Alabama’s Jalen Milroe wins top honors for the second time in three weeks

The Associated Press college football national player of the week for Week 5 of the season:

Jalen Milroe, Alabama

The Crimson Tide quarterback was the catalyst for a wild 41-34 win over Georgia and is the Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

His late 75-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Williams gave the Tide the lead again after they blew a 28-point lead in the first half.

Milroe completed 27 of 33 carries for a career-high 374 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a season-high 117 yards and two scores. His 491 yards of total offense were the third-most by an FBS quarterback this season.

Milroe’s eight rushing touchdowns are the most in the country this season, and he ranks second with 108 points.

Second

Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty ran for 259 yards and four touchdowns in the Broncos’ 45-24 win over Washington State. Two of Jeanty’s TD runs were longer than 50 yards.

The junior running back passed for more than 250 yards for the second time this season. He leads the nation with 211 yards rushing per game and 13 touchdowns. His 10.3 yards per carry average is the highest in the country among players with at least 30 attempts.

Honorable mention

Hajj-Malik Williams, making his first start for UNLV after Matthew Sluka left the team after three games over a dispute over an NIL payment, was involved in four touchdowns as the Rebels defeated Fresno State 59-14.

The Campbell transfer completed 13 of 16 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 119 yards and another score in his first start in the Football Bowl Subdivision. His performance helped the Rebels improve to 4-0 and crack the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time ever. They are tied for 25th with Texas A&M.

Six statistics

— The best defensive performance of the season belongs to Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku. The defensive end made 14 total tackles, including 10 solo stops, with three sacks, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in the 21-20 win over Western Kentucky.

– Six Nebraska kickers since 2021 have combined to hit 57% of their FGs (30 of 53), the worst rate in the FBS during that span. In the Cornhuskers’ 28-10 win over Purdue, John Hohl missed a field goal and two other attempts were blocked.

– Iowa State’s 20-0 win over Houston was its first away conference shutout since a 24-0 win over Kansas State in 1971.

– According to PackInsider, NC State’s 171 total yards in a 24-17 win over Northern Illinois were the sixth fewest by a winning team that scored 24 points since 2004.

– Southern California RB Woody Marks has caught a pass in 49 straight games, the longest active streak in the FBS.

— Clemson has scored 165 points in its last three games, its most in a three-game span since 2019, when it scored 166 against Wofford, NC State and Wake Forest.

Photos and videos show Helene’s aftermath

Photos and videos show Helene’s aftermath

Photos and videos have captured “biblical devastation” in Asheville, North Carolina, as residents scramble for resources after flooding and power outages that led to gas and water shortages.

Roads were submerged, vehicles and homes were destroyed and residents had to pick up the debris left behind by Helene, which flooded the area with torrential rain late last week after making landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.

“Tropical Storm Helene caused severe damage to the production and distribution system of the City of Asheville’s water system,” the City of Asheville said in a statement Saturday. “Extensive repairs are required to treatment facilities, underground and above-ground water mains, and washed-away roads that prevent water personnel from accessing portions of the system.”

Epic is suing Google again and now Samsung too

Epic is suing Google again and now Samsung too

Four years after Epic sued Google over an illegal app store monopoly – a case the company won last December – Epic is suing again. The Fortnite The game developer has filed a lawsuit second Antitrust lawsuit against Google and now Samsung alleging illegal conspiracy to undermine third-party app stores.

The lawsuit centers on Samsung’s “Auto Blocker” feature, which is now enabled by default on new Samsung phones. While enabled, it automatically prevents users from installing apps unless they come from “authorized sources” – namely the Google and Samsung app stores. Epic claims that there is no process for “authorizing” a competing business.

When Epic filed its original lawsuits against Google and Apple in August 2020, the company did not yet have its own mobile app store. Now the time has come: On August 16, the Epic Games Store launched on Android worldwide and on iPhones in the European Union, where EU digital markets law forced Apple to allow alternative stores.

But a month before the company could open its own store, Epic claims, Samsung suddenly decided to enable auto-blocker more or less by default – making it harder for new phone buyers to install competing apps themselves.

In fact, I can’t install Epic Games Store with Auto Blocker enabled. It works fine when turned off.
Photo by Sean Hollister / The Verge

Epic claims that it now requires “an exceptionally involved 21-step process” to download a third-party app store on a Samsung phone, increasing the likelihood that users will give up somewhere.

