Vice President Harris outlines “orderly and secure” immigration plan, angering Trump in first border stop since his nomination

DOUGLAS, Ariz. – Vice President Harris made her first appearance at the southern border since becoming the Democratic presidential candidate on Friday, delivering a speech in which she vowed to crack down on illegal immigration while sharply criticizing former President Trump.

“Anyone who crosses our borders unlawfully will be arrested and deported and not allowed to re-enter for five years,” Harris told an enthusiastic crowd in the gymnasium at Cochise County College’s Douglas campus, about two miles from the southern border.

“We will bring tougher criminal charges against repeat offenders and if someone fails to apply for asylum at a legal point of entry and instead crosses our border illegally, they will be denied asylum. However, we understand that many people are desperate to emigrate to the United States. Our system must be orderly and secure.

HARRIS VISITS KEY BORDER STATE AS IMMIGRATION DATA TRIGGER INVESTIGATION: A TIMELINE

Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Harris greets his supporters during a campaign rally at the Cochise College Douglas campus in Douglas, Arizona, on Friday.

Harris, touting her career as the border state’s attorney general, claimed that Trump earlier this year “shaked through” the “strongest border security law we’ve seen in decades” and argued that if it were law today, it would lead to “results “would lead. for the country.

“I promise you that as president of the United States, I will bring it up again and proudly sign it into law,” she said.

Harris also promised to “understand how solutions emerge” and “think outside the box, and I will use common-sense approaches and new techniques to get the job done.”

“Because I know that transnational gangs could come across the border and trade weapons, drugs and people[n’t] “We don’t care who anyone voted for in the last election,” she said.

Harris added: “I will increase support for frontline law enforcement, more staff, more training and more technology, including 100 new inspection systems that can detect fentanyl hidden in vehicles.”

Fentanyl was a common message in Harris’ speech, which she delivered after being introduced by Theresa Guerrero, whose son Jacob was killed by fentanyl poisoning at age 31.

“We will ensure that our ports of entry, including airports and seaports, have additional state-of-the-art technology to detect fentanyl and the chemical tools used to produce it,” Harris said. “I will also double the Justice Department’s resources to extradite and prosecute transnational criminal organizations and cartels.”

Harris added: “The United States is a sovereign nation, and I believe we have a duty to set and enforce rules at our border. And I take this responsibility very seriously. We are also a nation of immigrants. “The United States has been enriched by generations of people who have come from every corner of the world to contribute to our country and become part of the American story.”

Harris Douglas AZ

Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Harris visits the U.S.-Mexico border with John Modlin, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector, in Douglas, Arizona, on Friday.

Harris claimed in her speech that Trump has done “nothing” to fix our “broken immigration system” during his four years as president.

“He hasn’t solved the shortage of immigration judges,” Harris said. “He hasn’t solved the shortage of border officials. He has not created any legitimate avenues into our country. “He has done nothing to address an outdated asylum system and has not worked with other governments in our hemisphere to address what is clearly also a regional challenge.”

“He separated families. He has torn infants from their mothers’ arms, put children in cages and tried to remove protections for dreamers. It has made the challenges at the border even worse. And he still is. And he is still stoking the flames of fear.” And let me be clear, that is not the job of a leader. And that is indeed the renunciation of leadership.

Harris signaled that she would find a path to citizenship for “Dreamers,” who she said are “American in every way.”

Harris told the crowd she would work with Democrats and Republicans to solve the border problem and said she opposed the “false choice” between securing the border and “creating a safe, orderly and humane immigration system.”

“We can and we must do both. We have to do both.”

Shortly before the speech, Harris walked across the southern border with two Border Patrol agents who briefed her on “their efforts to combat human traffickers and transnational criminal organizations,” according to the White House.

After that briefing, Harris drove a motorcade to the Raul H. Castro Port of Entry in Douglas, where she was briefed on efforts to stem the flow of fentanyl at the border.

Harris’ speech outlining how she will combat illegal immigration comes as millions of illegal immigrants flooded the southern border during her tenure as vice president, drawing frequent criticism from Trump, Republicans and the Border Patrol union caused.

“After years of not only ignoring the problem but helping to create it, Vice President Kamala is finally heading to the border,” the National Border Patrol Council said in a statement ahead of Harris’ visit. “This is nothing more than her checking the box, but what it really is is a slap in the face to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day, and also a slap in the face to the American public . Where was she?

Fox News Digital reported earlier this year that at least 7.2 million illegal immigrants had entered the United States under President Biden, a number that exceeds the population of 36 states.

