I ask Eric: I can’t get over my spouse’s decades-old inappropriate affair

I ask Eric: I can’t get over my spouse’s decades-old inappropriate affair

From R. Eric Thomas

Updated: 16 minutes ago Published: 3 Hours ago

Dear Eric: I am 80 years old and have been married to the best woman possible for 33 years. We connect and are soulmates. My question is: Why have I been jealous lately of her affair with a 17 year old high school student even though she was 27 and a teacher? This was mentioned a long time ago in our past relationship report. Why has this reactive jealousy consumed me now? I want to know a lot of details about this encounter, but I realize that this will only delve me deeper into my obsession. My constant rumination is putting a strain on my side of our marriage. What can I do?

– Past repeat

Dear repeat: Whenever seemingly random events from the past enter my mind, I always think of the moment in a crime drama when a body floats to the surface of a swamp, only to be discovered years after the initial crime. Like the plot of a crime drama, these mysterious feelings always involve more questions than answers and are never really about what they initially seem to be about.

What your wife did wasn’t appropriate, but it doesn’t sound like this new obsession is about ethical violations. I don’t think it’s even about what happened in the past. If you have the resources, talking to a counselor or therapist about this fixation can help you get to the bottom of what you’re really stressed about. Maybe something is changing in your marriage, maybe you’re worried about yourself or your body. These things are normal and it is possible to change the way you think about them so that the movies stop playing in your head. Your local aging department may also be able to point you to free or low-cost counseling options for seniors

It’s also important to draw a clear line between what’s going on in your head and what’s going on in your marriage. Tell your wife that you can’t stop fixating on this event and also what you plan to do to remedy it. Don’t make your obsession their problem, but if there’s something in your marriage that needs to be addressed, disclosing what else is going on in your head will pave the way for a healthier discussion.

Dear Eric: About three years ago, a work friend “T” and I quickly became close. T profusely confessed her (platonic) love. I, an untrusting person who usually keeps others at a distance, thought I had found a new “best friend.”

But every now and then, and completely unexpectedly, T slips into “bad girl” mode.

She will make derogatory comments about my appearance, snap at me over seemingly trivial things, and act annoyed and angry during our encounter. In group situations, the irritation seems to focus on my behavior and not that of others.

We had an argument before, after which I ended the friendship. A year later we reconciled when she contacted us. But on a recent weekend trip together, their “bad girl” reared its ugly head. When I told her how it made me feel, she apologized and said it was because I wasn’t listening to her enough.

These episodes are also a painful reminder of my sister, who has a personality disorder and exhibits similar behavior towards me. I eventually had to distance myself from her for my own well-being.

It’s difficult to form close friendships in middle age, and I don’t want to give up my friendship with T, but I can’t continue to feel like her emotional punching bag. Any ideas on how we can handle this situation without losing the good part of our relationship?

– Undermine and over it

Dear Undermining: At some point before she met you, T realized that she should be aggressively mean when she didn’t get the attention she wanted. And she learned that to get someone to like her, she should bombard someone with love. None of these lessons are true, and now you are suffering because of them.

Worse, because T’s behavior mimics your sister’s, it’s likely causing you to put up with it longer than you otherwise would. This is a terrible situation to be in and I’m sorry.

Try talking to T in a non-mean girl moment while setting a clear boundary. Even if she doesn’t feel listened to, offensive language or behavior is a no-go. Tell her that she needs to control herself to maintain this relationship. Ask her if she understands how you feel about this and what her plan is to put your friendship on a healthier course.

If T doesn’t respect your boundaries, your safest bet is to limit contact with her. I hope she can be the best friend you deserve, but for your own well-being, she may be best as an arm’s length friend.

SpaceX wants to launch a mission that aims to return long-delayed Starliner astronauts

SpaceX wants to launch a mission that aims to return long-delayed Starliner astronauts

CNNA SpaceX mission set to launch Saturday aims to reunite the Boeing Starliner astronauts with the spacecraft that will bring them home. NASA’s Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have already been on the International Space Station more than 100 days longer than expected.