While “21 steps” seems like an exaggeration to me (Epic’s own website claims that disabling the auto-blocker only takes four steps!), I can see the company’s point of view when I try it out on my own Samsung phone. Not only is the automatic blocker preventing me from installing the new Epic Games Store, the “Can’t install app” pop-up no longer tells me how to disable the automatic blocker.

When I search for “turn off autoblocker” in the universal search bar on my Samsung phone, no relevant search results appear. When I search for “auto-blocker” I have to tap through several additional screens to turn it off. One of them asks me if I’m really sure and claims, “Auto Blocker protects your phone by blocking threats and other suspicious activity.”

Today, Epic claims that the promise of security is completely false: “Auto Blocker does not assess the security of a specific source or a specific app before blocking an installation,” the legal complaint says.

“This thing is not intended to protect against malware, which would be a perfectly legitimate purpose,” says Epic CEO Tim Sweeney. “The thing is supposed to prevent competition.”

“This thing is not intended to protect against malware.”

However, in a roundtable interview with journalists, Sweeney admits that he has no evidence yet that Google and Samsung worked together – he hopes that this will come to light in the legal disclosure process, as has happened with so many embarrassing things Epic vs Google. He also admits that he didn’t actually ask Samsung if the company would voluntarily make the Epic Games Store an “authorized source.”

As with Sweeney’s previous lawsuits, he claims this is because he is fighting on behalf of all app developers, not just Epic.

“If we had fought Epic vs Apple And Epic vs Google Based on Epic’s special privileges alone, settlement discussions with Apple and Google might have been fruitful,” Sweeney says. “But if we did that, we would sell all the developers.”

Instead, he says, he privately asked Samsung to either change the automatic blocker to be disabled by default or create an “honest whitelisting process” that would automatically allow honest apps through Samsung’s new barrier. When Samsung and Epic could not agree on the “basis” of this whitelisting process, Epic threatened legal action and even passed on a draft of today’s legal complaint to Samsung.

We asked Samsung to confirm or deny whether Auto Blocker actually scans an app for threats or suspicious activity and whether it partners with Google on this feature. We have not received a response yet.

However, I suspect that Samsung will point out that it doesn’t secretly or silently turn on the auto-blocker; It gives users a choice. “The default setting for Auto Blocker is set to On in the phone’s initial setup wizard, but you can also change this setting to Off during the initial setup,” the company’s support page says.

It’s also not yet clear whether Epic was harmed by Auto Blocker. Since Samsung enabled the feature by default, only two new Samsung phones have shipped. While Sweeney claims that Google’s previous attempts to disrupt third-party apps (“Unknown Sources”) have resulted in half of the people who clicked “Download” partially giving up, he admits that he hasn’t heard any yet There is data to prove that the Samsung function works, but things can get worse.

He says the Epic Games Store has now reached 10 million mobile installs, against a “completely achievable” 100 million goal by the end of the year. He characterizes this as “traction, but not huge.”

In Epic vs Google, The company argued that Unknown Sources’ installation process made it so difficult to attract new users to a competing app store that Sweeney was eventually forced to move there Fortnite to Google’s store, even though he promised Samsung he wouldn’t do it. Although the jury wasn’t asked to rule on “Unknown Sources” specifically, it concluded that Epic was harmed overall by Google’s conduct.

Epic is again demanding a jury trial this time.

Speaking of which Epic vs Googlewe expect Judge James Donato to issue his final order there any day, and it’s easy to imagine a world in which Epic vs Samsung will be influenced by how he decides to change Google’s behavior. If he agrees to Epic’s biggest demands, the Google Play Store would be forced to carry the Epic Games Store and other app stores inside and third-party app stores like Epic’s would also gain access to Google Play’s entire app catalog. In this world, Auto Blocker seems a little less relevant.

However, an appeal from Google is guaranteed, and Epic is positioning today’s new lawsuit as a way to stop Google and its partners from pursuing a “malicious compliance strategy” in the meantime. One could even argue that Judge Donato asked for it: in Epic vs GoogleHe repeatedly told Epic’s lawyers that he would not grant their request for an anti-circumvention clause to stop Google from getting creative with workarounds.

“We don’t have any injunctions that don’t involve violations of the law. If you have a problem, you can come back,” he said last November.

Sweeney wouldn’t necessarily commit to suing other companies that put up barriers to third-party app stores, but says Epic is “watching this very closely.”

“Fortunately, no one but Samsung has done this, and we hope it stays that way.”