Harris faced criticism just hours before her speech after Immigration and Customs Enforcement released data showing that tens of thousands of illegal immigrants with sex offenses and murder convictions are currently on the loose in the United States

Fox News polls released this week showed Trump with a 3-point lead in Arizona, after Harris had a one-point lead last month.

The 3-point shift in registered voters is largely due to movement among young voters, women and Hispanics.

Polls have also shown that the vast majority of Americans believe the southern border is a “problem” after nearly four years of the Biden-Harris administration, and recent Fox News polls show that Americans favor Trump by more than 10 on the economy percent more trust than Harris.

From passion to profit: OpenAI’s recent restructuring shows that the AI competition is about who has the deepest pockets

From passion to profit: OpenAI’s recent restructuring shows that the AI competition is about who has the deepest pockets

  • This is an excerpt from the Insider Today newsletter.

OpenAI is open to some changes.

The world’s best-known startup is reportedly seeking to reorganize into a for-profit charitable corporation and end control of the company by its nonprofit board.

The process would also include Providing equity capital to CEO Sam Altmanwho currently has no stake in the startup worth $150 billion. Altman could reportedly get a 7% stake, which would be worth about $10.5 billion based on OpenAI’s new valuation.

But wait, there’s more!

The news of the possible restructuring followed Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI announces her exit from the startup. The Tesla alum spent over six years at OpenAI, including a brief stint as interim CEO during Altman’s failed ouster last November. Employees reportedly responded to the news with a post a “WTF” emoji on Slack.

The New York Times reported on Murati in March expressed concerns to the board about Altman’s leadership style before the fall. However, Murati’s lawyer said at the time that the Times’ reporting about her involvement in Altman’s ouster was “completely false.”

And Murati wasn’t the only board departure announced Wednesday. Barret Zoph, the company’s vice president of research, and Bob McGrew, OpenAI’s chief research officer, are also leaving the startup. Altman announced on.

There have been significant changes in OpenAI’s leadership ranks in the nearly year since the board tried to oust Altman. Many of OpenAI’s C-level executives have left. The company is now has undertaken a hiring boom in other areasincluding non-technical roles in legal and advocacy work.

But such is life at OpenAI, which one VC investor described to Business Insider’s Lakshmi Varanasi as “the most fascinating and terrifying company of our time.”

This is a point that even Altman acknowledged to some extent in a memo to employees detailing the departures.

“I’m not saying it’s normal for it to happen so abruptly, of course, but we are not a normal company,” Altman wrote.

The disruption of OpenAI is happening as the AI race comes into focus.

Some of OpenAI’s biggest competitors – Alphabet, Amazon, Meta – also happen to be some of the most valuable companies in the world. And given the high cost of AI development – from hardware to talent – it’s important to have deep pockets.

Therefore, it is no surprise that OpenAI wants to make itself as attractive as possible to potential investors to ensure that money continues to flow. According to Reuters, which broke the news, OpenAI’s new structure would be similar to that of rival startups Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI. (Musk, by the way, was happy to take a swipe at Altman about recent executive departures.)

But considering OpenAI was built on the premise of investors wouldn’t If you influence it, the move will likely still turn heads. Altman, for his part, responded to a question in Congress in 2023 about his lack of equity by saying he was “doing this because I love it.”

Of course, it’s not a crime to want to profit from your work. But OpenAI’s pivot is another example of how what it presents to the public doesn’t always seem to match what it’s trying to do privately.

However, the exes got back together several times in the last month, proving that their divorce was amicable.

In a surprising turn of events, an eyewitness exclusively shared that the former couple “held hands and kissed” during their time together.

Less than a week later, the “On the Floor” singer and Oscar winner attended her children’s back-to-school night, where they were reportedly “warm.”

Despite their seemingly positive relationship, the two were photographed arriving at celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser’s office in Los Angeles on Monday.

At the time, an insider confirmed to Page Six that the stars were “still moving forward with the divorce” and were “working out the financial details amicably.”

Regarding her PDA-filled lunch with her kids, the Hollywood source explained, “Divorce is never easy, but Jennifer doesn’t want to be selfish about it.”

Lopez cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split and stated that their official separation date was April 26.

The former couple did not sign a prenup before their wedding in July 2022, meaning they will have to sort through their marital assets and make a joint decision about separating assets and finances.

Although they reportedly accepted a $64 million offer, the alleged deal fell through.

“But why? What’s the point?” Lakewood residents are fed up with yard theft

“But why? What’s the point?” Lakewood residents are fed up with yard theft

LAKEWOOD, Ohio – Police are searching for the person who stole garden items and Little Free Libraries in Lakewood and say they have seen an increase in thefts.