The mission, called Crew-9, is on track to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 1:17 p.m. ET on Saturday. NASA will stream the event live on its website.

The space agency previously postponed Thursday’s launch attempt and rolled the spacecraft back to its hangar as Hurricane Helene threatened Florida and other parts of the southeastern United States. After the danger passed, the mission teams reset everything at the launch pad.

“We got off to a little late start this morning,” Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, said at a news conference Friday. “We stand vertically on the pad.”

A backup launch window is also scheduled for Sunday at 12:54 p.m. ET in case weather or technical issues force a pause in Saturday’s attempt.

Unlike other routine trips that carry astronauts to and from the space station as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program – eight of which SpaceX has already launched – this mission’s outbound flight will carry only two crew members instead of four: NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Two other seats remain empty and are reserved for Williams and Wilmore for the spacecraft’s return flight in 2025.

The configuration is part of an ad hoc plan that NASA planned to implement in late August after the space agency decided the Starliner capsule was too risky to return with Williams and Wilmore. The two took the Starliner to the International Space Station in early June for a test flight that was expected to last about a week.

At launch, Hague and Gorbunov will be strapped into the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, nicknamed Freedom, which sits atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch vehicle comes to life, powered by nine massive engines located at its base to propel the 1.2 million pound (544,300 kilograms) rocket system into the air.

After about 2½ minutes, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket stops firing and separates from the second stage of the rocket. The second stage then ignites its own engine, further propelling the Crew Dragon capsule to more than 17,000 miles per hour (27,360 kilometers per hour) – or 22 times the speed of sound.

As the crew reaches faster speeds, the rocket’s first stage will retract itself and land on a ground platform in Florida so SpaceX can overhaul and reuse the vehicle.

Once the Crew Dragon capsule reaches orbital speed, the spacecraft will separate from the Falcon 9 second stage and begin maneuvering through orbit on its own, using onboard thrusters to gradually adjust its position, expected to arrive around 6 p.m can connect to the International Space Station Sunday, 5:30 p.m. ET.

Williams and Wilmore watched on September 6 as their Boeing-built capsule returned from the station without them.

Engineers had worked for months to understand the problems with helium leaks and engine failures that had affected the Starliner’s journey to the space station, and NASA ultimately said there were too many uncertainties and risks to allow the vehicle to transport the crew on its way could entrust the return journey. It’s unclear when Boeing’s Starliner might fly again.

NASA remains in the same situation it has been in for four years, with SpaceX the sole provider for the space agency’s Commercial Crew Program, which was designed to hand the job of crew rotations on the International Space Station to the private sector. (Boeing and SpaceX each received contracts in 2014, and SpaceX began operating routine flights in 2020, while Boeing struggled to advance Starliner development to completion.)

To bring Williams and Wilmore home, NASA turned to SpaceX – opting to remove two previously assigned members from its Crew-9 team to make room for the Starliner test pilots.

The space agency announced in late August that NASA astronauts Stephanie Wilson and Zena Cardman would be excluded from the mission. Cardman was slated for her first trip into space and would become commander of the Crew-9 mission.

Gorbunov, a Russian cosmonaut who got his seat through a ride-share agreement between NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos, remained on the crew. And Cardman handed over commander duties – the top position in a space flight – to Hague, who had previously been appointed pilot of Crew-9.

“Handing over the helm to (Hague) is both heartbreaking and an honor. “Nick and Alex are truly an outstanding team and they will be ready to step up,” Cardman said in a post on the social platform X, formerly Twitter, after the announcement.

“I only wish (Wilson), Nick, Alex and I could fly together, but we choose without hesitation to be part of something much bigger than ourselves.” Ad astra per aspera. Come on, Crew 9.”

Williams and Wilmore have now integrated into everyday life on the space station. The duo transitioned from a shorter test mission schedule to roles as full-time crew members, with Williams taking on the role of commander in the orbiting laboratory.