Nantucket group appeals to Supreme Court to end offshore wind projects and protect endangered whales

Nantucket group appeals to Supreme Court to end offshore wind projects and protect endangered whales

A group of Nantucket, Massachusetts, residents are appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court against the industrialization of parts of the Atlantic Ocean, where they say offshore wind farms – developed with the approval of the federal government – are putting an endangered whale species at risk of sinking .

The group Nantucket Residents Against Turbines argues in its petition to the Supreme Court that “the federal government has lost sight of its legal obligations to protect endangered species that will be directly affected by the construction of thousands of wind turbines in the Atlantic Ocean.”

They argue that the federal agencies that approved leasing the waterfront to wind turbine companies excluded certain dates in their analysis in favor of offshore wind development.

“Despite the agencies’ explicit legal obligation to consider all ‘best available information’ regarding the impacts that their actions may have on an endangered or threatened species and those habitats, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Bureau of Ocean “Energy Management (BOEM) did not consider the cumulative impacts of other planned projects when approving and issuing permits for construction of the Vineyard Wind 1 project.”

MAINE LOBSTERMEN WIN MAJOR COURT VICTORY AGAINST BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S ‘UNUSUAL’ REGULATIONS

The petition to the Supreme Court is the latest wave of opposition to offshore wind development, accelerated at the behest of the Biden-Harris administration, which has set a goal of providing 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030.

Consistent with this goal, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which President Biden signed into law in 2022, provided millions of dollars in tax breaks for green energy production contracts.

Vineyard Wind, a joint venture between foreign companies Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, is the country’s largest offshore wind energy project off the coast of New England – 15 miles from Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The project was one of the IRA’s first beneficiaries.

Vineyard Wind boasted of a “first-of-its-kind tax equity package” of $1.2 billion for commercial-scale offshore wind with three U.S.-based banks, calling it “the largest single asset tax equity financing and the first for “Commercial scale offshore wind energy”. Project.”

“The Vineyard Wind 1 project is the first of the administration’s ‘coordinated steps’ to construct approximately 30 wind turbine projects along the Atlantic Coast that, when completed, will include thousands of turbines covering millions of acres of flooded federal land,” the petition states States.

“Vineyard Wind LLC has constructed or partially constructed 47 of the 62 approved wind turbines, with each turbine spaced one nautical mile apart. When completed, each turbine stands 853 feet above the water and is nearly three times the size of the Statue of Liberty.”

The petition states that 47 turbines so far “have already begun to have negative impacts on the Nantucket community, the marine environment and marine species habitat.”

“Although not taken into account in any environmental impact analysis, problems with the turbines have already begun. In July 2024, a large portion of a 350-foot-long fiberglass and PVC blade broke off one of Vineyard Wind’s turbines and landed in the water, and parts of it fell into the water “The blade washed ashore and littered Nantucket beaches,” it says.

Whale jumps out of the water

The petition argues that around the time of the Vineyard Wind 1 Biological Opinion, BOEM had entered into over 25 offshore wind leases (on which one or more projects are being built). However, in the biological statement, NMFS openly stated that it did not consider the cumulative impacts of these projects.

The North Atlantic right whale, which has been threatened with extinction for more than 100 years, will “bear the brunt of the federal government’s shortcut of the environmental review process,” the petition says.

“Despite the obvious impacts that the construction of wind turbines will have along the migratory route of the North Atlantic right whale and now as a year-round habitat, the authorities only assessed the impacts caused by the project itself, ignoring obvious impacts of all other planned projects Atlantic.” , it says.

The petition argues that the Supreme Court should hear this case to decide whether to split the circuit between the Ninth and First Circuit decisions on this matter, which conflict with each other.

“The petitioners ask this court to review the important issue presented in this petition to clarify the circuit split and to provide guidance to lower courts that will soon face the same question of how to protect endangered species while trying to do so “To achieve goals in the field of renewable energies,” it says.

From the fishing industry’s argument that offshore wind turbines are unfairly hindering their business to the unprecedented whale deaths and the Nantucket blade disaster, criticism has mounted in recent months.

But even as public favor is waning, government officials are still pushing for the industrialization of record areas in the Atlantic Ocean.

Earlier this month, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy announced the largest single offshore wind procurement in the state’s history, pursuing purchase agreements with SouthCoast Wind, New England Wind and Vineyard Wind II.

Rebecca Tepper, secretary of the state Office of Energy and Environment, said the state has said, “Offshore wind is our future, and it is important that we build that future today.”

“By making great progress with projects now, we will lead the nation in the global race for developers, ships, materials and expertise,” she said.

