edge and use a different browser option, such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or any other of your preference. You can remove the browser visually from your desktop, start menu, and taskbar by right-clicking the icon and selecting delete or un-pin. However, Microsoft Edge will still live on your desktop in the background.

To ensure your system favors the browser of your choice over Microsoft Edge, you can set it as your default browser. Go to Settings > Default Apps > Search or Scroll Through Set Defaults for Applications to find your choice browser. Select the browser, then select Default. It will become the main browser that your desktop responds to, overriding Microsoft Edge.

Registry editor method to uninstall Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft / Microsoft

Registry editor uninstall on Windows

The Registry Editor option essentially enables the uninstall ability in Microsoft Settings so you can proceed to uninstall Microsoft Edge as you would normally. This method will highlight the uninstall option in Settings once more, in theory allowing you to uninstall Microsoft Edge. However, some who have attempted to use this method claim it does not remove the browser; it just opens the uninstall option. It also seems to work for some users and not for others. So proceed with caution when using this method.

Step 1: To open the Windows Registry Editor, go to the Start search box, type “regedit,” and select Registry Editor. Select Yes in the pop-up window asking if you can make changes to your Windows system.

Step 2: The Windows Registry Editor is a large folder that serves as a tool for editing the Windows operating system and its applications.

Step 3: Double-click through the following sequence of folders to find the option you need to select:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Microsoft Edge

Step 4: Once in the Microsoft Edge folder, options will appear on the right. Double-click the NoRemove option and set the value to 0.

Step 5: Restart your computer.

Step 6: Back in Windows, open the Settings app and follow this path: Apps > Installed Apps > Microsoft Edge.

Step 7: Click the three-dot drop-down menu and the Uninstall option should be highlighted. Select it to begin the uninstall process.

Step 8: You should receive a pop-up confirming that you want to make changes to your device, Select OK. If the deletion process completes, Microsoft Edge will disappear from the settings list.

PowerShell command method to uninstall Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft / Microsoft

Microsoft Edge PowerShell command uninstall

The PowerShell Command allows you to make changes to the Windows operating system at the administrator level. This is what allows you to make edits to programs like Microsoft Edge because, as an administrator, PowerShell Command has deeper access than a standard user. However, this is an older workaround method, and some users have also reported it may not work as well as it has in the past. So proceed with caution when using this method.

Step 1: Access the Windows File Explorer by selecting the icon or pressing Win+E.

Step 2: Type or paste the following into the address bar of your Windows File Explorer and press Enter.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application

Step 3: Open the folder with a numbered name and the most recently modified date. Its name should have a sequence like this: 128.0.2729.76.

Step 4: Find the Installer folder, then right-click and select Copy as path.

Step 5: Open Terminal as an administrator (search Terminal in Start search, right-click, and select Run as Administrator) to open Windows PowerShell.

Step 6: Type cd, then paste the path you copied from the previous folder. If done correctly, it should resemble the following command.

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\128.0.2729.76\Installer”

Step 7: Press Enter and PowerShell will begin to run the command that will modify the Installer folder.

Step 8: Copy and paste the following command into PowerShell and press Enter.

  • .\setup.exe -uninstall -system-level -verbose-logging -force-uninstall*

Step 9: Once the command process is complete, Microsoft Edge should be removed from your desktop.

Another PowerShell command method to uninstall Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft / Microsoft

Microsoft Edge PowerShell Command uninstall, second option

This PowerShell Command is an alternate that you can try if the first option does not work. Similarly, both function by working through Microsoft’s administrator level. This method attempts to remove components of Microsoft Edge at the compressed package level. Meanwhile, the first method changes the browser installer functions, creating a force-uninstall. This second option is also an older workaround that may not work or could result in Edge returning in a future update. You should also proceed with caution when using this method.

Step 1: Open Terminal as an administrator (search Terminal in Start search, right-click, and select Run as Administrator)

Step 2: Type or paste the following command into PowerShell and press Enter to begin the process.