Last month we told you about cleaning up the Little Free Libraries.

Lakewood residents are stunned and frustrated by petty free library thefts

RELATED: Lakewood residents are stunned and frustrated by petty free library thefts

Now they’re targeting garden items, including a bench and a woman’s fairy garden.

According to Danielle Antosz, who owns a fairy garden, a fairy garden is meant to be a whimsical place that inspires curiosity and conveys magical happiness.

“There are just so many bad things happening in the world and something so small that it makes people smile. “The kids like to come and look at it… it makes me happy, like it’s just supposed to bring joy,” Antosz said.

Earlier this week someone decided to get this out of their front yard.

“We had a dinosaur that ate dwarves… and they took that. They took a rabbit with them. I honestly lost track of all the stuff they took, but three or four of the larger items,” Antosz said.

Antosz’s garden used to have several large pieces. Now only small decorations remain. She had a message for the person in charge.

“But why? What’s the point? I hope it was worth it. I hope you stub your toe on everything,” Danielle said.

This isn’t the first theft in Lakewood.

In August, the Little Free Libraries – including Antosz’s – were cleaned up. News 5 spoke with a man whose entire library was stolen. After he replaced them, they returned and took his bench.

“It seems to me like a lot of times perpetrators are walking around, seeing things in people’s yards and just going up and taking them,” said Lakewood Police Capt. Gary Stone.

Stone says they’ve seen an increase in yard thefts recently.

“Some of this seems like theft, where the person can sell some of these things for money at a later date. It can also be young people who dare and do things like that,” said Stone.

The department is increasing patrols and keeping an eye out for people walking around with suspicious items to prevent thefts.

Antosz is still shocked that someone would do something like that.

“Honestly, it broke my heart. I know it’s a small thing, but it’s not. There is no value,” Antosz said.

She posted about the theft on Facebook, to which the community reacted with outrage. People began donating items to bring their enchanted space back to life.

“People have been coming over all week, which makes me really happy,” Antosz said.

She has transformed her garden by installing cameras to protect her garden. She stamped the covers of the books in her Little Free Library and crossed out the barcodes so they couldn’t be resold.

Police say it’s a good idea to conduct surveillance, keep an eye on your garden plots and report any theft to the police.

AL Central standings explained: Updated Tigers, Twins, Royals playoff odds and tiebreakers for 2024 MLB round

AL Central standings explained: Updated Tigers, Twins, Royals playoff odds and tiebreakers for 2024 MLB round

The much-maligned AL Central is making a comeback.

The division hasn’t sent a team to the ALCS since 2016 and trails the AL East and AL West due to years of issues with the Royals and Tigers, among others, but three teams are expected to represent the AL Central in the postseason in October.

One thing has already been decided. The Guardians are in the playoffs after surviving a disappointing 2023 season and riding this year’s fast start to the division title. At least one and almost certainly two division rivals will join them in what could make for a chaotic final weekend in baseball.

Here’s a look at how the AL Central is faring as the season nears its end.

SN’s MLB Headquarters: Live MLB Scores | Updated MLB Rankings | Complete MLB schedule

AL Central playoff image

AL Central standings

  1. Guardian92-67 (.579)
  2. Royals85-74 (.535)
  3. tiger85-74 (.535)
  4. Gemini82-77 (.516)
  5. White Sox39-120 (.241)

Two things are certain: The Guardians have already clinched the AL Central and the White Sox are out – it might be best to leave it at that.

Otherwise, here’s what each team needs to do to make it to the postseason.

The magic number of tigers

The Tigers’ magic number entering Friday is 1. That means Detroit can clinch victory as early as Saturday, but it would require help from the Twins.

With three games remaining and a magic number of just two, the Tigers control their own destiny. In fact, they could lose a game and still be in control of their destiny.

Detroit is also in the running for the AL’s No. 5 seed, but to do so they would have to finish with a better record than the Royals, who hold the direct tiebreaker.

The royals’ magic number

The Royals’ magic number, which arrives on Thursday, is also 1.

It wasn’t long ago that Kansas City actually sat atop the AL Central for a day and looked like it would secure at least a postseason spot long before the final weekend of the season, but a losing streak of seven games that put paid to the Royals’ hopes.

However, Kansas City bounced back against the Nationals, and a Twins loss to the Marlins on Thursday helped the cause. The Royals now have their fate in their own hands and are still in 5th place thanks to the tiebreaker over the Tigers. Kansas City can claim victory as early as Friday if they keep winning.