Annie Hawkins, executive director of the Responsible Offshore Development Alliance, explains why wind energy production is undeterred by environmental warnings and concerns and that offshore wind companies and government agencies work hand in hand.

“For a long, long time we have been wagging the dog when it comes to wind developers, energy companies and utilities and investment banks and everyone else that is pushing offshore wind energy from a private sector perspective and from a business perspective “It is an investment with economic interest, that goes far beyond the environmental aspect and considerations around offshore wind energy,” said Hawkins.

“This is no surprise to me because this whole thing has been prepared from the relationships to the staffing of the offshore wind energy companies. There is a real revolving door with federal and state agencies and offshore wind companies. The whole thing was set up.” “A very, very rapid takeover of the oceans. So they’re just going to keep going no matter what,” Hawkins said.

A recent report from the Cato Institute concluded that while the offshore wind industry receives some of the largest tax breaks, its “high costs, which require significant – and increasing – tax and ratepayer subsidies, will increase electricity rates and reduce electricity consumption. “

The report also warned of the economic deficits caused by offshore wind energy.

“It is impossible for a system of green energy tax credits and other subsidies to increase economic growth,” the report concludes. “

“Consumers and taxpayers are being forced to subsidize offshore wind jobs, costing millions of dollars per job.” “Each year – far more than workers are paid – fails to increase overall economic growth and employment,” it says.

Fox News Digital reached out to BOEM and NOAA but did not receive a response by publication time.

Pegula’s big chance; Outsiders want to disrupt the field

Pegula’s big chance; Outsiders want to disrupt the field

No.6 and No.7. Seeds Emma Navarro and Barbora Krejcikova lost their opening matches at the China Open. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, along with Elena Rybakina and Danielle Collins, didn’t even make it to Beijing.

Hey, Jessica Pegula, do you feel an opening?

“Yes,” she said a few days ago. “Because Iga and a lot of top players have dropped out, this is an opportunity for other girls who may not be ranked as high to get the points that they won’t get.

“We’ve seen several times where people came from nothing and did really well.”

Soon after, perhaps because she initiated it, Pegula found herself in a wild tiebreaker with No. 32 Veronika Kudermetova. In the end, Pegula survived 6-7 (9), 6-1, 6-2, but this chaos makes the second week of the China Open, with 16 players remaining, a thrilling experience.

Beijing: scores | Order of play | Pulls

With the WTA Finals in Riyadh just a month away, the fight for qualification is now officially on. There are a number of players in the mix who will take heart from recent history.

Three years ago, Anet Kontaveit was ranked 30th when the game began in Ostrava on September 20th. She won the title there without losing a set, with victories over Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic, Petra Kvitova and Maria Sakkari. Kontaveit reached the quarterfinals in the COVID-delayed Indian Wells and then won back-to-back titles in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca. That put her in 9th place, and when Ashleigh Barty withdrew she was in the field in Guadalajara.

In 2023, Caroline Garcia was ranked No. 48 in mid-July and went on a dizzying summer run: she took the crown in Warsaw, qualified in Cincinnati, won the title and reached the semifinals at the US Open before losing to Ons Jabeur. Garcia became champion in Fort Worth at the end of the year.

So even at this late date, anything is possible. Here are some other things to watch out for in Week 2 of the China Open.

The PIF race to the WTA Finals is… completely open

OK, a quick summary: Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are already there and Krejcikova has a great chance as Wimbledon champion. Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have a good chance of qualifying for Riyadh. Navarro and Collins, currently No. 7 and No. 8, are vulnerable.

Here, in order, are the next five players still alive in the fourth round of the China Open: Zheng Qinwen, Anna Kalinskaya, Paula Badosa, Madison Keys and Mirra Andreeva. With a good run here and/or in Wuhan the following week, either of them could advance into contention.

Three for the show

While Tuesday’s Round of 16 between No. 4 seed Coco Gauff and unseeded Naomi Osaka is the main event, we’re also looking forward to three exciting all-seeded games:

No. 2 Jessica Pegula vs. No. 15 Paula Badosa: It’s the world No. 3 against the former No. 2. Pegula has a 3-0 head-to-head lead, but in the last meeting – the most recent Semifinals in Cincinnati – it was about three sets.

No. 5 Zheng Qinwen vs. No. 34 Amanda Anisimiova: Zheng defeated Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 6-2, while Anisimova won 7-6 (1), 6-4 against No. 9 Daria Kasatkina. Their only previous meeting, in the first round of the 2024 US Open, went to Zheng.

