NORTHVILLE, Mich — Northville’s mayor released a statement Thursday mourning the death of the 12-year-old who died after a tree fell on him.

Northville Mayor Brian P. Turnbull said he knew the boy because he met him and his sister many times for lemonade outside their home. The mayor said the boy, whom he identified as Declan Carter, had great academic, athletic and social potential.

Declan died from his injuries after a tree fell on him during his school’s field trip on Thursday, September 26 at Howell Nature Center.

“All of our appointed and elected employees in Northville are like family. “A loss is felt by everyone and the rest of our close-knit community,” Turnbull said.

Turnbull is asking the governor’s office to fly City Hall flags at half-staff in Declan’s honor.

Northvillians,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you this morning with the sad news of one of our young Northvillians who had his whole life ahead of him.
Tragically, a tree fell on sixth-grader Declan Carter during a field trip from Our Lady of Victory School to the Howell Nature Center yesterday and he was airlifted to Mott’s Children Hospital at the University of Michigan. Everyone did what they could for Declan, but his energetic life was suddenly interrupted.
I had the pleasure of meeting Declan as I had often visited him and his sister Georgia outside their house, especially for a lemonade on hot summer afternoons. He had great academic, athletic (as one of the best runners in the area) and social potential as part of the fabric and DNA of Northville.
All of us at City Hall send our thoughts and prayers to the family, including his father John Carter (an esteemed city council leader), his mother Liz Carter and his sisters Georgia and Ainsley.
It is up to us to keep Declan’s spirit and memory alive in our hearts and to always have the Carter family in our prayers from this day forward. All of Northville’s appointed and elected employees are like family. The loss is felt by everyone and the rest of our close community.
I have asked the Governor’s Office to allow us to fly our flag at half-staff at City Hall in memory of our beloved Northerner Declan Carter, and I am asking everyone in the Ville to do the same.
Northvillians, I urge you to come together to support the Carter family and I encourage you to hug everyone close to you today…life is precious.

Shannon Jones, who landed in Anchorage with five other passengers on a Dena’ina Air Taxi flight on Tuesday, was unaware that the plane’s front landing gear was malfunctioning.

But Jones, a school principal traveling from the village of Koliganek in southwest Alaska for a conference, knew something was wrong when the plane flew low over Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and then began circling.

Dena’ina Air Taxi identified the pilot as Doug Ferguson, a veteran aviator who flew his final flight for the company Tuesday before retiring.

According to Josh Jacko, president and owner of Dena’ina Air Taxi, Ferguson flew the Beechcraft King Air over the airport to give ground crew a visual confirmation of the landing gear’s status. Ferguson also told company officials that a possible emergency had occurred during the flight, he said.

The pilot “went through all emergency checklists more than once” and then informed passengers that they “may land with the landing gear not fully extended,” Jacko said in an email Wednesday. “That takes time, so circling above us.”

Jones said Ferguson warned passengers that the flight would be a bit bumpy upon landing.

Still, she said, everything was surprisingly “normal” until the last moment. No injuries or fuel leaks were reported, authorities said. In a prepared statement, airport officials called the pilot’s “skillful handling of the emergency situation” key to avoiding a more serious outcome.

“He was a very calm, great pilot,” Jones said.

Ferguson, who has been flying for Dena’ina and TransNorthern Aviation for five years, has 46 years of Alaska flying experience and more than 26,000 flight hours, Jacko said.

“He’s great,” he said.

The flight departed from Merrill Field and made stops in Pedro Bay, Koliganek and Ekwok before returning to Anchorage.

The emergency landing response began just before 3 p.m. Tuesday when airport police and fire departments responded to Runway 7L for a report of the incoming aircraft that “reported landing gear issues,” said department spokesman Cpl. Steve Heilman. The airport’s aircraft rescue and firefighting units were searching nearby for possible injuries or fuel leaks, he said.

The crews, waiting for a possible disaster, said the pilot’s flying skills and calm demeanor saved the day, Heilman said. “He spun the props and rode the back wheel as long as he could.”

Then, when the front end of the plane finally touched down, the nose gear collapsed, he said.

Jones said the landing felt almost normal until the front dropped and then a skid began.

“It was almost like slow motion,” she remembers. “Oh, we look at the sky and then slowly at the ground. He did great. It was for the textbook thing. If he had done something differently, who knows what the result would have been.”

The pilot, six passengers and a dog in a crate all exited the plane safely, authorities said.

Heilman said there were no fuel leaks and no injuries were reported.

Dena’ina Air Taxi ensured the aircraft was moved from the runway to its hangar without causing any further damage to the aircraft or the runway, according to an update from the airport police and fire departments.

It was not immediately clear what caused the landing gear to fail. Jacko said the company is still investigating.

Jones, who like many rural Alaskans has to fly every few months, said she was returning home on Sunday on another Dena’ina Air Taxi flight.

“He did a great job,” she said of Ferguson. “I will fly with the same company. It’s just part of life out here.”

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday to fire a communications professor who wanted to keep his job after he was fired as chancellor of one of the system’s campuses for producing pornographic films.

Joe Gow, who served as UW-La Crosse’s chancellor for nearly 17 years, argued last week that he should retain a teaching position on campus. But the university’s lawyers argued that he behaved unethically, violated the terms of his employment contract, damaged the university’s reputation and compromised its mission.

The regents met in closed session Friday morning before publicly voting to fire Gow. There was no public discussion before the board vote.

Gow said he is considering filing a lawsuit to keep his teaching job. He did not immediately respond to a message Friday morning.

Gow has been on paid leave from his faculty position since the regents fired him as chancellor in 2023, shortly after university leadership became aware of the videos posted on pornographic websites.