Gorbunov and Hague will join them after they dock with the space station on Sunday.

Asked if he was having a hard time adjusting to the prospect of waiting months longer to return home, Wilmore said during a Sept. 13 press conference from the space station, “I’m not going to worry about it.” I mean, it has no use at all. So my transition was – maybe not instantaneous – but it was pretty close.”

Williams said she misses her family and is disappointed to have missed some family events this fall and winter, but added, “This is my happy place. “I love being up here in space. It’s just fun. You know, every day you do something that works, quote it or unquote it, you can turn it on its head. You can do it sideways so it adds a little different perspective.”

Megalopolis Movie Ending Explained and What’s the Immersive Experience?

Megalopolis Movie Ending Explained and What’s the Immersive Experience?

You wonder if Megalopolis has a post-credits scene? We’ll tell you right here: There is no mid- or post-credits scene.

Full spoilers for the film follow here…

Francis Ford Coppola self-financed, prone to controversy Science fiction spectacle Megalopolis has finally arrived, and although critics are divided on the film (at the time of writing, it has one 50% of critics score on Rotten Tomatoes) there’s no denying that it’s full of mind-blowing moments.

This could even include purchasing tickets to the film, where consumers will find they have two options: Megalopolis: The Ultimate Experience and regular Megalopolis. Let’s take a closer look at what the so-called “immersive” Ultimate Experience is all about and what the film’s ending means… and more!

What is Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis?

Directing classics like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and yes, even Bram Stoker’s DraculaCoppola deserves some leeway when we approach any of the filmmaker’s new projects. He also attracted a full cast of actors for “Megalopolis,” starring Adam Driver as the future Cesar Catilina’s architect, Giancarlo Esposito as Cesar’s rival mayor Franklyn Cicero, Nathalie Emmanuel as Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter and Cesar’s lover, and Aubrey Starring Plaza as Wow are Platinum, part financial reporter/part Access Hollywood host, and Shia LaBeouf as Clodio, a cousin of Cesar who craves his power and influence. Other familiar faces appearing in supporting or very small roles include Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman and Dustin Hoffman.

Francis Ford Coppola and Adam Driver on set.

Set in a futuristic version of New York City, now called “New Rome,” Megalopolis details the details of Cesar’s battles with Mayor Cicero (and others) over how best to develop the city and help its masses and how to do so The best way to rebuild is after a Russian satellite fell from the sky and destroyed large parts of the skyline. In an on-screen title card, Coppola presents the film as a “fable” but is clearly trying to reconcile the fall of the Roman Empire with the current development of the United States.

Or so.

Honestly, Megalopolis is as confusing as it is ambitious, convoluted in parts but visually cool in others. But what does it all add up to in the end? Read on…

The ending of Megalopolis explained

Did I mention that Driver’s Cesar can stop time? Yes, amid all the Shakespeare quotes and psychedelic trips that take place in the film, Cesar has the unique ability to stop time. Normally just Robert Hays and residents of the Twilight zone can pull off this trick, but when we first meet Cesar, he barely saves himself as he climbs off the edge of the Chrysler Building by… yes, freezing time with just a few words.

He’ll use this trick from time to time, but in reality it’s his discovery of something called Megalon that is his true magic. This super element allows Cesar, as head of the city’s “Design Authority,” to create a vision of the utopia he wants to transform New Rome into. (This vision kind of looks like a planet Doctor Strange would visit, but whatever.) This contrasts with the mayor’s more strict approach to improving the city – namely, he prefers the old-fashioned way of not changing much. And then there’s Voight’s rich guy Crassus, whose money is needed for the vision of whoever wins.

Cesar asks Julia to stop time, which she does… but her baby is strangely unaffected and continues to move while everyone else is frozen.

Over the course of the film there are many verbal and positional battles, culminating in an assassination attempt on Cesar in which half of his face is blown off. But Megalon is used to reconstruct him, resulting in a glowing half-face that’s even weirder than the scenes in which the characters are Strictly speaking stumble.