Magic number of Gemini

The Twins don’t have a magic number since they’re not currently in a postseason spot. Your elimination number is 1and they will need help from either the Royals or the Tigers if they want to make the postseason.

Minnesota spent much of the second half in playoff position, but a recent decline combined with Detroit’s resurgence means the Twins could be eliminated as early as Friday if they don’t find their rhythm.

On the bright side, the Twins have the head-to-head tie with the Tigers and Royals, meaning they would emerge victorious in both two-team and three-team scenarios.

MORE: Complete wild card picture, MLB playoff round

Are the Tigers in the playoffs?

The Tigers have not yet secured a spot in the playoffs, but they control their own destiny with a 3.0 game lead and can clinch a spot as early as Friday.

Are the Twins in the playoffs?

The Twins are currently out of a postseason berth and are 3.0 games behind the Tigers and Royals. Minnesota will need help from at least one of these two division rivals to get back into play and secure a ticket to October.

The Twins are in the head-to-head tiebreaker against both the Royals and Tigers, meaning they would prevail even in a three-team matchup.

Are the Royals in the playoffs?

The Royals haven’t secured a playoff spot yet, but they control their own destiny and currently hold the No. 5 seed in the AL. Kansas City can clinch victory as early as Friday with a little help from the Twins.

Budget 2025: | Irish Independent

Budget 2025: | Irish Independent

It made for good political theater and had the irresistible advantage of attracting public goodwill that could be cashed in and converted into votes.

But a spate of leaks has raised high public expectations that are likely to be fulfilled. The state is sitting on such a bonanza that the Fiscal Advisory Council’s (FAC) appeals for caution are likely to be lost in the stampede aimed at loosening the state’s coffers.

Even before Apple’s $14 billion gold verdict came down, the 2025 budget promised to be big. The government has already launched a planned package of permanent and temporary measures worth over 10 billion euros. The temptation to use this as an electoral springboard must be overwhelming.

There is no evidence that the Cabinet took up the views of William McChesney Martin, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 1955. He famously said, “The Federal Reserve is in the position of regulator that ordered the removal of the punch bowl” just as the party was really heating up.”

If there is such a supervisor in the cabinet, they have their heads down. But the FAC’s concerns are rooted in reality. With the economy already running at full speed, there is a risk of overheating from additional fuel. There is also a fear that we may have developed an unhealthy dependence on massive corporate growth and that if the harvest fails, the pantry could be left empty.

The ESRI takes a broader view with one caveat: the government must not shy away from introducing residential property tax.

The think tank sees this as the only effective tool available to policymakers to make progress in reducing housing costs. Otherwise, she believes the current spending level is sustainable.

After the crash, the state was unable to spend money for several years. In view of the rapidly growing population and the dramatic increase in production, she advocates a corresponding easing of the state budget.

Provided that spending is proportionate to national production and within reason, we need not worry too much. Furthermore, the workers who produced the surplus can rightly expect to benefit from it. However, it is also important to ensure that those who need the most get the best.

The most recently published number of homeless people reminds us that too many are still excluded from our success story. The number of children, families, pensioners and young adults living in state emergency shelters is now 14,486 – and that doesn’t include all the homeless.

A budget that is viewed as unfair cannot expect to be accepted as balanced.

The Cubs defeated the Reds 1-0 in their quickest nine-inning game since 2010

The Cubs defeated the Reds 1-0 in their quickest nine-inning game since 2010

CHICAGO — Jameson Taillon pitched seven clear innings in his second straight win and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on Friday in the opener of their season-ending series.

Taillon (12-8) allowed four hits, struck out two and walked two on a blustery, overcast afternoon at Wrigley Field. The right-hander went 4-0 with a 1.63 ERA in the final six starts of his second year with the Cubs.

“I had a bit of a difficult phase there around the beginning, middle of August,” Taillon said. “To bounce back from that and finish strong is a good feeling.”

Tyson Miller got three outs before Porter Hodge retired the four-hitter for his eighth save.

At 1 hour, 48 minutes, it was the fastest nine-inning game in the majors since Armando Galarraga nearly pitched a perfect game for Detroit against Cleveland on June 2, 2010. This game was completed in 1 hour and 44 minutes.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the fastest nine-inning game for the Cubs since they posted a 3-0 victory over the Reds in 1 hour, 48 minutes at Wrigley on May 24, 2001 .

“It was quick, yes. That was nice,” said Taillon with a smile after his 200th career start. “Throw it to the wind. Good luck.”

Chicago (82-78) secured a winning season, improving to 4-7 against Cincinnati on the year. The Cubs began the season with playoff aspirations under new manager Craig Counsell, but were derailed by injuries and an inconsistent lineup.