The case has drawn national attention both for the salaciousness of a high-ranking university official making and speaking publicly about pornographic films and for the questions it raises about free speech rights.

Gow argued that his videos and two e-books that he and his wife Carmen published about their experiences in adult films were protected by the First Amendment. The university’s attorney argued that Gow’s videos themselves were legal, but that they were not protected by his employment contract.

Zach Greenberg, an attorney with the free speech advocacy group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, called the regents’ decision “a major blow to academic freedom and the right to free expression.”

“FIRE has said time and time again: Public universities cannot sacrifice the First Amendment to protect their reputations,” Greenberg said. “We are disappointed that the UW has caved to donors and politicians by alienating a tenured professor.”

Republican lawmakers already view Wisconsin’s university system as a liberal incubator. Last year they forced the company to scale back its diversity initiatives. System President Jay Rothman has tried to avoid further angering conservatives as he seeks approval for an $855 million increase in the next state budget.

Gow’s hope of teaching in the classroom again was rejected by his department head, Linda Dickmeyer. She said that because Gow had not taught in 20 years, he would be assigned general education courses, but she declined to allow him to return to teaching in any capacity.

Gow was criticized in 2018 for inviting porn actress Nina Hartley to speak on campus. She received $5,000 from tuition fees for her performance. The university said he came up with the idea of ​​bringing her to campus after filming a pornographic video with her.

After being hit by injury bugs during their late playoff push last season, the Sacramento Kings have already encountered a hurdle heading into training camp.

The Kings have announced that Trey Lyles suffered a left groin strain and Jordan McLaughlin suffered a Grade 2 right ankle sprain, both during offseason workouts.

Lyles will be reassessed in about three weeks, McLaughlin in two. Both players will miss the start of training camp, if not all of it.

Last season, Lyles missed 24 games due to injury, including the first 13 contests of the year. With a severe lack of offensive depth in Sacramento, the Kings cannot afford to lose valuable pieces for an extended period of time.

McLaughlin, whom the Kings signed in free agency this offseason, has been brought in as a valuable backup point guard to De’Aaron Fox, especially while rookie Devin Carter recovers from shoulder surgery.

Now that Kevin Huerter, Carter, McLaughlin and Lyles are all likely to miss training camp, other players in the Sacramento locker room will have to step in. With Lyles likely to miss training camp and the start of the preseason, Jalen McDaniels or undrafted rookie Isaiah Crawford could make the most of the opportunity.

As for the McLaughlin injury, we could see sophomore guard Colby Jones get some backup point guard reps in training camp or undrafted rookie Boogie Ellis capitalize on his position.

While it’s a downer to see a spate of injuries before training camp, it could open the door for Sacramento’s young core to improve.

MILWAUKEE — About 36 hours after escaping a natural disaster in the South, the Mets caused a debacle of their own making, imploding minutes into a crucial game with ace Sean Manaea on the mound. The Mets are still in control of their own destiny after their opening game loss here, although that’s not exactly a huge blessing considering how they’re playing in their biggest game of the season.

The current scorecard for the trip that will decide this season is as follows: Braves one win, Brewers one win, Hurricane Helene two rainouts, Mets two no-show games.

This certainly wasn’t the time for one of the worst performances of the season, but that’s exactly what it was. There were almost no encouraging events.

Manaea didn’t look like himself at all, and the Mets’ lineup didn’t come together nearly enough against Frankie Montas and Co., who shut out the Yankees. Additionally, Mets star Francisco Lindor, playing his first full game in two weeks, doesn’t look 100 percent, no matter what anyone says. He just seemed to stick it out.

To add insult to injury, noted Mets tormentor Rhys Hoskins once again played the villain, hitting a grand slam in the first inning of the Mets’ 8-4 loss. Not that anyone gets to pick their winners, but Hoskins has already been reviled in the Mets clubhouse.

This Hoskins hate started when he was back in Philly, but he killed the Mets in the first week of that season when he won a game with his hitting heroics after hitting Jeff McNeil (remember him?) with a hard one sliding into second base had upset. Then, six months later, he dared to start on that final weekend of the season. His two-out, two-strike home run to left basically decided everything after 20 minutes.

The Mets have two games left here and a chance. But they have to take it up.

Give plenty of credit to the up-and-coming Brewers from arguably the smallest MLB market (Milwaukee and Cincinnati have held that title for years). They field, they run the bases (they stole at will on Friday) and they win, securing the No. 3 seed and home field for their wild-card series — whether they play the Mets or someone else .

The game was almost meaningless for Milwaukee, yet they started with their “A” lineup and played close to their “A” game. Good for you. But bad for the Mets.

For the team from Queens, this attempt was almost a complete failure. They were playing in a competition they “had to win” (coach Carlos Mendoza) after fleeing Atlanta, and they didn’t give themselves a chance.

However, I can’t say they didn’t show fire. Mendoza was ejected for freaking out home plate umpire Ramon De Jesus after De Jesus called out Francisco Alvarez on a pitch that appeared below the strike zone with two outs and two outs in the fourth. That happened after Alvarez — who later left with back spasms — hopped around and threw his helmet to the ground.

The whole team doesn’t seem quite right either. But even though this journey has been nothing short of disastrous so far, remarkably her circumstances are still not entirely dire. They just need to beat one of the Braves or Diamondbacks, who have similar records and other weaknesses. The Braves can pitch, but they can’t hit. The D’backs are the opposite: good hitters but suspect pitchers.

The Mets came back from an 0-5 start and 11 games under .500 and prepared for a possible playoff appearance. But they’re returning to their previous games at the worst possible time and simply can’t play like they did on Friday when they expect to get where they want to go.