No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No. 18 Madison Keys: Sabalenka won 6-2, 6-2 over Ashlyn Krueger and Keys defeated No. 13 Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-3. Sabalenka has won three of her four games but Keys is in exceptional form.

The Longshots

Zhang Shuai entered the China Open ranked No. 595 in the PIF WTA rankings, riding an incredible 24-match losing streak. She has now won three times in a row and will face No. 23 seed Magdalena Frech for a place in the quarterfinals.

“The big difference for me is the space, the surface, completely different,” Zhang said. “At the China Open, I think of this place like Philippe Chatrier for Rafa. When I’m on this pitch, I have everything. Since I grew up in Tianjin, Beijing, I have been playing this hard court every day for more than 20 years.”

The wildcard from China is the third player, alongside Osaka and Angelique Kerber, to be ranked outside the top 500 this season and to have reached the fourth round of a WTA 1000.

Meanwhile, Yuliia Starodubtseva, a 24-year-old Ukrainian, has been living on the sidelines of her career all season. She managed to qualify for all four Grand Slams in singles.

“To be honest, it feels like you’re entering a new lifestyle,” she said at Roland Garros. “Because you are currently in the last 128 in the world. You’re in the tournament and you’re playing in the same draw with the best players.”

And now the 115th ranked player is in the last 16 at the China Open – her first such result at a WTA 1000 event. She defeated Laura Siegemund, Katerina Siniakova and Elina Avanesyan.

Next up for Zhang: No. 10 Anna Kalinskaya.

Here comes Karolina Muchova (again)

The 28-year-old from the Czech Republic is healthy again – and is terrorizing his opponents. She won five straight matches at the US Open before facing Pegula in the semifinals.

Muchova wasn’t sure whether her newfound confidence would carry the world to Asia, but look at her three games in Beijing. She defeated:

  • Anna Blinkova 6-1, 6-1 in 62 minutes
  • Yuan Yafan 6-3, 6-1
  • Jaqueline Cristian 6-1, 6-3

Her fourth-round opponent, Cristina Bucsa, is ranked 79th. They have never played before.

Another Italian job?

The top seeded team of Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe are the ones to beat in doubles, but watch out for the pesky Italians.

Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, the gold medalists in Paris, are the No. 5 seeds — and the only team in the field to have reached the Olympic podium. The draw offers some opportunities as No. 2 seeds Siniakova and Taylor Townsend (to Lyudmyla Kichenok and Marta Kostyuk) and No. 3 seeds Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk (Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Siegemund) lost.

Red, white and not so blue

Four players from the United States are in the fourth round – 25 percent of survivors: No. 2 Jessica Pegula, No. 4 Coco Gauff, No. 18 Madison Keys and No. 34 Amanda Anisimova.

Four other countries, including China and Poland, have two players in the Sweet 16.

We must “defame” Enoch Powell over the “Rivers of Blood” speech, the Tory conference said

The Liberal Democrats said the four Conservative leadership candidates should “immediately condemn” the comments.

A Liberal Democrat spokesman said the party and leadership candidates should “make clear that support for Enoch Powell has no place in the Conservative Party”.

Powell used a speech at a Conservative Association meeting in Birmingham to criticize the Race Relations Anti-Discrimination Act and warned that migration would lead to violence. He said: “As I look ahead, I am full of forebodings; Like the Roman, I seem to see “the Tiber foaming with much blood.”

He was immediately sacked from the shadow cabinet by Edward Heath, the then Conservative leader, after his speech.

Closing the debate on immigration at the Conservative Party conference, Paul Holmes, the deputy immigration minister, said: “I am pleased to hear your views, the challenges and opportunities that you as our members have set out… and that have given us. ” this morning.

The death toll rises in light of Helene’s relief

The death toll rises in light of Helene’s relief

(This article is being updated. Read our previous coverage here.)

Relief efforts continue in Asheville and western North Carolina, where a major disaster caused by Tropical Storm Helene has devastated communities, left roads impassable and thousands without power. There were only estimates of the extent of the destruction on Sunday evening; the full extent of the Helene devastation will probably only be known for some time.

Check back for live updates arriving throughout Monday.

5 additional deaths were reported in Buncombe County

Five others died as a result of Tropical Storm Helene’s historic flooding of Buncombe County communities, Sheriff Quintin Miller said during a 10 a.m. briefing Monday. The district has now reported 35 deaths in connection with Helene.

In western North Carolina, at least 41 deaths were attributed to the storm between Buncombe, Henderson and Macon counties.