However, Cesar has other problems, namely that Shia LaBeouf’s Clodio has teamed up with Aubrey Plaza’s Wow to close Cesar’s bank accounts, while also forcing Crassus (whom Wow married earlier in the film in a futuristic Coppola wedding sequence) into retirement, to take control of his assets. Clodio has also developed a personality cult directed against Cesar, thanks to his promises that he will improve the lives of the city’s common and oppressed citizens, even if he doesn’t actually care about them.

Aubrey Plaza as Wow Platinum, part financial reporter, part Access Hollywood host.

Crassus appears to have suffered a stroke at one point, but we soon learn that he was faking how badly he was affected by the incident. This leads to Wow and Clodio being surprised in Crassus’ bedroom as he pulls out a bow and arrow and kills his wife. An injured Clodio escapes, but he is apparently murdered by a rampaging mob of his followers who chain him up.

With Wow’s bloodied body still lying on his bedroom floor, Crassus decides that he wants to be remembered as a “good man” and decides to finance Cesar’s utopia plans. Meanwhile, Nathalie Emmanuel’s Julia has married Cesar, despite the protests of her father, the mayor, and they have a child together. Cesar gives an impassioned speech to the people of the city, and the mayor realizes that he can no longer fight Cesar – especially now that he has Crassus’ support. And what’s more, they are now related by marriage!

zero
Cesar Catiline (Adam Driver) and Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel).

As the film nears its end, Cesar, Julia and their baby are joined on stage by the mayor and his wife as the New Rome crowd cheers them on. The stage is set for Cesar’s utopia (there’s a magical hiking trail and everything!). Cesar asks Julia to stop time (she seems to have the ability now too), which she does… but her baby is strangely unaffected and continues to move while everyone else is frozen. A title card appears with a pledge of allegiance…to planet Earth. And then the credits roll.

Why isn’t the baby frozen like everyone else? As with much of Megalopolis, this is probably a more metaphorical reading of events. Cesar and Julia’s child represents the future they have worked to improve for all the generations that will one day live in New Rome, and so the ball is now in their court – starting with this baby!

What is the Immersive Megalopolis: The Ultimate Experience?

For decades, Coppola has wanted to change the way films are produced and distributed. His production company American Zoetrope (formerly known as Zoetrope Studios) was founded as a way to work outside of the Hollywood system, and although things never quite worked out for the filmmaker for various reasons, we still see him experimenting now with Megalopolis.

In the Ultimate Experience, a “live participant” actually appears in front of the theater to interact with the driver on the screen.

Megalopolis: The Ultimate Experience is an option in some theaters across the country, which includes a unique version of a scene in the film in which Adam Driver’s character speaks to offscreen reporters. In the regular version of the film, voiceovers play these reporters. But in the “Ultimate Experience,” what Lionsgate calls “live attendees” actually appear at the front of the theater to interact with Driver on screen and ask questions while the filmed image of Driver responds. Some of these “live participants” also reportedly have a spotlight or microphone for their dialogue.

Indiewire provides a good breakdown of this interesting aspect of Megalopolis’ release if you’d like to learn more. You can also see what it looks like in the video here:

Does Megalopolis have a post-credits scene?

No, as already mentioned, there are no post- or mid-credits scenes in Megalopolis.

But what did you think of the film? It’s a real doozy, isn’t it? Let’s discuss in the comments!

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin fires the porn industry’s former chancellor, who wanted to stay on as a professor

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films. Joe Gow, who had served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should be retained in a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission. The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote. Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning. Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leaders became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites. The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making pornographic films and speaking publicly about them and for the questions it raises about free speech rights. Gow argued that his videos and two e-books he and his wife Carmen have published about their experiences in adult films are protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract. Zach Greenberg, an attorney at the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to…” academic freedom and the right to free speech.” “FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputation,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.” Republican lawmakers already view the Wisconsin university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget. Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said because Gow hasn’t taught in 20 years, he will be assigned general education courses, but she refuses to allow him to return to teaching in any role.