*get-appxpackage *edge**

Step 3: Find the option PackageFullName on the left side list and highlight the accompanying data on the right. It should look similar to the command below.

Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge.Stable_126.0.2641.99_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe

Step 4: Copy the text using Ctrl+C on your keyboard.

Step 5: Type “remove-appxpackage” at the bottom of the PowerShell window, then paste the command right after that text. It should resemble the following.

Remove-appxpackage Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge.Stable_126.0.2641.99_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe

Step 6: Press Enter and allow the command to run. Once complete, Microsoft Edge should be removed from your desktop.

Wise program method to uninstall Microsoft Edge.

WiseCleaner.com / WiseCleaner.com

Wise program uninstaller for Microsoft Edge

The Wise uninstaller option is one many people have been using to remove Microsoft Edge on Windows as other options either stop working or begin to cause problems on desktops. This method is also one that creates a force uninstall for Microsoft Edge. The meticulousness of trying to find and manually select the additional Edge-related files to delete increases the chance of causing a boot loop error if Microsoft attempts to reinstall the browser onto your desktop. However, removing all of the extra features doesn’t seem to be necessary. Overall, proceed with caution when using this method.

Step 1: Head to the Wise Program Uninstaller and select Free Download.

Step 2: Accept the terms and the download package will begin.

Step 3: The installer will pop up. Uncheck the first box and press Finish.

Step 4: The Wise Uninstaller program will open. You should see Microsoft Edge in the list of programs.

Step 5: Highlight Microsoft Edge and click Force uninstall. Be sure to create restore points before making any major change to your system.

Step 6: Click Select all in the next pop-up and then Remove to delete additional files.

Step 7: Highlight the Edge icon under browser extensions on the left and uninstall the files listed.

Step 8: Go through all of the tabs and find all of the Microsoft Edge-associated files and uninstall them.

Step 9: Restart your desktop and all Microsoft Edge icons should be removed, indicating that the program is uninstalled.

How to make sure Microsoft Edge doesn’t install itself again

There is a second step you can take to ensure that Microsoft Edge does not reinstall onto your desktop after you have uninstalled the browser. This method utilizes the Registry Editor from a previous uninstall method, with different steps to ensure that the already uninstalled program won’t return.

Step 1: To open the Windows Registry Editor, go to the Start search box, type “regedit,” and select Registry Editor. Select Yes in the pop-up window asking if you can make changes to your Windows system.

Step 2: Double-click through the following sequence of folders to find the option you need to select:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

Step 3: Once at the Microsoft folder, right-click the folder and select New>Key.

Step 4: This will create a new folder. Name the folder “EdgeUpdate.” It will be at the end of the list in the Microsoft folder.

Step 5: Now, right-click inside the EdgeUpdate folder on the right and select New>Key.

Step 6: This will create another new file. Name the file “DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium.”

Step 7: Double-click the option you just created. This will bring up a pop-up that you must edit. Change the value from 1 to 0 and then press OK.

Step 8: Restart your desktop. This process should prevent Microsoft Edge from reinstalling on your desktop again.

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films. Joe Gow, who had served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should be retained in a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission. The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote. Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning. Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leaders became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites. The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making pornographic films and speaking publicly about them and for the questions it raises about free speech rights. Gow argued that his videos and two e-books he and his wife Carmen have published about their experiences in adult films are protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract. Zach Greenberg, an attorney at the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to…” academic freedom and the right to free speech.” “FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputation,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.” Republican lawmakers already view the Wisconsin university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget. Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said because Gow hasn’t taught in 20 years, he will be assigned general education courses, but she refuses to allow him to return to teaching in any role. Gow was criticized in 2018 for inviting porn actress Nina Hartley to give a talk on campus. She received $5,000 from tuition fees for her performance. He came up with the idea of bringing her to campus after filming a pornographic video with her, the university said. Gow and his wife’s e-books were written under the pseudonyms “Monogamy with Benefits: How Porn Enhances Our Relationships” and “Married with Benefits.” Our real-life adventures in the adult industry.” But they also star in a YouTube channel called “Sexy Healthy Cooking,” in which the couple cooks meals with porn actors.