Cincinnati (76-84) missed another outstanding performance from Nick Martinez (10-7), who threw a five-hitter in his first complete game of his career. The right-hander posted a 4-1 record with a 0.83 ERA in five starts in September.

“I didn’t have a good feeling about my substitution today,” Martinez said. “So knowing what the wind is doing, playing with the elements and sometimes seeing how far they can hit it, knowing that it will be beneficial for me.”

The Reds lost for the sixth time in eight games. They failed to get a runner to third.

“With the wind blowing so hard, it was a challenge,” Cincinnati interim manager Freddie Benavides said.

The Cubs had their only run in the fifth. Nico Hoerner hit a leadoff double, moved to third on Pete Crow-Armstrong’s sacrifice throw and raced home on Miguel Amaya’s sacrifice fly.

Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson snagged Jake Fraley’s throw from right field and made a long-range tag attempt, but Hoerner slid in safely.

Counsell applauded third base coach Willie Harris’ decision to put Hoerner on the tricky fly ball.

“I think when the ball went up in the air, Willie yelled at Nico, which was really cool: ‘You’re leaving.’ “I don’t care where the ball ends up,” Counsell said.

Cincinnati had multiple baserunners in just one inning. TJ Friedl and Ty France walked with one out in the second, but Fraley and Santiago Espinal flied out.

TRAINING ROOM

Reds: C Tyler Stephenson was checked by a trainer after being hit by a foul ball in the fifth. But he stayed in the game.

Cubs: OF Seiya Suzuki (ankle) missed his second straight game. Counsell said Suzuki hit the cage and ran a bit. “I’m optimistic he can play tomorrow,” Counsell said.

NEXT

Right-handers Rhett Lowder (2-2, 1.40 ERA) and Kyle Hendricks (4-12, 6.28 ERA) take the mound on Saturday. Lowder pitched five scoreless innings in Cincinnati’s 7-1 win over Pittsburgh last weekend. Hendricks, who is eligible for free agency after this season, may be making his final start for Chicago.

Kirksville R-III is designed to replace aging turf and provides future improvements for athletics

The Kirksville R-III School District has begun replacing the turf on its soccer field.

The original turf at Spainhower Field was installed in the summer of 2012.

The planned life expectancy was ten years, but it is currently in its 13th year.

The school board unanimously agreed to begin the planning process for replacing the turf on Wednesday.

It is estimated that replacing the turf will cost approximately $550,000.

Dr. Jeremy Houser, president of the Kirksville School Board, said the new turf is great for the future of the district because it is safer and offers a variety of uses.

“Newer material would be safer,” said Dr. Houser. “With all these artificial turf fields, there is an argument about whether or not they are safer than natural grass, natural grass. But we look beyond that. We want safety, but we also need use in rainy situations for various sports.” Not just football. This is a multi-purpose field for football and activities for young children.

In the future, the school authorities also want to consider modernizing the athletics department.

Jeff Bridges didn’t like his CGI appearance in Tron: Legacy

Jeff Bridges didn’t like his CGI appearance in Tron: Legacy

Jeff Bridges wasn’t the biggest fan of his performance in the 2010s Tron: Legacy.

The Oscar-winning actor recently chatted with Josh Horowitz online Happy, sad, confused Podcast in which the host asked him what he thought about digitally scanning his image for the Joseph Kosinski-directed film.

“This is the new thing…I was scanned and entered into the computer when we did it Tron 2 — What was it called? — legacysaid Bridges. “I didn’t particularly like this self-portrayal. I thought I looked more like Bill Maher than myself.”

The actor reprized the role of video game designer Kevin Flynn Tron: Legacyalmost three decades after the 1982 sci-fi classic Tron. But the sequel, starring Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, also starred a de-aged version of himself as the character Clu (Codified Likeness Utility).

Bridges is also expected to return next year Tron: Areswhich stars Jared Leto, Evan Peters and Greta Lee, but he told Horowitz he would only make a brief appearance. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film follows a sophisticated program, Ares (Leto), who is sent from the digital world to the real world on a dangerous mission.

The old man star also looked back at the original Tronwhich he described as “bizarre” and added: “Things that are so outlandish, that haven’t been done yet, are somehow safer in a way.” Because there is nothing like it. It’s just there.”

Last month, Bridges teased Tron: Areswhich is scheduled to hit theaters on October 10, 2025 on the D23 stage. “Technology and AI are ever-present in our lives,” Bridges said of what fans can expect. “What a perfect time to revisit this world.