Is it worth going global?

Is it worth going global?

Global Entry is a Trusted Traveler program offered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As a full-time digital nomad, I can’t recommend anything more than Global Entry. I’ve been traveling internationally for years and have been saved by Global Entry on more than one occasion, especially when it came to making a good connection. Here you can find out whether Global Entry is worth it for you.

Benefits of Global Entry

The main benefit of Global Entry is expedited entry into the United States from abroad. If you are landing in the US after an international flight, you can use a dedicated Global Entry lane to get to a Global Entry kiosk. Most of the time, you don’t need to scan your passport – biometric information is used to clear you at immigration. Once the kiosk tells you you can proceed, you will go to an immigration officer who will welcome you back into the country.

In theory, that sounds a bit unnecessary. In practice, it’s one of my favorite and most valuable travel benefits. Queues at entry can be long. Therefore, avoiding this queue can be the difference between connecting or missing your flight. You don’t have to deal with any processing lines or paperwork.

Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck benefits, so you don’t need to apply for these programs separately. With TSA PreCheck, you can pass through a special security checkpoint without having to remove your shoes or belt or take liquids and large electronic devices from your luggage. With TSA PreCheck, you can get through security significantly faster, so you can arrive at the airport later than usual and easily pass through security before boarding your flight.

Details about costs and application process

The only downside to Global Entry is the lengthy registration process, but it is still quite straightforward. You can create a Trusted Traveler Programs account, complete the application, and pay the $100 non-refundable fee. Customs and Border Protection will then review your application and notify you whether your application has been conditionally approved or denied. About 80 percent of applications receive notification within two weeks, but the other 20 percent can take a year or longer.

After you receive conditional approval, you can schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. This is the most difficult part of the registration process. As the program becomes increasingly popular, available appointments fill up very quickly. So keep an eye out for vacancies. There are fewer Global Entry Enrollment Centers than TSA PreCheck locations, so you may have to travel to your appointment.

When I enrolled in 2019, I scheduled my appointment while traveling to Miami because my home airport was not an enrollment center. Bring your passport and another form of identification, such as a driver’s license or ID card, to your appointment.

After the interview, you will receive your card in the mail and can use the benefits immediately. You don’t have to bring your Global Entry card to the airport to use the program, but it can’t hurt.

Why global market entry is worthwhile

Global Entry is worthwhile for anyone who travels internationally at least somewhat regularly. The cost of re-enrolling is only slightly higher than re-enrolling in TSA PreCheck and the validity period is the same. You can spend a little more on your application and get all the great TSA PreCheck benefits and expedited entry into the US

If you plan to travel abroad even once a year, Global Entry is worth it. If not, it may be easier to apply for TSA PreCheck, but it just can’t hurt to sign up for Global Entry even if you don’t have any international travel planned. Make sure you already have a valid passport before submitting the application.

Tips for free worldwide entry

The best way to get Global Entry for free is to take advantage of credit card statement credits. Several credit cards offer this benefit, from Capital One’s Venture Rewards Card with a $95 annual fee to the AmEx Platinum Card with a $695 annual fee. Unfortunately, there are no other ways to get Global Entry for free other than credit cards.

Credit cards with an annual fee under $100:

These cards include:

  • Aeroplan® Credit Card: $95
  • Arvest Visa Signature® Credit Card: $0
  • Bank of America Premium Rewards Credit Card: $95

  • US Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card: $400

Business credit cards:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card: $199
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express: $695
  • Capital One Spark Miles for Business: $0 annual introductory fee for the first year, then $95

For most travelers, having a credit card that allows them to earn valuable points on travel purchases and reimburse the Global Entry registration fee is more than worthwhile. However, if you don’t want to apply for a new credit card, paying just $100 for five years of Global Entry and TSA PreCheck benefits is perfectly reasonable.
